At NKB we strive to make the most innovative, durable and user-friendly products on the market. It’s often the smallest details that make a difference and for 2010 we took a close look at all exi-sting production details and began to improve them one by one. The result of our extensive construction overhaul is what we call PROGRESSION 10: A very detailed catalogue of product features that are simple yet highly effective for quality and performance. By simplifying the production process and standardizing single parts of products throughout our range, the construction process and the number of parts needed has been greatly optimized. For the first time ever computer supported sewing machines have been implemented, guaranteeing a perfect stitch that is durable and of the highest quality. Cloth cutting processes have also been op-timized, allowing us to use more expensive and higher quality ma-terials that are lighter and more durable. Even the seam construc-tion diagram has been changed from the classic zigzag stitch to a stronger triple zigzag. All top are now stitched and glued. The list of improvements is long and peppered with completely new innovations like the Fusion 10 and the new pigtails. Before any product can leave the factory, it must pass all quality inspections and check points. Every production process is defined in the smallest detail and accurately logged, allowing us to achie-ve the highest level of quality control for every single product. With the sum of innovations, new materials, construction changes and quality control procedures, the standard of our products has risen to an entirely new level.

fusion 10:
The fusion 10 is a completely new connection between the strut and leading edge. In contrast to normal connections, the forces are no longer supported by a webbing strap but by a flexible line. The line ensures a perfectly clean connection of strut to leading edge even with the smallest struts and offers our strongest strut connection ever. Just a little revolution in strut technology!
coMputer supported sewing:
At North Kiteboarding we strive to perfect the smallest manuf-acturing details. With the aid of computer-supported sewing machines, we are guaranteed the strongest possible seam construction and a clean, good-looking stitch. Our extremely du-rable double V pigtails are also constructed using this innovation for maximum quality.
doubled and cleaned pigtails:
New ways in constructing Front – and Back Pigtails have been found by NKB. No more belt struts are used, but strongest dynee-ma lines. The advantage of the lines is the flexibility at the edge of the canopy, so they can flex in every single direction, not like stiff belt struts. Further more two layers of strongest Dacron are sewed on all Pigtails which ensures a perfect and flutter free load transmission.

caM battens
Our revolutionary and patent-pending Cam Battens are made of flexible nylon and improve the stability of the canopy and re-duce the drag of the kite. The Cam Battens allow us to achieve a deeper profile and make the kites more powerful. The deeper canopy combined with a round entry profile gives better stall resistance, which yields not only better low end power but also better hang-time. Cam Battens also give the kite much better upwind abilities and very good stability in the sky.
kook-proof connectors
These connectors prevent the number one cause of kite acci-dents by ensuring that front lines cannot be attached to the back of the kite and back lines cannot be attached to the front.
self rescue handles
These loops attached to the inside of the wingtips make it easier to hold the kite for bodydrag rescue.
araMid reinforced
New for 2010 are the Aramid Reinforcements, added in highly ex-posed areas such as the Micro Batten pockets and the leading edge scuff pads. These reinforcements reduce wear from every-day use and increase the durability and life of your kite.
relaunch bungees
The 2010 Rebel and Evo both utilize the same new re-launch bungee system. A small ring supports an elastic bungee atta-ched to the front leg of the back line “V”. When the lines are not under flying tension, the V is pulled tight to the leading edge preventing any line snags on the kite’s wingtips during launching, landing and water re-launch. The clean, low profile design requires no assembly when attaching your lines to the kite and is reinforced with a durable PVC patch to prevent any wear on the leading edge.
anti snag concept
The combination of Re-launch Bungees and our new low profile batten pockets and thin strut ends helps prevent any lines from snagging anywhere on the kite during relaunch.

canopy
In order to produce a lightweight and durable kite, North uses Technoforce T9 polyester ripstop for the canopy. This material does not absorb any water and is coated with UV-protection on both sides.
bladders
Our UV-obstructing polyester polyurethane bladders proved to be very reliable and are now also equipped with return valves at the small transversal tubes.
load distribution panels
More powerful kite profiles means that the canopy has to carry higher loads resulting in a distorted profile and loss of efficiency. The Load Distribution Panels spread the load from the lines to a wider area keeping the profile smooth and distinct and allowing the kite to perform with maximum efficiency at all times.
dacron leading edge and ribs
All areas exposed to peak stresses are made of top-quality 170g or 175g Dacron. This material helps achieve maximum tear strength in combination with conventional kite materials and will never delaminate.

rebel 2010
From flat-water freedom to tearing the bag out of any size surf, the 2010 Rebel is the all-terrain freeride / wave kite of your dreams. Smooth, lively and responsive steering, even when de-powered, makes it the ideal kite for surfing and a blast to ride in any conditions. The loaded 5th line design, in addition to providing safety, gives the Rebel its short and aggressive power stroke that is up to 30% shorter than bridled kites. This means huge range and top-end comfort on those super windy days and the ability to instantly turn the power off and on at will as you link your turns down the line. Our new “floating” center strut further enhances the direct de-power by allowing the canopy to easily luff as well as provi-ding rock-solid stability in strong winds. The new back-line “V” attachment distributes the load of the back-lines on the kite for a solid bar feel and, together with the new bungee system, eliminates any line snags during re-launch. The Rebel’s unique steering sensitivity and smoothness have also been improved by implementing a straight segment in the leading edge for an ultra clean, flutter-free canopy near the tips that keeps you connected and in-tune to the kite’s every movement. So stop dreaming and go ride.

