Australian Nationals
Volume 3 – July 2017
Nomads News Official Newsletter of Nomads Golf Club - Perth - Western Australia
A cool, let me rephrase that, freezing cold morning greeted us at Hillview. The first stop was
the ½ way house for a hot coffee before teeing off. Some of our regulars were MIA (missing
in action) but this did not deter anyone from the task at hand. At least things heated up in
the latter part of the day resulting in somewhat better scores being recorded on the back
nine. (for example, yours truly only managed a few points on the front nine but shooting
“lights out” on the back nine) (Must be down to having adequately defrosted by the halfway
mark)
News from “over East” is that arrangements for the 2017 Nomads Australia Nationals are
progressing well and final invitations (and Invoices) will be distributed shortly. 16 Perth
Nomads have submitted their EOI’s (Expressions of Interest) which is a record number of
entries since our Inauguration.
Captain Ken and I will shortly be announcing the Squad to play in the 1st
N v S match
scheduled to be played in August at Mandurah Country Club (the date for the match will be
determined within the next 2 weeks) – 12 Southerners and 12 Northeners will be selected.
For those interested in “cheering on” your squad, why not come down to Mandurah to
support your team.
For those who have shown interest in representing Australia at next year’s Nomads South
Africa Nationals to be held in Cape Town over the week 2 to 9 March, EOI’s have been
submitted to Natex and we will be advised in due course (end July) of the outcome of the
selection process.
** Your attention is drawn to the panel on your right......Please note, due to Araluen not
being a “walking course”, we will all have to dig a bit deeper into our pockets to
accommodate the use of a shared cart - $10pp is not a huge amount as the balance of the
costs have been subsidised by the Club
Until Next Month.......................

CAPTAIN’S CORNER
(As Captain Ken is away on his (belated) honeymoon the task of writing the
Captain’s Corner has fallen on the “Fr”-Editor)
Firstly, a huge thank- you to Vice-Captain, Hector West, for the sterling job of running
the day at Hillview. (Great training as well as he will be, in a few short months, will be
in the Captain’s chair)
37 Nomads and 5 Prospective Members took to the course on a very cold winter’s
morning (whilst Ken and Lauren were soaking up the rays in Fiji)- Not fair!!, I say) –
Strange but true, no guests – This must be a 1st for Perth as we normally have a
couple of guests. Let’s just blame this on the cold, early morning start..... Me thinks
that the cold conditions also affected Clint Cowan as last year, at the same venue,
he shot lights out scoring an impressive 42 pointer but this year managed to only
score 22 points, resulting in him being awarded the Crying Towel.
Our membership is growing in leaps and bounds and Hector had the pleasure of
Inducting 2 new Nomads into the fold. A huge welcome to the Nomads family, Roy
Van Straaten and Hennie Blom, may your stay with Nomads be long and fruitful.
(Take note gents, at Araluen you will be the Starters as this will give you an additional
opportunity to get to know more of your fellow Nomads) I have it on good authority
that there will be 2 more Inductions at Araluen.
Craig Le Roux, as Finesmaster, had an awesome day and no-one slipped the net of
his fines session. I was recommended by some that he should be Finesmaster at
every game as he knows how to milk a few fines from all of us.
Thanks to Chris Packham and B Anderson most of you have received your personal
copy of the 2017/2018 Perth Nomads Diary. – Please see B at Araluen for those who
have not received their copies
With only 4 more matches to play before the Annual General Meeting in December,
now is the time to start thinking of who you would like to see taking over the Junior
Vice-Captain’s portfolio for 2018. This is the only position which is elected by ballot
from the floor at the AGM. It must be noted that this position carries a 4-year
commitment as the person elected will progress to the Vice-Captaincy in the 2nd
year and Captaincy in the 3rd year and then serve as Past Captain in the 4th year.
(On behalf of) Ken

Charity Day Convenor
NOMADS APPARELL By Garth Ellis
At this early stage of our fundraising efforts, the Charity Day account is currently sitting at $ 7157 and it is thanks to you, guests and sponsors who participated in the Charity Day event. The application for the raffle license is well underway and as soon as this has been granted we will be making ticket books available which, if all are sold, will add another tidy sum to the overall total. This is where you come into the equation……… grab a book (or 2) and sell, sell, sell. Again, a huge thank you to Paul Connell and his team from Carbon Footie for the donation of a fully installed Solar System, the main prize on offer for the raffle.

