The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child’s Developing MindByDanielSiegel,M.D.andTinaPayneBryson,Ph.D.Your toddler throws a tantrum in the middle of a store. Your preschooler refuses to get dressed. Your fifth-grader sulks on the bench instead of playing on the field. do children conspire to make their parents’ lives endlessly challenging? No—it’s just their developing brain calling the shots!

In this pioneering, practical book, daniel J. Siegel, neuropsychiatrist and author of the bestselling Mindsight, and parenting expert Tina Payne Bryson demystify the meltdowns and aggravation, explaining the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures. The “upstairs brain,” which makes decisions and balances emotions, is under construction until the mid-twenties. And especially in young children, the right brain and its emotions tend to rule over the logic of the left brain. No wonder kids can seem—and feel—so out of control. By applying these discoveries to everyday parenting, you can turn any outburst, argument, or fear into a chance to integrate your child’s brain and foster vital growth

SAVE BY INClUdING THESE BOOKS WITH SEMINAR REGISTRATION!Concerns about falling literacy and math scores of students in the United States have resulted in all states developing new educational standards or adopting the Common Core Standards. Students with language learning differences (English language learners) and language learning disabilities (lld) are typically served in general education classrooms and are expected to achieve these standards.

Students with language learning differences and with language learning disorders typically exhibit deficits in both social and academic language. Rather than working on either social OR academic language skills, the two can and should be addressed simultaneously.

dr. Westby will present:

• Characteristics and complexities of social and academic language, so you are better able to serve students who struggle in the classroom

• Interrelationship between social and academic language and the strategies to promote both social and academic language—allowing you to work on both simultaneously

• How to identify the language foundations necessary for achieving Common Core State Standards, so your instruction will easily align

• Ways to differentiate the content, process, and products of instruction to promote social and academic language

When your students comprehend social and academic language, they will be more successful in the classroom and in social situations.

SpeakerCAROL WESTby, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a fellow of the American-Speech-language-Hearing

Association (ASHA) and holds Specialty Recognition in Child language. She has received the distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Iowa’s department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, the ASHA Award for Contributions to Multicultural Affairs and the honors of ASHA.

For over 20 years, dr. Westby has been principal investigator on a number of clinical service, research and personnel preparation grants, including Project

WrITE (Writing Integrative Texts Effectively), which investigated the use of the New Mexico writing portfolio assessment with general and special education students in fourth and sixth grades; Project TAlES (Talking about life Experiences and Stories) which promoted reading and writing development in Native American students; and Project BRIdGE (Building Reading in diverse Groups in Education), a personnel preparation program that prepared students to work within classrooms to facilitate language-literacy development in children from Hispanic and Native American backgrounds. She is piloting the Kimochis social-emotional program to develop ToM in young elementary school children who exhibit bully-like and victim-like behaviors.

dr. Westby is the developer of the Play Scale and has published and presented nationally and internationally on play, language-literacy relationships, narrative/expository development and facilitation, theory of mind, assessment and facilitation of written language, metacognition/executive function, and issues in assessment and intervention with culturally/linguistically diverse populations. 101 Games and Activities for Children with Autism, Asperger’s, and Sensory Processing DisordersByTaraDelaney,M.S.,OTROne of the best ways for children with autism, Asperger’s, and sensory processing disorders to learn is through play. Children improve their motor skills, language skills, and social skills by moving their bodies and interacting with their environment. Yet the biggest challenges parents, teachers, and loved ones face with children on the autism spectrum or with sensory processing disorders is how to successfully engage them in play.

In 101 Games and Activities for Children with Autism, Asperger’s, and Sensory Processing Disorders, she shows you how to teach your children by moving their bodies through play. These interactive games are quick to learn but will provide hours of fun and learning for your child. And many of the games can be played indoors or outdoors, so your child can enjoy them at home, outside, or on field trips.
