1. INTRODUCTION:

First and foremost I would like to thank Allah SWT the most merciful and with his

guidance and love I finally able to complete the assignment for English For Written

Communication of my second semester course. Alhamdulillah, and also with the patiently

guide and useful notes by my lecturer Sir Ramlee Wahab I manage to get the inspirations

on how to start the essays. Nowadays we don’t have that much trouble to gather the

informations of the topics that we can relate to our writing as we can easily access them

from the internet and many other resources.

Though I, and my friends also, we are not only students but teachers have things to

do at school and at home (normally the women). We managed to gather our strength, time

and effort to fulfilled the schedule of a “superwoman” and hopefully able to get through till

the end of the studies.

This semester we were assigned to write 5 essays out of 7 essays given about the

environmental issues such as pollutions, vehicles theft, neighbourhood safety issues,

nursery and day care, plagiarism, the need for bicycles lane, goods and servise tax and steps

to get a driving license. Each essay should be approximately 500 words not including the

references. Last but not least, thanks to all, understanding hubby, children and friends, for

the corporations and supports given.

The first thought that one concern when he or she bought a new car was about the security

of the vehicles. Where to park during working hours, is it safe? How to make sure of the security

of the vehicles when parking it at home? So on and so forth. This is because of the rise in cars theft

cases reported in Malaysia which is rapidly increasing since 1980s . Based from the report

gathered through the mass media such as newspapers, police reports, internets and etc., a

statement given by ACP Amar Singh Sidhu showed that motor vehicles theft is high and rising.

The above graph shows the relationship between the motor vehicles theft such as private cars,

motorcycles and other vehicles in Malaysia from 1980s to 2010.

In the year 1980 the graph showed that the report of private cars theft was climbed slowly

from approximately 10,000 cases to approximately 26,000 cases in 2001, within 11 years it

increase up to approximately 16,000 cases this is really a serious matter to be ponder upon. But in

2003 it slightly dropped from approximately 30,000 cases to approximately 19,000 cases in 2007.

Then suddenly, within a year it shot up to approximately 30,000 cases.

Meanwhile, if we observed the motorcycles theft cases, the graph showed that the trend

rapidly increased from approximately 10,000 cases reported in 1990 to approximately 135,000

cases were reported in 2006, this phenomenon is really a nightmare. But the graph was gradually

dropped to approximately 110,000 cases till now.

The trend of others vehicles theft cases however showed that in year 1980 it climbed slowly

from approximately 19,000 cases to approximately 22,000 cases in 1986. But in 1987 to 1990 the

trend slightly dropped back to approximately 19,000 theft cases. However, the trend leapt

dramatically from approximately 30,000 cases in 1996 to approximately 77,000 cases in 2001.

Then a few years later the proportion of vehicles theft showed another dramatical increscent of

trend approximately from 80,000 cases in 2003 to approximately 155,000 cases in 2006. Didn’t

this numbers worried you? But surprisingly, in 2007 the graph seems to declined sharply from

approximately 170,000 cases to approximately 140,000 theft cases reported in 2010 and till now.

From the vehicles theft drastic phenomenon, we can gather that not only the authorities

department had to put efforts in vehicles safety precautions such as placing CCTVs at every nook

and corner of the parking lots whether in the buildings but also open vehicles parking lots, electric

alarms and also human or dogs security guards but the most important parts is the individual

himself or herself had to put great efforts to prevent their vehicles from being theft by equip their

vehicles with electric sensor alarms, sterring or handle locked, and make sure that they parked their

vehicles at a not highly risk area but instead at a safe and secure guarded place. (approx.480 words)

Each one of us dreamt of living in heaven or paradise, no matter what believed they might

be, Muslim, Christian, Hindu or even Buddhist. Because in heaven or paradise there will be

absolutely no pollutions. And when we talked about pollutions, it is really a plague in our society

and left behind negatives effects to individual and global itself. Dear neighbours, are we not a

concern societies? Do we agree that there will be an industrial factory build up in our

neighbourhood? Aren’t we had enough of the pollutions causes by the vehicles and environments

around us? Let me lead you and open up your mind on dreadful cases that had happened due to the

factories harm.

