Mesh refinement study showed that this maximum stress exhibits singularity behavior cannot be accurately evaluated through mesh refinement, however since the material is linear-elastic, equivalent stress is plotted along the load path as seen in Figure 6.

Equivalent stress results are extracted and plotted in Excel. Fitting a line to the data prior to the elbow and reading the y-intercept yields the real stress at this location.

As Figure 7 indicates, the maximum stress is 37.1 MPa at this location. In reality, this location has a fillet weld. Shigley suggests a permissilbe tensile stress in a butt weld as 0.60*YieldStrength, this strength de-rating will be applied here

despite the fact the this is a fillet weld (however it is in tension, hence the use of Shigley’s guideline). The persmissible stress is then 213 MPa. The 4-pt lifting beam has a factor of safety equal to 5.7 against material yield strength and 13.2 against material failure. LBNL PUB3000 requirements indicate a factor of safety > 5 against material ultimate strength, thus the fixture design meets LBNL requirements. The 4pt lifting beam is load rated to 1984 lbs. It has been load test to slightly more than 2X this weight, 4210 lbs. Please note that during this test, the M16 hoist ring on the top of the 4pt beam lifting fixture experienced a load condition that exceeds its rated load. Both this hoist ring and its mating bolt are being replaced with new hardware.