rebel 2009 vs. rebel 2010
Floating Strut
ken winner / rebel 2009 vs. rebel 2010
Over the last year, we have received many compliments from satisfied customers about the performance of the
’09 Rebel. Smoother, aerodynamically cleaner, more po-werful, better depower, quicker turning, etc. Inevitably, however, our customers found the ways in which the ’09 Rebel could be improved. Riders who fre-quently rode overpowered on the small sizes felt those kites could be less crisp and aggressive in feel, while an assortment of other riders – heavyweights, schools, less expert riders and riders who don’t pump up their kites very hard – felt the ’09 Rebels were too prone to leading edge instability.
The wish – making small kites easier and more comfor-table to ride – is a perennial one, as small kites are in-herently quick-turning, fast through the wind window, and prone to generating big power spikes. We have worked to make them otherwise and with considerable success, but it’s an ongoing challenge. It is a challenge complicated by the fact that some riders like a kite with a quicker, more aggressive feel, while others prefer a softer, tamer feel.
The second problem – leading edge instability – was a surprise. In our testing we use big, aggressive riders like Sky Solbach, for example, who weighs over 90 kilos and can easily jump 15 meters into the air while riding an 8 meter Rebel in 35 knots of wind. Even with Sky putting kites under such a load, the only time we had seen lea-ding edge instability in our testing was when we under-inflated our test kites. Still, if customers have a problem, it’s our job to fix it.
Our design plan for the 2010 Rebel called for incremen-tally improving on the ’09 Rebel’s strong points, while increasing leading edge stability – even when under-inflated – and softening the feel of the small sizes. We felt we could make these improvements by (1) going to a modified five-strut configuration, (2) tweaking overall geometry, and (3) refining profiles in some sizes, and (4) adjusting our line attachments.
In addition, while Rebel materials and construction have been widely praised by customers, we have implemen-ted improvements in construction that should yield gre-ater consistency and durability in all North kites in 2010.
strut configuration
One of the reasons we liked the four-strut configurati-on of the ’09 Rebel was that eliminating the center strut permitted the broad center section of the Rebel to luff completely when the kite was depowered. This gave better power and depower – more of a “pop”, more of a crisp and quick on-off in the canopy power – when pulling in on the bar or letting out. At the same time, this more complete ability to luff in the center of the canopy gave all sizes a smoother, less draggy feel.
We were determined to keep both the good depower and crisp feeling in the 2010 Rebel, but thought that staying with a four-strut design, while fine for most riders, was too close to the edge for some. The answer was to move the quarter struts slightly farther from the center
– thus enlarging the luffable center area of the canopy – and to place a straight strut in the center position.
We had dabbled with straight struts back in the summer of 2001, and we have prototyped with them occasio-nally over the years, but have never before found the right circumstances for gaining a clear advantage from them. However, with the new 2010 Rebel prototypes we could see that the tip and quarter struts were providing good profile stability while the straight center strut was adding enormous stability to the leading edge tube wi-thout robbing us of the large luffable area.
Combining the wider luffable center area of the cano-py with the extra leading edge support from the fifth strut gave us, in short, the best of both four- and five-strut worlds.
overall geoMetry
The change in geometry that is shared by all 2010 Re-bels is the reduction from three segements to just one segment in the span between tip and quarter struts. This is an idea we have tested and revisited over the years, but only now have hit upon the right way to do it.
From our testing, and from observing some other kites on the water, we knew that having too few segments through the center part of the kite – the part that has the most curve in the arc – has undesirable effects on cano-py profile shape. Therefore, we knew we didn’t want to use single-segment geometry through the middle of the kite. However, nearer the tips, where the arc of the kite is normally not so curved and where flat canopy pro-files are desirable because of their resistance to flutte-ring and flapping, the single-segment approach makes sense.
The result of this use of single-segment geometry gives canopy tips that are cleaner, less draggy and nearly flutter-free.
The other change in overall geometry can be found in sizes 9 to 12. In those sizes we carried over the geometry found in Rebel sizes 14 and 16. The result is a crisper feel, better depower and greater resistance to overflying and nose-diving in those sizes.
profile
We experimented with different profiles in sizes 7, 10 and 14, however it was only in the 7 that we found impro-vements. Since we were looking for softer, less aggres-sive-feeling small kites, we reasoned that flatter profiles, which “pop” less when sheeted in, might be the way to go. This is exactly how it turned out. A 7 per cent reduc-tion in profile depth at the center of the canopy gave a softer feel, and a further reduction of about 8 per cent gave an even softer feel. Interestingly, this overall 15 per cent reduction in profile depth did not result in less low-end power.
line attachMents
Most obvious is the change to a “V” attachment for the back pigtail. This has two benefits: (1) it permits a bet-ter, cleaner relaunch bungee design, and (2) it gives a
more solid bar feel when the bar is pulled in for maxi-mum power.
One side benefit of the new relaunch bungee design is that the back pigtail “V” and back flying lines are less likely to snag on the tip of the leading edge.
The other line change is in nose line attachment. Testing showed that the new Rebel with its extra rib and conse-quent greater structural stability needed less structure from the nose line. This was evident from the fact that smoothness and responsiveness to turning inputs impro-ved with nose line attachments closer to center.
construction
In 2009 we implemented several construction changes in our school kites – the kites that get the hardest, most unremitting beating of any.
One example of these, admittedly subtle, construction changes is the Fusion 10 strut-LE joint. Without going into too much detail, we can simply say that this method of attaching strut to the leading edge is more precise, re-peatable and robust than any we have used in the past. Now that this joint has a year of hard use by schools and riders, we feel confident putting it on all our 1010 models, starting with the Rebel.
Another change can be found in the chord wise (front to back) seams of the canopy. Where these in the past have been more of a “butt” type of seam they are now the stronger and smoother overlap seam. The impro-vement can quickly be seen in a canopy that is more wrinkle-free than in the past.
bottoM line
Key improvements for 2010 are:- All sizes have greater structural stability and a more
solid feel- All sizes have lower drag, less flutter and better
depower- All sizes have stronger, more repeatable construction- Large sizes are crisper in feel- Middle sizes crisper in feel and more stable in the air- Small sizes are softer and more forgiving

