When Joe Logan and his wife Michelle decided tobegin doing custom concrete and asphalt crushing inthe greater Richmond, VA area, they were taking theirstep of entrepreneurial faith based on Joe’s years ofexperience heavy equipment sales. It was not a deci-sion made on a whim or one made in haste. They wereembarking on a new business plan that followed oneof the oldest secrets to success in the world of busi-ness and finance: “Find a need, and fill it!”
“That is what we decided to do,” said Joe Logan,during a recent interview with Waste HandlingEquipment News. “Even though the economy was notin the best of shape, we decided that it was time to gointo business for ourselves,” he said. “That was inearly 2010. Since then, the company has continued togrow and we are excited to say that we are consider-ing expanding our business in 2012.”
Joe recalled how he grew up in the heavy equipmentindustry working with his grandfather, who started anequipment dealership in Maryland in the late 1930s.“I grew up working at that dealership,” he said. “Fromthe time I was about 16, I worked in the shop duringthe summer and over holiday breaks from school.After I graduated from college, I went to work for thedealership full time as a sales representative. Whenthe opportunity presented itself to move to theRichmond, VA area for that dealership, Michelle and Imade the move and I became the area representativefor the business here in the Richmond/Tidewaterarea. That was six years ago.”
It was during this time that Joe began to see thatthere was a need for custom concrete and asphaltcrushing that was going unmet in his marketing area.He found that there was an absence of any quarryoperations east of Richmond, which made the cost of
aggregates for building projects increasingly expensivebecause of transportation costs. More importantly, hecould see that there was an opportunity for a locallybased business to provide basic crushing and screen-ing of recycled concrete aggregate as well as recycledasphalt paving material (RAP). At the time, customershad to rely on companies that were as far as 500 milesaway.
Joe felt that he could provide a much needed serv-ice, offering customers the confidence that they gainfrom dealing someone on a face to face basis. “It hasbeen my experience that customers prefer to talk tosomeone in person. Our customers know they can callus if an issue arises, and within an hour or two, amember of our management team will be there toaddress it. That was a guiding principle when startingthe business, and strong relationships with ourcustomers are what have helped build our company.”
Joe determined that with the right equipment andmarketing plan, he could meet local contractorscrushing needs, on site. While most crushing contrac-tors focused on doing the crushing of large stockpilesof material at central locations, there were none whofocused on doing the work at the actual site or at roadprojects. Joe felt that he could process material atthese job sites, while at the same time, he would besaving them the cost of having their C&D concreteand asphalt material hauled away, crushed andreturned to the jobsite as sub-base material. He coulddo the work right there and save his customers timeand money all in one process.
“That was when Michelle and I began LoganAggregate Recycling, Inc.,” he said. “We bought asmall portable crusher and a small portable screen.Michelle did the office work and I ran the equipment.
Before long, we not only needed more help with themanagement of the company, but we needed larger,more powerful equipment to get the work done quick-ly and efficiently.”
“We got together with Dave Bleeks ofCommonwealth Equipment, based here in Richmond.
He introduced us to the new McCloskey I-44 trackedimpactor and the S-130 screener that we are usingtoday. We also bought the McCloskey 80 foot trackedconveyor with belt scale, to help us move materialmore quickly after it is crushed and screened. We pur-chased the first I-44 in North America!” he added.
Not long after that, the Logans found that theyneeded to increase the size of their workforce as well.“Through mutual friends, Brian Beckstoffer heardthat we were expanding and inquired about managingthe operational side of the business for us,” saidLogan. “He knew that I was the one who was makingthe sales contacts and bidding the jobs, and he hadexperience in another industry, managing large jobswhere construction workers were busy doing variousaspects of building projects. We agreed that he couldlearn the important points of contract crushing whilehe was overseeing the H.R. and taking care of the dayto day operations. He also would serve as project man-ager in my absence while I was out bidding on newjobs. Brian has done a fantastic job for us since wehired him in mid-2011.”
Crushing at Lee’s PitBrian agreed. “I’ve enjoyed coming aboard and over-
seeing jobs like this one,” he said as we met at acrushing job at one of the area’s leading constructionand paving company’s former sand and gravel opera-tions. It is now a materials storage site nearWilliamsburg, VA. “Joe is up in suburban Washington,DC at a pre-construction meeting for a new projecttoday so I’m here at the Lee’s Pit working with thecrushing crew as they go about the recycling of someof this asphalt material. We plan to work at this forabout a week, while the customer uses the RAP insome of the paving material that they are making for

