WE WANT TO DESIGN FOR THE PEOPLE


The way to Nordic designScandinavians have always had a special relationship

with light because it varies so much depending on the season. There are only 6-7 hours of daylight in

wintertime and this calls for a unique relationship with light, and an exceptional need for artificial light. For half

of the year most people live primarily indoors, which is why lighting is an important part of interior design.

This means that lighting’s significance goes far beyond functionality, and there is a strong emphasis on design and the experience of lighting. Denmark and the whole

Nordic region therefore has great traditions in lighting design. Not surprisingly, Nordic designers are among

the world leaders in this field.

Design For The People (DFTP)DFTP is for all who appreciate classic as well as

innovative lighting design. At Nordlux we are guided by our vision to create design products at a price

that everyone can afford. Design with a Nordic twist, intended for people worldwide. Therefore we invest in

the form and functionality of each and every design we produce, just as we think about people and the

environment in connection with each and every solution.

AMBIENCE AND SEISMONAUTS


Seismonaut is a Danish company that helps businesses and organizations

navigate in the digital landscape. However, for navigation indoors, at Seismonaut’s

office they rely on a complete lighting solution from Nordlux. A solution created by the architectural and

design firm Bønnelycke mdd.

The interior lighting design of a complete company office is a complex task.

Creating the best lighting conditions for a maximum number of people requires an understanding of architecture and room geometry as well as of corporate culture and internal work processes. Similarly, it

requires an in-depth knowledge of light and shadows, and, not in the least, of their interaction. Then, when the architect

is looking for the optimal lighting solution, know-how is of course essential,

in terms of both the lamps’ design and their functionality.

ALBA, FUSE, MIB, NEXUS and ORBIT wer e selected to pr ovide Seismonaut with a well designed and implemented lighting solution. ALBA ceiling lamp is suitable for both indirect and direct lighting, and was chosen for the work desks. MIB was mounted on rails or on the walls in order not to take up space on desks, and ORBIT were mounted in a line on the ceiling to elegantly provide comfortable and efficient lighting.

In the meeting room NEXUS pendants were placed in a cluster over the conference table, which emphasizes the sense of community in the room and creates a feel-good atmosphere - and equally importantly: lighting that

makes it possible to use a projector and a screen in the room.

FUSE was locked out on the terrace where its familiar glow creates a cozy and warm atmosphere, as soon as twilight starts seeping in.

Much has happened since Edison invented the incandescent bulp in 1879. An almost completely vacuumed bulb with a carbonized bamboo filament that attracted enormous attention.

Today, 135 years later, the LED bulb is on everyone’s lips. It has light-emitting diodes and has no filament that can break.

Bright, warm and nice are three words that describe the bathroom - your home’s new living space. This is where we start and end the day, but it is also the place we love to come to when when we want to take care of our well-being.

The bathroom is also a symbol of relaxation, refresh-ment and renewal. Here we take a hot bath or a cold shower to comple-ment good hygiene with new energy; this is where we lure morning sleep-iness away and where we prepare ourselves for a good night’s sleep. All this requires suitable lighting. In other words, it is important to have a proper lighting in the bathroom.

Downlights are a good solution for general lighting. For mirror lighting you should choose a solution with diffuse light. Directional creates shadows on the face, and is therefore not optimal. In the bathroom you need bright light when you do your makeup or shave, and it is a good idea to have several light sources that can even out the shadows. Wall lights on the side of the mirror is a good solution, so that light is cast on both sides of you.

A QUESTION OF GOOD DESIGNWhen we see a good design, we are attracted by its form and function. The same way we are attracted by people - by their beauty, expression and personality. Design is continuously shaped by culture, the spirit of the time and the available technology. But what is the recipe for appealing design? How does an idea for a new Nordlux DFTP design first appear and what does the process from idea to a finished product look like?