The 2010 Vegas is a classic C-shape with a pure C feel and mas-sive pop for radical new-school freestyle. Building on the best points of the ’08 and ’09, the ‘10 Vegas has the classic feel you’ve come to expect from one of the world’s most popular freestyle kites with added benefits. Designed specifically for freestyle riding, no compromises were made towards developing a kite with the performance potential necessary for tackling today’s most technical new-school tricks. Further development of the 5th element system, allowed us to develop a true C kite with great stability and rock-solid power, combined with maximum safety and de-power abilities. Redu-ced canopy segments and special construction translates into smooth, intuitive and playful turning characteristics that are ea-sily recognized in kite loops where the kite climbs back up over-head for controlled landings. Our most homogenous Vegas line ever. All sizes offer an incredibly similar feeling in both turning speed and bar load, requiring nearly no adjustment time when switching kite sizes. Two trim options allow you to set up your Vegas in either “Clas-sic” or “New-school” modes. Classic freestyle mode provides high de-power and gives you the most versatile range for do-ing big jumps, un-hooked freestyle and even venturing into the surf. New-school mode gives you less de-power, extreme stability while unhooking and less sensitive bar reaction for doing loaded power moves. Simply put, the Vegas is the ultimate freestyle kite with explosive pop to elevate your riding to new levels and to refine your style. Vegas, we play the music!

front- / backline power distribution
When riding with full power in the Freestyle mode, the forces on the lines are split into 60 % on the front lines and 40 % on the back lines. The-refore, less steering impulse is nee-ded to make the kite turn quickly. When riding with full power in the New School mode, the forces on the lines are split into 75 % on the front lines and 25 % on the back lines. This makes the back lines less sensi-tive, causing less movement while you are throwing an unhooked trick. More steering impulse is required to get the same turning as that of a Ve-gas in Freestyle mode.
two different set ups
Two different positions to connect the front lines: One for the FREEstyle high depower SET UP and one for the NEW SCHOOL SET UP.
depower behaviour
With the New School set up the Ve-gas still retains some Depower but becomes less sensitive to bar shee-ting and steering making it ideal for unhooking.
tip turning area
In Freestyle mode the tip has a wider surface affected by the rider’s bar in-put. Therefore, the kite is much more sensitive and reactive in steering. In New School mode, a smaller surface of the tip is affected. More bar input is required for quick steering reaction. More bar stability means the kite will not “rise up” when you unhook ma-king it easier to throw mind-blowing New School tricks.

vegas 2009 vs. vegas 2010ralf grösel / vegas 2009 vs. vegas 2010
NKB: From the very beginning the Vegas was a bench-mark in C kites and is one of the most successful models worldwide. First time ever, the Vegas 2010 is now develo-ped by the designer Ralf Grösel. How come Ralf?
Ralf GRösel: North Kiteboarding is offering the widest range on the market. From beginner to high perfor-mance kites every niche is covered. Ken Winner and me share the development of the five lines. The concept of the Vegas is more similar to the Evo, so it was just a con-sequent decision to be responsible of these two lines.
NKB: Which personal connection do you have to the Vegas? Was it hard to continue this glamorous project?
Ralf GRösel: Yeah, of course! “Vegas” for me, is the epitome of the perfect Freestyle/Newschool Kite which I always rode with enormous fun. From the beginning I knew there is a huge community of Vegas Fans which expects a lot from the new Vegas 2010. Therefore I was really looking forward to this challenge and started wor-king enthusiastically.
NKB: Which things have been changed at the con-cept?
Ralf GRösel: Due to my experience of the EVOs, I wanted to try some new ideas at the Vegas. Classic C-kites normally have wider profiles than e.g. Delta Shapes. My first goal was to find a suitable profile that generates loads of pop but also with very homogenous and well tempered flying characteristics.C kites differ a lot from all other kite shapes offering a bridle system, which makes the choice of profile even more important. But basically the Vegas 2010 is a con-sequent development of the classic C-kite idea with 5th Element and not a completely new concept.
NKB: The Vegas 2010 looks more like the 2008 model than the 2009, why that?
Ralf GRösel: That’s right, the 2010 model again has lots of characteristics of a real C-kite, not like a U-kite. This is mainly an advantage of the development pro-cess of testing the 2008, 2009 and lots of proto kites. This made pretty clear that a combination of both concepts is the happy medium.
NKB: What’s the difference to former models?
Ralf GRösel: The optical differences are the number of sail segments, the C-shape and the form at the tips. Lots of positive influence was achieved by reducing the sail segments. A result is a lighter and more agile kite. Less weight has to be accelerated which can be easily recognized at kiteloops, feeling the kite rising to the ze-nith way faster than his ancestors. It’s an impressive way combining the best characteristics of the last years mo-dels. Stiffness of form and compactness have been con-nected to easy handling. As a result, the performance can be used playful and intuitive. Still the Vegas stays a kite for the most motivated contest rider.
NKB: For which target audience do you think the Vegas is best?
Ralf GRösel: The target group is clearly defined by Freestyle and dedicated New School, like the years be-fore. The Vegas always was and stays the first choice for our teamriders and has been developed together with them. Further the complete line is more homoge-nous than ever. Meaning every single size is very similar in feel like all the others. Even changing from 14 to 7, you’ll immediately feel comfortable and recognize the typical Vegas soul. This fact is a very positive effect for every rider but especially the contest rider, being able to change between sizes without needing time to feel good at the kite.
NKB: Will this Vegas also have a trim option?
Ralf GRösel: Yes, but with the difference of two, not three set ups. Following modes are offered:
- 5th Element Freestyle High Depower: Lots of depower with the classic Vegas feel. This option offers a huge variety and is best for waves, jumping and unhooked manoeuvres.
- 5th Element Freestyle / Newschool: Dedicated to Newschool, it offers less Depower, ex-treme stability at unhooked manoeuvres and not reac-ting hectic at steering mistakes. Still offering all safety and relaunch advantages of the 5th Element.

get started
After just three years of experience in schools, the BUZZ 2010 al-ready became a benchmark in school kites. Being that good, it was a small step to inspire kids and beginners with that easy to use concept. The Buzz meets all the requirements of beginners. Briskly pulling the bar does not immediately result in a jump over the dunes. When the kite lands on the water or on the ground, relaunch requires no active intervention from the rider. Instead, its auto-relaunch makes it crawl to the edge of the wind window where it waits for a launching impulse from the pilot. Large Dacron sur-faces, Kevlar reinforcements and a new strut construction pro-tect the kite in the rough environment of kite schools. The Buzz has a very wide wind range and is able to water re-launch at only a few Beaufort. The simple four-line bar also con-tributes to making the introduction to kiteboarding safe and easy as never before! Thousands of Kiters will approve that.

