The mine is located approximately 600 kilometres northwest of Port Moresby, and about 680 kilometres by road from the coastal port of Lae from which all materials are freighted. This road is subject to wash outs and tribal disputes making transportation extremely challenging at times. A Strategic Operational Review Team (SORT) consisting of Jamieson Group personnel and Barrick personnel (fully trained by Jamieson Group) conducted a thorough review of the Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) operations. The SORT Project has been undertaken in an effort to improve operational efficiency and performance; and ultimately to improve PJV margins per ounce ($/ oz). One of the key projects of the SORT implementation (known as Wok Wantaim Save (WWS)) was the “PJV Stores / Supply” Project. The Challenge To assist Porgera in achieving the goals of WWS, it was essential that availability of equipment was maintained and that access to critical parts was established and maintained. All inventories are classified according to criticality, and critical spares need to be reviewed in regards to suppliers, lead times and inventory levels. The ApproachThe SORT team conducted a series of interactive value stream mapping sessions with supply staff to identify bottlenecks. The team also conducted interactive sessions between on site customers and supply staff to better understand customer requirements and develop systems to deliver to those requirements.

From those sessions the following interventions were identified and implemented. These interventions contributed towards the successful project outcomes:

• Introduction of an action log to the morning meeting to capture issues and ensure those issues were being resolved.

• Good Idea system introduced to enable the workforce to contribute by suggesting improvement ideas.

• Discrepancy data base established and reviewed daily to ensure discrepancies are been resolved in a timely manner

• Weekly review meeting set up to review performance graphs and identify actions to address off target variances.

• Skills Matrix developed to measure current skill levels and identify ongoing training requirements

The Success

The interventions have put a greater awareness and focus on stock out levels. The review of performance graphs both weekly and daily is driving the need to take actions earlier. These early interventions are decreasing stock outs and the PJV Supply team are well on their way to achieving their goal of 1% of inventory stock outs.

The review of performance graphs both daily and weekly is driving the need to take action earlier.
