Mohammed Yunus

• In 2006 the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Grameen Bank and its founder Mohammed Yunus. Born and raised in Chittagong, Mohammed Yunus was a professor of economics at Chittagong University when he realized the power small loans could have on poor communities. His first loan was $27 USD given from his own pocket to the women of a local village. Yunus continued to provide loans on a larger and larger scale until Grameen Bank was incorporated in 1983. Grameen Bank focuses on micro lending and has lent billions of dollars to millions of borrowers throughout the country, the majority of whom are women. The micro-credit model has inspired similar efforts in over 100 countries around the world even before its recognition by the Nobel Committee.