The “5th Element-like Pressureless Safety System” continues to be the most important feature of the Solid. In addition to the regular landing and relaunch option, this system offers perfect safety functions: releasing the 5th Element safety line pulls down the kite’s central profile, causing the rest of the kite to collapse backwards. The wind meets no resistance and the depowered kite sinks to the ground. Together with improved profile and bridle geometries we opti-mized the flying properties of the various sizes. The smaller sizes now have more harmonious flying characteristics and permit an absolutely stress free kiting experience, particularly for newco-mers and intermediate riders. The Vario Trim option allows the rider to adjust the kite to personal preferences. The Solid is a true fun kite. With its easy and forgiving flying characteristics, together with a wide wind range and the safety of the 5th Element, the Solid 09 combines reliability, easy handling and performance.

dynaMic powerDynamic Power is a term used to describe the way in which a kite generates power. The small Vegas sizes for example can generate lots of power when flown ag-gressively up and down, where as the big Rebel sizes allow you to simply sheet & go.
sheet and go power““Sheet & Go” is the ability to simply pull the bar towards you (sheet-in) to go and to push the bar away from you (sheet- out) to stop. Since the kite has such a great po-wer/de-power range, minimal steering is required to ge-nerate power from the kite.
loaded 5th lineThe Rebel is a loaded 5th Line kite meaning that it flies with constant tension on the 5th line. This makes the Re-bel incredibly direct when sheeting in and out and gi-ves it a consistently solid and steady bar feel.

again one step ahead
Still one step ahead, the fifth edition of our tried and tested 5th Element Bar is possibly the most effective and trustworthy safety system on the market. The Iron Heart III requires minimal release forces and is not affected by harsh sand and saltwater conditions. The double de-power line in combination with the Sliding Stopper and Stopper Ball ensures that the bar is always where you want it to be in all situations. Our small, lightweight Vario Cleat allows you to quickly and easily adjust it to your desired de-power stroke while the sy-stem automatically trims your lines to the perfect length. If the dangling trim line has ever interfered with your flow in the past, you can now forget about it focus on your riding: Simply Velcro the dangling portion to the stopper ball so it’s never in your way. The Micro Loop is no longer an integrated feature, but for those who like the comfort of riding with fixed power, the system can quickly and easily be fitted. Riders of all skill levels, from newcomers to pros, will be-nefit from the simplicity and functionality of the new 5th Element Bar Trust Bar and Iron Heart III.

iron heart iiithe benchMark for safety
Four years after its introduction to the market, the Iron Heart III, again redefines the benchmark for safety. The light but solid stain-less steel and plastic material combination is one of the most reli-able safety systems on the market. The release forces are very low by less than 4 kg at a load of 200 kg in a dry and sand free envi-ronment. Excellent function is ensured even in wet and sandy con-ditions with fewer than 7 kg release force at 200 kg. The centrally located Iron Heart III release grip is large and ergonomic for a fast and good function. It is very easy to find and can be operated either with the right or left hand. The futuristic design prevents the system from jamming and greatly facilitates reassembling.

Standard Safety Mode
Suicide Mode French Norm
french norM 2010
For the 2010 bars, we insisted on applying the French norm, just like every year. This means that a public institution must test various requirements to two systems of the bar under preset conditions:
- The quick release system of the bar (Iron Heart) and- The quick release that separates the rider completely from the kite (safety leash)
Both safety systems are tested in various media, the release force must not exceed 100N (9.8Kg). The actual release process of both systems must not exceed 0.5sec. The transition from riding position to release (reaching for the Iron Heart or safety leash from riding position with both hands on the bar) must not exceed 2sec.
Other requirements:The grips of the release system must be red and the direction of re-lease must be indicated. The release grips must be easy to reach. Furthermore, the Iron Heart must resist a load of 300kg without de-formation and without losing functionality. The same applies to the safety leash with a load of 150kg.The system is tested in the worst sandy and salty conditions.
Still lots of actual systems on the market are not able to reach this norm!
the newest artful functions are:
the roto head 2010:After spins, the Roto Head offers you a simple and free backrota-tion of the lines. This ensures to have a constant safety function in all situations. This invention again makes kiting a little bit more comfortable and safe.
auto positioning iron heart iii :Due to its ergonomic design, the Iron Heart III can be easily hoo-ked in after unhooked tricks.Low friction and a high quality metal hole complete the perfect picture.
flip flop chicken dick:The Flip Flop Chicken Dick is moveable into two positions with a digital on/off modus.
safety function:Delivered with every bar, you have the choice between the stan-dard safety mode and an easy adjustable suicide mode. Attenti-on, just the freeride modus delivers the 100% safety solution! Only experienced riders with special needs should use this option. We recommend to always use the standard safety mode. Riders using the suicide mode must be aware of the consequences and are responsible for occurring damages!
super easy reasseMbling:The easy mechanism, makes it foolproof easy to reassemble the system one handed.
light weight construction:The light weight construction is built out of finest selected, durable materials. This special mix of high performance materials fulfils the world’s highest quality standards.

