From the editorsur dear readers,

2018 has gone by and another new year has begun. The last three months of 2018witnessed a number of large-scale and outstanding events and activities of ULIS, including organization of the 60 years' anniversary of the establishment of the Faculty of English and the 40 years' anniversary of the establishment of the In-service Department; commencement for graduate students; organization of culture and language days such as Korean Cultural Festival, Arabic language International day; organization of big conferences such as The 2018 InternationalGraduate Research Symposium, the International Conference on “Teaching andlearning foreign languages associated with subject-matter content in the context ofinternational integration: Theory and practice.”; and signing MOU with local authorities.

At the beginning of 2019, the University will be organizing a number of major activities such as ULIS Job Fair 2019, Lunar new year 2019, ULIS Teambuildingday, F.I.R.E 2019, etc.

Reflecting prominent achievements of the University with pride and gratitude towards the endless dedication and endeavors of each and every one in ULIS, aswell as the support from our honorable partners, ULIS would like to extend its bestwishes towards all those individuals and institutions.

Prominent activities of ULIS’s leadersCooperation with Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts (Japan) cemented

he relationship between the two institutions would benefit since Asia is

the major focus of the College.On October 25th, 2018, ULIS-VNU had a meeting withthe delegation of Doshisha Women’s College of LiberalArts (Japan) to discuss further cooperation.

Potential cooperation opportunities such asstudent exchange, short-term courses, and research collaboration were high on the meeting’sagenda.

Delivering his speech at the meeting, President DoTuan Minh extended his thanks towards the delegationof the counterpart for coming to ULIS. He emphasizedthat there were a lot of common features between thetwo institutions.

He hoped to welcome students of the College to cometo ULIS as ULIS had sent 3 students over to studythere.

Mr. Kaga Hirou expressed his privilege toreceive such warm reception from ULIS.He shared about the development strategy of the College which takes Asiaas the main focus. Therefore, the relationship between the two institutionswould benefit considerably.

Meeting with the delegation from English LanguageInstitute (ELI), USA

“ nglish language teachers with high professional expertise, rich

life experiences, and good moralsfrom the English Language Institutewill come to teach at ULIS.”

The President highly appreciated the professionalism and competence of the teachersthat ELI had sent to the University so far. ThePresident wished to cooperate with ELI in activities such as assisting young teachers or participating in the “Lang Son” and “Thanh Hoa”programs that the University had been implementing.

About ELI, Collin Quingley said, “ELI has a globalpresence and is always looking for the best English language teachers in countries where English is the native language. The English Language Institute has collaborated with manymajor universities in Vietnam and is expected tosend more native teachers to Vietnam in the future, ULIS is definitely one of the institutions ELIgives priority to.“

He affirmed, “This is a very valuable opportunitythat the University has given to ELI. Native English language teachers from ELI who come toULIS will have high professional expertise, richlife experiences, and good morals.”

On November 7th, 2018, ULIS welcomed thedelegation of ELI to discuss the faculty exchange program for the next school year.

Delivering his remarks at the meeting, PresidentDo Tuan Minh stated that the University alwayswelcomed native teachers, especially thosefrom ELI.

Training cooperation accords between ULIS and LangSon, and Thanh Hoa Departments of Education andTraining signed

ccording to the cooperation agreement, ULIS and Lang Son, and ThanhHoa Departments of Education and Training will collaborate in training

and enhancing foreign language teaching quality for local teachers and foreign language learning for local students as well.

At the signing ceremony with Lang Son Departmentof Education and Training, ULIS’s President Do TuanMinh affirmed, “The University will pay great attention to the Program. All members of the University will work side-by-side with the local authorities to realize the aspiration to boost the English language proficiency amongst teachers andstudents in Lang Son”.

Cooperation with the Center for Continuing Education of Vinh Phuc established

he University will pay more attention to assisting

localities, meeting social needs,which are among its key activities,and the Center for Continuing Education of Vinh Phuc is an important partner.

