Greetings FrOm ThE NIC FOUNDATION AND ALUmNI ASSOCIATIONWe are sending you this 2007 Year in Review to keep you informed about the latest happenings at NIC, how your investments are improving the lives of thousands each year, and to share areas of need you may be interested in supporting.

As friends and alumni of North Idaho College, you play an extremely important role in the future of NIC.

You understand that NIC makes an important contribution to the social, cultural, and economic quality of life throughout our region. And, like public institutions everywhere, NIC must look beyond its traditional sources of support. Property taxes, state appropriations, and student tuition must be supplemented with private donations if the college is to maintain the level of educational excellence the people of North Idaho deserve.

Please let us know if you find this report valuable and how we might improve it. Complete our brief survey at www.nic.edu/foundation by December 31, 2007, and you will be entered to win two great prizes! See the back cover for details.

Warmest Regards,

NIC Foundation - 1977-2007

Celebrating 30 years

NIC was born during the challenges of the Great Depression on the heels of incredible hard work and perseverance by our community’s forefathers. With endorsements by businesses, the

local school district, women’s groups, numerous civic organizations, and the Coeur d’Alene Press, the college opened its doors in the fall of 1933. With 55 eager students, paying $35 a semester for tuition, the seed for higher education opportunities in North Idaho was firmly planted.

NIC’s history will soon be unveiled in a new book titled “The Gathering Place: A History of North Idaho College.” The book will be available in the fall of 2008 as part of NIC’s 75th Diamond Jubilee Celebration.

Stay tuned for more community-wide birthday celebration details!

“NIC was the most affordable option for me. Most people think that there’s nothing to do at a community college, but that’s not true of NIC. There’s intramural sports, an outdoor recreation program, collegiate sports, and an activities center with shuffleboard, pool and a plasma TV. It’s not just an education here, it feels like home.”

NIC FOUNDATION SUPPOrTS ExCELLENCE ThrOUGh AWArDS AND GrANTS

The NIC Foundation awarded 19 grants for a total of $50,707 in 2006-07 through the NIC Foundation Grant Program, which is funded by annual donations and Really BIG Raffle proceeds. Since 1994, the NIC Foundation has awarded 149 grants totaling $668,887 to faculty, staff, and student groups at NIC through the grant program.

In addition, the NIC Foundation awarded numerous awards to exceptional NIC staff and faculty at the annual employee awards ceremony last spring.

“This scholarship means a lot to me. It demonstrates that I’ve done something positive with my life. It helps me support my family while I go to school and helps decrease the amount of loans, which directly influences how much education I can attain. Mostly it just means I’m on the right track to my future.”

rEALLY BIG rAFFLE WINNEr IN AUDIENCE – FIrST TImE EVEr!David and Kerri Adler of Missoula, Montana, were the grand prize winners of the new home, built by the NIC Carpentry Program students, in the 14th annual Really BIG Raffle. They also became the first home winners ever to be present at the drawing when their winning ticket was announced! Over $335,000 in prizes were awarded on July 11, 2007.

The raffle continues to be a huge success for the Foundation, netting over $180,000 this year. Proceeds will be used to support student and program needs. The NIC Carpentry students are already hard at work constructing the next home located at 2806 Marceille Drive in Coeur d’Alene. Tickets are on sale now for the July 9, 2008 drawing. For full details and to purchase tickets, visit www.nic.edu/foundation or call 208.769.3271.

The North Idaho College Foundation awarded $343,530 in scholarships to 362 students in the 2006-2007 school year. The scholarships were made possible through contributions from literally hundreds of donors.

“Scholarships provide help and hope for students who might not otherwise be able to pursue their dreams,” said NIC Foundation Executive Director Rayelle Anderson. “Scholarships are a solid investment and provide opportunities and encouragement for those fortunate enough to be assisted by a scholarship award.”

Each November, the NIC Foundation brings together donors and the many deserving students who benefit from their philanthropy for the annual Fall Scholarship Celebration as a way for both groups to learn more about each other.

A donor can establish a new scholarship or contribute to an existing scholarship

fund. The Foundation works with each donor to set up the criteria for which the scholarship is distributed. To donate to scholarships, call the NIC Foundation at 208.769.5978 or give online at www.nic.edu/foundation.