RULES
CORNER by Neville Walker
SLOPE SYSTEM
In 1977, Lt Commander Dean Knuth of the US Naval Post-Graduate
School , proposed an improved course rating system that involved the
numerical rating of ten characteristics for each hole.
The idea was to create a portable handicap from one course to the
next – and when playing off different tee boxes. Golfer who gained a
handicap on an easy course would get extra shots when playing a
more difficult course. Golfers with handicaps from a difficult course
would lose shots when playing an easier course. The set of tees used
would also influence a golfer’s handicap on the day.
The Slope Rating System was implemented by the USGA in January
1987.
Since January 1, 1990, every golf association in the United States that
rates golf course uses the USGA Course Rating System.
(Many foreign golf associations, including Australia, are now licensed
to use the system. I understand that South Africa is in the process of
rating all its courses with a view to adopting the Slope Rating System in
the future)
In 2009 I was part of a team involved in rating the metropolitan golf
courses in Perth. Every course, from every set of tee boxes was rated
according to a complex formula that took into account many
different characteristics / obstacles such as length of hole,
recoverability from the rough, depth of bunkers, width of landing area,
hazards, size and contour of greens, etc., etc.
GolfLink acquired the Slope System in January 2014 following the rating
of all the courses in Australia. Every course, from every tee box now
has a Slope Rating which has been incorporated into the new
handicapping system.
Next month I will cover the cessation of the AGU or Club handicap, the
introduction of the GA handicap index and the use of a Daily
Handicap when competing in competitions outside of Nomads.

“Rantings”–
By Neville Walker
As I didn’t play I can’t comment. However, the pace of play was good, but I
was surprised by the scores. I thought they would be higher. Last year Clint
had 42 points, this year 22.
Just a few reminders to Members………………………………………
If the prize-giving is indoors you must change your golf shoes to come inside
unless you play in cross-overs. (Please don’t leave your shoes at the door and
come inside wearing socks )......
If you intend to wear long pants at Nomads matches, please ensure that they
are NAVY blue (the same colour as your shorts)

2017 NOMADS AUSTRALIA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
20 > 22 October 2017
Expressions of Interest have been circulated to all Nomads–Perth members and at the time of
going to print 18 members have submitted their intentions with some more possibilities in the
pipeline.
The next step on the “Road to Sydney” is that, those who have submitted their EOI’s will soon
receive personal Invitations to Participate.
To whet your appetite, here’s some information about the venue……………..
This year the 9th Nomads Australia Nationals Tournament will be held at Kooindah Waters Golf
Club in Wyong, NSW, just over an hour from Sydney.
Completed in 2006, Kooindah Waters golf course was designed by Ross Watson and champion
Australian golfer Craig Parry. Built on natural wetlands in a stunning bushland setting Kooindah
Waters boasts some amazing wildlife including hundreds of species of birds. Complimenting this
tranquil setting is an amazing golf course that has been commonly called a “thinking golfer’ s
course”.
Well known for its meticulous conditioning, Kooindah Waters Golf course offers a fierce challenge
to golfers of all levels. Not only will a player need to avoid water hazards on all 18 holes but Parry
and Watson have also incorporated 84 fairway and green side bunkers, some with railway sleeper
walls, that as well as adding to the aesthetics, also further challenges the golfer. Once these
hazards are cleared, golfers cannot fail to be impressed by the couch fairways and superb bent
greens that roll fast and true.

member-guest – Club tournament usually won as a result of
supernatural play by an old army buddy or one of the members who just got
a little lucky and managed to shoot a Gross Score equal to his GolfLink
handicap index of 38 on the back nine.
mind game – The 90% of golf that is mental as opposed to the 10% that is
psychological.
mixed foursome – A quartet of golfers composed of two separate
grounds for divorce.
mulligan – An additional ball or balls a player is permitted to hit without
penalty, on the opening hole of a round, based on the sound principle that
the first tee is an extension of the driving range, and the line to be crossed
between “practice” and “play” lies approximately 150m out in the middle of
the first fairway.
Nassau – Popular golf bet in which points are awarded on the front and
back nine’s and after the 18-hole round to the player who made the fewest
strokes on the course or obtained the most strokes on the first tee.
needle – Do you always move your lips when you read? Don’t you ever
buy any serious books? Is golf all you ever think about?
19th hole – The only hole on which players do not complain about the
number of shots they took.
numbers **– A player’s score after the subtraction of his or her handicap
from the Gross Score is the Nett Score. Adding strokes for each mulligan
yields the True Score. If whiffs and fluffs are also counted, the resulting
tabulation is the Real Score. If strokes for lost balls, improved lies, and shots hit
out of bounds are included as well, the grand total is the Actual Score. This
number, when adjusted upward to reflect all “gimme” putts, becomes the
Correct Score. When all the strokes made in sand traps and around
obstructions are tacked on, this larger sum is the Absolute, Final, Honest-to-
Goodness Score, which is usually only a half-dozen or so strokes lower than the
total number of shots the player in fact made.
obstructions – Golfers may move their ball away from or remove any
artificial obstacle not part of the course such as torn and crushed hats and
other discarded articles of clothing; chewed scorecards; ripped instruction
books; halved golf balls; discarded golf clubs; demolished handcarts; and
overturned and burning electric carts.