On November 11th, 2018, ULIS-VNU signed a cooperation accord with the Center for ContinuingEducation of Vinh Phuc.

At the ceremony, President Do Tuan Minh and Director Le Anh Cuong signed the memorandumof understanding. Accordingly, ULIS and theCenter for Continuing Education of Vinh Phucunanimously cooperated in such areas as training and fostering knowledge; organizing student exchange, seminars, conferences; sharing experiences and scientific research. Theagreement is valid for 5 years.

President Do Tuan Minh affirmed that the direction ofthe University in the coming time was to pay more attention to assisting localities.

A These programs aim at improving the English teaching and learning quality of high schools’ English teachers and students in Lang Son and Thanh Hoa.

According to the accords, the University will organize various activities to improve theteaching quality for over 100 teachers and enhance the ability of learning foreign languagesfor thousands of students from 15 local high schools in different districts in Lang Son andThanh Hoa. Furthermore, the teachers will be trained under a new model in a practical environment.

Besides, extending his thanks towards Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training Office,President Do Tuan Minh affirmed that the University would try its best when implementing this Program to support the province in teaching and learning foreign languages.

Cooperation with the Overseas Manpower Development Organization (Japan) established

hrough the MOU signed with the Overseas Manpower

Development Organization(Japan), ULIS’s students, especially ones who do not majorin the Japanese language, havebeen offered opportunities to attend internship programs inJapan.

On November 21st 2018, ULIS – VNU held the signing ceremony of MOU with the Overseas Manpower Development Organization (Japan)(OMDO).

Representatives from both sides signed the officialMOU at the ceremony. The MOU between ULIS andOMDO focuses on organizing internship programs inJapan. By participating in this program, students canlearn Japanese language, culture, and customs. Moreover, they will be assisted in finding graduatecourses and jobs in Japan upon graduation.

Addressing at the signing ceremony, President DoTuan Minh affirmed that the University wished to create opportunities for students to maximize theiroverseas experience and studies.

Cooperation agreementwith Aomori ChuoGakuin University(Japan) signed

n December 5th, 2018, ULIS-VNU welcomed and signed a

cooperation agreement with AomoriChuo Gakuin University (Japan).

Cooperation agreementwith Wuzhou Academy(China) signed

n December 18th, 2018, ULIS-VNU signed a bilateral cooperation

agreement with Wuzhou Academy,China.

The signing ceremony between ULIS – VNUand Aomori Chuo Gakuin University (Japan)aims at granting Scholarships to Japanese language learners of FLSS’s to study in Japan.

Delivering her remarks, Vice President NgoMinh Thuy greeted the delegates of AomoriChuo Gakuin University and expressed herhappiness when the cooperation between thetwo schools was raised to a higher level.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Vice President Nguyen Xuan Long expressed hishappiness and high expectation for the cooperation activities between the two institutions after the signing ceremony asWuzhou Academy would become an ideal destination for ULIS’s students. Meanwhile,ULIS would welcome staff and students fromthe Academy to the University.

Prominent activities of the UniversityInternational Conference on “New advances in teaching Korean language and culture in Vietnam”

he Conference attracted 80 representatives from different education institutions in Vietnam, Korea, and others with various fantastic papers

presented.On October 24th to 25th, 2018, ULIS-VNU in association with Korea Foundation and Korean Research Association in Vietnam held an international conference under the theme “New advances in teaching Korean language and culture in Vietnam”.

Delivering his speech at the event, President DoTuan Minh said, “There are roughly 25 education institutions in Vietnam offering Korean languagecourses. Amongst those universities, ULIS has beenoffering the course in Korean language and culturefor 24 years now. The University is privileged andproud to be one of the pioneers to launch the firstMaster course on Korean language and culture. Thisevent means that the University has established aneducational system of Korean language and culturefrom high school to graduate levels. Currently, over1500 students are doing courses in Korean language and culture at different levels in ULIS.”