Logan from 3one of their current projects. Once we have filled thatneed, we will move over to this stockpile of concrete,”he said, motioning to a neatly stacked accumulationof concrete debris behind him. “We will have about amonth’s crushing to do, once we begin that part of thejob.”
Brian noted that the crews currently are working intwo shifts, with two equipment operators for eachshift. “We work from six in the morning until nine atnight,” he said. “We overlap the shifts by an hour sothat the two crews can work together to do mainte-nance and repair of the equipment as needed, and tocommunicate between crews so that the job will gomore smoothly. They work very well together. With theMcCloskey equipment that we have on site right now,the only things we have to do is refuel the equipmentand do the scheduled maintenance or change screensas needed and keep going.”
Joe said that the choice of the McCloskey I-44tracked impactor and the S-130 tracked screen sys-tem, has given his company the kind of portability andcrushing capacity that he needs to do the small tomedium sized jobs at which his company excels.
“We have little in the way of lost time when we relo-cate the equipment. This is the most powerful crush-er and screen system that we can use without specialtransportation permits,” he said. “We can call one ofour custom haulers, have the equipment loaded,moved to another job site and set up and ready tocrush by the follow day’s afternoon. More important-ly, we do not have to wait for permits to move theequipment. Since we specialize in smaller crushingprojects, this equipment gives us the advantage thatwe need to do this kind of work.”
“We do the smaller jobs for a flat rate, but the larg-er projects, those over about 5,000 tons, are contract-
ed on a tonnage rate.”Brian said that he finds the mobility of the tracked
equipment extremely helpful because they can makeshort moves like the one planned for this job site in afew minutes, without the need for trucks to haul theequipment from one place to another.
“I also like the personal satisfaction of being able tosatisfy a customer by being able to get in, do theircrushing and then get out quickly so that they can dotheir work,” he said. “That is especially helpful at thesite prep jobs where we go in and crush the concrete,sometimes in a confined space. We crush what theyhave removed from the existing structure, roadway orrunway, and then they reuse it as fill material for thesite prep of the new project. Sowhen it was time to upgrade his crush-ing and screening equipment, he calledupon McCloskey Equipment’s Rich-mond, VA dealership, Common-wealthEquipment Screening and CrushingSystems. “It was an easy decision to make,” hesaid. “The equipment is very portable,yet powerful. More importantly,Commonwealth Equipment has two fulltime service reps stationed inRichmond, so they are available if andwhen we might need them. Thosecontract crushers were expensive andoften required higher fees just to comein and set up to do the work. With ourextremely portable, mobile equipment,we can get in, set up and perform thework efficiently. That makes our cus-tomers very happy.”
“Having the ability to crush, screenand stockpile material the way we do, isreassuring to our customers,” said Joe.“With the 80 foot track mounted, con-veyor with belt scales, we can accurate-ly determine how much finished mate-rial we have crushed and screenedwhile at the same time, we can effec-tively stockpile crushed material forour customer’s use. Customers preferour method of stockpiling with the con-veyor versus using a rubber tired loaderbecause loaders can compact the mate-rial or contaminate it with carry-backin the bucket. This compromises prod-uct quality. We have been very pleasedwith the tracked equipment set up wehave from McCloskey. It gives us theadvantages of reliability, portability and
product quality, all of which are crucialfor our success.”

