North Side Grouping Mass Schedule Week of October 21, 2018
Meet the Clergy Team of the
North Side Grouping
Very Reverend Lawrence A. DiNardo
Very Reverend Lawrence A. DiNardo was appointed the Team Moderator of
our parish grouping by Bishop Zubik effective October 15, 2018. He was born
in 1948, a native of West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He has obtained academic
degrees in Philosophy, Theology, Church Administration and Canon Law. In
addition to this new responsibility, he is the Vicar General and General
Secretary of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. He has served in many capacities in
the administration of the diocese. He has been the Adjutant Judicial Vicar of the Diocesan
Tribunal, the Chancellor of the Diocese and the Vicar for Canonical and Legal Services. He
serves on numerous Boards and Commissions of the Diocese and for the Church in the
United States. In his pastoral assignment, he has served as a Parochial Vicar at Saint Vitus
Parish in New Castle, Chaplain of Sancta Sophia House of Studies in Pittsburgh, Pastor of
Saint Joachim Parish in Greenfield (now merged with Saint Rosalia in Greenfield) and Pastor
of Holy Wisdom Parish in the Northside (the merger of Saint Ambrose and Saint Boniface
Parishes). Father DiNardo is an avid sports fan and enjoys playing golf.
Fr. Louis DeNinno
Father Louis DeNinno was raised in Pittsburgh’s Sharpsburg and O’Hara
neighborhoods. He is a 1964 graduate of North Catholic High School. He was
ordained on October 23, 1976 with Fr. Larry Smith and Fr. Jim Garvey. He
holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from John Carroll University, a Mas-
ters of Divinity from Saint Francis Seminary and has a JCL from the Catholic
University of America. His past assignments were: Parochial Vicar at Purification of the
Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Ellwood City, Mother of Sorrows Parish in McKees Rocks, Our
Lady of Joy Parish in Plum, Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland, Immaculate Conception Parish
in Bloomfield, Saint Paul Parish in Butler & Resurrection Parish in Brookline. He has served
as Chaplain at West Penn Hospital and Shadyside Hospital with residence at Sacred Heart
Parish, Shadyside. He also served as part-time Parochial Vicar at Saint Catherine of Siena
Parish in Beechview before coming to Holy Wisdom Parish in 2001. He has also served in
the Tribunal since 1986 as Defender of the Bond and Tribunal Judge. He is also a Canoni-
cal Consultant in the Office of Matrimonial Concerns since 2002. While serving as Parochial
Vicar at St. Paul Cathedral, he oversaw the extensive project of taking out all the pews and
having them refinished and assisted in laying the white granite floor during the first renova-
tion from June of 1984 until March of 1985. In addition to being assigned to team ministry on
the North Side, he still serves as a full-time Tribunal Defender of the Bond and as a Canoni-
cal Consultant in the Office of Matrimonial Concerns. He is also Chaplain of the F.O.P. Ft.
Pitt Lodge #1 and is the Episcopal Master of Ceremony for Bishop William Winter for the
administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation. His goal is to well serve the people of God
on the North Side and in Tribunal matters and Matrimonial Concerns.
Fr. Anthony Gargotta
As we begin the future of our North Side Group of parishes, I would like to tell
you some basic things about myself. I grew up in Beechview. I first thought of
being a priest in sixth grade. It developed more in High School but I pushed it
off until age 33 because I struggled with the thoughts of being married. I went
to St. Catherine of Siena Parish and grade school and Seton La-Salle High
School. I was undecided in a career and jumped schools for a while then
settled into a program for Radiation Therapy at CCAC. At that time this was a new and
developing program. I dated and was close to marriage but God kept calling. After working
as a Radiation Therapist for 10 years, I entered seminary at St. Paul at age 33 and received
a Bachelors in Philosophy. I finished my years of seminary at St. Vincent receiving a Masters
of Divinity and a Masters of Arts in Scriptures. I was ordained in 2001 at the age of 39. I have
served at Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Natrona Heights, St. Edward in
Blawnox, St. Francis in Harmar, and at St. Bernadette in Monroeville. I also have been
assigned to Blessed Sacrament School, St. Joseph High School, Serra Catholic High School
as well as chaplain for Allegheny Valley, St. Margaret, UPMC East and Forbes Regional
Hospitals. I also have worked with the homeless, juvenile detention, and various other
community services. I currently serve as chaplain for the Catholic Daughters of America and
the Knights of Columbus. I am an only child, my mother still lives in our house in Beechview
and my father passed in a work accident when I was a child. I look forward to working with all
of you. Lastly, I suffer from some food allergies, so please do not be offended if I am with
you and do not eat certain foods. Peace of Christ, Fr. Tony.
Fr. Charles Speicher
My name is Father Charley Speicher and I was ordained to the Priesthood in
1975. I grew up in Baldwin Boro and my family attended Saint Wendelin
Parish (now part of Holy Apostles Parish). I served in many parishes, both as
parochial vicar and pastor. I also spent time in hospital ministry, both at
Mercy Hospital and Shadyside Hospital. I also taught moral theology for
many years at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary on Perryville Avenue and
also at Saint Paul Seminary. I have taught permanent deacons for our Diocese and for the
Byzantine Church. I have worked many years in the Marriage Tribunal for the Diocese and I
also serve on the Institutional Ethics Committee at UPMC Mercy. I am blessed to be able to
serve all these wonderful congregations on the North Side!
Meet the Clergy Team, continued
Fr. James Orr
I received B.A. in Religious Studies from Penn State; A Masters of Divinity
from Mt. St. Mary Seminary; and a Masters in Formative Spirituality from
Duquesne University. I have served in the following parishes as Parochial
Vicar: St. Germaine, St. Joseph in Mt. Oliver, St. Sebastian, St. Basil,
St. Joseph in Verona, and All Saints. As Pastor: Holy Family in New
Brighton, St. Albert the Great, St. Aloysius, and Most Holy Name of Jesus.
I also served while recuperating from surgeries as a Chaplain to the Sisters of St. Joseph in
Baden. Am now serving as my principal ministry Director of St. Anthony Chapel and am
part time to the Local group of parishes as a member of the team.
Fr. Lawrence Smith
Father Larry Smith...ordained a priest with Father Jim Garvey in 1976.
Served at a number of parishes throughout the diocese including Most Holy
Name and St. Aloysius. I was a Chaplain at Mayview Hospital and spent
fourteen years in Team Ministry at St. John of God Parish in McKees Rocks.
Before becoming a priest, I was a Child Care Worker at Holy Family Institute
and Activities Counselor at St. Paul Orphanage which is now St. Paul
Seminary. I retired as a priest in 2015 and became Administrator of St. Cyril of Alexandria
Parish when the pastor, Father Larry Burney died. As our grouping comes together, I begin
retirement again. But, I hope to remain active celebrating Masses at the different churches,
staying involved at Northside Catholic Assumption Academy, helping out at the Special Ed at
Most Holy Name, and assisting in a variety ways. We have so many wonderful talented
people in our grouping and TOGETHER we will form a new parish with the outpouring of the
gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Deacon Gery Pielin
Deacon Gery is originally from the South Hills of Pittsburgh, but has lived in
the North Hills since he was twenty-one. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in
history from Duquesne University. He is also a graduate of the Pittsburgh
Institute of Mortuary Science and is a licensed funeral director. Deacon Gery
was ordained to the diaconate on June 15, 2013 and was then assigned to
minister at St. Maria Goretti Parish in the Bloomfield, Friendship and Garfield
areas. Deacon Gery lives in McCandless with his wife. They have two adult children and one
grandson.

