  • ationwide, celebrations for SG50 may be winding down but our joyous spirit certainly hasnt! Our happiness in participating at several events in various divisions across the North East District still resonates, and with good reason too,

for residents took the opportunity to come together in large numbers to bond and connect.

Many events were held across the North East District to mark Singapores Golden Jubilee. These ranged from the formal such as the Eunos in Harmony, Our Home book launch to commemorate Singapores Golden Jubilee by capturing the community bonds forged over the past 30 years (page 6), to the fun and informal such as the fl ash mob of singers, dancers, buskers and residents who broke out in song on 20 June at the Tampines Bus Interchange. A Tampines Celebrates SG50 initiave, the fl ash mob was organised to show how residents can make a difference in the community (page 5).

You can also read what SG50 means to some North East residents on page 12, among them a family with young children, a youth volunteer and a member of the Pioneer Generation. Have fun jogging your memory too on page 10, as you take a walk down memory lane with fellow residents and relive watershed moments in our nations history.

We would also like to welcome Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister in the Prime Ministers Offi ce, as Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Association, and a new group of Grassroots Advisers who have joined our North East family. You can fi nd out more about them on pages 15-17.

  • Residents of Punggol Damai can now look forward to a caf and a library at their

doorstep, thanks to the new Punggol Damai Residents Committee (RC) Centre. Situated at Block 613A Punggol Drive, the centre also hosts a community resource centre which offers services such as the rental of hardware tools.

The centre was offi cially opened by Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, Mr Teo Chee Hean on 25 July 2015. Volunteers have worked hard to roll out various initiatives for the enjoyment of residents, said Mr Teo, citing a well-received durian

feast of Mao Shan Wang and Wang Zhong Wang premium durians on 4 July 2015. He also praised the RCs efforts to foster a kampung spirit in the neighbourhood, including an initiative to encourage residents young and old to participate in a series of handicraft-making sessions. Together, residents recreated everyday items from the kampung days such as a sampan and a fi shing net. These have since been placed around the neighbourhood in an effort to educate younger residents about Singapores transformation from a fi shing village to a modern metropolis.

Growing up, Mohamad Rausyan Bin Mohamad Yaacob was a hyperactive child unable to sit still,

much less pay attention in class not surprising given his diagnosis of autism and severe language defi ciency. His parents were advised to introduce him to sports so that the young Rausyan

could channel his boundless energy into something productive. In those early days, the family Rausyans elder brother, mother and father would play a game of badminton with

him, in their fl at at Serangoon Central. Fast forward some years later

and Rausyan, now 20, has had the distinction of representing Singapore at the Special Olympic Games 2011 held in Athens, Greece. He came out tops, clinching Gold in the Mens Singles category and Silver in the Mens Doubles for Badminton. Rausyan

also swims, bowls and plays table tennis actively. In fact, he represented Singapore in bowling at the 8th ASEAN Para Games that Singapore hosted in December.

Rausyan has never expressed that he enjoys these activities but when we introduced him to each sport, he was very receptive and hes naturally gifted at

these sports too, says his father Yaacob Bin Madon, 50, clearly proud of what the younger of his two sons has accomplished. He believes that Rausyans shortcomings should not be

an obstacle to achieving great things.

However, Mr Yaacob is the familys sole breadwinner and Rausyans sporting equipment and professional coaching fees are costly. Being a benefi ciary of the North East Community Development Council (CDC) Special Talent Fund since 2014 has helped ease things somewhat though.

The fund has enabled Rausyan to hone his skills as well as to purchase the sporting gear he needs for competitions, he says. Im thankful that he can take his passion in sports as far as he wishes to, with the support of the CDC.

Mr Teo also highlights how the Pioneer Generation (PG) Ambassadors are actively reaching out to our Pioneers, to help them understand how the PG Package helps to take care of their medical expenses. ince he started serving in Pasir Ris in 1997, Mr Teo Chee Hean, 60, has witnessed how

the town has changed. I remember attending many baby shows and cuddling cute babies. And our babies have grown up now. Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, tells Heartbeat how Pasir Ris Punggol and its residents have transformed over the years.