During my career in mining, I havemet hundreds of people in a manage-ment role. Some were executives, somewere managers of divisions, mines orplants, some were superintendents ofoperations, maintenance, tailings, pro-curement, electrical, etc., and somewere supervisors responsible for crewsthat “did the work.” Without exception,the people in management that I ad-mired and respected were honest, evenwhen it was politically incorrect. Yearslater, I still have the highest regard forthose individuals because I recognizehow much courage it took to stand forwhat was right and “go to bat” for theirpeople when it mattered most.
This article is not about the impor-tance of being honest in the workplace.It is about the word “brutal” and itshidden impact on the bottom line, theculture and management’s credibility.
Webster’s definition of brutal reads:“extremely ruthless or cruel, crude orunfeeling in manner or speech, harshand unrelenting, disagreeably preciseor penetrating.” Many of you knowpeople like this:
• Their words often reflect anger, re-sentment, intimidation, arroganceand/or impatience;
• They hold others accountable for alevel of perfection that far exceedswhat is required to do a job;
• They believe that a brutal manage-ment style is THE ONLY WAY to moti-vate people to meet goals;
• They were similarly supervised bypast bosses who were rewarded fortheir conduct; and
• They believe that their job titlegives them the right to use this man-agement style.
Historically, companies have accept-
ed a variety of management styleswithin their management teams. Ifsomeone questioned the use of a bru-tal style, the response was often “that’sjust the way he or she is — get used toit”. Even H.R. departments said “wehave talked to that person and they re-fuse to change — there’s nothing elsewe can do.” This is especially true ifthat person was a friend of someone inmanagement.
There is rarely a connection madebetween a brutal management styleand the bottom line… or the culture…or management’s credibility. Let’s ex-amine each area where losses occur inmore detail:
• Bottom Line: Solving problems thatinterfere with production or cost de-pends on the freedom to communicatewithout judgment or retribution. Theseproblems are often worth thousandsand sometimes millions of dollars. Allof the value attached to these prob-lems hinges on the free exchange ofideas between management and theworkforce and between departments. Abrutal management style shuts downthe free exchange of ideas, stealingprofits tied to these problems.
• Culture: People under a brutalmanagement style come to work everyday knowing that they may beridiculed or criticized unfairly. Theyare depressed when they arrive on siteand can’t wait to leave at the end of theday. They feel abandoned because theybelieve that the entire managementteam approves of the way they aretreated. People with low morale rarelytry to make things better and rarelyshare an insight about an opportunityto improve production or cost. Peoplein the midst of adopting new work
practices are especially affected be-cause they make more mistakes thanusual during the transition from old tonew practices. Nothing slows changedown like overly critical commentsduring the change process — anotherconnection to the bottom line.
• Management Credability: Whenmanagement continues to tolerateand/or reward a brutal managementstyle, the entire team is affected. Therest of the team sees the lack ofcourage to address the issue. Theworkforce sees the lack of courage andwillingness to forfeit additional profitsand labels the entire team as weak. Avirtual wall forms between the manage-ment team and the workforce as mis-trust builds, a wall that is impossible totear down without consistent changesin management behaviors. Successfulchange CANNOT be achieved if thefoundation for change is filled with mis-trust, conflict and confusion.
Thought for the month: Brutalmanagement styles cost more than youthink. Setting standards that prevent abrutal style sets the stage for higherprofits, happier people and more man-agement credibility.

LANHAM, MD — TheAsphalt Pavement Al-liance has announcedthe winners of its 2011Perpetual PavementAwards program.
These nationalawards are given toroad-owning agenciesfor asphalt pavementsthat are at least 35years old and have nev-er had a structural fail-ure. The average inter-val between resurfacingof each winning pave-ment must be no lessthan 13 years, and theroad must demonstrateexcellence in design,quality in constructionand value for the travel-ing public.
Engineers at the Na-tional Center for AsphaltTechnology (NCAT) eval-uated the nominationsfor the Perpetual Pave-ment Award and a panelof industry expertsvalidated the winners.
They are:• The Alabama De-
partment of Trans-portation for an 8.5mile section of StateRoute 17 in WashingtonCounty;
• The Florida StateDepartment of Trans-portation for a 13.2mile section of StateRoute 997 in Miami-Dade County;
• The KentuckyTransportation Cabinetfor a 6.6 mile section ofHal Rogers Parkway inLeslie County;
• The Minnesota De-partment of Trans-portation for a 16.7mile section of U.S.Trunk Highway 71 inStearns and ToddCounties; and

A perpetual pavement
is constructed so thatdistress occurs in thetop layer only. The onlyrehabilitation requiredis the removal of thedistressed surface layerand resurfacing with anasphalt overlay. Usingcurrent pavement tech-nologies this can bedone on an infrequentbasis every 15 to 20years. The reclaimedmaterial is then recy-cled, making perpetualpavement the ultimatein sustainable designand construction.
One of the keys tosustainability is longlife, said Michael J.Kvach, executive direc-tor of the Asphalt Pave-ment Alliance. Asphaltroads can be engineeredto last indefinitely withonly routine mainte-nance and periodic sur-face renewal. The ad-vantages of these per-petual pavements are
significant. Life cyclecosts are lower becausedeep pavement repairsand reconstruction areavoided. User delays arereduced because minorsurface rehabilitationrequires shorter workwindows and can avoidpeak traffic hours. Andthe environment bene-
fits because minimal re-habilitation, combinedwith recycling any ma-terials that are removedfrom the pavement sur-face, reduces theamount of material re-sources over the pave-ments life.
Each of the winnerswill receive an engraved
crystal obelisk, andtheir names and thenames of the projectswill be added to a per-manent plaque that iskept at NCAT. Eightypavements have re-ceived the PerpetualPavement Award sincethe awards program be-gan in 2001.

