TOUR OVERVIEW Art from the French impressionists to the 20th century artists of Cornwall and gardens as diverse as Monet’s
Giverny and the tropical gardens of the unique Eden Project, you will have many opportunities to linger and
explore artistic works and places of great beauty on this tour. In addition, in each of the places you stay, there
will be visits of historical interest to round out the tour. The five years of German occupation of the Channel
Islands during WWII had a significant impact on both the Islanders’ psyche and material legacies. WWII history
will also be brought to life during the visit to Caen. In addition, you will travel through richly varied landscapes.
The wooded hills and chalk escarpments of the Seine Valley, the picturesque harbours and quaint fishing villages
along Normandy’s 350 miles of coastline and the beaches and rugged coastline on the south western most tip
of Britain. Our tour is timed for spring when gardens burst with colour. On the Channel Islands, the cliff tops are
covered with wild flowers and spring bulbs, orchids and subtropical gardens thrive in the mild island climate.
Staying put in comfortable 3-4 star hotels in four towns and visiting from this base means a more leisurely pace
with free time to get to know the area.

IS THIS TOUR FOR ME?
This tour will delight lovers of art and gardens but
there are a lot of other visits which give it a more
general appeal. There will be a moderate amount
of walking, some climbing up and down hills and
flights of stairs and along cobbled streets and
uneven terrain. This means a good degree of
fitness is required. One of the most tiring aspects of
travelling can be the 1-2 hours of standing on visits
to museums and gardens and this will also occur
on this tour. Travel will be by coach and ferry.

DAILY ITINERARY
Depart in the middle of the day for Singapore, arrive in the evening and
then transfer to your hotel for the night.
Enjoy a day's stopover in Singapore before departing late for an overnight
flight to Paris.
Arrive in Paris and meet with the coach and driver. We will travel to Giverny
and visit Monet’s house and gardens. In spring, the garden will be full of
tulips, narcissus, daffodils and pansies with bursts of colour everywhere.
Continue to Trouville-sur-Mer (near Honfleur) where we will probably feel like
a light bite to eat and an early night!
Enjoy a leisurely morning in Trouville-sur-Mer before travelling to Honfleur.
Lovers of Impressionist art will have seen many paintings of this picturesque
Norman port chosen by painters for the ever-changing light and the
backdrop of pretty wood and slate houses that surround the harbour. After
lunch visit the unique Les Jardins des Personnalités installed on the old mud
flats of the estuary, a 10 hectare landscaped area where the busts of
famous people with historical and cultural importance to Honfleur are
placed. Enjoy a welcome dinner in the hotel.
Travel to Rouen, Normandy’s cultured, historic, vibrant capital. Monet’s
canvases of the cathedral have made it the best-loved building in town but
many other glories stand out including the site of Joan of Arc’s death and
the church dedicated to her. Meet a local guide on arrival for a walking
tour of the city which includes a visit to the cathedral. The guided tour will
end at the Musée des Beaux-Arts where those who want to, can spend
some time. The Musee des Beaux-Arts dates back to the end of the 1700’s
when a public collection first started and has one of France’s finest
collection of Impressionist art along with extensive displays of drawing,
landscapes and sculptures. The afternoon will be at leisure in Rouen. Transfer
back to the hotel for dinner.
This morning we journey through the lovely Normandy countryside to Caen
and visit the Botanic Gardens. Whilst in the city, we will also visit the
Memorial de Caen. This memorial built in 1988 focuses on the Battle of
Normandy. The displays are superbly presented particularly in the room
devoted to D-Day where a large split screen follows the landing
simultaneously from the Allied and German viewpoints. There will be free
time in the town to explore and have lunch. We then continue to Bayeux to
the world-renowned Bayeux Tapestry. This tapestry gives historical
information that no other source has provided particularly about civil and
military architecture, weapons, navigation and elements of everyday life.
Return to Trouville-sur-Mer for an evening at leisure.
This morning you will have free time to explore Trouville-sur-Mer before
travelling to a local cheese maker for a tour and tasting, and a picnic lunch.
In the afternoon visit Le Havre and the Musee d’Art Moderne André Malraux,
(MuMa) housing one of the leading collections of Impressionist art. There will
be time here before returning to Trouville-sur-Mer.
Depart Trouville-sur-Mer and travel to Mont Saint-Míchel. An island abbey
which floats like a mirage just off the Norman coast. For more than a
thousand years, this has been a place of pilgrimage. We will make a visit
here (tide dependent) followed by a walking tour of the walled city and
free time to explore. Transfer to the hotel for dinner.

