Now A KEURIG K-CUP RETAILER!The first store front independent KEURIG K-CUP retailer in Simcoe!

My neighbour, John Fulton, owner of Ontario’s South Coast Bicycles and Tours Inc. left me a message a few weeks back that he had decided to collect bikes to send to Africa… I thought this could be an interesting story. John chatted with one of the organizers of Africycle, who had explained that, “Many people in Africa could not afford available forms of transportation; mini bus, taxi or least of all a private vehicle. Therefore the alternative most people turn to is a bicycle. Simple and cheap to operate, bicycles are an effective way to save significant amounts of time. By providing access to appropriate, affordable bicycles; Africycle is using the bicycle as a tool for change in Africa.”

John was sold on the idea and wants folks to drop off their old bikes to him in Port Ryerse and he will make sure the bikes get to Oshawa where they will be shipped over to Africa. John explained that the bikes shipped are fixed up in Africa to fit the needs of the terrain. As you can imagine there isn’t road infrastructure like here and the bikes take a pounding. For a lot of folks, bikes are the only means of transportation. Here are a couple of key facts about Malawi in Africa where the bikes are put to use

According to Africycle:• 80% or 11.2 million people live in rural areas

of Malawi.• 45% of rural dwellers have a bicycle in their

household.• 1% of rural households have a motorized

vehicle.• 75% of rural households live more than 10

km from markets or trading centres. I looked up the history of Africycle and found

out the following according to their website, www.africycle.org.

Experiencing the need for bicycle infrastructure in Malawi, a team of people gathered in 2005 to begin the process of making change. What developed was a pilot project (Malawi Bike Project) that delivered 180 used Canadian bicycles to Malawi via shipping container, to beneficiaries in Malawi. The results from this project were encouraging and truly impactful, compelling those involved to delve deeper into how real change could be achieved. Through a continuing learning process, Africycle was formed as a registered Canadian charity to actively engage Canadians in creating economic and social opportunities for people in Malawi.

The first Africycle shop was planted in Zomba Malawi in July of 2007. Establishing activities in Malawi on a permanent basis, this shop has been the centre of Africycle operations and our connection to the greater community. By 2009, over 2000 bicycles have been shipped to Malawi, where they continue to be reclaimed as tools for change; helping to create economic and social opportunities for people in Malawi!

As you can see this charity is doing some amazing work and I now understand why John wants to help. So give John a shout at (519) 428-3428 and he can stop by and pick up your old bike.

You know we take so much for granted. Most of

us ride our bikes for pleasure and exercise… but stop and think for a moment if it was all you had for transportation, to get your food and your water, to get school, to work, to a doctor… the one bike… your donation could do all that for a family!

By Dave ScottJohn R. Wallace was principal

at Port Dover Composite School (PDCS) when I first met him in 1980. I really didn’t know the man, but he seemed to carry himself well. Our paths would cross from time to time over the years, and my respect for him grew. He stopped in a few times when we were at North School with the Norfolk Youth & Children Association (NYCA) and I began to understand the man more. I remember him telling me the history behind North School before it was even built and how his father had helped in the building process of the school. I also knew that Mr. Wallace had done a lot of work in recent years overseas with China… setting things up so that teachers could go over to China to instruct.

I arrived at his home; we sat down for coffee and tea and began to chat. John Wallace is a man who has an array of ideas and a firm understanding of both local and global issues at hand. We talked politics, education, community development, social programs, and I’ve got to tell you, it was getting close to an hour of lively discussion before I realized I needed to get onto the topic at hand. We began to chat about Operation Eyesight Universal, an organization that John has been involved with since my high school days. What I didn’t know was the degree of John’s dedication and passion.

If you are like me and don’t know what Operation Eyesight Universal is, here is a little background and history according to their website, www.operationeyesight.com.

Operation Eyesight is an international development organization focused on the elimination of avoidable blindness. To that end we gather resources and invest them in eye care and community development programs in India and four countries in Africa, working closely with local experts. We also work to encourage

vision health and blindness prevention in the developing world, while also mobilizing support in Canada and other countries.

Global blindness is a major health issue. Among the very young, the very poor and the aged, visual impairment can lead to death. And the problem is growing. Every five seconds, one person in the world goes blind. A child goes blind every minute. Yet for three out of four of these people, blindness was completely preventable. Consider these facts:

• About 285 million people are visually impaired worldwide: 39 million are blind and 246 million have low vision.

• 80 percent of all visual impairment can be prevented, treated or cured.