YANKTON, SD — AKolberg-Pioneer, Inc.(KPI-JCI) representativerecently returned froma one week trade mis-sion to China withSouth Dakota GovernorDennis Daugaard andother South Dakotamanufacturers, de-signed to establish con-tacts and rapport withspecific Chinese im-porters, as well aspotentially land a mul-ti-million dollar dealwith a major Chinesecontractor.
Bruce Viau, interna-tional sales coordinatorfor heavy equipmentmanufacturer Kolberg-Pioneer, Inc. (KPI-JCI)and president of theGreat Plains Interna-tional Trade Associa-tion (GPITA), was invit-ed by the South DakotaOffice of Economic De-velopment. As part ofthe mission, Viau spenttime in Beijing, Shang-hai and Ulaanbaatar,the capitol of Mongolia.
While Viau was invit-ed both to representone of South Dakota’sleading manufacturersand because of his rolewith GPITA, he alsoused the opportunity tohelp grow KPI-JCI’ssales in Asia and con-duct dealer trainingwith the company’s in-ternational dealerships.
“There are 1.4 billionconsumers in Chinaalone,” Viau said. “All ofthose people want in-frastructure. They wanthospitals, schools,roads, telecommunica-tions — everything wehave. That’s a hugemarket for us, as wemanufacture equip-ment that helps buildinfrastructure.”
KPI-JCI was selectedas one of two compa-nies vying for a contractto build dozens of ag-gregate plants over thenext five years in Chi-na, Viau said. The yetto be named Chinesecompany purchased a
4500 VSI crushingplant as a test machine,and will make a pur-chasing decision in thenext few months.
“This is a critical timefor South Dakota to beactive in exports be-cause that is where ourgrowth is going to comefrom at this point intime,” Viau said. “Onlya small percentage ofthe world’s economy isin North America. If weare going to grow oureconomy and jobs inSouth Dakota, we haveto be able to satisfy therest of the world’s con-sumers.”
Viau, who has trav-eled extensively aroundthe world, said when hefirst traveled to Chinayears ago, it was an ex-tremely closed societynot open to trade.
“No one would speakto you and you wereushered around by gov-ernment officials,” herecalled. “Today, it’slike any open society. Ican walk on the streetsin China by myself,whereas 10 years ago Icouldn’t have donethat. Trade is done nowlike it’s done in the restof the world. China hascome forward 200 yearsin the last 15 years.”
While in the region,Viau also met with anewly authorized KPI-JCI dealership, BeijingHuaqiangruiye TradeCo., conducted trainingwith KPI-JCI and AstecMobile Screens author-ized dealer United Ma-chinery, Inc., and metwith five customers inMongolia.
Viau said the vastmarket potential inChina makes it impor-tant to continue a pres-ence, noting that saleshave grown every yearin the past decade asconstruction booms inChinese cities. Thereare more than 1.3 bil-lion people in China,and it grows annuallyby nine million people.
“Since becoming apart of the Astec Aggre-gate & Mining Group,our sales have gonefrom nothing in Chinato one of the countrieswhere we can dependon sales each year,”Viau said. “The marketis growing and we must