This year has been eventful for Singapore and Singaporeans. Mr Teo is heartened to see Singaporeans standing united, in mourning the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, and celebrating the 28th SEA Games and SG50. This is what makes us stronger, as one people, as one nation. The many ground-up initiatives by residents help to strengthen the community spirit in Pasir Ris-Punggol, and also national cohesion and solidarity. Such activities remind us to focus and build on what we have in common, even as we provide room to celebrate our diversity. Mr Teo hopes that each generation will leave behind a Singapore that is even better for the next. He says, I am confi dent that we can continue to succeed as a nation, if Singaporeans stay united as one people, and work together with the Government, to live out our dreams as individuals, and collectively as a country.

privileged rather than pressured to have been tasked with this once-in-a-lifetime role. Its not just my work; its the work of so many people who have been so engaged and who feel so deeply about Singapores 50th anniversary, says the 54 year-old.

Set up in August 2013 to plan Singapores Jubilee celebrations, the committee worked with various stakeholders and partners to co-ordinate meaningful programmes and encourage ground-up participation in SG50 celebrations. The SG50 Celebration Fund initiative that supported ground-up initiatives saw a better than expected response with more than 300 projects supported by the middle of 2015. Mr Heng says he has been most impressed by the enthusiasm showed by Singaporeans from all walks of life. Each of us would like to remember SG50 in different ways and each of us have certain special memories. It was great to have many different ideas come together on this platform.

Indeed, SG50-related events and programmes have been varied and plenty, true to Singapores cultural diversity. There has been something for everyone to celebrate; something

for everyone to remember, says Mr Heng, who is the Adviser to Tampines GROs. In his constituency, for example, residents were encouraged to contribute their favourite red or white items to be photographed. The photos were then assembled into mural collages to form the outlines of some of Singapores icons and landmarks. At least 250 such installations could be spotted across Tampines.

But even as SG50 winds down, celebrations are far from over. Major ongoing events include The Future of Us Exhibition, which runs until March 2016 at Gardens by the Bay. For this exhibition, we have invited Singaporeans to come together to share ideas about their hopes and aspirations for the country, and what they can do to take Singapore forward, says Mr Heng.

Mr Heng Swee Keat, Adviser to Tampines GROs, is happy to see Singaporeans wearing their patriotism on their sleeves.

There were no machines at the time, so we would have to pave a road by hand,

fi rst using a cangkul (hoe) to plough it, and then adding layers of tar. Technology and machinery have made life a lot easier for the young. But they mustnt forget how far weve come. Theres always something more to do, something to learn, something to achieve. Thats the Singapore spirit.

I got involved in the North East Community Development Councils

programmes four years ago at the encouragement of Dr Thomas Koo, one of my lecturers at ITE College East, who is an active volunteer himself.

Were a close-knit family that enjoys spending time together.

The kids look forward to visiting the parks because there theyre free to run around without worrying about us scolding them! Singapores education system makes it an ideal place to raise kids. My wife and I want our children to pick up qualities such as honesty, resilience and tolerance, and our schools emphasise these. These are the values which will drive the next generation forward. But I hope that as Singaporeans progress, we dont lose our national identity its important that traits like our kampung spirit dont die, because they remind us that were one big Singapore family.

This unity really shone through during National Day when the entire country sang Home together. The kids cant get enough of that song; they sing it everywhere; in the car, in the shower, and they know every word! I think the song sums up our feelings for the nation: this is home, truly.

I now try to volunteer every weekend, and gravitate towards programmes that cater to our countrys pioneers

as I enjoy listening to stories of the past. The can do spirit of our seniors never fails

to amaze me; it encourages me to look at my own problems with a positive attitude. I invite my friends to join me at community events so that they can also do their bit. Ive realised that we all have a part to play to ensure that nobody gets left behind as we move towards SG100. As the popular National Day song goes, we should all stand up for Singapore and do the best we can for one another.

MS AMY TOH, 22, a Wellness, Lifestyle and Spa management student at Republic Polytechnic. She is a familiar face in the district, volunteering in programmes such as Wish Upon A Silver Star and SG50 Give Thanks. Upon graduating in 2016, Ms Toh hopes to start an event management business.

MR KHAIRUL AMIN, 34, a staff of North East CDC, and his wife, Mdm Halimaton, 34, a primary school teacher. The couple has four children: Syed Al Hannan, 12; Nurul Hannah, 8; Eimanuel Hannan, 7; Ziekriy Hannan, 5. When asked about what they would like to see in Singapore in the future, Nurul is the rst to answer: More beautiful parks with big trees for us to play in! All four children were spellbound by this years National Day Parade, which they watched as a family at home.

I WAS SLIGHTLY APPREHENSIVE AT FIRST BUT AFTER A FEW EVENTS, I GREW TO LOVE BEING A VOLUNTEER.
