Its been a wonderful, art-event filled spring. Droves of people turned out at Norman Music Festival, Medieval Fair and Mayfair, and even though school is wrapping up and summer is creeping in, but the arts dont stop.

Norman Arts Council invites you to discover the process that goes into an artists work with Norman Open Studios, Summer Breeze is about to roll in to Lions Park and its another action-packed 2nd Friday Norman Art Walk in Downtown Norman, with free concerts, exhibition openings and more for the family to enjoy both this month and throughout the break.

    BEST,

  • Sometimes the process is as beautiful and interesting as the end result. Thats the sentiment behind Norman Arts Councils Norman Open Studios, the fourth of edition takes place Fri-day, May 13 through Saturday, May 15 with an art exhibition that extends through Thursday, May 26 at MAINSITE Contemporary Art, 122 E. Main, Norman.

Open Studios will invite the public at large into the studios and workspaces of seven Nor-man artists, including Bobby Anderson, Alejandro Bagajewicz, Ethan Elgersma, Carlos Men-doza, Haley Prestifilippo and Jason and Amanda Wells.

The bulk of our programming and initiatives supporting visual artists place the finished art work out there for the public to enjoy, but thats not necessarily providing the full picture of what goes into the creative process that went into it, said Joshua Boydston, Associate Di-rector of Norman Arts Council. Norman Open Studios gives people the opportunity to see where all the blood, sweat and tears were poured in creating a piece of art that was forged in hopes of bettering the world if even in the smallest of ways. More often than not, that ex-posure to the process only grows the appreciation for an already beautiful piece of art.

The free, weekend-long event kicks off with an opening reception for the exhibition from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, May 13 at MAINSITE in conjunction with the 2nd Friday Norman Art Walk in Down-town Norman. Self-guided tours through each of the artists spaces will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 with physical maps and passport available at MAINSITE throughout the weekend. The artists will then return on Sunday to discuss their process alongside their finished works at MAINSITE from 1 to 3 p.m.

The artists selected represent a wide range of backgrounds, styles, interests and media. An-derson is a long-time artist with a focus on fiber works and weaving. Bagajewicz creates massive sculptural pieces at a previously abandoned warehouse located near I-35. Ethan Elgersma is a master wood worker who just recently setup shop as North Wind Studio in Downtown Norman with fellow sculptor Ariel Patchin. Carlos Mendoza uses an array of unusual materi-als in his whimsical mosaic creations, while recent Momentum OKC Spotlight Artist Haley Prestifilippo works primarily using graphite on paper. Jason and Amanda Wells found a new home for the Sublime Signs Studio, where Jason does graphic design, sign and banner mak-ing while Amanda paints, works in ceramics and more.

Though weve showcased many Norman artists in the previous three incarnations of Nor-man Open Studios, this year focuses entirely on artists that we havent featured before, cre-ating a brand new experience for those who have taken the tours in prior years, Boydston said. Were always working to expose and support new voices, and we hope the community will come out to discover what these hard-working artists are doing to beautify our city.

Norman Open Studios is presented by Norman Arts Council and made possible through the support of The City of Norman, Republic Bank & Trust, Fowler Auto Group, Kirkpatrick Foun-dation, Oklahoma Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts.

  • SUMMER BREEZE ANNOUNCES

    SUMMER 16 SERIES

  • The Depot is proud to announce the musical lineup for the 2016 Summer Breeze Concert Se-ries. The eight free family-friendly Sunday evening concerts, taking place in Lions Park at the corner of Flood and Symmes in Norman, are all scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm. Bring seating, your favorite refreshments (no vendors are allowed) and enjoy these relaxed easy-breezy musical evenings in the park.

May 22, The Dusty 45sThe Dusty 45s deliver their rockin, high energy music at full throttle, keeping fans on their feet and begging for more. The group melds styles ranging from country twang to jump blues and surf to R & B, even adding Dixieland and jazz elements. Infused by a passion for American roots music in all its varied forms, The Dusty 45s blur the line between genres to create a siz-zling sound that is entirely fresh and uniquely their own.

June 5, Orquesta DCalleOrquesta DCalle will have you on your feet dancing to their high energy Latin music.