ST. CATHARINES, ON-TARIO — W.S. Tyler’sPro-Deck System is anew approach to maxi-mizing a screening sys-tem. The Pro-Deck ap-proach implements ananalysis and modifica-tion strategy in process-ing operations to maxi-mize screen productivityand minimize wear by se-lecting the appropriatetype of screen media ac-cording to the threephases of screening. Thisconsultative approachresults in a fully opti-mized screening processfor greater efficiency andproductivity, as well asless unscheduled main-tenance and extendedscreen life.
The Pro-Deck is notbased on a canned for-mula but rather imple-ments a customized ap-proach for each plant’sspecific needs. It com-bines W.S. Tyler’s yearsof screening expertisewith an analytical ap-proach to determine thebest mix of screen mediafor each individual oper-ation. Traditionally, pro-cessing operations tendto use the same screenmedia on each deck ofthe vibrating screen. Butafter extensive researchand years of experience,W.S. Tyler concludedthat a non-traditional ap-proach of incorporatingmore than one screenmedia serves to preventlost efficiency and un-scheduled maintenance.Additionally, the Pro-Deck system helps toeliminate commonscreening problems suchas blinding, pegging, pre-mature wear and un-scheduled downtime.
Material traveling overa screen undergoes threedifferent phases. W.S.Tyler calls these phaseslayered, basic and sharpscreening phase. Witheach phase of the screen-ing functioning different-ly, a customized screenmedia approach helpstailor the screen media toeach phase accountingfor the two most impor-tant factors in screenmedia — open area andwear life.
In addition to consider-ing the phases of screen-

This 5.5-cubic-yard wheel loaderboasts a breakout forceof 47,210-pounds, a fullturn tipping capacity of35,310-pounds and arugged design built for avariety of material han-dling applications —such as quarries,mines, road work andsite development.
PerformanceThe DL420 offers oper-
ators the ability to setupper and lower limitsfor both the lift arm andbucket stop positionsfrom inside the cab. Thisimproves cycle times indigging and loading ap-plications, while provid-ing improved control ofthe lift arm and bucketpositions.
The new automatic re-versing cooling fan can beset to run in reverse to as-
sist in keeping the coolingsystem clean. The opera-tor can select to reversethe fan via a switch, or itcan be set to automatical-ly reverse on a preset timeframe. Each time the fanreverses, it will run in re-verse for few minutes toclean the cooling system.This helps in dirty anddusty conditions to keepthe machine running atoptimal performance, us-ing less power to cool themachine. This results inlonger working hours andshorter maintenance timeto clean the coolingsystem.
For those requiring ad-ditional dumping capabil-ities, the DL420 is alsoavailable in a high liftconfiguration, extendingthe dump height 20-inch-es above the standardDL420, to 12-feet 1-inch.
As an alternative to thestandard limited slip dif-ferential, the DL420 of-fers an optional hydrauliclocking front differential.Based on ground condi-tions, the operator canchoose to lock the differ-
ential manually with afloor mounted footswitch, or allow the ma-chine to automaticallyengage the system, pro-viding increased drivingpower when one wheelspins or loses tractionand improving machineperformance when navi-gating tough terrain.
Another common op-tion for the DL420 is atorque converter lockupclutch. This enables the
machine to climb gradeseasier and faster, increas-ing productivity as muchas 20 percent in certainstockpiling applications,while also providing a fivegear transmission in-stead of the standard fourgear setup.

er that is able to perform according to today's rigor-ous standards and at the same time, cost less tooperate than most other manufacturer's similar mod-els, the G946B is certainly a grader that requiresconsideration.
Glennon was excited to say that the plant expan-sion at the Shippensburg, PA manufacturing plantand recently designated North American
Headquarters for Volvo CE, will give this facility thecapability of complete manufacture and assembly ofthe 900 series motor graders. He said that some ofthe component parts are still being manufacturedabroad then shipped to the plant for final assembly.In the future, everything will be U.S. made.