The pollutions causes by industrial factories had caused lots of environmental hazardous

and this had been proved in other country such as the case of massive nuclear explosion in

Chernobyl, Ukraine in 1986. 134 workers died of severely exposed radiation syndrome, large areas

of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia were affected and they had to evacuate 336,000 people to a safer

place to live in because a plume of radioactive had fall out into the atmosphere. Do we want this

incident to happen in our place?

Picture 1: Ukraine marks 25th anniversary of Chernobyl disaster.

In America, about more than 365,000 manufacturing factories consume vast quantities of

fresh water to carry away their wastes to lakes, oceans and streams which eventually polluted for

elementary uses such as swimming, fishing and drinking. Didn’t this issues open up our eyes?

Picture 2,3 and 4 showed the air and water pollution caused by the industrial wastes.

Another case that we can ponder upon was in Bristol Bay, North America, one of the

largest and richest salmon fisheries in the world will be affected if they did not stop the pebble

mine activities because it’s a threatful activities that would polluted the streams around and also

the wetlands nearby.(Bristol Bay in the News June 12, 2012 by Shoren Brown)

They cannot turn back the time to repent or to rebuild their land because of what had been

done cannot be undone but we can prevent this hazardous matters from happen to our society if we

put ourselves together and sit together to think on how to take proper actions to stop the JKZ South

Textile Company from building a textile factory near our neighbourhood as we know the textiles

wastes will cause our air and water polluted. This will effect our children growth henceforth.

It is extremely important to increase our awareness on the destruction activities made by the

factories to the nature. The scaring fact is that though we had the informations, we seem to have

very ignorant attitude and to believe that the input will not make a significant difference. What I

am talking about here is, however, to draw our attention on how our children and our grandsons

and granddaughters will breathe and how they will share scarce resources, such as clean water and

fertile land. If we do not see the problem yet, it doesn’t mean that it is not here. So brothers and

sisters, let’s put our hands together in stopping the JKZ South Textile Company from setting up a

deadly poison factory in our neighbourhood. (571 words)

QUESTION 3

PLAGIARISM HAS BECOME AN ISSUE OF GROWING CONCERN ACROSS

UNIVERSITIES IN MALAYSIA AND INTERNATIONALLY.

Page 12: noraini-writing assignment.doc

OUMH1203SMP ENGLISH FOR WRITTEN COMMUNICATION NORAINI BT IBRAHIM 681016016426

5. PLAGIARISM.

When we were young we use to warn our friends, “Don’t copycat hah!”, “Do your own

work laa!”, “Why do you like to ‘tiru’ my homework?” and blaa blaa…Nobody likes their work

being copied. But today the activities are known as plagiarism mostly in this cyber world.

Plagiarism, the simplest meaning to understand is “copy”, copying others work or ideas and

declare it to be your own ideas.

The definition of plagiarism by Oxford University is, “the practice of taking someone

else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own”. Meanwhile the definition by the

Cambridge University is “to use another person’s idea or part of their work and pretend that it is

your own”.

According to Naomi Rockler Gladen’s writing ( An Instructional Designer and Freelance

Writer), tittled A Definition of Plagiarism – College Students : Practice Academic Integrity

and Avoid Cheating, December 8 2006, that plagiarism is “the act of taking credit for someone

else’s work”.

Picture 1: Naomi Rockler Gladen – Instructional Designer and Freelance Writer

Moreover, the definition of plagiarism taken from Dictionary.com is, “the unauthorized

use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of

them as one’s own original work”

Plagiarism, pronounce as : /pleɪdʒərɪz(ə)m/. It comes from a Latin verb which carries the

meaning of “to kidnap”, if you copy or plagiarize other work or ideas it is really like kidnapping

someone intellectual efforts and hardworking, and without feeling guilty we announced them as

ours. That is really a heartless crime because sometimes our plagiarism activities will destroy

someone’s future. It is a public dishonesty. Do you want that misfortune to befall on you?

