Golf Tournament Recap The Boy Scout Golf Classic took place July 16 at Thunder Hills Country Club. Thirty-one foursomes came out to enjoy a hot breezy day on the course. Portzen Construction and Steele Capital Man-
agement both shot 13 under to tie for 1st place. After the scorecard playoff Portzen Construction took first place followed by Steele Capital Management and in 3rd place was Cottingham & Butler. All three teams were generous in donating the prize money back to the Boy Scouts. Special thanks to the golf committee, which meets monthly, for producing such a suc-cessful outing. Thank you Mike Portzen, Jim Edwards, Randy Sirk, Tom Flynn, Michele Malone, Bob Peacock and Wally Brown. The Council would like to thank all the four-somes and business’ that participated and helped by providing donations. The 2012 Golf Outing was a huge success!

The Northeast Iowa Council received a grant from the Dubuque Racing Association to pur-chase a new maintenance/rescue vehicle for Camp C.S. Klaus. The next time you are out at Camp Klaus, be sure to be on the lookout for this beautiful new vehicle. The John Deere Gator 625i will be a huge benefit to summer camp staff and the prop-erties committee over the next several years. The Northeast Iowa Council appreciates all that the Dubuque Racing Association has done for our organization. We are all truly blessed to have the Dubuque Racing Association as part of our community.

The Northeast Iowa Council is in great shape and we are very proud
of our volunteers and staff that make this Council so special and
successful. In May, Scott attended the National Meeting in Orlando
and our Council was recognized for being a Journey to Excellence
improved Council, Gold Council, “Main Thing” Council, and received a
Risk Management Award. Scott was also asked to present to a group
of 150+ members on how our Council has attained and achieved such
high marks in all categories of the Journey to Excellence. The
presentation was simple — we are doing so well because of the
strong and deep rooted volunteers of the Council like you! The
Council is 40% ahead of where we were last year in our Journey to
Excellence ratings, which keeps us in the top 10 of all Boy Scout Councils.
We have achieved our Friends of Scouting pledge goal of $115,000 and continue to exceed the goal every
day. Membership is in great shape. On June 30th, the Council showed a 1.5% traditional gain and 4.6%
total membership gain! These gains have put us in great positioning for fall recruitment efforts.
Camp had a great year with the leadership of Camp Director Scott Kilgore. Aaron Seier and Mike Lambert
did a great job at making our camp look better than ever. We had over 441 campers signed up for our four
weeks of summer camp. Our Cub Camping program is on the rise as well. We obtained funding for a new
program trailer to take our program on the road to various communities, giving our Cubs a dynamic and well
run program experience. Our Resident, Overnight, and Webelos camps went over very well with our Scouts
and Leaders. We had over 210 Scouts attend Webelos Camp in June. We have heard nothing but great
things coming from our camping program which is so important, because that is why you do what you do in
Scouting. We need and will continue to keep the “outing” in Scouting.
On July 26 we will begin to chart our Council’s course for the next several years by beginning our strategic
planning session with the help of the National Council, BSA. We will be sure to keep you up to speed on our
planning process. We hope you enjoy the rest of your summer, and remember to keep the “outing” in
Scouting!

Home improvement retailer Lowe's has teamed with the Boy Scouts of America to provide the Lowe's National Eagle Scout Project Impact grant for candidates working on their Eagle Scout project. About the Grant A generous contribution from the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation has made it possible for local councils to present selected Eagle Scout candidates with a $100 prepaid gift card to be used toward their service projects. Life Scouts who are planning a construction-based project may apply. Local councils will be notified of their allotment of awards, which will be figured based on a percentage of each council's three-year average for Eagle Scout Awards earned. The council or district Eagle project review board will determine which projects qualify for a Lowe's grant. The local council will distribute its allotment of the $100 prepaid gift cards to recipients. Cards must be used to purchase building materials and equipment for the Eagle candidate's service project. The gift card may be used at any Lowe's location or any place that it is accepted. Qualifications To qualify for a Lowe's National Eagle Scout Project Impact grant, the individual must
Be a registered Life Scout.
Complete and submit to your local council the Lowe's grant application .
Be sure the Eagle Scout service project has all
approvals before the work begins.
Use the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook to document the results of the service project. Make photographs and all documentation available to the BSA for sharing with Lowe's.
Things You Should Know
If you plan to spend your gift card at a Lowe's
location, you should consider speaking with the local store manager when you arrive. This will help Lowe's track how well the program is being received.
Document your project with "before" and "after"
photographs. Be sure photographs show how the materials and equipment purchased with the gift card were used for your service project.