iron heart iii
The in 2010 completely new developed NKB Iron Heart III is the new benchmark in safety release systems. The design reduces release forces to less than 7 kg at a load of 200 kg, which makes the system easy to operate and reliable in any emergency situation. The NKB Iron Heart of course fulfils the demands of the French Norm. The light design also facilitates fast and easy reassembling. New features 2010:
- Roto Head- two safety modes (standard and suicide mode) - auto positioning- Flip Flop chicken dick
Metal center part
The new developed shape of the metal center hole reduces the friction on the lines and realizes easy sheeting and less abrasion.Due to the new shape of the center part, it is ensured that the grip can not be damaged by the iron heart or the stopper ball. At unhooked riding, the metal center part is responsible for the repositioning of the Iron Heart III.
safety leash
The new North Safety Leash 2010 is perfect for any type of kite and rider. This leash offers lowest release forces in any conditions. In emergency situations, the leash can be released through a safety mechanism. The whole system meets the demands of the French Norm. The 2010 leash is delivered with a new developed carabiner, hol-ding loads up to 250kg. Just that quality makes the carabiner the ideal solution for the suicide mode of the iron heart. A neoprene sleeve with plastic slider avoids accidental hookings.
sticky bar grip
The new allover embossed grip, is exclusively developed for North Kiteboarding to ensure a firm hold and perfect riding comfort. The allover embossing gives you a softer feel of the EVA, but is still very durable. The solution is an even stickier grip, in all situations.
free sliding stopper and stopper ball
The Sliding Stopper and the Stopper Ball permit you to adjust the depower lines on the water. Particularly in light wind conditions you will be more comfortable if you do not have to constantly hold the weight of the bar. It has two different settings for more and for less traction. To change the settings, all you need to do, is to take the ball of the depower lines, turn around the ball and reassemble it. The Sliding Stopper Ball also reduces wear on the depower lines. Caution: since this system is able to reduce the kites maximum depower, it should only be used on the water and at a safe di-stance from dangerous objects. The Free Sliding Stopper is easy to operate with one hand.
Micro hook / Micro loop (upgrade kit)
To activate this bar feature, you need the Micro Loop upgrade kit. The Micro Hook system allows a way of riding, with the North bar permanently hooked in. This setup transfers a larger percentage of the load to the harness and reduces arm fatigue. To connect or disconnect, pull the bar towards you and twist it. The Fix Loop is placed at an angle that makes accidental hooking impossible. The construction with Dyneema line inside the loop is more resi-stant and durable. In case of emergency simply pull the quick re-lease mechanism at the iron heart and the kite will depower.
vario cleat
North’s Vario Cleat offers an easy and precise way to control the kite’s power. The adjuster can be positioned anywhere on the de-power line and allows you to customize the bar to your size and liking. The trim loop is attached to the counter piece at the stop-per ball with a Velcro and doesn’t wrap around the center line during kiting.
soft winder
The soft winder with protective rubber coating at the bar ends, reduces the risk of injuries and protects the lines. The separate rub-ber bungee prevents accidental unwinding.
webbing adJuster (only snowkitebar)
The Webbing Adjuster makes it easy to individually adjust the kite’s power. For minimum effort the adjuster is always pulled downwards, both for increasing and decreasing power. Pulling the lower loop reduces the kite’s power, while pulling the upper red ring conveni-ently increases power step by step. Available as spare part.

flying lines 5th eleMent
Monofil
2009
2010
The flying lines developed in cooperation with FSE Robline were a complete novelty when they were first introduced on the kite market. After four years of experience and through testing by the most demanding kiters, North Kiteboarding schools and teamri-ders know, that they can always rely on these lines. Now the next evolution in kitelines has arrived. The FL-10. Long life lines, extreme-ly robust and with highest durability.
Conventional lines get their stiffness from a coating that is dama-ged by repeated folding. If a line is folded, the coating (wax) is extruded and the line will always fold in the same spot. To prevent this, we weave a Monofill into our lines, that restores the original shape (Memory Effect) and ensures that the next time the line bends in a different spot.
If the line is only gently bent, it returns faster to its original shape and it becomes a little stiffer. This technology makes laying out the lines more comfortable and quicker. The increased breaking strength of 270 daN (approximately 270kg) is an added bonus. To ensure that the lines are attached correctly we use Monofill in dif-ferent colors. The connection points are different to prevent wrong attaching.Lots of work for just a line – but these lines are your life insurance.
- Memory Effect- More Bending Stiffness- Highest Breaking Strength
safety
Whether you ride unhooked, spin, try a water relaunch for the first time or practice a handle pass, all maneuvers, including the latest tricks, can now be performed with the safety leash of the 5th Element. As soon as you pull the Iron Heart or let go of the bar it slides up the safety line. The kite is then completely de-powered and comes down without twisting the lines.
relaunch
The 5th Element allows you to re-launch the Vegas without having to swim towards the kite. From the nose down position, simply pull the 5th line towards you to get the kite to tip onto it‘s back while simultaneously pulling one back line. The kite will make it‘s way to the edge of the window and take off. The 5th Element also allows you to relaunch the Rhino and Rebel in light winds.
perforMance
The 5th Element stabilizes the kite’s arc and thus clearly increases per-formance. Enhanced profile stiffness brings considerable advantages in depowered situations and increases the kite’s wind range. As a result, the kite flies closer to the edge of the wind window and responds more directly to steering impulses.
reinforced attacheMent points
The kite has reinforced attachment points at the leading edge and the 5th Element Bar is either attached to a single line or to a Y-shaped nose-line with a predetermined length. This system allows you to use different kite sizes with the same bar without making further adjustments.
triple v-connection
Triple V-Connection: about 13 meters below the kite, the Triple V-Connec-tion converts an almost conventional four liner bar into the 5th Element Bar. The new Triple V construction has increased durability and less wear. The new stronger Dyneema lines are fed through a metal ring that reduces friction and wear. The power frontline splits into two frontlines that run to the kite’s right and left tips.
internal line systeM
The 5th Element system has three lines coming through the newly designed bar hole. Two of them are the depower lines that end at the Vario Cleat, the depower system, and continue from there as the power frontline. The third line is our safety frontline to which you attach your safety leash. When you release the safety mechanism, the bar slips up along this line and com-pletely depowers the kite.
5th eleMent
In its fifth year, North Kiteboarding’s 5th Element has been thoroughly redesigned for even more effective safety release functions. The re-worked IronHeart and Safety Leash require lower release forces and are now more functional even in sandy and wet saltwater conditions. The new Sliding Stopper and Stopperball with the double depower line ensure a perfect hold of the bar in all situa-tions. The smaller and lighter Vari-oCleat helps you to adjust the bar fast and easy for a perfect fit. Riders of all levels, from pros to newcomers, will benefit from the advantages of the new 2010 5th Element bar setup.
loaded 5th line
The Rebel is a loaded 5th Line kite meaning that it flies with constant tension on the 5th line. This makes the Rebel incredibly direct when shee-ting in and out and gives it a consi-stently solid and steady bar feel.