• About 90 percent of the world's visually impaired people live in developing countries.

Our Story - Inspired by Dr. Ben Gullison, a Canadian physician working in Sompeta on India’s east coast, Arthur Jenkyns, a Calgary businessman, founded Operation Eyesight Universal in 1963. Jenkyns marshaled the efforts of others and raised funds for people needing eye care in India.

Operation Eyesight developed into a partnership between generous Canadians and Indian eye doctors, and later expanded its scope to include regions of Africa and south Asia, as well as donors from other countries. From the beginning, the organization emphasized capacity building and sustainability by supplying local medical professionals with the training, equipment and facilities required to help their own people.

In the early 1960s, the emphasis of all eyesight-related international NGOs was on the large backlog of cataract cases in India and other developing nations. Operation Eyesight began by funding screening camps (ad hoc diagnostic clinics), cataract surgeries and

training aimed at reducing the backlog. At this time, there were few performance measures beyond the number of cataract surgeries produced collectively by all participating hospitals and clinics.

In 1981, Operation Eyesight began to fund prevention programs, such as immunization, improved nutrition, health clinics, skills training and employment that would attack the root causes of poverty. These programs improved general health, thereby reducing the incidence of blindness in poor, marginalized communities.

By the late 1990s, research revealed that emphasis on the volume of cataract surgeries, rather than quality of surgical outcomes, had resulted in the failure of some 40 to 50 percent of cataract surgeries in India. Accordingly, cataract surgery came to be known as the second leading cause of blindness behind cataracts themselves.

As well, emphasis on cataracts had ignored other eye diseases, such as glaucoma, corneal trauma,

north shore runnersIt’s Who We Are

By Julie SwainstonMike is a husband, a father, a friend, a

mentor, a mechanic, a musician and so much more!!

Swanzey’s Automotive and Kelly’s of Simcoe have been part of the downtown business community for eight years.

For several years he and his wife, Kelly, gave the kids somewhere to spend their Friday nights by hosting a jam. They would set up a drum kit and a few amps and microphones in front of the garage. Some kids would come to sing or play to hone their skills, others came to listen and enjoy the company of their friends. They all knew that fighting, or being disrespectful to anyone would not be tolerated. Mike and Kelly gave these kids respect and they returned that respect!

Mike has been in the Hamilton hospital for just over six weeks after collapsing at his garage on Peel Street and then being airlifted to Hamilton.

During this time he has suffered four heart attacks – it has been a long process as the doctors have worked hard to keep him alive and to find the cause of these heart attacks so they could decide on the right form of treatment. They have finally been able to get him onto solid food and he is now in a regular room. They have started him on his physio/rehab treatment. This journey is far from over for Mike – he still has a long way to go, but with the help of his family and friends we are all optimistic. Through facebook Dan MacDonald has been able to keep everyone updated and in return everyone has been sending back to Mike lots of love, prayers, and good positive energy to help him along on his road to recovery! We all believe that this coupled with the wonderful doctors and nurses at both St. Joe’s and the General hospitals in Hamilton is what has gotten Mike to this point.

It is time for us to come together and show our support to a man who has done so much for this community!! He and Kelly have donated to and attended countless fundraisers over the years and are the first to offer help to anyone in need!

Scarlet Tanager

Discovering Birds in

Norfolk with George & Vic

By George Pond Over the years I have had the pleasure of

leading several one day birding trips to various hotspots in Norfolk County. The participants have generally been a mixture of both novice and knowledgeable birders. I remember one such trip. We had found a Louisiana Waterthrush, a small brownish warbler that is very handsome but to some quite nondescript. These are southern birds and this is their northern limit with a few pairs nesting in Norfolk. It is a very difficult bird to see. It was really the best bird of the day and we all had terrific views of the bird.

Later that day we found a male Scarlet Tanager sitting fairly low in a maple tree. Scarlet Tanagers are relatively common breeding birds in Norfolk. They can be found in most large woodlots, especially in the western part of the county; Backus Woods and St. Williams forest are two that come to mind. Their metallic Robin-like song can be heard drifting through the upper canopy of the trees long before the bird can be seen.

When we found that Scarlet Tanager I knew that our outing had been a huge success.

The Louisiana Waterthrush was completely forgotten by most of the group for here was one of the most stunning, even though common, of Norfolk’s birds. This brilliant red bird with jet black wings and tail is unbelievingly beautiful. It never ceases to amaze me though how difficult it is to find in the tree tops once the leaves have leafed out.

