LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP EDUCATION FOUNDATION YEAR-END 2013

Students at Lawrenceville Elementary School are enjoying a new, multisensory outdoor setting where life sciences learning happens. In response to a grant request from the school, the Lawrence Township Education Foundation funded a sensory garden that features many textured plants that display a diverse array of fragrances, colors and leaves, and, in the fall, different types of seed pods.

Multisensory learning helps stimulate brain activity. When this occurs in a natural setting, learning and brain development is longer lasting.

While exploring the Sensory Garden, students will use higher thinking skills such as identifying, analyzing, observing, investigating, comparing, classifying, hypothesizing and critiquing. The wide variety of species

in the garden provides the basis for studies of plant function and defense in Science; pattern recognition and data representation in Mathematics; drawing, painting and sound appreciation in the Visual and Performing Arts; as well as skills for communication and descriptive writing.

Stop by and touch the many textures, smell the fragrances, see the colors, and bathe your senses in the wondrous qualities of the plants in the Sensory Garden at LES on Craven Lane!

NEW GEAR FOR WLMS, THE TV STUDIO AT LAWRENCE MIDDLE SCHOOL.Thanks to a grant from LTEF, Lawrence Middle School’s TV station can now create programming on the go, with the capability to distribute throughout the school, the District, and the entire Lawrence Township community. Students participate in morning announcements, mock elections, televised debates, and more while working as reporters, cast and tech crew.

MISSIONLawrence Township Education Foundation is a local, independent, not-for-profit organization

devoted to enhancing and expanding educational opportunities in our public schools. We receive donations from individuals like you, grants from outside foundations, corporations with interests in our region, and the special

generosity of ETS and The Lawrenceville School. Since 1992, LTEF donations have funded over

550 grants to the school district.

During the 2012-2013 school year your donations funded 41 grants totaling more than $84,157, to benefit students in Lawrence Township Public Schools.Donations were received from more than 635 individuals, companies, institutions and foundations, as well as faculty and staff in the district.

NEW TOOLS TO PROMPT PROBLEM SOLVING AT ALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.Balancing towers, 3-D math modeling kits, pattern building games, invention sets, history and science card kits, and story-telling tins are just some of the objects included in the Thinking Tools Trunk now used by Gifted & Talented/Enrichment students in all four of Lawrence’s elementary schools, thanks to a grant from LTEF. The Thinking Tools Trunk is filled with STEAM

materials (science, technology, engineering, art and math), helping young students

tap into their own capabilities to develop originality, flexibility, problem finding and problem solving. It is a joy to see these young minds igniting with excitement over these learning kits.

RENOVATIONS TO THE LHS LIBRARY-MEDIA CENTER.School libraries play a central role in supporting students, and Lawrence Township Education Foundation is sensitive to the importance of keeping them up to date. The students at Lawrence High School now benefit from a newly-renovated Library-Media Center, provided through a grant

from LTEF. The updates include more areas for group instruction and differentiated learning, additional laptops, modified shelving and new furniture — all designed to support academic excellence, critical thinking skills and lifelong learning.

TEACHING TOUCH TYPING, A LIFE-LONG SKILL.In this age when kids thumb-type on mobile devices, research shows that children with touch-typing keyboarding skills (rather than hunt-and-peck) are better motivated, able to write faster, produce neater documents, and demonstrate improved language arts skills. A modest LTEF grant to Lawrence Intermediate School’s tech lab has funded Keyboard Trainers which cover the keys, and finger positioning guides promoting memorization of the correct touch-typing positions.