3d wood carbon cap sandwich
2010 is a big leap forward in board technology as North Kiteboarding introduces the 3D Wood Carbon Cap Sandwich in combination with the Responsive Center Flex. Combining the unique properties of wood core and carbon fiber, with an advanced flex pattern from a CNC milled 3D deck and concave bottom, the 2010 North Kiteboard range is setting a new standard in per-formance, comfort and durability.
technology leader
The unique thing about the 3D Wood Carbon Cap Sandwich is the fully 3D shaped wood core with the advanced deck flex pattern and concave bottom. This type of advanced step cap sandwich construction, in combination with a concave bottom has previously only been possible to manufacture with foam cores, which have certain limitations regarding flex, core thickness and shear strength. Thanks to our strong R&D focus and collaboration with one of the world’s leading snowboard factories, North Kiteboarding is the first company in the world to intro-duce 3D Wood Carbon Cap Sandwich. This technology opens up a new door for flex development. In terms of kiteboards it means a significant performance boost and a whole new level of comfort for the rider.
why is the 3d wood carbon cap sandwich construction better?
coMfort
The strong, fibrous structure of the wo od core allow for a thinner core profile and a higher amount of bending compared with a traditional foam core, without the risk of breakage. The result is a board with a greater amount of flex, working as an active suspension while riding, pro-viding a smooth and controlled feeling even through rough water.
responsiveness
Thanks to the natural flex characteristics and spring back of the wood core, our new boards have a responsive and lively feel on the water, without sacrificing the comfort. To get that extra boost in the pop we’ve added carbon fiber beams on the Jaime and Pro Series. A further step in technology is the Responsive Center Flex. The result is a highly responsive, yet still forgiving board, with instant feedback to the rider’s input.
textreMe® – spread tow technology
The patented TeXtreme® spread tow makes the compo-site 20% lighter, with unprecedented perfor¬mance. The main reason is that the fibers are straighter in TeXtreme® than instandard carbon reinforcement. As a result of the opti-mized fiber structure, the end product will hold a large amount of carbon fibers, at a minimum size and weight. The outcome of the unique technology is a board with high fiber volume fraction, low weight and enhanced strength.
control
The 3D Wood Carbon Cap Sandwich construction has a higher amount of flex and torsion than a traditional foam core. This allows the board to quickly adapt to every im-pact from the water surface, giving the rider more space for mistakes, without the risk of loosing control. What the rider will experience is a board that’s easy to set up for take off and forgiving in the landings, and maintains good grip when riding full speed through choppy water. On the Jaime and X-Ride, the concave bottom keeps the board sucked to the surface of the water while effortlessly blasting through knee high chop, drawing full speed turns or carving in the waves.
strength
Our wood core has three times higher density than a standard foam core, and much greater strength and impact resistance. Fatigue resistance, the ability to withstand stress caused by thousands of impacts and hard landings over time, has been significantly improved. Heel dents, split cores and cracked laminates are history. The new 3D Wood Carbon Cap Sandwich is the stron-gest construction we’ve ever made, reassuring a long life and functionality for your kiteboard.
3d decks responsive center flex (Select / Team Series / Jaime / XRide / Soleil)
For 2010 we have worked hard to further enhance the feeling and performance of our twin tips through inno-vation. A harmonic flex from front to rear means that the rocker line is actively changing and adapting to the water’s surface, which gives you pro active dampening and absorption of chop. Furthermore, the continuous flex of-fers increased power flow for hard pop, making take-offs easier and more predictable. Our Torsional Absorption System offers smoother, stickier landings, a more solid feel through the water, more grip on the heel-side edge and consequently better upwind performance. Flex Tips give you more control when combined with our lower bottom curve as well as responsive, controllable pop and cushioned, comfortable landings.

High Glossy
custoM epoxy / eps / wood sandwich construction
Derived from windsurf technology, this construction features a high strength to weight ratio with great resistance to dents and perforations, resulting in durable and high performance surf style kiteboards. We’ve put strong focus on optimizing the flex and dampening properties, bringing the feeling and performance close to that of a traditional Clarkfoam / polyester custom board. A new high density “surf-style” core has been developed toge-ther with a wood sandwich / multiaxial fiber glass layup, opti-mizing flex, torsion and dampening. Together with a high glossy polished finish, our 2010 surfboard range has both the looks and performance of a custom board, but with far superior durability! down the line
Building on the success of last year's Kontact series, the new 2010 Kontact is back again as a no-compromise up-size board that is most suited to solid, pumping surf. Let's face it; Kiting allows you to ride with more power and speed than any other form of surfing, so why not take advantage of it? With its rounded pin-tail, gunny outline and low tail rocker the Kontact is incredibly predictable and drives hard off the bottom like no other making it perfect for the most aggressive riders who like ride with speed and power. The board of choice for team riders Sky and Dreu in most conditions, this board holds a rail in even the most extreme and choppy conditions and will never let you down in a high speed turn. Thin rails give the Kontact a lively and positive feel under your feet and the single concave throughout helps carry you through a turn and accelerate up the face. Whether you're charging big waves or using the kite to whip yourself through high speed carves, look no further than the Kontact!
"When it starts getting really windy or the surf gets over 6 feet, I'm on my Kontact. It's got such a solid feel and accelerates harder you push it. Great for strapped riding, feels nice and lively and gives me all the control I need at high speed."

