OUTREACH

New Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry

The mission of the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry is to help end local hunger by ensuring that everyone has enough nourishing food, thereby helping our overall community stay healthy and productive. The new facility will equip the Pantry with the tools it needs to better achieve this mission.

The 18,000 square foot building on Jericho Rd. includes a 7,000 square foot warehouse for significantly increased storage capacity of food, as well as a dock for more efficient receiving of large donations. The 5,000 square foot Market area accommodates a client-choice distribution system, with food displayed on shelves and behind glass doors in the large cooler/freezer, allowing those receiving food to make their own food choices. This model is less wasteful and more cost effective, as recipients choose the food they can and will eat, rather than receiving a pre-packed bag that may contain items they cannot use.

An indoor waiting area and restrooms lets the Pantry provide a respectful and dignified experience to those who must utilize the Pantry to ensure they can adequately feed their families.

Prior to moving to the Jericho Rd. site, the Pantry had been distributing food from a 3,000 square foot space that was leased from Hesed House. Between 2008 and 2011, requests for assistance had increased by more than 200%. To accommodate this great increase, the Pantry moved some of its operation outside to the driveway and the parking lot. The need for a larger, more appropriate space became apparent. The Pantry began a search and considered several sites. The building and grounds on Jericho Rd, however, offered a perfect arrangement for the distribution, food storage, and administrative needs of the Pantry. In addition, the building was in relatively good condition and did not need extensive renovation to make it suitable for use as a food pantry.

With a challenge grant from the Dunham Fund, CDBG; Riverboat funding from Kane County and the City of Aurora; smaller grants from private foundations, such as Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley and the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund; and donations from numerous businesses, organizations and individuals, the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry raised nearly $1,000,000 to purchase and renovate the Jericho Road site.

“This project has been a wonderful example of a community that pulls together to develop a quick and positive response when a need presents itself,” said Marilyn Weisner, Executive Director. “We are grateful to all of those who supported this project, as well as those who continue to help the Pantry fight hunger through food donations and financial support.”

The Pantry opened for distribution at the new facility on November 18, 2013 and, over the past six months, has provided food to a continually increasing number of individuals and families. The Pantry currently provides food to about 900 families each week, 3,600 men, women, and children. For more information about the Pantry, visit www.aurorafoodpantry.org or call (630) 897-2127.

Random Acts of Kindness

Each of us, in our own way, have been blessed. Jesus lived His life by glorifying God and blessing others. What a perfect example to follow. In July, think about that example and what you might do to follow in Jesus’ footprints. Mow your neighbors yard. Visit someone who might be longing for companionship. Bake a cake or cookies to drop off at your local firehouse. Take a book to a child in the hospital. Pay for someone else’s haircut at the hair salon.

Get your children involved. They will have a great time and it sets a wonderful example. Share your stories, write them down and give them to Pastor Brian. We’ll share some in upcoming Courier and Vineyard articles. You are blessed, pass it on!

Prayer Matters

It makes a difference. It only takes 10 minutes of daily prayer to notice health benefits. A well-known news anchor, Dan Harris of “Good Morning America”, openly shared his mental and emotional struggles during an April 2014 broadcast.

“Harris admitted he had been suffering from an inner monologue of self-doubt, which caused him to work hard and play harder. The low self-esteem, combined with recreational drug use, he said, led to that very public meltdown, which in turn sent him on a path of self-reflection, therapy and, eventually, a practice of daily meditation.” http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2014-04-22/features/sc-fam-0422-10-percent-

20140422_1_daily-meditation-dan-harris-abc-news

In reading through Dan’s article, I cringe when I read that he investigated “self-help” options. I am hopeful that one day he too will understand the benefits of a community of people gathered together to lift each other up. As members of St. Marks, we have that additional benefit of community. Don’t get me wrong, we should pray every day. Daily prayer does connect us with God and provides us with the benefits of a living, working, day-to-day relationship and walk with God. We should connect regularly in order to enjoy the benefits God so willingly provides!

However, as a community of Christians, we can pray for others as well, and those prayers make a difference. There is a wonderful book, “Prayer is Good Medicine”, by Larry Dossey M.D. He investigated prayer from a scientific stance. He wanted to provide scientific evidence that prayer makes a difference. Through his writings, he provided solid evidence that prayer makes a difference, even when the person being prayed for doesn’t know others are praying for them. If you read his book, there is a great tie to quantum physics beginning on page 31 for those on you out there that like this type of evidence too.

Prayer by one person is good and prayer by more than one person is even better! Make use of the Prayer Ministers in the back of the Sanctuary during communion to multiply the power of your prayers for yourself or for others. Jesus said, “Wherever two or three of you are gathered in my name, I am with you.” He didn’t say this lightly to get people to pray. Jesus said these words because they are a truth that works. Tap into the power of prayer!

PRAYER CORNER

Come Together - Right Now - At 10:30am

On Sunday, September 7th, an enticing new program will be beginning at St. Mark's! "Come Together", which is a project led by our intern, Tracy McClure, will be a children's chapel for grades K-5 at the 10:30am service. While parents are listening to the sermon, children will be able to participate in a sermon of their own in Sanctuary Hall. The children's chapel will last roughly thirty minutes and will consist of songs, crafts and other activities. Once the sermon is complete, the children will return to worship for communion. Although the children's chapel is the main component, the goal of "Come Together" is to have families worship and commune as one.

The "Come Together" program will last for eight weeks, but it is Tracy's goal to have this ministry continue at St. Mark's after her time with us ends. If you would like more information about this exciting new ministry or would like to help Tracy with leading the chapel, please contact her at: [email protected]. Stay tuned for more details!

