Many objects and elements which make up noir are extremely recognisable and iconic. The following presentation presents the most common and, using Sin City as a case study, where they are used in film.

Monochrome filters

The above screenshot shows a perfect example of ‘black and white’. It adds to the atmosphere of the piece indicating that there is no hope, love or prosperity to come of the situation. I used this particular filter in the majority of my editing . The black and white made the photos I took as part of my Nor shoot more iconic and recognisable.

Femme Fatale

Often associated with lust and danger , the femme fetale is often a key element of noir. She is often the temptation of the antihero getting him into trouble. Often the femme fetale is attached to the main antagonist someway.

Above you can see my take on a femme fatale in my noir shoot. Using weapons in the photo allowed me to portray the stereotype of the danger in which is connected to the femme Fatale

Mood lighting

Used in conjunction with black and white in Sin City it reinforces the mood of the scene and it can hide key characters and their facial expressions.

Smoking and alcohol

The use of the stated substances reinforces the idea of pleasure and danger. Some-times in noir they are the source points of violence and conflict. I took this piece of iconography in the picture centred and it changes the mood and tone of the scene considerably.