During migration Scarlet Tanagers will often forage for food low in trees and bushes and sometimes even on the ground. I remember one day at Rondeau Provincial Park Shirley and I were able to approach within a few feet of one as it hunted in the weeds less than a foot off the ground. We both got some great photos that day. Even this year when out with my favourite group from the Norfolk Field Naturalists on their annual Baillie Birdathon. We found a low Scarlet Tanager in a bush. That was a highlight and several of the group thanked me for pointing it out.

In the South American tropics there are dozens of different species of Tanagers, all incredibly beautiful, but I think none as striking as the Scarlet Tanager.

Vic Gibbons using a photograph from my friend

Robert McCaw has placed the bird close to its breeding habitat here in Norfolk. They like a large mature deciduous forest. The tanagers are usually in the upper canopy of the trees. Females by the way are green in colour and will

often confuse new birders with identification. Vic has wisely left out his signature Birch tree limbs, although I think that would work for a Bruce Peninsula setting. I like the background sky in this painting.

trachoma and others, which were going undiagnosed and untreated. By the late 1990s, a model of high quality, comprehensive, sustainable eye care was developed in India under the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVP) in Hyderabad, India.

LVP demonstrated that a reputation for quality outcomes attracted paying and non-paying patients. Fees from those who could afford the surgery covered the cost of those who could not. This model, which proved to be successful, also featured rigorous cost control and revenue generation from fees to cover annual operating (non-capital) costs. Armed with this knowledge, Operation Eyesight transitioned from a charity or aid model to a development model. As such, Operation Eyesight works

collaboratively with each of its medical partners to set objectives and develop a practical plan that will ultimately achieve quality, comprehensive, sustainable eye care services.

Today, Operation Eyesight is directly active in India and the African nations of Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia, investing in sustainable treatment, prevention and community development activities to address specific problems as well as the root causes of blindness.

Mr. Wallace explained that a local minister who was in the Rotary Club inspired him to become involved thirty-five years ago. Mr. Wallace has taken numerous trips to India over the years since then supporting Operation Eyesight as it grew. He is proud that both Rotary Clubs located in Simcoe

have continued their support over the years.

Speaking of which, Operation Eyesight turns 50 years old this year… and John pointed out to me that a $50 donation could restore someone’s sight… a miracle. Close your eyes for a moment. Just sit there. Think about how important your sight is. It is part of everything you do… and for simply $50, you could give someone the gift of sight… to start a new life…

When John speaks of the works of Operation Eyesight, his enthusiasm and passion shine through. He is committed to the cause and wants us to all make a difference.

When I started the interview, my intention was more about doing a piece on Mr. Wallace, but every time I tried to sway him to talk about himself, he would bring the focus back to Operation Eyesight, keeping it the centrepiece of our conversation.

That speaks volumes to me about the man, his character and intellect, he understands the big picture of life and living and the importance of helping others… and folks that’s really all you need to know about John… his vision!

Big SplaSh of the Week!

By Jenn ButsonPress Reporter, Haldimand-Norfolk Junior Farmers

Over this past summer, the Junior Farmers’ Association of Ontario hosted six international exchange delegates, one from Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

Each county had the pleasure of hosting the delegates on average for a week doing various activities in their part of Ontario. When they came to Haldimand and Norfolk Counties, we took them on various farm tours including dairy farms, tobacco farms, apple orchards and even on a tour of Armstrong Milling. We also dedicated a day of activity to show off Niagara Falls, which undoubtedly became a highlight of their trip.

As a club we experienced great conversation with them about their homeland and how different we all live. They also shared their enthusiasm for Schneider’s corn and Tim Hortons coffee. It was an amazing experience for everyone involved.

In the upcoming months Haldimand-Norfolk Junior Farmers are making an appearance at the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show as usual, selling our back bacon on a bun. As a club we plan to attend ‘Autumn Profile” where we hope to win some farmers’ Olympics and ‘Sing Swing’ where we show off our more artistic

abilities. We will also be hosting a New Years’ Eve party at Jarvis Community Centre to raise funds for our local heroes in Haldimand; Haldimand County Emergency

Medical Services (EMS), and fire fighters. If you are interested in attaining tickets please contact one of the following: Jenn Butson (289) 775-6448; Jessica Burgess (226)

922-1951; Nick Bartlett (905) 961-3300; or any Haldimand-Norfolk Junior Farmer member.

So mark your calendars and come out to join the fun!

