North Korea and South Korea

• What is the economy of North Korea like? What is people’s average income in North Korea?

• What is the population of North Korea? • What is the political system in North Korea? The official name for North Korea is:

“The Democratic People's Republic of Korea”. But do you think it is really democratic? Or, is it the opposite of a democracy?

• Why are those people on the left carrying that hay? Why is that many in the upper-right corner picture holding that small booklet?

• What about the soldier in the middle who is holding the bombs?

Page 2: North Korea and South Korea What is the economy of North Korea like? What is people’s average income in North Korea? What is the population of North Korea?

• The average income in North Korea is $506 US per year (or $1,800 per year based on Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), because things are generally cheaper in N. Korea.)

• The population of North Korea is 25,000,000.• The political system in North Korea is a communist dictatorship. They can not vote for all

of their leaders.• The people are carrying hay because they do not have better jobs and the economy is

controlled based on socialist principles, that is to say: the government controls and plans the economy. This is the way China’s economy was before Deng Xiao Ping came back to power in 1979.

• What do you think of the poster of he soldier in the middle? Who is the “enemy” in that poster? Can you tell? ( here, “to tell” means to “understand something or see something when the situation might be a little unclear”.

• The man holding the booklet is Kim Jong-Un: Korea’s top leader. • Let’s talk with our classmates about what he have heard regarding Korea….What do you

know about North Korea? What have you heard, read?

Page 3: North Korea and South Korea What is the economy of North Korea like? What is people’s average income in North Korea? What is the population of North Korea?

• What do you think the population of South Korea is?• How about South Korea’s population?• What do you think the average income in South Korea is?• What is South Korea’s political system?• Why is a “voting booth” essential to democracy? • Do you think that South Korean currency is beautiful? •

Page 4: North Korea and South Korea What is the economy of North Korea like? What is people’s average income in North Korea? What is the population of North Korea?

• The population of South Korea is 50,000,000• The average income in South Korea is $28,000 US (if it is adjusted on the basis if

Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), then it is $35,000 US)• South Korea is a democracy.• Voting is essential to democracy; in fact it is really it’s main definition. Anybody who

calls their country a democracy but does not allow voting for ALL political leaders is not a democracy.

• I think Hong Kong’s currency is more beautiful than South Korea’s currency; but that is just my opinion.

Let’s ask our classmates: Have you been to South Korea? Would you like to visit South Korea? Why yes? Why no? Do you know anybody who has been to South Korea? What did they think of it?

In the top picture we can see bags of leaflets attached to balloons.

In the bottom picture we can see people reaching up to grab the leaflets attached to those the purple balloons.

Let’s ask our classmates and try to guess: Why is this happening? Who is sending the leaflets? Who is receiving the leaflets? What do you think is on those leaflets? (hint: people often pass out leaflets for political purposes)

(first… what does that red and black logo with the two letters in it stand for? It is a news agency: www.ap.org.

Another highly-trusted and reliable news agency is Reuters. www.Reuters.com )

Most Western journalists believe that these agencies are reliable and honest.

South Koreans are using balloons to carry political leaflets over the border into North Korea.

Should they do this? Are these two separate countries? If they are, should one country be allowed to do that to another country?

What do you think? What is your opinion?

Who do you support? And Why?

Do you like Korean products? Which ones do you like? Why?

Do you think Hyundais are good cars? In America, I remember when they first were introduced into the market: cheap, cheap, cheap. That was their reputation. However, now they have increased quality and have gained respect as more than just a “cheap toy” car.

The South Koreans designed the train above. It can go 220 miles per hour (mph). Do you find that amazing? When will China make a train like that? Does China make high-speed rail trains? Do they make them for other countries?

The automobile (automobile just means a car!) market in China is growing very quickly. It is getting huge actually. What is the future of China’s car market? What other industries are growing as a result of China’s growing demand for automobiles?

What was the Korean war? When did it begin? When did it end? Who was involved, and why did they fight?

What is a civilian, what is a soldier?

How many people died in the Korean war? How many civilians do you think died? How many soldiers?

Page 9: North Korea and South Korea What is the economy of North Korea like? What is people’s average income in North Korea? What is the population of North Korea?

The Korean war started in 1950 and ended in 1953. It was fought because the US and it’s allies did not want the south to become Communist.

The US and other UN armies usually kept exact casualty records, but numbers for other participants are often only estimates. The following is in round numbers:On the Allied side military deaths totaled approximately 178,000.South Korean: 138,000US: 36,500other allies: 3500

In addition, over 990,000 South Korean civilians were killed.North Korea has never released official casualty figures; The US Army estimates:Military 215,000Civilian 1,550,000The Peoples Republic of China officially says that about 183,000 Chinese soldiers died, but the US estimates the number at more than twice that: about 400,000.

How could somebody from such a small country create something so important?

• Linus Torvalds was born in Helsinki, Finland. He created the Linux operating system. The Android operating system is based on linux. He created it for free and let other people use it for free. The linux operating system was designed for desktop computers, and many computer programmers and others use it for their desktop (that is, they do NOT use Microsoft windows on their computer). When did he become a citizen of America?

• What percentage of smart phones in the world use the Android operating system? Can you guess, ask your partners. Also, what percentage of the Chinese smart phone market does Android control? (Who “owns” Android?)