Yes it’s true that sometimes we tense of lacking ideas or informations in writing, yet we

still can write better by reading sources gathered from internet, magazines, newspapers etc. This

are merely to get the ideas and inspirations on how to start our writing. Doing some surveys or

researches will really helps writers a lot. Plagiarism not only meant in writing but also in doing

other task or project. There are people who even plagiarize in producing music , ideas or even in

art work. In business world, plagiarism is really a threat. In order to be on the top or to be selected

in submitting proposals of projects, some individuals or even companies willing to do anything

and without any hesitation they plagiarize others work and purposely steal it.

In the universities or other learning centres, students and lecturers face the same plagiarism

phenomenon. Copying others handwork to complete one assignment as to cope with the speed of

education flow among students and to gain the chancellor award, some students will tends to do

anything even to plagiarize.

Picture 2: How to avoid unintentional plagiarisim on essay writing.

As a student, what is the purpose of studying? Besides to get the bachelor tittle, we are not

only improving our knowledge but also to be a better person and communities. So we must avoid

plagiarism by referencing the source or information and write them in quotation marks or block

quotes. We must acknowledge the person’s ideas in our writing as we have taken their source .

QUESTION 6

A PROPOSAL TO HAVE BICYCLE LANES IN THE HOUSING AREA.

Page 16: noraini-writing assignment.doc

Residents of Pura Chendana,

Batu Pahat, Johor.

Attention: To whom it may concern.

Proposal Of Bicycle Lane

The small city of Pura Chendana is a safe neighbourhood filled with young families,

seniors citizens, people of all ages and from all walks of life, however when it comes to cycling

activities, Pura Chendana is totally the opposite. Cycling in the area with no bicycles lane is really

a nightmare.

Picture 1and 2: Cycling in the area with no bicycles lane, it’s dangerous.

Nowadays almost every house has a bicycle. We love to cycle around the neighborhood in

the evening after a tiring day at work. We cycle for leisure or for exercise to keep fit and healthy.

Cycling is an enjoyable activity and also we can correspondence with others who had the same 16

Page 17: noraini-writing assignment.doc

OUMH1203SMP ENGLISH FOR WRITTEN COMMUNICATION NORAINI BT IBRAHIM 681016016426

interest. If we think of it, is it really safe to cycle although it is around the neighborhood? This

thought came across my mind because we don’t have any proper bicycle lane or cycling track safe

enough for the cycling lovers to enjoy their ride.

We often heard cyclist being knockdown by motorcars, vans or even lorries. I’ve seen a

bicyclist hit by a car on my way to work. I also heard that two Bangladesh workers, who cycles to

work, involved in bicycle car accident. That is really a dreadful incidents. We don’t want that to

happen to our love ones. And thinking of it I feel like I rather quit cycling and so do others. But

this is not going to solve the problems.

The graph of accident cases involving the cyclist is tremendously increase but we still can’t

locate whether it is because of the reckless cyclist or is it because of no proper lanes or cycling area

being provided for the activities. So therefore I would like to draw your attention on this matter and

let’s put our hands and minds together to solve this problem. Being a caring society we have to

look upon this matter as it concerning our children and future generations too.

We don’t want things to happen first and then we tends to make a fuss out of it and to

blame the authorities for not taking the actions.

Picture 2: Suggestion lane for bicycle.

It’s our duty and responsibility to take the first steps. We desperately need a bicycle lane to

feel safe. The above diagram (Picture 2) represent a suggestion on how to build a bicycle lane.

Why do we need the lane? It’s because the lanes help us;

1. To define the road space.

2. To lessen the bicyclist stress when riding.

3. To teach the bicyclist to ride in correct direction.

4. To tell the motorist that the bicyclist also have the right to be on the road.

17

Bicycle Lane

Page 18: noraini-writing assignment.doc

OUMH1203SMP ENGLISH FOR WRITTEN COMMUNICATION NORAINI BT IBRAHIM 681016016426

5. To reduce the chance that motorist will stray into bicyclist’s path.

6. To give the bicyclist comfort to do their cycling activities.

7. To practice more orderly traffic flow.

8. To support bicycling as means of transportation.

9. To remind the motorists to look for the bicyclist when making a turning or opening their car

doors.

From my reading, the lanes help to improve road safety and promote proper riding behaviour.