You have the power to change a life…

Students in North Idaho College’s renowned Associate’s Degree Nursing program enroll for a variety of reasons. Some for better pay, others for a chance at a lifelong career. Still there is one attribute that most nursing students share—the desire to help people.

Like most nontraditional college students, nursing student Greg Sapp worked to balance the demands of being a college student while trying to make ends meet for his wife Leeanne, and their three daughters, 6-year-old Daphne, 3-year-old Ayiana, and 1-year-old Madelyn, all of Rathdrum. Greg was entering his second and final year in NIC’s nursing program and was well on his way to reaching his goal when tragedy struck his family.

It was the day after Christmas 2005 when the Sapp’s youngest daughter Madelyn woke her parents in the middle of the night. What started as a fever rapidly worsened. In one devastating night, the Sapps discovered it was an infection in the bloodstream that caused their 1-year-old daughter to slip into a coma and eventually suffer a massive stroke. Maddie passed away Dec. 28, 2005, seven days after her first birthday.

While facing such tragedy in his personal life, Greg could have easily decided to drop out prior to his final semester, but the NIC nursing students and staff wouldn’t let him. Greg felt their support almost immediately.

“We went to school all those years to learn how to care for other people,” said nursing graduate Dan Franklin of Dalton Gardens, a former classmate of Greg’s. “So when we had the opportunity to care for one of our own who was in need, someone in our immediate family that was going through the worst grief imaginable, we were ready to do anything it took. That’s what nursing is all about.”

Prior to commencement, the graduating nursing class of 2006 established a memorial scholarship in honor of Madelyn to be given each year to a struggling second-year nursing student. The class set a goal to raise $5,000, which is the minimum amount needed to endow a scholarship, allowing it to live in perpetuity with the interest earnings of the fund awarded each year as a scholarship.

“I can’t express how much it means to me to have Maddie’s name tied to something so positive that will live on forever,” Leeanne said.

In just over a month, the scholarship reached the $5,000 endowment level and the contributions are still flowing in over a year later. Greg now works in the Coronary Care Unit of Kootenai Medical Center and more than 30 of his coworkers in the unit decided to use a portion of a departmental incentive to contribute to the fund, which currently sits at more than $7,000.

“This speaks to the kind of people nurses are,” Greg said. “We spend our lives taking care of other people and we all take care of each other too.”

To contribute to the Madelyn Isabella Sapp Memorial Scholarship, send a tax-deductible donation to the North Idaho College Foundation, 1000 W. Garden Avenue, Coeur d’Alene, ID, 83814 or call 208.769.5978 for more information.

COLLEGE SUPPOrTEr DONATES POrTION OF ESTATE TO NIC

Elisabeth Scates, who passed away in January 2007, cared about her community and North Idaho College. She believed in education and was committed to giving—both in life and in death.

Through her will, Elisabeth made arrangements to contribute $12,000 to benefit the John Dunlop Memorial Scholarship, which she and her husband of 22 years, retired dentist Robert (Bob) Scates, established in 2003 in memory of Elisabeth’s son John Dunlop. Dunlop, who attended NIC in 1968-1969, died at a young age and Elisabeth wanted to ensure he was remembered through a fund to help NIC students.

“This scholarship fund is a wonderful example of how a loved one’s memory can live on forever through charitable giving,” said NIC Foundation Executive Director Rayelle Anderson. “NIC students will continue to reap the rewards of the Scates’ philanthropy for years to come.”

To learn more about establishing a named fund or making North Idaho College part of your estate plan, call the NIC Foundation at 208.769.5978.

AlumnioftheYearMikkiStevens

NIC Culinary Arts Instructor Mikki Stevens, ’68, was selected by the NIC Alumni Association as the 2007 Alumni of the Year for her commitment to both the college and the community.

Stevens was born and raised in Coeur d’Alene and is a Coeur d’Alene High School graduate. She earned an associate’s degree from NIC in 1968 and was active at the community college. She later earned a master’s degree in adult and organizational learning from the University of Idaho and has continued to take classes throughout her career. Stevens has worked as an instructor in NIC’s Culinary Arts program since 1999.

Thirteen years ago, Stevens founded the Red Hot Mamas, a nonprofit dance and comedy troupe.

“Mikki is well-known and loved wherever she goes,” said NIC Alumni Relations Coordinator Sara Fladeland. “With her service to the college and community, including more than 25 service organizations, she is most deserving of this award.”