The ideas for new Nordlux DFTP designs rarely come out of the blue. Our product development is done by a skilled team that keep their finger on the pulse of design, and therefore formulate the needs and requirements for product design before the designers start doing their job. This optimizes the process and increases the chances for a potential design idea to become a popular design lamp. For everyone to enjoy. Such a process is always associated with stage fright, because although we have done our job, we are always excited to see the reactions when a new lamp is born.

At Nordlux we work with a number of independent designers, for whom design is a broad concept. All of them have a good idea of current trends and the Nordic style, which Nordlux design is known for. And all of them are aware that our design must appeal to a broad audience. This is important when new designs and product lines are to be developed. Such development processes are always ongoing, and involve several designers who think, draw and create designs so that in the end they can present their views on the lighting design of the future - from pendants to floor, table and wall lamps.

It is exactly the process of creating the finished product that is a major part of the design process. Although the form and function determine whether a given lamp design will be appealing, the design idea as well as the process leading to the finished product are also essential for the design’s potential. During this process a lot can happen, many surprises lurk around the corner and many changes can be made. Materials may turn out to be unsuitable, unattainable, too expensive or not live up to quality requirements. However, when a new lamp is sitting on the shops’ shelves, the design process is complete. Yet another Design For The People is available to the people. Hopefully it is a design and a lamp that many people will find attractive and turn on.

HAPPY GIRLSMAKE THE W O R L D -TURN TURN ON FUNK. TURN ON THE LIGHT. TURN ON HOPE.Every now and then we all have doubts whether our work benefits anything or anybody on a large scale. Enable For Life gives us the answer: IT HELPS! Read the story of a lamp that brings hope to disadvantaged girls in India.


IT WAS ERNST MICHAELSEN,who back in 2006, got the idea for Enable For Life and a village for children in India that would help the futur e development of disad -vantaged Indian girls. Nordlux Director Peter Terkelsen got the idea to allocate € 0.50 for each sold FUNK lamp as charity for the girls’ orphanage in Trankebar. This has meant a lot for Enable For Life, which is an independent, sponsor -funded aid agency with about 450 members fr om 7 dif ferent countries. And most importantly , it has given hope, joy and opportunities for the 70 girls who now live in the village. And more are on the way.

“Like all charities, we rely on donations, says Enable For Life found-er and chairman Ernst Michaelsen. We are different, however, in one important area - 100 % of the amount we receive as donations goes to the children. The administrative costs are covered in other ways, including through voluntary work.”

Ernst Michaelsen also tells us that in India girls ar e abandoned ten times mor e often than boys. The r eason for this is that the par ents must pay a high dowry when the girls get married. Besides, the sons are those who take care of the parents when their old age requires it. Girls ar e also extr emely vulnerable. When they end up on the str eet, they ar e often kidnapped for prostitution.

“Experience shows that when you educate a man, you educate one person. When you educate a woman, you educate a whole family, says Ernst Michaelsen and emphasizes that education of women is also the most ef fective form of birth control. Our goal is to pr ovide the girls with education and thus give them a future where they will be able to take care of themselves.”

The organization is planning the construction of 10 houses, each designed for 7 girls and a foster mother. The first six have already been built, and the girls have alr eady moved in. Twelve girls live in each house. For Indian standards the houses are spacious and equipped with kitchens and bathrooms. Here the girls live, as much as possible, as a normal Indian family. The girls’ day usually starts at 5:30 am and does not end until night falls. It is a long day of school and other duties but the girls also have time to play.


WELL-BEING AND JOYOne sees the development potential upon entering the Enable village and while walking along the exotic lane between the banana trees that sprawl from the property’s edges right up to the group of pink-painted houses. An impr essive gr ove that cr eates both shade and a unique atmospher e in the spacious yar d. The lush vegetation in the 100,000 square meters of land is due to the large amounts of rain during the wet season combined with high average temperatur es. But it is not only the vegetation that thrives in the village. There is a lot of life and activity under the trees. The girls’ joy is obvious, they thrive, learn and evolve, so that they can create their own futur e. This is the whole purpose of Enable For Life.