made the experience extremely informative and inter-esting to an unskilled observer like me. His patientexplanation of how systems worked and what mightbe important to a contractor who is looking for thevarious advantages that the G946B has to offer, madethe time spent at this exhibit, most rewarding.
For example, Gary began by saying that the allwheel drive feature on this grader, gives the operatormore grading power and control while performing onthe job. He said that when the grader is equippedwith the company's eight speed HTE840 transmis-sion, the Volvo high torque All Wheel Drive Systemoperates in forward gears 1-7 and reverse gears 1-4.And when equipped with Volvo's exclusive 11 speedHTE1160 transmission, it operates in forward gears1-10 and reverse gears 1-6. Additionally, it providesan additional 8500-pounds of rim pull. When finegrading is called for, the AWD system also providesthe ability to fine grade in Creep Mode using onlyhydrostatic front wheel drive, between 0-4 km/h (0 -2.5 mph), when desired.
Gary especially noted the location of the teeth onthe outside of the circle of the blade, where thisdesign feature gives the operator more torque whenturning the blade while grading. He said that the dualgear Circle Drive System uses direct acting hydraulicpower for increased turning and holding capabilityunder full load. The Circle Drive System also uses twohardened drive pinions and is protected againstimpact damage by an overload relief valve as stan-dard equipment.
“Our transmission placement is unique to theindustry,” he added. “We have engineered the enginetransmission to be beneath the cab and ahead of thearticulation hinge. This design puts the weight of thetransmission within the grader's wheelbase. This pro-vides more downward pressure on the blade forgreater productivity. It also makes servicing thetransmission easier. Other manufacturers have thetransmission behind the engine, toward the tail endof the grader. Our exclusive location provides forgreater cutting capability, increased steering controland better stability on side slopes.”
As we moved to the rear of the grader, Gary high-lighted the unique design of the grader's coolingsystem and the plenum chamber that houses the
various coolers. He said that the door mounted cool-ing fan is reversible so the system is capable of clean-ing itself of dust and debris that might accumulate inthe radiators mounted in the sides and door of theplenum.
“We do not have a stacked cooler core system likeother brands. This greatly reduces the likelihood oftrashing and overheating,” he emphasized. “There isa hydraulically powered fan mounted on the exteriorof the door that runs independently from the engine.That way, it saves on fuel and horsepower as well. It
features a temperature control monitoring systemthat monitors ambient air temperature as well asengine coolant and hydraulic system temperaturesand operates when needed.”

1700 Rinser screen and aFinesmaster 120 Bucket-wheel dewatering plant.

diesel engine that has been optimizedfor use with selective catalyst reduc-tion (SCR) and diesel exhaust fluid(DEF) to comply with iT4 emission reg-ulations. Engines with this configura-tion are optimized to reduce particu-late matter (PM) by operating at highercombustion temperatures and to re-duce nitrogen oxides (NOX) with ex-haust after treatment using SCR tech-nology. Additionally, engines usingSCR systems offer increased fuel effi-ciency ¢w as much as 16 percent onthis machine ¢w due to the engine op-timization, which allows for a morecomplete fuel burn.
The new auto idle feature providesadditional noise reduction and fuelsavings by reducing the working idle ofthe wheel loader from 950 rpm to astandby idle setting of 750 rpm whenthe machine in inactive for 10 minutes.
The 775-cubic-inch engine featuresa high pressure common rail (HPCR)design with direct fuel injection, elec-tronic control and four valves percylinder. The high pressure commonrail fuel system increases the efficiencyof fuel delivery by increasing the pres-sure up to 34,000 psi. The increasedpressure allows the injector to inject afiner mist into the engine, which re-sults in a more efficient combustionthat in turn produces more torque andimproved fuel economy, less noise,lower operating costs and cleanerexhaust.
ReliabilityService intervals on the front lift arm
pins have increased 500 percent from50 to 250 hours, reducing operatingcosts and downtime. Tilt cylinder hy-draulic hoses have been rerouted forimproved hose reliability, better hosemovement and improved visibility to theattachment.