By MARG WERDENLooking for the wildlife in Jasper National Park

On my way home from my month-long trek across the country, I spent a day in Jasper National Park in Alberta. Although the day started out on the chilly side with a temperature of -2℃ greeting me as I crawled out of my tent, it soon warmed up considerably and turned into a beautiful day to spend in the mountains.

Jasper National Park was first established as Jasper Forest Park in 1907 with a protected area of about 13,000 square kilometres. When the National Parks Act was passed in 1930, the area became a national park with a final area of just over 10,000 square kilometres. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprised of 11,228 square kilometres that include broad valleys, rugged mountains, glaciers, forests, alpine meadows and wide rivers.

Contrary to what some may believe, the park was not named after the cartoon bear, Jasper, created by James Simpkins, which appeared in Maclean’s magazine for over 20 years from the 1940s to 1960s. The park was named after Jasper Hawes, who operated a trading post in the region for the North West Company. However, the cartoon bear was adopted as the official mascot for the park in 1962 and a statue stood for many years at the train station. Unfortunately, vandals damaged the statue in 2004 after 40 years of being a

local landmark. The statue was replaced, however, and moved to a more secure location.

My first stop in Jasper was, of course, at the Bear’s Paw bakery – not a spot to be missed on any visit! Then I wandered around the town and marvelled at the amount of train activity going on at the Jasper Heritage Train Station, built in 1925. Coming from Norfolk County, where trains are hard to find, watching all this activity in such a small community on the CNR’s mainline is quite fascinating. When I had arrived the evening before, Jasper had been teeming with tourists, which I found a little surprising at first, but soon realized that the Rocky Mountaineer train had stopped in town and tourists were strolling, shopping, eating, and generally enjoying the amenities of the town. By the next morning, the train had once again departed and the town was much quieter.

Across the street from the train station is the Jasper National Park Information Centre, a building completed in 1914. The construction of this building, which originally housed the park administration offices, a museum and the living quarters for the park superintendent, introduced the tradition of using local construction materials, in this case cobblestone and timber. It’s a beautiful rustic-looking building that is a landmark in the park.

I knew this was to be my last day in the mountains and that, if I was to see a mountain goat (other than the little white speck I had seen high up on Mount Robson), this was going to be my last chance. So I headed out of town to look for some wildlife. After viewing a number of scenic spots in the park including Pyramid Lake

and Mountain, the Sunwapta and Athabaska Falls, and Mount Edith Cavell and the glacier flowing down from it, I had to admit defeat and head east toward Edmonton where I had promised to arrive in time for dinner at my brother’s home. What a disappointment!

And then just a couple of kilometres east of Jasper, lo and behold, an elk jam (a traffic jam caused by a herd of elk)! By the time I had slowed down and pulled over, it had also turned into a bear jam. The highway is situated beside the Athabaska River, elevated somewhat on the side of the valley, allowing for a wide view of the river and valley bottom. As I watched the bear, which was on the opposite bank of the river, I assumed that even if I was at the level of the river, I would have no fear of the bear as the river is quite wide and swift flowing. What a surprise then to watch as the bear walked to the edge of the river and without hesitation stepped in and swam across. And what powerful swimmers bears must be; it was barely swept downriver by the current and emerged on the other bank just minutes later.

As I continued my drive, it was only a short distance later that I came across another traffic jam, this time caused by two mountain goats. Also known as Rocky Mountain goats because they are only found in North America, this species is a member of the goat-antelope family that also includes sheep and muskox. Both sexes have beards (longer in males than females), short tails, and long black horns that contain yearly growth rings. Their woolly, white double coats (a fine, dense undercoat and an outer layer of longer, hollow hairs) protect them from the harsh

winter weather in the mountains. In the spring, the goats shed this extra protection by rubbing against rocks and trees.

Like the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep I described a few weeks ago, these animals are agile climbers. Their feet are well suited for climbing steep slopes with pitches of more than 60 degrees. Inner pads that provide traction, cloven hooves that can spread apart, and sharp dewclaws on the tips of their feet all help to keep them from slipping.

Mountain goats are alpine and sub-alpine animals, often living at elevations of more than 4,000 metres (13,000 feet). They usually stay above the tree line where they eat grasses, herbs, sedges, ferns, mosses, lichens, and twigs and leaves from the low-growing shrubs and conifers of their high-altitude habitat. However, they will migrate to lower elevations occasionally to find mineral licks to obtain essential nutrients such as sodium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and zinc required in the springtime for bone, muscle and other growth.

As I left the mountains behind and headed back across the prairies, I reset me goal: I wanted to see a pronghorn, an endangered prairie species.