International GraduateResearch Symposium(IGRS) 2018

On October 26th, 2018, ULIS-VNU organized thesecond international graduate research symposium for graduate students to share research results and academic achievements,and update their knowledge.

Delivering his opening remarks, Vice PresidentLam Quang Dong said, “IGRS is an academicforum where graduate students can enjoy betteraccess to research issues, pilot new ideas andapply theories to practical research projects.”

At the Symposium, 2 plenary papers were presented by Prof. Raqib Chowdhury fromMonash and Prof. Rosemary Orlando fromSouthern New Hampshire University.

Later, the particpants joined parallel sessions at 7panels where over 56 papers were presented.

Also, the launch of the first Master’s course on Korean language and culture at ULIS-VNUis a remarkable moment for ULIS as it is the first institution to offer such a master course inVietnam.

ver the course of 40 years, the Faculty of Language Education & Professional Development has overcome countless difficulties and

challenges, especially in the early stages. However, with the determinationand efforts of all generations, the Faculty of Language Education & Professional Development has been keeping on track and promoting what thefirst generation had achieved in addition to constant changes to meet the educational needs of the new era.

40th anniversary of the establishment of the Facultyof Language Education & Professional Development

On November 3rd, 2018, ULIS-VNU celebrated the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Faculty of Language Education & Professional Development (formerly known asFaculty for In-service Training) under the theme “Follow previous generations’ footsteps”.

At the ceremony, the Faculty of Language Education & Professional Development was honored to receive the “Emulation Flag of the Ministry of Education and Training” foroutstanding achievements in the emulation movement “Innovation and creativity in teaching and learning” in the2017-2018 school year.

Collective activities of ULIS’s officals, staff, and lecturers

he victory of this year's Men's Football Championship is also the victory in the spiritual and cultural fronts in addition to ULIS achievements in training, scientific research, and

social services. All of those have contributed to promoting ULIS traditions.Also, ULIS won a first and a second prize forthe best performances on the VNU TradeUnion Music Festival 2018.

Furthermore, ULIS student’s football team(also known as S.H.U) secured the runner-upposition on the VNU CUP for students.

In addition, other prominent activities wereorganized over the last 3 months such as,ULIS women’s football tournament, celebration of the Vietnamese Teachers’ day,celebration of the Vietnamese Women’s day,seminar on “The roles of female leaders inthe development of ULIS – VNU”, etc.

These activities have helped teachers andstaff of the University to meet, interact,share, and learn about others and the University itself.

The 60th anniversary of the Faculty of English: Pridein Traditions, Confidence in Future

On November 18th, 2018, ULIS-VNU solemnly celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment ofthe Faculty of English (1958 – 2018).

Delivering his remarks at the event, President Do TuanMinh shared his happiness and pride in the tradition ofone of the leading foreign language training institutes inVietnam.

After that, the Faculty of English Language Teacher Education, Faculty of English, and Faculty of

t the ceremony, all generations of members and students of the Faculty gathered together to take a journey on “the train of memory” over the

60-year history of the Faculty from its inception. Everyone was immersed in aloving atmosphere, and filled with emotions when seeing their teachers andfriends who had been companions on that “memory” journey.

Successfully organized 3 National English Olympiadcontests

n the fourth quarter of 2018, ULIS - VNU successfully organized 3 NationalEnglish Olympiad Final showdowns. Those are English Olympiad for

non-English major students, ‘Pro-E Contest 2018’ (on December 9th); EnglishOlympiad for English major students (on November 30th); and National English Speaking Contest 2018 (on November 2nd).The 3 competitions drew a large number ofstudents from all over the country with hundreds of entries.

In previous years, the school had organized anumber of similar competitions but this is thefirst time ULIS - VNU was assigned by the National Foreign Language Project, MOET to organize all the 3 major competitions.

Professional and thoughtful organization, and high quality of candidates were what the University delivered throughout.

Opening ceremony of the cooperation office betweenVNU and the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU)

n December 10th, 2018, the opening ceremony of the cooperation office between VNU and FEFU was held at ULIS.