The Wave Attack Model is a radical all-round thruster-fin de-sign aimed at high performance surfing in small to medium size waves. It is the ideal weapon for beach breaks where quick rail to rail acceleration and snappiness off the top are key. Round and compact, this board destroys small waves with its super-tig-ht turning radius. The relatively low entry rocker and width give you a large planing surface while a full single concave gives you plenty of carry when the kite power goes away. Imagine the tig-htest, flowing turns and pumping freely from rail to rail to quickly generate speed for your next bash and you can begin to picture what the WAM is all about. The WAM will please strapped and strapless riders alike and give new life to even the most average wave days.
"I never leave home without packing my WAM in my board bag. It's a must have for beach breaks and so much fun to ride strap-less. Just an incredible all-rounder that turns on a dime! It's even able to handle some of the bigger surf."

JaiMe would go!
Our popular and innovative FreestyleFish is back for it's third-ge-neration with new looks and new style. With a striking new out-line and added grab rails it doesn't just look the part; The FSF is the perfect board to make the most out of less-than-stellar wave conditions, light wind and flat water trickery. At 5'2", it still has plenty of volume to get you up and going thanks to it's wide out-line and full rails, yet is short enough to be functional in even the smallest waves. A great introductory board to wave riding, the FSF is easy to jibe, has a very balanced directional feel and is a terrific light wind weapon! Strapless riding is made easy with the comfortable sky-hooks or throw some foot straps on and shred to your heart's content. Who knows, maybe you don't have to travel to Hawaii to find those perfect waves afterall... “In 2010 the Freestyle Fish will be the ultimate board for both an introduc-tion to kitesurfing on waves as well as high performance strapless surfing. I’m sure there are tons of hours of fun and challenge can-ned inside this board”.

The Race Ltd is a high performance course racing competition board, developed in cooperation with the Race World Champi-on Charles Deleau that indeed smokes upwind and leaves the competition behind! With its CNC-cut G10 quad-fn setup, the Race Ltd is finely tuned for precision performance in the lightest possible breeze and has, without a doubt, the absolute best up-wind performance that has ever been seen in a production kite board. The added length, width and volume offer earlier light wind planing while the added area in the nose also offers more control at high speeds. A three-footstrap configuration makes ji-bing and tacking easy and is comfortable on those long reaches. Whether used as a light-wind weapon or a course racing board, the Race Ltd will open your mind to new realms of kiteboard performance.

Multi adJustable footstrap 2010
The 2010 Multi Adjustable Footstrap offers you a wide range of footstrap sizes and positions with only one strap. Apart from the size you can also adjust the strap’s asymmetry and width. Once fitted to the width and shape of your foot, the strap can be ad-justed in size as usual (with or without booties). The strap’s enhan-ced construction on the inside increases comfort and provides a good hold in combination with the progressive 2010 VARIO PADS. The base fits the North Kiteboarding Footpad Plate for quick and easy mounting– simply “plug and screw”!The S version of the adjustable footstraps was developed for women and generally for smaller feet. Apart form the reduced length and width it is identical to the big footstrap and ensures optimum comfort and support for all maneuvers on the water.
vario footpads 2010
For the footpad we again found a way, how to increase perfor-mance and comfort. The result defines a new level of support, fit and comfort. Particularly, we were able to optimize the hardness grade in the heel and toe area for excellent support. First time ever, you can from now on choose between three levels of soft-ness of your pad. All three different pads are delivered with every footpad and vary from soft, middle to hard. Customized to your special needs and preferences, you’ll for sure find the right setting for you. The footpad plate is still quick and easy to mount, it is scre-wed onto the board with two screws together with the Multi Ad-justable Footstrap 2010. All that’s left to do then, is to step you’re your new slippers and enjoy the ride.
directional footstrap 2010
The directional straps are cushier than ever. Extra foam layers on the inside ensure the most comfortable ride that your feet ever experienced! The strap is now adjustable and can be optimized to every size of feet in seconds! The Flexzones permit maximum range of motion with perfect board control at all times.
s-bend fins 2010
The S-Bend fins are the revolution in fin market. The new design is not just a design, because of design reasons! From the first mo-ment on, they deliver more grip, while gliding free earlier. Especial-ly at hard landings, they rapidly provide a very sticky feel and help to nail more tricks on the water than ever before.

lay back, relax and let go!
That definitely sounds like something that everybody should enjoy from time to time. In kiteboarding this is absolutely possible. However, an uncomfortable harness that doesn’t fit properly or even chafes the skin because the right material was left out in the wrong places, can ruin it all. We at North, don’t like that either and we’d get endless complaints from our teamriders, if they had to kite with sore skin. Luckily for all of us, Jaime’s waist is still soft as a baby’s butt and none of our contest riders, neither Mario nor Cesar or Tom, have ever sent us photos of bruises on their perfect bodies. Ever since we introduced our front plate, North harnesses have been among the most comfortable products of their kind. Overdesigned products are not our world. Functionality, on the other hand, is indispensable! This is what you feel from the very first moment on, but also after lots of great sessions on the water.
styler – Clean Mess
The all time classic of kite waist harnesses! The Styler comes with the familiar Double Hook Attachment and a complete neoprene padding that keeps the harness firmly in place. The Full Protection Hook Mounting System protects you from bruises and rib injuries. The fit of the Air-Styler was also improved and the excess strap lengths are now easier to stow away.
special features:- EVA full mold in the inside- Molded flexzone patches for more moving comfort- Flex belt construction- Full protected hookplate- New shorter hook for more reactive bar feel and control- Double Hook attachment for better load distribution
wonder.bar – Toxic Trash
All NKB harnesses come with the North Wonder.Bar. With its closure at the harness hook, the strap only needs to be adjusted once. The U-claw makes it really easy to get in and out of the harness. The system ensures optimum safety, even under extreme conditions. The new shorter hook ensures more reactive bar feel and control.