We have come to a crossroads in our mighty Lodge. The Northeast Iowa Council would like to recognize Wayne Decker for all of his leadership to the Lodge over the last two years. Wayne has been a big part in shaping our youth into future leaders. We will formally recognize Wayne for his tireless efforts as our Lodge Advisor at our Fall Fellowship.
Steve, our new Lodge Advisor, is Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 86. He is an OA Vigil Honor Member, past Lodge Service Advisor, 1995 NOAC Contingent Leader for Timmeu Lodge, Scoutmaster of Troop 86, Assistant Scoutmaster of the Jamboree Troop in 1997, Camp Properties Committee Member, staff member for 2001 Jamboree, Woodbadge trained plus staff member for 3 courses, and most recently past Cope Climbing Committee Chair. Ruth has served as Scoutmaster of Troop 86, presently serving as Advancement Chairman. She is an OA Vigil Honor member, past OA Committee Advisor, District Camping Committee Chairman, Woodbadge trained plus staff member for 3 courses, co-chaired numerous district committees and worked camp staff, most known for her service in the kitchen at Camp Klaus during OA weekends and at summer camp. Steve and Ruth have been married for 38 years; have two sons, Joe and Jayme (married to Michelle) with three wonderful grand-daughters. Steve and Ruth have worked side by side in life, and in there Scouting tenure. They look forward to the upcoming days of life in order to encourage youth to make a difference in the Scouting program in the Northeast Iowa Council. The Council would like to thank Dave for his valiant efforts as staff advisor to the Lodge. Dave will also be recognized at Fall Fellowship for his leadership to the Lodge.

Day Camps on the Move!
Pictured above is a limited edition framed patch set featuring John Deere Dubuque Works machinery. The framed set is very limited, so get this collectors edition while they are still available. The cost of the framed set is $100.00.
With one Day Camp completed in Dubuque, two remain! On July 28th the Cub Trailer will roll into Bloody Run County Park near McGregor and August 4th at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Manchester.
Please remember to have your Scouts bring a sack lunch with non-perishable food and clothes that are able to get wet and possibly covered in shaving cream. Scouts will be participating in a number of activities such as bb guns, sling shots, archery, crafts, rocket launches, and several other games and activities. Registration will begin at 8:15 . Activities will begin promptly at 9:00 and will end at 2:45. We have a great volunteer staff but we can always use more hands! 2013 SUMMER CAMP SIGN UP
Thank you to all who attended Camp C.S. Klaus this summer as a guest or with your Troop. We had a fantastic camp season. We want to thank Scott Kilgore and his staff for putting on such a great camp season! We hope to see you in 2013. On August 1 the Scout Service Center will start taking summer camp reservations for 2013. Units may reserve their spot using the reservation form, which can be found online or at the council service
center. A $180 deposit is required, which secures your reservation for a specific week. It will be applied towards your troop's first 2 adult leaders. Requests for specific campsites may be made at the time the camp deposit is paid. Every effort will be made to keep your troop in the campsite that you request, however, the camp program committee and camp director reserves the right to change your campsite for any reason. The deposit is not refundable or transferable if the troop fails to attend camp.

Who? Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Parents.
What? Scouts will have the opportunity to achieve the Presidential and National Physical Fit-ness awards. They will compete against their peers in the Long Jump, Standing Long Jump, Distance Run, Push-Ups, Sit-Ups, Football Throw, and several other events. In addition, Scouts may participate in the PALA challenge and turn in their activity logs to receive an award. This information will be further discussed at Roundtable. While their Scouts are busy, PARENTS will be able to receive a historical walking tour of Camp C.S. Klaus given by one of our many distinguished volunteers. This is the parents oppor-tunity to either learn more about a camp they already are familiar with or introduce the camp to those Cub parents who will be sending their son to Boy Scout Summer Camp in the coming years.