YOUTH GROUP

CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER As we have come to the end of the school year, we reflect on the children that are moving on to formalized education and welcome the new children coming for our summer camp.

We recently had the opportunity to graduate 19 pre-kindergarten children. We welcomed the children and their families for the Celebration, over 100 parents and siblings came for this wonderful program. The children drew pictures of what they wanted to be when they grew up. (It seems we have many future veterinarians, teachers, and community helpers.) The children were excited to sing their songs and make a presentation to their parents. We know these children will be good learners when they enter kindergarten.

Thank you to all of the parents who have shared their children with us. It is exciting to watch them learn and grow. For the families that have moved on, we hope they will drop by to visit us on occasion.

Special thank you’s to our volunteer baby holders who come to visit us weekly. We have many babies that enjoy the special attention they receive from our visitors.

Thank you to Hope Circle for all of their donations. The children are excited when new items arrive. We appreciated the Kleenex, laundry soap, bibs, and even the empty plastic grocery bags for wet clothes.

Thank you to Faith Circle for their recent monetary donation. This is a welcome gift, as we need supplies to re-open the education rooms at the church.

Many thanks to the Jim Pilmer family for allowing us to use his swimming pool to conduct our recent water safety class. This class is a required training for us to be able to swim with our children during summer camp.

Oklahoma Mission Trip Thank You!

The St. Mark's Youth Group has over 10,000 reasons to be thankful this week and it is because of the overwhelming support that we have received from the members of St. Mark's! When we held our Non-Walkathon we asked for pledges to help support our teens as they experience their faith in new ways through yearly mission trips. We not only met our $10,000 goal but we exceeded it!

We will still gladly accept pledges! Pledges can be turned in to the office or to Pastor Brian. If you have made a pledge but did not turn in money, please make your check out to St. Mark's, with "Youth Group" in the memo line. This can be turned into the office or to Pastor Brian. Thank you for helping us reach our goal! We are so moved by the generosity shown to our teens. We would also like to invite the congregation to join us in blessing and sending our youth as they head out on their mission trip to Oaks Indian Mission in Oak, Oklahoma on Sunday, July 13th at the 10:30am worship service.

Fireworks are synonymous with our celebration of Independence Day. Yet, the thrill of fireworks can also bring pain. Around 200 people on average go the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the month surrounding the July 4th holiday. Remember, fireworks can be dangerous, causing serious burn and eye injuries. You can help prevent fireworks-related injuries and deaths by following these safety tips when using fireworks:

Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them!

Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.

Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.

Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don't realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.

Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.

Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.

Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.

Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly. After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

“Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, Lord. They rejoice in your name all day long; they celebrate your righteousness.”

Psalm 89:15, 16

THANK YOU

Kay Leonard Thank You I want to thank all of you for your prayers and cards while I was in the hospital and at home. You have no idea how much it helps, both emotionally and spiritually. I want to give a special thank you to Pr. Pat and Pr. Brian for their visits and the Care Team for the wonderful Easter Basket. Hope to see you all soon in church.

Outreach Thank You

To our Youth Group and adult leaders participating in our 2014 Mission Trip and to everyone who sponsored them.

Dear members and friends, Thank you for your support, kindness, cards, and prayers during this sad time for me. My father died on May 5th at Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria and a memorial service of thanksgiving was celebrated on May 12th at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Peoria where he and my mother have been members for 60 years.

My father grew up in River Forest and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where his father was a pastor for many decades. Since my Dad was baptized, confirmed ,and married at Grace, and that place has much meaning for my whole family, he will be inurned in their columbarium on Sunday, June 22nd after the 11:00am service. Pr. Modahl has been most gracious and will offici-ate.

My father was a man of deep faith, great generosity and robust love. I am grateful for him and all that he was, and will miss him. Thank you for your ongoing prayers and support.

~Pastor Pat Geiseman

LeRoy Bauer Thank You

I wish to thank the congregation for the prayers and cards, which I received during my heart operation. Your comments and well wishes had a warm, supportive feeling.

The long road to recovery is still ahead. With determination and support I am looking forward to the total recover from a serious operation. The miracle of modern medicine, with the miracle of prayers is very real in my life. What a great congregation St. Mark’s is, many thanks again and God’s blessing to all.

P.S. I have a strong urge to play in the mud, must be the new pig valve.

~LeRoy Bauer

Keegan Hawkins Thank You Thank you St. Mark's for letting us host Keegan's recital last Sunday. We are grateful for the many donations he received as well. A very special thank you to all of you who took time out of your busy schedules to join us in person and show your support for Keegan through your presence. God has blessed us with this community.

Yellow Jug Old Drugs Program The Compounder Pharmacy in Aurora, IL is now participating in the Yellow Jug Old Drugs Program to collect unused and/or expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs for secure responsible disposal. This program is coordinated by the Great Lakes Clean Water Organization, a Non-Profit Organization.

Until recently when a person wanted to dispose of drugs the only option available in many communities was to flush these substances down the drain or send to a landfill. This has led to an emerging problem of increasing amounts of chemicals showing up in our water supply. The Yellow Jug program provides a positive

solution to help address the issue.

You may take them anytime to the Compounder Pharmacy at 340 Marshall Avenue #100 in Aurora, IL, (630) 859-0333, for safe and proper disposal, free of charge. When you bring your drugs, they must be removed from the packaging by the individual and deposited in the Yellow Jug. Please recycle packaging when possible. This program is for individual use only.

Columbarium News The city of Aurora has issued a permit for our columbarium, and the project as an estimated start date of the week of June 23rd to begin construction. If you are interested in more information about this, please check with the church office. The Columbarium Board Members are: Merry Carey, Martha Egeland, Gregg Kobliska, Robert De Paul, and Pastor Pat Geiseman.
