Get started

Insert SIM card and batterySafe removal. Always switch the device off and disconnectthe charger before removing the battery.

The SIM card and its contacts can be easily damaged byscratches or bending, so be careful when handling,inserting, or removing the card.

1 Remove the back cover by lifting it from the top end ofthe device (1).

2 Remove the battery (2).3 Open the SIM card holder, and insert the SIM card (3).

down and that the bevelled corner on the card is facingtoward the top of the device. Close the holder (4).

4 Insert the battery (5), and replace the back cover (6).

Charge the batteryYour battery has been partially charged at the factory. Ifthe device indicates a low charge, do the following:

1 Connect the charger to a wall outlet.2 Connect the charger to the device.3 When the device indicates a full charge, disconnect the

charger from the device, then from the wall outlet.

You do not need to charge the battery for a specific lengthof time, and you can use the device while it is charging. Ifthe battery is completely discharged, it may take several

minutes before the charging indicator appears on thedisplay or before any calls can be made.

Antenna

Your device may have internal and external antennas.Avoid touching the antenna area unnecessarily while theantenna is transmitting or receiving. Contact withantennas affects the communication quality and maycause a higher power level during operation and mayreduce the battery life.

The figure shows the antenna area marked in grey.

Headset

Warning:When you use the headset, your ability to hear outsidesounds may be affected. Do not use the headset where itcan endanger your safety.

When connecting any external device or any headset, otherthan those approved by Nokia for use with this device, tothe Nokia AV Connector, pay special attention to volumelevels.

Do not connect products that create an output signal asthis may cause damage to the device. Do not connect anyvoltage source to the Nokia AV Connector.

Access codesThe security code helps to protect your phone againstunauthorised use. The preset code is 12345. You can createand change the code, and set the phone to request thecode. Keep the code secret and in a safe place separatefrom your phone. If you forget the code and your phone is

locked, your phone will require service and additionalcharges may apply. For more information, contact a NokiaCare point or your phone dealer.

The PIN code supplied with the SIM card protects the cardagainst unauthorised use. The PIN2 code supplied withsome SIM cards is required to access certain services. If youenter the PIN or PIN2 code incorrectly three times insuccession, you are asked for the PUK or PUK2 code. If youdo not have them, contact your service provider.

The module PIN is required to access the information in thesecurity module of your SIM card. The signing PIN may berequired for the digital signature. The barring password isrequired when using the call barring service.

To set how your phone uses the access codes and securitysettings, select Menu > Settings > Security.

Switch on and offPress and hold the power key.

Standby modeWhen the phone is ready for use, and you have not enteredany characters, the phone is in the standby mode.

The left selection key, Go to, allows you to access thefunctions in your personal shortcut list. When viewing thelist, select Options > Select options to view the availablefunctions, or select Options > Organise to arrange thefunctions in your shortcut list.

Keypad lock

Lock the keypadClose the slide, and select Lock within 5 seconds to lock thekeypad.

Unlock the keypadSelect Unlock > OK, or open the slide. If the securitykeyguard is activated, enter the security code whenrequested.

Set automatic keypad lockSelect Menu > Settings > Phone > Automatickeyguard > On, and set the length of time, after whichthe keypad locks.

Answer a call when the keypad is lockedPress the call key. When you end or reject the call, thekeypad locks automatically.

When the device or keypad is locked, calls may be possibleto the official emergency number programmed into yourdevice.

Functions without a SIM cardSome functions of your phone may be used withoutinserting a SIM card, such as Organiser functions andgames. Some functions appear dimmed in the menus andcannot be used.

Make and answer a call

Make a callEnter the phone number, including the country and areacode if necessary, and press the call key.

Adjust the volumeDuring a phone call, scroll up or down.

LoudspeakerIf available, you may select Loudsp. or Normal to use theloudspeaker or the earpiece of the phone during a call.

Dialling shortcuts

Assign a phone number to a number keySelect Menu > Contacts > Speed dials, scroll to a desirednumber (2-9), and select Assign. Enter the desired phonenumber, or select Search and a saved contact.

Activate speed diallingSelect Menu > Settings > Call > Speed dialling > On.

Make a call using speed diallingIn the standby mode, press and hold the desired numberkey.