A joystick hasbeen added to the left armrest that al-lows the operator to control the direc-tional movement without having to usethe steering wheel. SEATTLE, WA — Mudslinging isn’t the type ofactivity that normally wins accolades, butMichael Diponio has nothing but praise for theway his SENNEBOGEN 870 M material handlerhas been heaving the muck around at his cur-rent jobsite for Sound Transit in Seattle.
Sound Transit is extending the U-Link sub-way from its LRT station at Pine Street to a newstation planned at Capitol Hill. Diponio, theVice President of Michigan based Jay Dee Con-tractors, is project manager for the JayDee/Coluccio/Michels joint venture which willmine the two tunnels, each 21-feet in diameterand 3,800-feet long.
Tunneling like this is Jay Dee’s stock in tradeand the family owned business has been doingit for more than 45 years. With the U-Link proj-ect, however, Diponio faced unique challengesposed by the environmental standards ofWashington State and the City of Seattle.
The problem, in a word, is muck. Conveyorsfrom the project’s two tunnel boring ma-chines deliver their tailings in the form of aheavy slurry to the open cut for the futuresubway station. The slurry arrives about 80-feet below grade and Diponio has to move thewet muck up to road level and haul it out tohis fill site without compromising the city’sstrict standards for protecting its water tableand roadways.
Cleanup can be costly“We’re working in a very urban area here,
and our haul route travels directly through aresidential area,” Diponio explains. “The trackout is severely limited, and using thousands ofgallons of wash water every day is counter pro-ductive.” The contract includes significant cashincentives for complying with these require-ments, and a local environmental technician isstationed on the site to monitor the operation.
Officials for the city and consultants conduct awalking tour of the project every week.
The simplest approach to moving the muckwas with stacking conveyors transferring it upto a muck bin or to waiting dump trucks. How-ever, the conveyor process resulted in themuck splashing too much for crews to cleanup. “The drop from the end of the conveyor intothe dump was about 6 or 7-feet. The muck wassplattering everywhere, 30 or 40-feet. It was go-ing right up our sound wall! We had a ‘sploogepatrol’ of five guys with loaders going full timeto clean up.”
The muck wouldn’t splatter so much if it wasdrier, of course, but it then becomes too stickyto offload easily from the buckets and dumps.Foaming agents are actually added by theTunnel Boring Machine to condition the muckso that it flows freely from the excavationchamber.
Precise handling is the solution“What we needed was a method to place, not
drop, the material precisely into the dumptrucks. We looked at some other machines, butwe needed more horsepower and more mass toget the stability for a precise transfer. We wentwith the SENNEBOGEN 870 M on the recom-mendation of Modern Machinery. But really,we had no idea if it was going to work.”
The SENNEBOGEN 870 M is a purposebuilt material handler weighing 165,000-pounds and powered by a 426 hp engine. Thewheeled unit is mounted on a specially rein-forced platform raising it 30-feet above thefloor of the excavation where the muck flowsin. Modern Machinery fitted the machine witha SENNEBOGEN extra long boom to make the63-foot reach up to the waiting trucks. Its

2.5-yard clamshell bucket was also custom builtwith tight bucket closing tolerances to prevent leak-age and spilling as the clamshell bucket swingsover the truck bed.
The SENNEBOGEN is positioned down in thehole, 40-feet beneath the ground surface. Once thebucket is raised above the surface and the machineswings over the edge of the shaft, the machine op-erator loses sight of the bucket. Jay Dee’s operatorsscoop up the muck and guide it up to the road lev-el using two cameras to find their way. One camerais mounted at the boom knuckle and another is po-sitioned roadside by the trucks’ station. With a to-tal boom length of 63-feet, they have just 3-inchesof clearance to reach their targets, the dump bodiesand pup trailers. The bucket is carefully lowered di-rectly into the bed, with only inches of clearance oneither side of the bucket, before the bucket isopened to let the muck flow out.
The fleet of dump trains grew as operators be-came increasingly proficient with the 870 M andthe drivers were able to navigate into the exact po-sition with the help of markings painted on thepavement.
Picking up the paceLoading each truck requires four passes to fill the
front unit and five to fill the trailer. The system wasable to get the job done but the question onDiponio’s mind was, how much time would it take?“This method has performed well beyond our expec-tations,” he’s pleased to say. “We now have eleventrucks moving through the cycle, and the SEN-NEBOGEN more than keeps up with them.”
Diponio reports that the initial loading times ex-ceeded his target, but the operators advanced upthe learning curve very quickly. “Before we started,we spent a day or so with the operators, going overthe drawings to make sure everyone understood theconcept. The first tests came in at 20 minutes for afull load, and we were looking for 12 minutes,” herecalls. “The average now is under 10 minutes,which means we can now meet our production pro-jections!” The best loading time achieved by any op-erator so far is just six minutes.
The contractors are looking forward to earningtheir bonus for environmental compliance, too.Even at its fastest loading times, the 870 M is mov-ing with precision, enough that the worksite staysmeticulously clean. “The inspectors can tour thesite in their street shoes without a problem,” claimsDiponio. Jay Dee’s “splooge patrol” has been re-placed by a crew of two who police the site once aday with a wheelbarrow. A wheel washer systemand street sweeper take care of any spillage comingfrom the trucks’ tailgates.
According to Diponio, the controlled success ofthe “mudslinging” operation can be credited to theright choice of machine and to SENNEBOGEN’ssmooth hydraulics system. “The 870 M is a largermachine than we first considered, but Will Winter-mute at Modern Machinery recommended a heaviermachine for added stability.” The 870’s hydraulicboom, he says, gives his operators more controlover the bucket than a cable crane or excavatorwould allow.
