It's easy or young people to buy drugs Weallagreethatit’simperativetorestrictaccesstoharmfuldrugsbychildrenandothervulnerableindividuals.Drugsinschoolsisagrowingproblembecause'tinnyshops'areoftenlocatednearschoolsandtheydon'tIDcustomers.Restrictingaccesstoadultswouldmosteffectivelyreduceusebyminors.

Prohibition undermines drug education Weneedeffectiveeducationaboutdrugssothatpeople–youngpeopleespecially–canmakeresponsibleandinformedchoices.Endingtheguiltandpersecutionwould

allowmoreopenandhonestcommunication.Enorcement o prohibition is racistThoughcannabisiswidelyusedbyNewZealandersin general,enforcementofdruglawsimpactsmuchharderonMaori,whoarefivetimesmorelikelytobearrested.ReformingourdruglawswillreduceoppressionofMaori.

Prohibition erodes respect or the law  AlmosthalfofalladultNewZealandershaveusedcannabis,andveryfewabuseit.Criminalisingmorethan tenthousandpeopleeveryyearservesnolegitimatepurpose,andcausesenormousharmtotheirlives,careersandfamilies.Endingprohibitionwillhelprestore

respectforthelaw,andgivepolicebetterthingstodo.

Patients deserve sae access tomedicinal marijuanaCannabisisproventobeaneffectiveandsafemedicineformanyconditionsincludingcancer,multiplesclerosis,arthritis,HIVwastingsyndrome,glaucoma,chronicpain,paraplegia,andepilepsy.Doctorsandpatientsshoulddecidewhattreatmentisbest,notpoliticiansorpolice.

Prohibition is a waste o money NewZealandPolicehavethehighestcannabisarrestrateintheworld,andit'sveryexpensive!YetnewresearchforWHOshowspeoplearenotdeterred

bytoughlawenforcement,andcountriesthathavereformedtheirdruglawsdonothavehigherratesofuse.Legalisingandregulatingcannabiswouldbestcontrolthewaycannabisissoldandused,allowsales taxestobecollectedaswellassaveheapsofmoney.

The table below shows the outcomes of each approach.

1. MINIMISE HARM:policiesshoulddiscourageirresponsibleuse,includingusebyadolescents.Preventionismosteffective wherecannabisisviewedfromapublichealthperspective,insteadofacriminaljusticeperspective.

2. STOP ARRESTINGCANNABIS USERS: theGovernmentshouldimmediatelydeclareamoratoriumonarresting thosewhochoosetouse

cannabis.Allowmedicinaluse-letdoctorsdecide,notpoliceandpoliticians.

3. DECRIMINALISE USE:removeallpenaltiesfortheuse,possessionandgrowingofcannabisbyadultsandthenon-profittransferofsmallamounts.ThedraconiansearchpowersoftheMisuseofDrugsActshouldbe

removedandcriminalrecordsforcannabisoffenceswiped.

4. LEGAL CONTROLS:aswithalcohol,cannabisuseshouldbelimitedtoadults.Drivingwhileimpairedshouldremainprohibited,andmarketingrestricted.

5. REGULATE SALES:acommercialmarketformarijuanawillalwaysexist.Itisbettertoregulatethatmarketthanleaveittoorganisedcrime.Overseas

experienceshowscannabislawchangeshavenotbeenassociatedwithincreaseduse.

400,000NewZealanderscurrentlyusecannabis,andopinionpollsshow40%to65%supportchangestothelaw,dependingonthequestionasked. WesupporttheintroductionofDutch-stylecannabiscafes.Whatdoyou think?
