Defining Relative Clauses
• Gives us information about the first part of the sentence, which is needed to identify a person or thing - they define exactly who or what we are talking about.
• Second part starts with a relative pronoun i.e. who, which…
• Doesn’t have commas• Can use ‘That’ instead of who, which…
![Page 4: Non Defining Clauses](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081719/557cf01fd8b42ae6078b51c5/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Two clauses joined together by a relative
pronoun
• Brenda is a friend. I went on holiday with her.
• Brenda is the friend who I went on holiday with.
![Page 5: Non Defining Clauses](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081719/557cf01fd8b42ae6078b51c5/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Example• I spoke to the man. • Which man? What about the man?• We need more detail i.e. • We require a ‘defining relative
clause’.• This gives us detail about the noun
I spoke to the man who gave you the news.
![Page 6: Non Defining Clauses](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081719/557cf01fd8b42ae6078b51c5/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Example 2
• I read the letter
• Which letter?
• We need more detail.
• The one that arrived this morning.

Recap on Defining Relative
Clauses
WHO = people
WHICH = animals and things, …
“THAT” = can be used instead of ‘WHO’ and ‘WHICH’

Compare the two!

![Page 13: Non Defining Clauses](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081719/557cf01fd8b42ae6078b51c5/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Do these sentences have the same
meaning?
• The passengers who came out of the bus went home
• The passengers, who came out
of the bus, went home
![Page 14: Non Defining Clauses](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081719/557cf01fd8b42ae6078b51c5/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Non-Defining Relative Clauses
• Gives us EXTRA information about a person, animal or thing.
• The Relatives go between commas.
• Without this extra information the sentence will still make complete sense.
![Page 15: Non Defining Clauses](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081719/557cf01fd8b42ae6078b51c5/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Example

WHICH• Refers to the whole of the sentence
before
• Can be used to make a comment about the whole situation described in a main clause

They had everything ready for us, which was nice

What’s the reason for using Non-Defining

• What can we do to make is more interesting?
![Page 18: Non Defining Clauses](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081719/557cf01fd8b42ae6078b51c5/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
In Non-Defining Relative Clauses
• We can’t use ‘THAT’
• We can’t omit the Relative Pronouns