Deacon Gregory Jelinek
I grew up in Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish and School, and attended North
Catholic High School. I went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree (1980) and
a Masters Degree in Theology (1987) from Duquesne University, as well as
graduate education credits for certification in elementary education. My
vocation has led me to teach in several elementary and high schools in the
Diocese of Pittsburgh, including Most Holy Name and Cardinal Wright Regional Schools, and I
currently teach freshman Religion and chair the Religion Department at Central Catholic.
I have always sought to serve the people of God in parish ministry, helping to facilitate parish
liturgy committees, adult education and Bible studies, RCIA programs, pre-baptismal
preparation, religious education for people with special needs, and ministry to the elderly and
homebound, among others. At Fr. Schorr's suggestion, I applied and was accepted into
diaconal formation, and was ordained a deacon in 1999. My assignment so far has been to
Most Holy Name Parish, St. Anthony Chapel, and later to St. Aloysius Parish as well. Some
aspects of ministry that have brought me great joy since ordination include serving the
community of prayer at St. Anthony Chapel's weekly novena and benediction, preaching and
assisting at mass, witnessing marriages and baptizing children of former students in the new
generation of believers. I am so happy that Bishop Zubik has assigned me to serve the peo-
ple of the current North Side Grouping. The word deacon means servant, so I look forward to
working with you to serve the needs of our people. I hope to get to know many more of you
over the coming months, and invite you to be in touch with any concerns or suggestions as to
how I might be of assistance to you. I am married for twenty-eight happy years to my wife
Mary Jo. We have one son, Jeremy, who is currently in graduate studies at Catholic U in
Washington DC. In my leisure moments I enjoy gardening, cooking, hiking, and reading.
Mary Swindal, Pastoral Associate
My name is Mary Swindal, and I am so gratified to be brought on to serve as the
Pastoral Associate for the Northside parish grouping. You may wonder: what is a
Pastoral Associate? The position supports the pastoral work of the parish and
clergy, and the responsibilities stem from the needs of the parishes and the clergy
team. For your parishes, I will assist the clergy team and individual ministries and
groups with issues surrounding coming together, and in meeting the pastoral needs
of the parishes. I also am particularly responsible for ensuring that the needs of our elderly
parishioners - who are the true foundation of our parishes - are not lost through this major
change in parish life. I will appreciate your knowledge and perspective as I get to know your
parishes in the days ahead since I am new to the Northside. I spent three years as Pastoral
Associate at Holy Apostles parish in Carrick/Overbrook/Baldwin, and was heavily involved
with the work of bringing the original four parish communities there together in 2016. Prior to
that, my parish experience was at St. Thomas More in the South Hills where I was a parish
volunteer (including co-chairing the parish festival for six years). My pastor there encouraged
me to consider formal parish work, and I then earned a degree in Pastoral Ministry from
Duquesne in 2013. While I was born in Pittsburgh, my family moved to New York State right
after I was born, and I moved back in 2005 when my husband got a job at Duquesne Univer-
sity. I was able to stay home to raise my four kids who are now high school age and above. I
consider it a gift to be coming to your parishes, and I look forward to working together through
these challenging times to continue to be Christ’s light to each other and our communities.

