School District
In May of 2015, Klein ISD residents made their voice heard by overwhelmingly voting in favor of the 2015 bond blueprint. This affirmation indicates that the community clearly places Future Ready education as a top priority. The district sincerely appreciates the community’s support and looks forward to building for the future together with each of you.
This annual performance report highlights some of the amazing programs and information from last school year. It is clear that academic achievement and character education continue to be the cornerstone of the Klein ISD community.
Featured inside are examples of how our 50,500 students and more than 6,700 employees benefited from the community’s Future Ready commitment to education. Numerous district and student awards indicate the quality work done on a daily basis in our district. Of particular note is Zwink’s National School of Character honor that is rooted in its core values: educational excellence, prized relationships, collaborative community, an attitude of gratitude and intentional loyalty. These students and staff are to be commended for their work on character education.
The STEAM Express mobile classroom made its debut last year visiting schools, community libraries and conferences. The STEAM Express sparks interest in STEAM careers through Science, Technology,
Engineering, Arts and Math explorations. My thanks to the Klein ISD Education Foundation for donating the STEAM Express to the district and to conductor and program coordinator, Bill Nebeker, for launching it with style and purpose. This program is going to benefit the children of Klein ISD for years to come.
This school year marks a bittersweet milestone for me as I begin my journey to retirement in June of 2016. I want to thank the School Board members for their support, and our excellent working relationship as a Team of Eight. In addition, I want to thank all Klein ISD employees with whom I have been privileged to know and work with over the years. Our district’s success is directly linked to the outstanding parental and community support and for you I am ever grateful.
This will mark my 47th year in public education, and I know of no finer profession in which to serve. My 35 years in Klein ISD have been very rewarding for my family and for me. I look forward to another great school year working with the employees, parents and community, and focusing on academic excellence and character education for every child entrusted to us.

The strength of the district’s finances consistently adds value to the school system and ultimately, students across the district. The finance department works tirelessly to ensure that every dollar benefits education while being good stewards of funds received from the community.
Because of this dedication to detail, the Klein ISD finance department earned multiple recognitions during the 2014-15 school year. Two key recognitions are from the Texas Comptroller’s Office and the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Based on data reported in the Financial Allocation Study of Texas (FAST) report, the district earned 4.5 stars. The TEA Financial Integrity Rating System (FIRST) of Texas awarded the district with the rating of Superior Achievement as the finance department received 70 out 70 points based on its financial management practices.
This year marks the 19th year that the district was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) and the 12th consecutive year to receive Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO).

Community members affirmed the district’s plan to build for the future on May 9, 2015, with the approval of the $498.1 million dollar Bond Blueprint. The bond will benefit all Klein ISD students, staff, and community members during this next five-year period. The Blueprint will help to renovate facilities across the district, purchase land for future growth, acquire additional transportation, purchase and enhance technology programs and services, and procure additional safety and security items.
Construction work on two new campuses is currently taking place. This fall, steel is being erected to form the walls and roof at Mahaffey Elementary, located at FM 2920 and Mahaffey Rd. Mahaffey Elementary is funded solely from 2008 Bond funds. Work has already begun on High School #5 which is partially funded out of the 2008 and 2015 Bond funds. Currently, cement slabs are being poured and steel is going up to form the exterior of the building. High School #5 will open in the fall of 2017 and is located on Spring Cypress Rd. next to Ulrich Intermediate.

Donated by the Klein ISD Education Foundation, the STEAM Express is a 48-foot-long custom-built enclosed trailer and has 40 feet of classroom space. It includes a wheelchair lift to ensure access for all Klein ISD students, a drop-down stage with a 19-foot awning, and a 20-kilowatt diesel generator to power the air conditioning system and touch-screen computer displays.
Launched Dec. 1, 2014, with the purpose of inspiring young minds to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math, the STEAM Express visited 40 campuses in the spring semester totaling more than 20,000 Klein ISD student tours.

MET STANDARD
The Klein ISD experienced districtwide gains on the 2015 STAAR test, according to a report released on Aug. 8, 2015, by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Overall, the District earned the “Met Standard” rating.
TEA bases the current year’s results on a range of indicators that assist in providing detailed information on the performance of a district. The system then rates the district and schools as either “Met Standard” or “Improvement Required.” The district surpassed the state in each index and received double-digit scores in the following categories: achievement, progress, closing performance gaps, and postsecondary readiness.
Within the current accountability system, there are ways to recognize campuses for outstanding academic achievement. More than half of Klein ISD schools earned Distinction Designations which compare campuses from across the state with similar configurations. There are seven distinctions that a campus may earn: academic achievement in Reading/ELA, math, science, or social studies; top 25% student progress; top 25% closing achievement gaps; and post-secondary readiness.
For the fourth consecutive year, the on-time graduation rates increased. The Class of 2014 surpassed the state rate and rose to 93.5 percent, up from 91.9 percent in 2013. During the last four years, the graduation rate has increased by 4.3 percent.
