Introduction

British Rowing is committed to ensuring that rowing is an accessible sport which providesopportunities for enjoyment and achievement at all levels. To better achieve this goal,British Rowing understands the need to expand these opportunities to include all types ofsea rowing.

World Rowing has been supporting the growth of coastal boat based competitions, providing two formats - Endurance (Offshore) and Beach Sprint. British Rowing’s Rules ofRacing Offshore event uses three boats classes, solo (C1x), double (C2x) and coxedquadruple sculls (C4x+), whilst the Beach Sprint event has two; solo (C1x) and double(C2x).

The Offshore format is a race of 4-6km around turning points, with or without a beach startand finish.

With this in mind, British Rowing is continuing to develop the Offshore Championshipsevent that will provide a pathway progression from the in-country offshore competitions tothe World Rowing Coastal Championships. This also includes supporting the developmentof the format of racing including rules, event organisers, umpires etc.

Sadly the 2019 British Rowing Offshore Championships were cancelled due to adverseweather and the 2020 Championships were cancelled due to the global pandemic,COVID-19.

The rescheduled 2020 World Rowing Coastal Championships will be held in Oerias,Portugal in October 2021. Saundersfoot in Pembrokeshire, Wales will host the WorldRowing Coastal Championships from 7-9 October 2022.