Write text

Text modesTo enter text (for example, when writing messages) youcan use traditional or predictive text input.

When you write text, press and hold Options to switchbetween traditional text input, indicated by , andpredictive text input, indicated by . Not all languagesare supported by predictive text input.

The character cases are indicated by , , and .

To change the character case, press #. To change from theletter to number mode, indicated by , press and hold#, and select Number mode. To change from the numberto the letter mode, press and hold #.

To set the writing language, select Options > Writinglanguage.

Traditional text inputPress a number key, 2-9, repeatedly until the desiredcharacter appears. The available characters depend on theselected writing language.

If the next letter you want is located on the same key asthe present one, wait until the cursor appears, and enterthe letter.

To access the most common punctuation marks and specialcharacters, press 1 repeatedly. To access the list of specialcharacters, press *.

Predictive text inputPredictive text input is based on a built-in dictionary towhich you can also add new words.

1 Start writing a word, using the keys 2 to 9. Press eachkey only once for one letter.

2 To confirm a word, scroll right or add a space.

• If the word is not correct, press * repeatedly, andselect the word from the list.

• If the ? character is displayed after the word, theword you intended to write is not in the dictionary.To add the word to the dictionary, select Spell.Enter the word using traditional text input, andselect Save.

• To write compound words, enter the first part ofthe word, and scroll right to confirm it. Write thelast part of the word, and confirm the word.

Navigate the menus

The phone functions are grouped into menus. Not all menufunctions or option items are described here.

In the standby mode, select Menu and the desired menuand submenu. Select Exit or Back to exit the current levelof menu. Press the end key to return to the standby modedirectly. To change the menu view, select Menu >Options > Main menu view.

Messaging

You can read, write, send, and save text, multimedia,audio, and flash messages, and e-mail. The messagingservices can only be used if your network or serviceprovider supports them.

Text and multimedia messagesYou can create a message and optionally attach, forexample, a picture. Your phone automatically changes atext message to a multimedia message when a file isattached.

Text messagesYour device supports text messages beyond the limit for asingle message. Longer messages are sent as two or moremessages. Your service provider may charge accordingly.Characters with accents, other marks, or some languageoptions take more space, and limit the number ofcharacters that can be sent in a single message.

The total number of characters left and the number ofmessages needed for sending are displayed.

To send messages, the correct message centre numbermust be stored in your device. Normally, this number is setby default through your SIM card. To set the numbermanually, select Menu > Messaging > Messagesettings > Text messages > Message centres > Addcentre, and enter a name and the number from the serviceprovider.

Multimedia messagesA multimedia message can contain text, pictures, andsound or video clips.

Only devices that have compatible features can receive anddisplay multimedia messages. The appearance of amessage may vary depending on the receiving device.

The wireless network may limit the size of MMS messages.If the inserted picture exceeds this limit, the device maymake it smaller so that it can be sent by MMS.

Important: Exercise caution when opening messages.Messages may contain malicious software or otherwise beharmful to your device or PC.

For availability and subscription to the multimediamessaging service (MMS), contact your service provider.You may also download the configuration settings.

Create a text or multimedia message1 Select Menu > Messaging > Create message >

Message.2 To add recipients, scroll to the To: field, and enter the

recipient’s number or e-mail address, or select Add toselect recipients from the available options. SelectOptions to add recipients and subjects and to setsending options.

3 Scroll to the Text: field, and enter the message text.4 To attach content to the message, scroll to the

attachment bar at the bottom of the display and selectthe desired type of content.

Flash messagesFlash messages are text messages that are instantlydisplayed upon reception.

1 To write a flash message, select Menu >Messaging > Create message > Flash message.

2 Enter the recipient’s phone number, write yourmessage (maximum 70 characters), and select Send.

The message type is indicated at the top of the display andchanges automatically depending on the content of themessage.

Service providers may charge differently depending on themessage type. Check with your service provider for details.

E-mailAccess your POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail account with your deviceto read, write, and send e-mail. Using the e-mailapplication to send an e-mail is not the same as sendingan e-mail as a text message.

select Add to retrieve a number.4 To send the message, select Send.

Nokia Xpress audio messagesCreate and send an audio message using MMS in aconvenient way.