The District Committee is looking for some more individuals to help us carry out our tasks this fall. Do you like planning events? Are you into accounting? Would you like to teach outdoor skills? If you answered yes to any of these questions… we have a spot on the committee for you! Check

At these meetings we discuss and plan the needs and events of the district. If you’d like to make a huge impact on every Scout in this district, then this is the group for you! No great Scouting knowledge or experience needed. The Number One Thing Fall is coming fast and that means we’ll be getting a little break from the summer heat! It’s also membership time!! The first day of school is our signal for the membership campaign to officially begin. If you are a pack or den Leader, now is the time to fill your pack and den with new Cub Scouts. Did you know that 91% of all Boy Scouts were Cub Scouts? Troop Leaders, this means that you not only should be concerned with recruiting new Scouts into your troop, but helping the pack which feeds you their Webelos too! If you are a parent or grandparent, encourage all your boys to join, and don’t let them join alone… get them to join with a buddy! Feel free to join your sons and grandsons in all the fun. I know your local pack or troop would love to have an extra set of hands. Membership is not just an important part of Scouting, it’s “the number one thing.” Remember the words of Sir Robert Baden Powell, “The spirit is there in every boy; it has to be discovered and brought to light.”
A special thank you to all the family and organizations that helped the Dubuque District reach its Friends of Scouting goal this year. With your support we raised $49,387 this year. These much needed funds help provide a fun and valued based program enriching the lives of nearly one third of all boys who live in the area of the Dubuque District. Thank you!

Kennedy Mall Fashion Advisor
Board Exploring program
The Fashion Advisor Board Exploring program concluded its 2011-2012 program. Explorers learned about marketing, fashion and design, buying, and hosting public events. Explorers helped in the Fall when Twilight Saga star “Bella Swan” Kristen Stewart appeared at the Kennedy Mall. The program also awarded a $500 F.A.B Scholarship from Kennedy Mall to Explorer Denna Boling.
Michele Malone will chair the Learning for Life and Exploring District starting in August 2012. Michele is a familiar face with Learning for Life & Exploring. She has served with Post 2101, Finley Hospital’s Health Career Post, for many years. Michele began serving on the Learning for Life & Exploring Committee as Marketing and Finance Chair back in 2008. She has helped with the Boy Scout Golf Classic and helped start new Exploring posts. Michele is Director for the Kehl Diabetes & Babka Wellness Center.

She helped grow membership in Exploring and Learning for Life programs and helped with grants and donations. Joey will continue to help and serve on the Boy Scout Golf Committee and as a den leader for her son Jaden.

On Saturday, June 9th, 29 Scouts and Scouters from the Dellaykee District participated in a community service event at Effigy Mounds National Monument. Scouts, comprised of boys and leaders from Troops 32, 47, 53, 62, and 64, cleaned 10 miles of hiking trails and accumulated 290 hours of community service for the National Park Service. Thanks to Bruce Landis and Tom Sinclair for getting this rolling for our District and to all the young men who helped with this event!

Every Unit should try to have at least 1, hopefully 2, representatives at the August 7th Roundtable!
The new Scouting year will begin in August. With that, there will be a lot of information given out and mentioned at the August Roundtable. We will go through our entire upcoming year of Scouting and talk about the programs we’re offering and discuss changes to those programs. For Cub Scout leaders, we will talk about the upcoming recruitment season and how to make things run smoothly. If you have any new leadership, this is a great roundtable to attend! As usual, August Roundtable will be held on Tuesday, August 7th, at Peace Church in Elkader; doors open at 7:00 with the meeting beginning promptly at 7:30 and ending at 8:30. Please make an effort for your Unit to be represented at this meeting. Our District is doing extremely well and can only continue to do so with trained leaders and dedicated volunteers!

EAGLE SCOUTS MAKE A
DIFFERENCE
This is a excerpt from Wilson Schmidt’s Eagle Project that he completed in June. He built 10 Wood Duck houses and 10 Mallard Duck nests in the wet land habitat at Green Island, IA:
“When I originally made the decision to build duck nesting houses it was because I wanted to give back to my passion, duck hunting, but I had no idea what the project would mean to the DNR at Green Island. When I first met with them to discuss the project and get their approval they told me that their funding had been cut by 65% and that the current nesting houses were rotting and some were flooded out, but because of the lack of funds they would not be replaced. They quickly approved my project. Now I felt I was giv-ing back with an even bigger purpose.”
2012 is the 100th Anniversary of the Eagle Scout Badge.