Respect Life Month
Because the divine goodness could not be
adequately represented by one creature alone,
God produced many and diverse creatures, so
that what was wanting in one in the representa-
tive of the divine goodness might be supplied by
another...Thus the whole universe together
participates in the divine goodness more
perfectly and represents it better than any
creature on its own.
-St. Thomas Aquinas
Children long for somebody to accept them, to
love them, to praise them. Let us bring the chil-
dren back to the center of our care and concern.
This is the only way the world can survive be-
cause our children are the only hope of our fu-
ture. -Mother Theresa
As far as the right to life is concerned, every
innocent human being is absolutely equal to all
others. This equality is the basis of all authentic
social relationships which, to be truly such, can
only be founded on truth and justice,
recognizing and protecting every man and
woman as a person and not as an object to be
used. Before the moral norm which prohibits the
direct taking of an innocent human being, there
are no exceptions for anyone. It makes no
difference whether one is the master of the
world or the “poorest of the poor” on the face of
the earth. Before the demands of morality we
are all absolutely equal. 000000000000

Saint Peter Parish Week of October 21, 2018
All Souls Remembrance
On All Souls Day, Friday, November 2, and throughout
the month of November, the Church traditionally
remembers those who have departed from this life. In
keeping with this tradition, our parish also remembers
our family members, relatives and friends who have
died. An envelope is provided in your collection
packet for this purpose. We ask that you kindly write
their names on the space that is provided on the
envelope. These envelopes will be placed on the Altar
on All Souls Day and will remain on the Altar
throughout the month of November as we remember
and pray for our beloved dead.
On Friday, November 2, we will observe All
Souls Day with a special commemoration in Saint Peter
Church at a 6:30 p.m. Mass. At this liturgy, we will
remember the deceased who were buried from Saint
Peter Parish since last All Souls Day. After Holy
Communion, a family member, relative or friend of
each of the recently deceased will be invited to
gather around the Altar with a lighted candle as we
pray for the deceased by name, asking the angels to
lead them into paradise. Everyone is invited to join in
this beautiful act of remembrance. A reception will be
held in the vestibule after the Mass.
Honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary
This week the flowers adorning the Blessed Mother
Altar are In Thanksgiving for blessings received,
donated by Beverly Smith.
Baptism Preparation Classes
Parents who are anticipating the birth of their first
child are required to take a baptism preparation
class prior to the baptism. Classes will be held in the
meeting room of Our Lady, Queen of Peace Church
on Sundays, November 4, and December 2 at 2:30
p.m. For information/registration please call
412.321.3186. No walk-ins, please.
Our Deepest Sympathy
Please remember in your prayers the soul of our
parishioner Anthony Nee, husband of our
parishioner, Laura Nee. May Anthony, who was
united with Christ in a death like His, also be one with
Christ in His Resurrection.
MOMS Group
Our parish’s MOMS group is for mothers-to-be, as well
as mothers of newborns through school age children.
The purpose of the group is both spiritual and social.
Moms may bring their children to the meeting. The
next meeting will be Wednesday, October 24, at 6
p.m. at St. Peter Church. For additional information call
Amy at 724.622.9452.