1 Select Menu > Messaging > Create message >Audio message. The voice recorder opens.

Instant messagingWith instant messaging (IM, network service) you can sendshort text messages to online users. You must subscribe toa service and register with the IM service you want to use.Check the availability of this service, pricing, andinstructions with your service provider. The menus mayvary depending on your IM provider.

Access the e-mail applicationSelect Menu > Messaging > E-mail.

Important: Exercise caution when opening messages.Messages may contain malicious software or otherwise beharmful to your device or PC.

Before you can use e-mail, you must have an e-mailaccount and the correct settings. To check the availabilityand the settings of your e-mail account, contact your e-mail service provider. You may receive the e-mailconfiguration settings as a configuration message.

To connect to the service, select Menu > Messaging >Instant messages and follow the instructions on thedisplay.

Voice messagesThe voice mailbox is a network service to which you mayneed to subscribe. For more information, contact yourservice provider.

Call your voice mailboxPress and hold 1.

Edit voice mailbox numberSelect Menu > Messaging > Voice messages > Voicemailbox number.

Message settingsSelect Menu > Messaging > Message settings and fromthe following:

General settings — to save copies of sent messages inyour phone, to overwrite old messages if the messagememory becomes full, and to set up other preferencesrelated to messages

Contacts

Select Menu > Contacts.

You can save names and phone numbers in the phonememory and SIM card memory. In the phone memory, youcan save contacts with numbers and text items. Names andnumbers saved in the SIM card memory are indicated with

.

Add a contactSelect Names > Options > Add new contact.

Add details to a contactEnsure that the memory in use is either Phone or Phoneand SIM. Select Names, scroll to the name, and selectDetails > Options > Add detail.

Search for a contactSelect Names, and scroll through the list of contacts, orenter the first letters of the name.

Copy a contact between the phone memory and SIMcard memorySelect Names, scroll to the contact, and select Options >Copy contact. In the SIM card memory, you can save onlyone phone number for each name.

To select the SIM card or phone memory for your contacts,to select how the names and numbers in the contacts listare displayed, and to view the memory capacity forcontacts, select Settings.

You can send and receive a person's contact informationas a business card from a compatible device that supportsthe vCard standard.

Send a business cardSelect Names, search for the contact whose informationyou want to send, and select Details > Options > Sendbus. card.

To view the information on your calls, messages, data, andsynchronisation, select Menu > Log and from theavailable options.

Note: The actual invoice for calls and services from yourservice provider may vary, depending on network features,rounding off for billing, taxes, and so forth.

Settings

ProfilesYour phone has various setting groups called profiles,which you can customise with ringing tones for differentevents and environments.

Select Menu > Settings > Profiles, the desired profile,and from the following options:Activate — to activate the selected profilePersonalise — to change the profile settingsTimed — to set the profile to be active for a certain time.When the time set for the profile expires, the previousprofile that was not timed becomes active.

TonesYou can change the tone settings of the selected activeprofile.

Select Menu > Settings > Tones. You can find the samesettings in the Profiles menu.

DisplayTo view or adjust the wallpaper, font size, or other featuresrelated to the phone display, select Menu > Settings >Display.

Synchronisation and backupSelect Menu > Settings > Sync and backup and from thefollowing:

Data transfer — Synchronise or copy selected databetween your device and a network server (networkservice).

ConnectivityPacket dataGeneral packet radio service (GPRS) is a network servicethat allows mobile phones to send and receive data overan internet protocol (IP)-based network.

Divert incoming callsSelect Call divert (network service). For details, contactyour service provider.

AccessoriesThis menu and its various options are shown only if thephone is or has been connected to a compatible mobileaccessory.

Select Menu > Settings > Enhancements. Select anaccessory, and an option depending on the accessory.

Configuration You can configure your phone with settings that arerequired for certain services. Your service provider mayalso send you these settings.

Select Menu > Settings > Configuration and from thefollowing options:Default configu ration settings — to view the serviceproviders saved in the phone and set a default serviceproviderActivate default in all applications — to activate thedefault configuration settings for supported applicationsPreferred access point — to view the saved access pointsDevice manager settings — to allow or prevent thephone from receiving software updates. This option maynot be available, depending on your phone.Personal configu ration settings — to manually addnew personal accounts for various services and to activateor delete them. To add a new personal account, select Addnew or Options > Add new. Select the service type, andenter the required parameters. To activate a personalaccount, scroll to it, and select Options > Activate.

