HIGH INTEREST TRAINING TOPICS & ATTENDANCE

CCE 2014-2015 highlights 2015 was a year for transformative partnerships and educational growth in manufacturing, health care, safety and personal development for adult learners.

97175_Inside.indd 12 8/26/15 11:29 AM

Health care safetyCCE again brought a series of ergonomic safety training sessions to long-term health care facilities in Northern Michigan, from Grayling to St. Ignace, teaching 600-plus employees how to lift and transport patients safely, avoid injury and illness, and remain safe on the job. These programs help keep health care workers and their facilities safe and productive.

Manufacturing trainingCCE partnered with eight area manufacturing companies, Networks Northwest and the Northeast Michigan Consortium to bring more than $300,000 in grant funds to Northern Michigan to train 543 skilled workers and create 40 new positions.

Employees of Moeller Aerospace, Link Industries, Wojan Windows & Doors, JB Webb, Central Industrial, Petoskey Plastics, Tube Fab and Honeywell all received hands-on instruction on advanced manufacturing equipment, software, Lean operations and more. The customized instruction took place at company sites in Emmet, Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties, helping those areas preserve high-skill manufacturing positions.

Youth employment successCCE’s Youth 4 Success programs served 124 youth in Gaylord, Cheboygan and Johannesburg during the past year, helping them graduate from high school or pass their GED, find work, apply to college and achieve their goals. Many of these students continued their education at North Central.

Agricultural business educationCCE’s farming programs have continued to grow over the last three years. This year, CCE scheduled 45 workshops and events. Topics included fungi, beekeeping, vineyard management and farm-related businesses. In addition to the workshops attended by nearly 600 people, CCE hosted a number of agriculturally-focused events:

• Around the Table: Roundtable Discussion on Local Food & Farming attracted 80 farmers, purchasers, chefs and local food lovers to create ways to support local agriculture.

• Local Food Alliance monthly potlucks brought together advocates from farming, retail, health care, arts, foundations and education to develop programs to increase the availability of local food and support area farmer businesses.

• 4th Annual Wine Competition and Tasting allowed student vintners and professional wine-makers to compete. Sommeliers and wine professionals judged nearly 80 entries and awarded prizes to the winning wine-makers at the wine tasting on May 13.

“If I can find the time to go to college with six kids, anyone can. Don’t let life get in the way.”

Cari Griffin Cari Griffin, of Boyne City, started

her family early and never had time to consider college, but

when daughter Sydney enrolled at North Central, she decided

the time was right. Cari not only proved a mother of six can juggle the demands of school and family

life, she proved North Central can truly help you realize your

dreams. She’s been accepted to the University of Michigan, where she’ll further her focus in history

and literature and obtain her doctoral degree.

Lecture SeriesFor more than 20 years, North Central has offered the community the opportunity to hear celebrities, authors and experts in a wide variety of fields through its free Lecture Series programs. In 2014-15, Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise and Marvel Comics Creative Director Bill Rosemann spoke to a packed house at the College. Luncheon LecturesThe Luncheon Lectures provide outstanding local and regional speakers for the community every semester. More than 1,300 individuals attend this lecture series yearly.

Life-long learningIn partnership with the Petoskey District Library, North Central began a series of intellectual adventures and great conversations led by North Central professors. Learners of all ages enjoyed programs on classical art, Jerusalem, yoga and more.

International programsCCE, with many faculty and community partners, hosted eight presentations on global issues ranging from Iceland to Ebola, Little Traverse Bay Band history to business in China. More than 500 people of all ages attended these free events.

One of our main criteria for selecting a location for a new business is that it has a college in the town. Colleges add vitality, stability and positively affect not only the students, but raise the quality of life for the community.

celebration of Veterans Day each year.

• Thousands of community members attend events at North Central, from the annual meeting for the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance to our annual community cookout.

• The College hosts Quiz Bowl competitions for area high schools and annually supports the Petoskey High School Quiz Bowl team.

• We provide a winter location for the local farmers market.

• Our gym courts are available for area schools and organizations. In 2014-15, there were 14,859 users of the courts, and 16,400 users of our free walking track.

• The Harris Gardens showcase the artistic brilliance of 26 internationally-renowned sculptors and offer a place for walks, reflection and study.

• The 195-acre Natural Area is home to a dozen different biotic communities, both upland and wetland, and offers trails and walking paths for visitors to enjoy the beauty and solitude of the forest, fields, streams and wetlands.