The opening of the cooperation office at ULISis part of the cooperation agreement betweenVNU and FEFU. This is the basis for the development of cooperation between the twouniversities in areas such as internships, dissemination of culture, and student exchange. As planned, VNU will also open anoffice at FEFU in the near future.

President Do Tuan Minh affirmed that the University would make every effort to help theoffice to become a familiar place with the member universities, faculties, and researchinstitutes of VNU’s.

Also, at the ceremony, VNU’s PresidentNguyen Kim Son, FEFU’s President NikitaAnisimov, and President Do Tuan Minhsnipped the ribbon to officially open the cooperation office between VNU and FEFU.The office is located on the 4th floor, Block A1,ULIS.

Self-study space of ULIS’s students in placen December 20th, 2018, on the 2nd floor of the sports complex, the handover ceremony of self-study space of ULIS’s students took place.

Speaking at the ceremony, PresidentDo Tuan Minh saidthat the self-studyspace was part of theplan of the Universityto create a learningplace for students sothat they could develop their creativities, express responsibility, andconnect with the community.

ULIS’s Youth Union and Students’ Association honored for achievement in the previous academicyear

outh Union of ULIS - VNU honored to receive Emulation Flag for excellent units for 3 consecutive years and Certificate of Merit from the Central

Youth Union, and Emulation Flag of Hanoi Youth Union for excellent units inthe 2017-2018 academic year.Additionally, ULIS’s Students' Associationwas honored to receive the Certificate ofMerit from the Vietnamese Central Students' Association for its outstanding achievementsin the Association's work and students’movement in the past year.

Besides, a number of other groups and individuals of the University were honoredfor achievements in the past year.

Italian language classes forULIS’s staff and lecturers officially launched

s planned, upon completion of this Italian course, ULIS’s staff

and lecturers whose Italian proficiency has reached Level B2 willenjoy priority if they wish to secure scholarships for pursuing Master programs on the Italian languageoverseas. Also, Italian will be offeredas a major at ULIS, the plan says.

The Italian classes are part of ULIS’s strategyto offer more languages as majors at the University, and to boost foreign language teaching activities in a period of 7 years from2018 to 2025 and vision to 2035.

2018 graduate courcesopened, and M.A and PhDdegrees conferred

part from the graduation of 9 doctors and 113 masters, 10

doctoral students and 142 Master’sstudents were admitted to the University this academic year.Particularly, 6 graduate students of the Master course associated with Leipzig University (Germany) were admitted, and 13 graduate students admitted to the master course in Korean Language Studies, the first program inVietnam, in which 3 international students fromGermany, Korea, and Laos have been admitted.

Vietnamese Language and Culture course for JCFL’sstudents in 2018

t the ceremony, 30 students from JCFL received certificates of completion of the Vietnamese language and culture course and 16 ULIS’s voluntary

students were presented with certificates of participation.Delivering his speech at the ceremony, President Do Tuan Minh congratulated 30JCFL’s students who had completed thecourse on Vietnamese language and culture.The experience may have been different but the President believed that all ofthem had had a meaningful and interestingtime at ULIS as well as in Vietnam.

Celebration of the Korean Cultural Festival at ULIS he festival features many exciting cultural and artistic activities such as performances, scholarships presented to students, talk show with alumni

and businesses, camping, exhibitions, etc.On November 11th, 2018, ULIS-VNU organized the KoreanCultural Day 2018. The event was co-organized by the Faculty of Korean Language and Culture, ULIS’s alumni,and Korean business organizations.

Delivering his opening speech, Vice President Lam QuangDong said “With the tradition of teaching Korean languageand culture for 24 years now, ULIS – VNU is now one of theleading universities in Vietnam, with many alumni assuming important positions in government agencies andKorean businesses. The festival is an opportunity for generations of students of the Faculty to return home andan opportunity for the generations of Korean sonbe – hubeto meet, interact, and enjoy the Festival.”