HonoraryAlumnioftheYearEdieMcCormick

NIC Ponderay Center Educational Resource Coordinator Edie McCormick was selected as the NIC Alumni Association’s 2007 Honorary Alumnus of the Year in

You have the power to change a life…

Education is a silver bullet, according to NIC alumnus Tim Fort of Kellogg, Idaho.

Fort was working at Wal-Mart and going through a divorce in the summer of 2004. He was lying on the beach on his day off when the silver bullet hit him.

Fort, whose furthest level of education at the time was a general education diploma (GED), pondered going into management for Wal-Mart or going back to school.

“I didn’t really know which one would be the best,” Fort said. “A job and have a decent paycheck with Wal-Mart or go to school and not have an income for two to three years. I said a prayer and decided to go with the one that came through first. School fell right into place, so I went with it.

“It wasn’t just getting an education, it was also learning new job skills with an actual future to it.”

Fort entered the Computer Information Technology program at North Idaho College and became an NIC Ambassador, helping to inform other students of NIC’s programs and services. He also served as president of the honor society Phi Theta Kappa, volunteered for the NIC

Foundation’s Community Campaign, and was the 2004-2005 Hugh “Olin” Smith Scholarship recipient.

Three years after enrolling at NIC, Fort graduated with an associate’s degree and several computer certifications to enhance his employability.

Fort is now working as the lead computer technician for the Kellogg School District and is an active member of the NIC Alumni Association.

“The more educated a person is, the more opportunities they have,” Fort said, “which usually translates into a person being more involved in their community.”

NEW LEADErShIP AT NICThe North Idaho College Board of Trustees announced in July of 2007 the selection of Priscilla Bell, Ph.D., as the college’s eighth president. The selection of Bell concluded a national search process, guided by the Association of Community College Trustees, to replace former NIC President Michael Burke after he accepted a position as president of San Jose City College in California.

Bell most recently served as president of Highline Community College in Des Moines, Wash., from 2000-2006. Prior to Highline, Bell served as president of Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Johnstown, N.Y., from 1995-2000.

“I am committed to leading NIC to an even better, brighter future,” Bell said. “NIC is and will remain the higher education institution of hope, opportunity, and choice for our region – the place where students achieve their dreams. Our region is changing rapidly and NIC will change with it.”

To address the community’s needs, Bell organized industry, civic, and economic leaders to provide input on how the college could better contribute to the overall economic health of the region. The group, called Partners in Education, will assist the college in identifying labor market needs as well as developing short- and long-term educational programs to help meet those needs.

CONNECTING FAmILIES WITh SErVICEmEN AND WOmEN IN IrAqIn collaboration with the Family Readiness Group and several other organizations, North Idaho College made the 2006 holiday season a little brighter for dozens of families of active servicemen and women in the Inland Northwest. With help from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s TeleEngineering Operations Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and the use of interactive videoconferencing technology, NIC connected more than 10 families to their loved ones in Iraq, offering the opportunity to speak with and see those they deeply missed.

DONOr SPOTLIGhT: ı rON NILSON ıThrough a special partnership between the North Idaho Manufacturing Consortium (NIMC) and the North Idaho College Foundation, a new Trades and Industry Scholarship Fund has been established for students at NIC.

The cooperative effort is designed to reach out to high school and non-traditional students to encourage them to consider education and training in NIC’s Trades and Industry programs.

These scholarship funds specifically target potential students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend NIC, as well as educate them about the potential of a career in trades and industry professions.

Additional funds through the Workforce Investment Act were made available through the Idaho Department of Labor for students hoping to pursue immediate employment through NIC’s Trades and Industry programs.

To donate, please contact the NIC Foundation at 208.769.5978 or online at www.nic.edu/foundation.

“We have an opportunity to show the college and community working hand in hand,” said Ron Nilson, president

of the NIMC and president and CEO of Ground Force Manufacturing. “There are good jobs waiting for trained, educated workers in the region.”

The ninth annual Wild Game Feast is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 at North Idaho College. Reserve tickets by calling the NIC Alumni Association at 208.769.5978 or e-mail [email protected].

Although NIC provides wonderful educational opportunities at a reasonable price, the reality is that the majority of our students would be unable to attend college without the assistance of scholarships, grants, and student loans.