This morning we will travel to the dock and take the early morning ferry to
St Helier, Jersey, to begin our exploration of the Channel Islands. While St
Helier has a distinctive British atmosphere, the town retains numerous French
influences as attested by many streets that carry old French names. In June
1940, the Third Reich advanced through France and tension mounted that a
German attack on the Channel Islands was imminent. The British
Government decided that the Islands had no strategic importance and
would not be defended. Those who have read ‘The Guernsey Literary and
Potato Peel Pie Society’ or seen the recent movie will have an impression of
what life was like on the Islands during the Occupation. Today we will visit
the Jersey War Tunnels, a one kilometre tunnel network built by POWs
originally as a munition store and then converted into an underground
hospital. More than 5000 slave labourers were brought over to Jersey.
Conditions were terrible for them with disease and death becoming
common. The interactive displays in the museum tell the stories of the
Occupation.
This morning we will tour to the north of the island and visit Judith Querees
award winning garden, which contains many rare and unusual plants.
Judith and her husband bought the traditional stone house over 30 years
ago. They have gradually created a glorious garden which is featured in the
‘1001 Gardens You Must See Before You Die’. Return to St Helier via the east
of the island with lunch en route. Make a stop at Gorey, a relaxed fishing
village with pastel coloured cottages overlooked by the medieval
battlements of Mont Orgueil Castle. The remainder of the day is at leisure.
This morning we visit the Jersey Lavender Farm, a working farm where
lavender is grown and processed, the oil extracted and used to make a
range of fragrant Jersey Lavender products. The remainder of the day is at
leisure for independent exploring.
We will take the ferry across to Guernsey as foot passengers today and then
meet the coach and a local guide for a tour of the island to include the
Occupation Museum and the Guernsey Tapestry. Transfer to the hotel for
dinner.
Today we will take a full day excursion to Sark. Nestled between Guernsey
and Jersey, Sark is one of the few remaining places in the world where cars
are banned from roads and only tractors and horse-drawn vehicles are
allowed. Our tour will include a tractor train to the centre of the main town
and a carriage ride around the island stopping at La Seigneurie Gardens,
home of the Seigneurs of Sark. With its colourful borders and stone wall, this is
one of the finest gardens in the Channel Islands. After the visit, return to the
main town and then enjoy the 45 minute ferry ride back to Guernsey in the
late afternoon.
Spend a morning at leisure on Guernsey before taking the early afternoon
ferry to Poole. On arrival mid-evening, meet with the coach and driver and
transfer to the hotel for dinner.
Depart after breakfast and make a stop in Exeter with free time to explore
the city. Continue through Dartmoor to the Lost Gardens of Heligan and
learn the intriguing story of how the lost garden came to life again. Travel on
to Falmouth for the first of our four nights there.

A day of art, sculpture and theatre in St Ives with visits to the Tate Art Gallery
and the Barbara Hepworth Museum. The Tate St Ives features work by iconic
20th century artists who lived and worked in the town, including Alfred Wallis,
Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. The Gallery occupies a spectacular
site overlooking Porthmeor Beach. It is designed to show works of art in the
surroundings and the atmosphere in which they were created. The Museum
preserves the sculptor Barbara Hepworth's studio and garden much as they
were when she lived and worked there. You will have free time to explore St
Ives before returning to Falmouth via the unique Minack Theatre, Cornwall’s
world famous open-air theatre carved in a granite cliff and set in glorious
gardens. Evening at leisure.
After breakfast we make a visit to the Falmouth Art Gallery and have a free
morning in the town for exploration and lunch. In the afternoon travel to
Tregothnan, a private botanic garden and arboretum offering a diversity of
plants and trees, rare collections, sweeping vistas and peaceful secluded
groves. Here we will enjoy a guided tour followed by a traditional cream
tea. Return to Falmouth and have the remainder of the day at leisure.
Depart the hotel and visit the unique Eden Project, a dramatic global
garden housed in tropical biomes that nestle in a crater the size of 30
football pitches. More than just a huge tropical garden, Eden is a gateway
into the relationships between plants and people and gives fascinating
insight into the story of mankind's dependence on plant life. Continue onto
the impressive Lanhydrock House and Gardens, a magnificent late Victorian
country house with wooded estate. We will have time to explore before
returning to Falmouth.
Depart Cornwall and travel northwards into Wiltshire and on to Windsor
where we will visit Windsor Castle, perhaps with renewed curiosity after the
recent royal wedding. Enjoy a farewell dinner together in Windsor before
transferring to the airport hotel. Or you may decide to stay on in the UK.
Transfer to the airport for a mid-morning flight to Singapore.
After an early arrival in Singapore, relax at your hotel or explore the city
before taking our overnight flight to Auckland or Christchurch.
