What are Non Vascular Plants?
No stems, leaves or true roots and phloem and xylem (vascular tissue) to transport materials.Called bryophytes. Not very tall (only a few cm).
Where are bryophytes found?
Moist environments
Usually live on soil
Can grow on rocks, dead trees, and buildings
Are 400 million yearsold.
How do bryophytes reproduce?
Asexually:● Called vegetative reproduction
1. Small segments of the plant breaks off and grows into an identical new plant
2. A small part of the plant branches off and grows into an identical new plant
Sexually:
For fertilization to occur, water must be present.Sperm needs to “swim” from the male reproductive organ to the female one. They produce spores rather than seeds. The spores are released by plants produced by fertilization.Wind or water carry the spores to a different environment where they mature.
Importance of Bryophytes
Peat moss is burned as a source of electricity and also used as a soil additive.
Canada is the third largest producer of peat moss.
Peat moss is disappearing rapidly.
Why is this a concern?
Because peat moss comes from peat bogs.
Peat bogs are a storage for carbon dioxide and remove its affect from the carbon cycle.
So, since they are disappearing, more carbon dioxide is in the atmosphere = GLOBAL
