Keywords: GSM, EDGE, BTS, UltraSite, Fan Summary: This Technical Note gives guidelines for unit cooling fan and cabinet

cooling fan troubleshooting in possible fault situations in UltraSite EDGE BTS.

The Technical Note also summarises the SW corrections since BTS SW CX4.0, which have been made to improve the performance of Cooling Fans in UltraSite EDGE BTS, as well as details the future planned corrections.

The information in this Technical Note has been updated into the Alarm

Descriptions [Reference 1] document in the BTS SW CX4.1 Release documentation in Nokia Online Services (NOLS). The fault correction information will be updated in the next issue of Generic Failure Report document to be published in NOLS Documentation Centre at the end of November 2005.

Description: Unit Cooling fan unit

There are eleven unit cooling fans in the UltraSite EDGE BTS cabinet and seven unit cooling fans in UltraSite EDGE MIDI cabinet. The unit cooling fans provide the necessary cooling for the UltraSite units during BTS operation. The alarms and troubleshooting instructions for the Unit Cooling fan: 7602 BCF Notification

3. If the TSxx fan is alarming: • Remove the TSxx in front of the

fan. If the fan starts working, the removed TSxx is broken.

• If the fan still does not rotate after the first TSxx was removed, reinsert it and remove the second TSxx in front of the fan. If then fan starts rotating, the second TSxx is broken.

• If the fan does not work after the TSxx removal test, the fan is broken and has to be replaced.

4. For other fan alarms, replace the corresponding fan unit. 5. Otherwise, replace the BOI unit.

Software corrections: Apart from the generic troubleshooting instructions, the maintenance engineer has to be aware of BTS SW corrections for cooling fan unit operation. The workaround instructions for these problems have to be checked and carried out if needed before proceeding with normal maintenance actions. The BTS SW corrections already implemented since CX4.0: TSxx fan control is not changed to other TSxx in case of fan failure alarm Exists in: PU1.0 Problem solved in: CX4.0-3 Description:

Page 5: Nokia Fan Unit

The TSxx unit fan is controlled by one of the two TSxx units physically located in front of the fan unit. Only one of the TSxx units has fan control at a time. In a SW version earlier than CX4.0-3, controlling the TSxx is only changed when the BTS configuration is changed (for example, TSxx removed or added) or the O&M SW has no connection to the TSxx unit. A correction is made so that in case of fan failure, the TSxx fan control is always changed to another TSxx unit when possible.

Workaround: N/A

System impact: No effect on end-user services. The second TSxx unit might overheat due to a fan failure. Unnecessary Cooling fan alarms Exists in: CX3.0 Problem solved in: CX4.0-4 Description: UltraSite BTS is operating at low ambient temperature. As the cooling of the cabinet is not required, the particular fans are stopped. When the temperature inside the cabinet rises and the cooling would be required, it may happen that the fan does not start rotating again. Alarms 7602 BCF NOTIFICATION ‘Cooling fan is broken’ are raised. The same problem may happen also with newer UltraSite cabinet versions. The fan units inside these cabinets meet the tolerance requirement, but the BTS SW does not fully comply with the tolerances. The problem may also occur in normal indoor ambient temperatures. Workaround: Lock/Unlock the BCF System impact: Unnecessary cooling fan alarms. Cooling fans start and stop continuously at low temperatures Exists in: CX3.0 Problem solved in: CX4.0-4 Description: When UltraSite BTS is operating at approximately +13°C ambient temperature, it may happen that the fan stops and starts continuously until the ambient temperature changes.

A hysteresis is added to the SW with different start and stop temperatures.

Page 6: Nokia Fan Unit

Workaround: N/A System impact: Continuous starting and stopping the fan may shorten the fan lifetime. TRX cooling fan may stop when power supply is switched off and back on Exists in: CX4.0-4 Problem solved in: CX4.1 Description: Both TRX units connected to a single BB2x card are locked. The power is switched off and back on from the PWSx power supplies. After a few minutes, the fan unit for the locked TRX units will stop without any alarm. Unlocking the TRX units will start the fan again. Workaround: Lock/unlock the TRX or the sector System impact: The TRX units will overheat, which shortens the unit lifetime. Future scheduled BTS SW corrections: Alarms not clearing when faulty HW is replaced Exists in: CX3.3-2 Target for solving: CX5 Description: Cooling fan is faulty and alarm 7602 BCF NOTIFICATION ‘Cooling fan is broken’ is reported. After changing the faulty fan in the site, the alarm may remain active although the fan is running normally. Workaround: Lock/unlock the BCF System Impact: An unnecessary cooling fan alarm is reported. Fans are running although their associated TSxx units are in intelligent shutdown mode Exists in: CX4.0-4 Target for solving: CX5

Page 7: Nokia Fan Unit

Description: When Intelligent Shutdown is activated, alarm 7995 is reported at the BSC and the TRXs are shut down (BL-PWR). However, the fans associated with the shutdown TRXs continue running. This is not the expected operation because the associated fans should power off to save power. Workaround: N/A System impact: No effect on end-user services. Fans are left running unnecessarily.

Future scheduled BTS SW corrections: UltraSite outdoor BTS sector reset may cause Cabinet Door Fan to stop Exists in: CX4.0-3 Target for solving: CX4.1 CD1.0 Description: When resetting a sector from outdoor cabinet, the door fan may stop working after about 20 seconds. No alarms can be seen on the stopped fan unit. Workaround: OMU reset at the BSC clears the problem. System impact: The outdoor cabinet will remain active without proper cooling. The problem may cause high temperature alarms from UltraSite units. The Cabinet fan does not restart when Intelligent Shutdown is disabled Exists in: CX4.0 Target for solving: CX4.1 CD1.0 Description: UltraSite Outdoor Cabinet is in use. The Cabinet door fan will stop when any of the TRX is detected as a shutdown TRX. However, the Cabinet fan should restart once the intelligent shutdown state is disabled. It is observed that after the cancellation of the alarm 'Mains breakdown', although all the TRXs come back to working state, the cabinet door fan is not restarted. Workaround: OMU reset at the BSC clears the problem. System impact: The outdoor cabinet will remain active without proper cooling. The problem may cause high temperature alarms from UltraSite units. Correction is not needed for the following problem in GFR: UltraSite CAFA cabinet fan speed control curve in the BTS SW does not match the actual fan rotation curve Exists in: CX3.3-1 Target for solving: N/A

TN Version 1.0.0 © Nokia Corporation 9 (12)133- 019037 00

Page 10: Nokia Fan Unit

Description: The UltraSite CAFA cabinet fan speed control curve in the BTS SW does not match the actual fan rotation curve. This may result in unnecessary '7602 BCF notification: Cabinet fan speed has reduced from the set speed' alarms. Customer feedback has indicated that the problem does not exist anymore with BTS SW CX4.0-5. Workaround: N/A System impact: No effect on end-user services. Nokia recommendations The cooling system in the UltraSite cabinet has been designed so that in case of cooling fan failures, the cooled objects (units) are not blocked in order to maintain the operation of the units as long as possible. When a critical temperature is reached in a unit, corresponding temperature high alarm will block it. However, the high temperature level inside a unit will shorten the lifetime of the unit. Nokia recommends changing the faulty fan units in the field as soon as possible. Furthermore Nokia recommends using the latest BTS SW available because of the possible SW corrections for the operation of the fan units.