June 19, WE DREAM DAWNWE DREAM DAWN began as an Elephant Revival side project and quickly grew from its small-town Midwestern/Rocky Mountain roots and blossomed into a unique, earthy blend of dreamy electric folk music. Hailing from rural Oklahoma and Kansas the band Sage Cook (guitar and vocals), Aera Fox (bass) and Weston Hill (drums) is busy representing rural America in a whole new light. After leaving Elephant Revival, Sage has taken to not just growing his own food but his own new sound, one definitely worth checking out.

June 26, Brandy ZdanAlthough Brandy Zdan calls her new, self-titled album her full-length debut, theres no mis-taking this seasoned singer-songwriter for any kind of rookie. For the better part of the last decade, the native Canadian now living in Nashville, TN has garnered acclaim as half of the gothic folk/roots duo Twilight Hotel, with two albums, 2008s Highway Prayer and 2011s When the Wolves Go Blind, nominated for prestigious Juno Awards (Canadas Grammy), as a formidable multi-instrumentalist (touring and recording with the Americana all-girl band the Trishas), and even as a solo artist (with LoneStarMusic hailing her 2013 Lone Hunter EP as a one-woman tour de force.) But according to the artist herself, all of that was merely a prelude to the aptly-titled Brandy Zdan, the most focused expression of her musical identity to date.

    COMING THIS SUMMER!

  • July 10, Kyle Reid and the Low Swingin ChariotsKyle Reid leads the Low Swinging Chariots, in a joyful revelry of original swing tunes that draw from New Orleans, Gypsy Jazz, and Western Swing traditions. Reids original tunes sound at once familiar yet new and exciting, blending elements of these classic American forms with contemporary attitude. The low sonorous quality of Reids voice is well balanced by the hot accents of the rhythm section and the sweet melodies of the brass section.

July 24, Brave ComboTrying to describe Brave Combos music requires a pretty extensive vocabulary at least when it comes to musical styles. For the past three decades the Denton, Texas based quintet has perfected a world music mix that includes salsa, meringue, rock, cumbia, conjunto, polka, zydeco, classical, cha cha, the blues and more. They are Americas Premier Dance band and a rollicking, rocking, rhythmic global journey offering what one critic recently wrote, Even if you come for the party, youll leave with something of a musical education.

Aug. 7, Hosty Duo The Hosty Duo are Mike Hosty, an outstanding guitarist and songwriter, and Michael Byars, a world-class drummer. Their setup is simple, but their individual talents make this two-piece band sound twice its size. Hosty simultaneously tears through gritty slide leads, blows har-monica and or Kazoo and uses foot pedals to stomp bass lines. And Tic Tac Byars puts it all in a rock-solid groove. Their superb style of bluesy roots rock combines with imaginative songs about nights spent in jail or dinosaurs or affairs of the heart to make one of the most entertaining shows anyone could hope to see.

Aug. 21, The Mulligan BrothersThe Mulligan Brothers met playing in bars in Mobile, Alabama and their name means second chances. Their second album, Via Portland, is being played on radio stations across the coun-try and The Mulligan Brothers are listed in the Alternate Root Magazines Top 50 of 2015--So Far. The music is still a blend of alt-country, blues, and folk that sounds like the Lumineers with a hot fiddle and the song writing of Townes Van Zandt, but Via Portland is a smoother album with more harmony and background vocals and dynamics in the instrumentation.

Summer Breeze Concerts are made possible, in part, by grants from the Oklahoma Arts Coun-cil and the Norman Arts Council, from Sponsors Skye Diers, Gingerbread Nursery School and Republic Bank and Trust; from Contributors Tom McAuliffe, Don Cies Real Estate; Dentists Jamie Belknap, Donna Sparks and Kristen Campbell at Norman Smile Center; Andi Berry, Wyoming Art Therapy; Backwoods; Edward Jones; 2 Green Chicks; The Mont; Montford Inn; and from Friends Nancy McClellan, Sooner Carpet Cleaning & Restoration, and Neighbors Bob Schlegel and Becca Hewes of Yogalife. Major in-kind support comes from Norman Parks and Recreation Department.
