Weekly Market Review Over the past week, according to Trading View: MZN DOWN⬇ 0.41% over USD, from 61.65 to 61.90 MZN ⬇DOWN 2.91% over ZAR, from 4.13 to 4.25 MZN DOWN⬇ 0.86% over EUR, from 68.82 to 69.41 The Metical is fairly stable against the Dollar though it is showing a consistent downward trend since September. According to market information, there is gap between demand and supply in the market but, to some extent, Banco de Moçambique has been filling the gap in order to maintain stability. The Rand has benefited from the depreciation of the dollar due to the positive progress in the U.S.-China trade talks, last week’s positive news resulted in a 0.88% appreciation of the Rand against the Dollar, from 14.76 to 14.63. In the short term, by the end of November, given the above market information, we are of the opinion that importers should, with availability of Meticais, to be on the safe side, advance Dollar payments to suppliers by 70% and by 80% relative to Rand payments if rate is below 4.10. In the medium term, by the end of the year, we must consider several factors, the most important being, on the supply side, donor funds, foreign investment and exports and, on the demand side, imports for the festive season.

Over the past week, according to Trading View:

MZN ⬇DOWN 0.79% over USD, from 63.20 to 62.70

MZN UP⬇ 2.11% over ZAR, from 4.27 to 4.36

MZN ⬇⬇DOWN 0.07% over EUR, from 70.42 to 70.37

The Metical has consistently been losing ground against the Dollar since August

until three weeks ago where is reached 63.65. According to market information,

the market is long due to a decrease in demand as the importers have already

done their orders for the festive season and an increase in supply with foreign

investors and NGOs converting foreign currency to settle the November tax

obligations and year targets.

Following Trump’s positive comments on a trade deal with China, the market

is looking for higher yields even though at a higher risk which resulted in Dollar

losing ground against major currencies. The Rand gained 1.70% against the Dollar

during last week, from 14.81 to 14.41, after reaching 14.35 on Monday.

In the short term, until end of the year, given the above market trend, we are of

the opinion that importers should, with availability of Meticais, to be on the safe

side, advance Dollar payments to suppliers by 30% and by 30% relative to Rand

payments if rate is below 4.20.

In the medium term, by the end of the year, we must consider several factors, the

most important being, on the supply side, donor funds, foreign investment and

exports and, on the demand side, imports of consumables goods for the festive

season.