Camera and videoYour device supports an image capture resolution of480x640 pixels.

Camera mode

Use the still image functionSelect Menu > Media > Camera.

Zoom in or outScroll up or down.

Capture an imageSelect Capture.

Set the preview mode and timeSelect Options > Settings > Image preview time.

To activate the self-timer, or to capture images in a fastsequence, select Options and the desired option.

Video mode

Use the video functionSelect Menu > Media > Video.

Start recording a video clipSelect Record.

When recording, lower quality video can be recorded for agreater length of time. To change the quality settings, andto set the maximum length of the video clip, selectMenu > Media > Camera > Options > Settings > Videoclip quality or Video clip length.

Switch between camera and video mode

In camera or video mode, scroll left or right.

FM radioThe FM radio depends on an antenna other than thewireless device antenna. A compatible headset oraccessory needs to be attached to the device for the FMradio to function properly.

Switch between saved stationsScroll left or right to switch between stations, or press thecorresponding number key of the memory location of adesired station.

Music playerYour phone includes a music player for listening to songsor other MP3 or AAC sound files.

Your phone software may include some games and Java™applications specially designed for this Nokia phone.

Select Menu > Applications.

Open a game or applicationSelect Games or Collection. Scroll to a game or application,and select Open.

The battery can be charged anddischarged hundreds of times, but it willeventually wear out. When the talk andstandby times are noticeably shorterthan normal, replace the battery. Useonly Nokia approved batteries, andrecharge your battery only with Nokiaapproved chargers designated for thisdevice.

If a battery is being used for the firsttime or if the battery has not been usedfor a prolonged period, it may benecessary to connect the charger, thendisconnect and reconnect it to begincharging the battery. If the battery iscompletely discharged, it may takeseveral minutes before the chargingindicator appears on the display orbefore any calls can be made.

Safe removal. Always switch the deviceoff and disconnect the charger beforeremoving the battery.

Proper charging. Unplug the chargerfrom the electrical plug and the devicewhen not in use. Do not leave a fullycharged battery connected to a charger,

since overcharging may shorten itslifetime. If left unused, a fully chargedbattery will lose its charge over time.

Avoid extreme temperatures. Always tryto keep the battery between 15°C and25°C (59°F and 77°F). Extremetemperatures reduce the capacity andlifetime of the battery. A device with ahot or cold battery may not worktemporarily. Battery performance isparticularly limited in temperatureswell below freezing.

Do not short-circuit. Accidental short-circuiting can occur when a metallicobject such as a coin, clip, or pen causesdirect connection of the positive (+) andnegative (-) terminals of the battery.(These look like metal strips on thebattery.) This might happen, forexample, when you carry a spare batteryin your pocket or purse. Short-circuitingthe terminals may damage the batteryor the connecting object.

Disposal. Do not dispose of batteries ina fire as they may explode. Dispose ofbatteries according to local regulations.Please recycle when possible. Do notdispose as household waste.

Leak. Do not dismantle, cut, open, crush,bend, puncture, or shred cells orbatteries. In the event of a battery leak,prevent battery liquid contact with skinor eyes. If this happens, flush theaffected areas immediately with water,or seek medical help.

Damage. Do not modify, remanufacture,attempt to insert foreign objects intothe battery, or immerse or expose it towater or other liquids. Batteries mayexplode if damaged.

Correct use. Use the battery only for itsintended purpose. Improper battery usemay result in a fire, explosion, or otherhazard. If the device or battery isdropped, especially on a hard surface,and you believe the battery has beendamaged, take it to a service centre forinspection before continuing to use it.Never use any charger or battery that isdamaged. Keep your battery out of thereach of small children.

Taking care of your deviceYour device is a product of superiordesign and craftsmanship and should betreated with care. The followingsuggestions will help you protect yourwarranty coverage.

Limitation of Nokia's liabilityThis Limited Warranty is your sole andexclusive remedy against Nokia andNokia's sole and exclusive liability inrespect of defects in your Product.However, this Limited Warranty shallneither exclude nor limit i) any of your

legal (statutory) rights under theapplicable national laws or ii) any ofyour rights against the seller of theProduct.