Slipping was yesterday and the wearing comfort remains unsurpassed! If dangling straps bo-thered you in the past you’ll no longer find a reason to complain: the strap pockets were enlarged sufficiently to accommodate all excess straps.

iMpact vest – Waist
A little padding around the chest does not make an impact vest. Only a perfectly fitting vest will reliably protect you, when you hit the water surface. We used an internal Velcro neoprene strap sy-stem that can be individually adjusted for a perfect fit. Once ad-justed, the vest is easy to put on and take off by opening the strap at the lateral zip. Additional connection straps keep the vest firmly attached to the harness and hold the vest at the correct position. As always, we offer two versions of the Impact Vest: one for seat harnesses and one for waist harnesses (without protection in the harness area)

north kiteboarding – workbook 2010 114
north lexicon 2010backstallThe kite loses power and flies in a backward direction. Letting go of the control bar can end the backstall.
bar pressureSame as Sheeting Force
belly downThe position used for leaving a kite on the beach unat-tended. The leading edge upwind and the underside of the kite is down.
belly upThe position a kite sometimes takes during relaunch when the leading edge is toward the rider and the underside of the kite is toward the sky.
bowA kite design originally defined by four key characteristics: (a) a flatter arc than previously was common, (b) swept back out line, (c) bridle supporting the leading edge and (d) pul-lies on the control bar needed to reduce bar stroke.
bridleAny of a number of systems where the kite leading edge is supported by a web of lines.
c kiteThe original type of 4-line kite with a “C” shaped arc and little or no sweep in the out-line.
canopy shapesThis usually refers to the profile of the canopy – the curve that it forces the wind to take while traveling from leading edge to trailing edge.
crispA kite that powers up with a small bar motion is crisp. A kite can be so crisp that is is uncomfortable to fly. This is a common problem with kites that are 8 meters and smaller.
dacron (where it makes sence, where it’s just a gimmick, where it’s stupid)Dacron is useful in areas of high load, such as inflated ele-ments and tip reinforcements. It is also useful for improving control over canopy profile in certain critically important areas – mostly areas where a flat profile is desired.
deltaIn engineering the term ‘delta’ is symbolized by a triangle. A delta kite has an outline that looks somewhat trangular from the side, hence the name.
depowerWhen the rider sheets out the kite depowers.
depower strokeThe distance traveled by the control bar when going from completely sheeted in to completely sheeted out.
flat deltaA delta outline combined with a flat arc.
flying speedThe speed of a kite through the wind window. Small kites tend to have very high flying speed. Big kites tend to have slower flying speed.
hang tiMeA kite that is good at keeping the rider hanging in the air during a jump is said to have good hang time.
high endThe ability of a kite to comfor-tably handle wind strengths at the top end of its design range.
hybridThis term signifies kites that are neither “bow” nor “C” kites. This term is not so useful anymore as fewer and fewer kites fit the original definition of a bow.
liftA kite that picks a rider up quickly and high is said to have good lift.
linear powerdevelopMentKite power increases in a linear manner as the bar is sheeted in.
linear bar feelThe bar pressure increases in a linear manner as the bar is sheeted in. A kite can have linear power development without having linear bar feel.
low endThe power a kite can deve-lope at the lower end of its designed wind range.
Mini bridleA minimal bridle.
MushyA kite that powers up too gra-dually as the bar is sheeted in is said to have mushy bar feel.
nose downThe position a kite takes during relaunch when the leading edge is on the water and the underside of the kite is facing the rider.
oversheetingSheeting in too much – pulling the control bar too close to the body – can cause a kite to lose power and backstall.
power upWhen the rider sheets in the kite powers up.
relaunch The process of causing a kite to fly up from the water after a crash.
riding coMfortA completely subjective issue. A kite that is comfortable for a novice may be boring for an expert, while a kite that is comfortable for an expert may to too challenging for an intermediate rider.
sheeting forceThe overall force required to pull the control bar closer to the rider’s body.
stabilityA kite is said to be stable if it behaves in a desirable and predictable way throughout its design wind range and even in wind that is unsteady.
sheetingWhile flying a four- or five-line kite, to increase or decrease kite power by moving the control bar closer to or farther from the rider’s body. To “Sheet in” is to move the bar closer to the body. To “Sheet out” is to move the bar farther from the body.
steering force The force required to turn the kite. This can be broken down into (a) the force required to initiate a turn and (b) the force required to maintain turning speed. This can be further broken down into the force required when the kite is sheeted in verses sheeted out.
steering precisionA measure of how quick and linear the response of the kite is to steering input. Linear response means the stronger the input, the quicker the steering response. Quick and linear is good for wave riding but not so much for unhooked tricks.
unhooked Riding or performing tricks while the riders harness hook is not engaged with the rider’s chickenloop.
unhooked handlingPerforming tricks while unhoo-ked requires a kite that has good unhooked handing. Such a kite is stable and rela-tively unresponsive to minor steering inputs. The kite should turn quickly when steered very positively (as for kite loops), but should not turn when given light, spurious steering inputs. The kite should also not generate big spikes in power when looping and it should be highly resistant to backstall.