2018 SUMMER APPEAL Fall has arrived and with
that, the end of the annual summer appeal. The summer
appeal was very successful thanks to our wonderfully gen-
erous parishioners. The parish made $7,970.00! This
went a long way to paying for the pipe repairs in the edu-
cation center as well as other expenses that came up that
we had not budgeted for like air conditioning and plumb-
ing repairs. Thank you all for your support as we move
forward into this new adventure God has planned for us.
Attention Those Who Crochet and Knit We
are in need to yarn to start a new project. If you
are interested in donating some, please bring it to
church and give it to Mary Ann or Mary S., or call Mary
Ann at (412)931-1935, and she will come and get it.
59ER’S The 59er’s is a social group for the senior citi-
zens of the parish. The group meets for lunch and bingo
on the second Thursday of the month, except for January
and February. Lunch costs $3.00 and starts at 12:00 PM.
The menu varies from sandwiches and side dishes to hot
full course meals. Dessert is included. Bingo starts after
lunch. No reservations are needed. Just show up and be-
come part of the group.
DAMASCUS DINER The Damascus Diner, or the
Saturday Men’s Breakfast as it’s sometimes called, is an
informal gathering of men for breakfast and camaraderie.
It takes place on the second Saturday of the month.
Breakfast is served at 8:30 AM. Around 9:00 AM we ex-
plore a topic about how we as men are challenged to live
our Catholic faith in today’s world. We conclude around
9:45 AM with a brief prayer. While we are few in num-
ber, there are still diverse backgrounds among the men
who attend regularly. We don’t always see eye to eye, but
we are all interested in learning more about our faith and
finding simple ways to try to live it more fully each day.
There is no pressure to participate in
discussions; each man is free to
contribute or observe as he sees fit.

Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of
the Relic of St. Andrew, Apostle
at St. Anthony's Chapel
On Sunday, November 4th at 3:00 pm, we
will begin to pray the Church's evening prayer
before Christ in the Eucharist. The Blessed
Sacrament will be exposed in the monstrance
at the beginning of evening prayer and the
service will conclude with Benediction, Christ
imparting His blessing to us in His Eucharistic
Presence.
Following the service, the faith-
ful who wish to do so will have
the opportunity to venerate a
relic of one of the saints. For
November, it will be the relic
of St. Andrew, whose feast
day is on November 30th.
From the desk of the Director
From time to time I will use this space to
keep all of you updated on news about the
Chapel.
The Chapel is in an evolution to being an
independent institution and a National Shrine.
My work is to upgrade the various services the
Chapel offers and build an endowment that will
support the Chapel in the future.
There is an actual check list that I have to
go through to take the Chapel from its current
status to a National Shine. At the head of this
check list is Mass every day and the Sacrament
of Penance being available to the Pilgrims. As
you can see elsewhere in this bulletin, Mass is
already being celebrated everyday. Confessions
are presently available Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday and Saturday from 2pm to 3pm and
on Fridays after the 8:30am Mass.
We also need to expand our volunteer
corps so we can have the Chapel open and well
served for the full time that the Chapel is open
for pilgrims. Our dedicated volunteers are too
few to do that now. If you’d like to help, call the
Chapel phone and leave your name and num-
ber.
More in future bulletins. May the Saints pray
for you.
Pax,
Fr. Jim Orr

Stimson Chapman tell a faith journey you won’t
forget. A nominal Catholic with little catechesis,
she left the Church, being drawn to Evangelical
Christians. She returned to Catholicism after she
was challenged to learn about the Catholic faith
and Scripture. She struggled with anorexia but
then encountered the Theology of the Body which
redeemed her relationship with food and helped
her rediscover the Eucharist. She waited to find
her husband and then waited through an adoption
process she called beautiful and terrifying. Emily
is a Catholic writer, book author, blogger, and
speaker. Cost of the breakfast is $23. To register,
visit www.magnificatpittsburgh.org or call Pam at
412-461-8906. Registration deadline is Nov. 9.

the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Secretariat for Leader-
ship Development and Evangelization.

Whoever Wishes To Be Great Among You Will
Be Your Servant – The request of the sons of
Zebedee, James and John, to be seated one on
each side of Jesus when he reigns in glory sets
off a firestorm among the Apostles. They argue
about who is the greatest and are quickly focused
on who has more power and authority than the
others. Jesus reminds them that, while this may
be the way of the world, they must be different.
Whatever power and authority is theirs is given to
them by God and must be used for the service of
others. As the implementation of On Mission for
The Church Alive! begins we will be looking to dis-
cover what our parish groupings need to best
serve the faithful of our parishes and the commu-
nities where we live. We all love our parishes, but
our love for Christ and the Church as a whole is
even stronger. It may be a challenge to put aside
what we are familiar with for the sake of the good
of all, but we are called to trust in God’s guidance
as he works to build up the Church. Visit onmis-
sionchurchalive.org to stay informed.