2018 Job Fair of the Faculty of Japanese Languageand Culture

he 2018 Job Fair of the Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture tookplace in a vibrant atmosphere with the participation of more than 800

students with positive feedback from employers and students.On November 17th, 2018, the 2018 Job Fair of the Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture took placeat ULIS-VNU.

After two years of pause, on the occasion of the 45thanniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationsbetween Vietnam and Japan, the Job Fair of the Facultyof Japanese Language and Culture was organized tocreate opportunities for exchanges between enterprisesand students; between training units and human resource units.

Administration training for ULIS’s staff in Japano implement a plan of staff training on university administration, on November 21st to 29th, 2018, ULIS – VNU organized a study tour to Japan

for ULIS’s staff. This is the third study tour held in the last two years and thesecond trip to Japan with the participation of 10 delegates.During their stay in Japan, the delegation worked,visited a number of famous universities, and interacted with students, and visited famous actractions.

The 3rd International Scientific Conference on Chinese Language Teaching in the Chinese culturalarea

n December 7th & 8th, 2018, the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture, ULIS-VNU co-hosted the 3rd International Scientific Conference on

“Teaching Chinese Language in Chinese Cultural area” with funding fromSunwah Foundation and Hanban Chinese Foundation.

Delivering his remarks at the conference, Vice President Lam Quang Dong said that under the topic‘Teaching Chinese Language in association with thedevelopment of culture and language in the ChineseCultural Area’, the conference conveyed the message: ‘Researching, inheriting and building uponthe linguistic and cultural factors will create a solidfoundation for the sustainable integration’. The conference this year received 132 dedicated andcomprehensive papers of 150 delegates from 8 countries and territories around the world.

Successfully organized English Day and Sound of theWorld 2018 music festival

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice President NgoMinh Thuy shared, “The University was honored to beassigned the task from the National Foreign Language Project to co-organize this program. I wouldlike to express my thanks for the support of 111 educational institutions, and wish all the students thebest outcome and good experiences”.

Apart from enjoying 15 performances, the studentscould find interesting items and information at 17booths of different educational institutions and sponsors.

Celebration of the International Day of Arabic Language 2018 at ULIS held

n the occasion of the International Day of Arabic Language, ULIS – VNU organized the International Arabic Language Day 2018 at Sunwah Hall.

Delivering his opening speech, President Do Tuan Minhshared the role and mission of the University in the development of Arabic language and culture in Vietnam. Therefore, ULIS has decided to celebrate theInternational Day of Arabic Language.

Seminar of the major national level research project -part of the Northwest Program held

n December 20th, 2018, ULIS – VNU organized a seminar on “Summary and evaluation of the research on developing a model to improve English

and Chinese competencies for Customs, Foreign Relation, Tourism officialsand Border Guards, and proposal for deploying the model in the whole Northwest region.”

Delivering his remarks at the seminar, Vice President Lam Quang Dong expressed histhanks for the support of local authorities andDepartments so that the National Key Scienceand Technology Project had completed all thetasks and objectives.

128th AUN-QA assessment at program level at ULISecember 18th - 20th, 2018, within activities of 128 AUN - QA assessment at Program Level at VNU, ULIS welcomed AUN - QA assessors and

supported them to assess the Bachelor’s Degree Program in the fast-track English Language program – Translation and Interpretation.

During the assessment session, AUN’s team visited facilities; collected information; worked withleaders of the University, faculties and functionalunits; and interviewed lecturers, alumni and employers; etc.

Key tasks in the first quarter of 2019

1. Completion of products of the major national levelresearch project - part of the Northwest Program;

2. Implementation of communicative work and enrollment advice at all training levels in 2019;

3. Organization of prominent events such as ULIS JobFair on January 9th, 2019; 2018 year-end conferenceon January 25th, 2019; ULIS Teambuilding Day onMarch 8th, 2019; and F.I.R.E 2019 on March 26th,2019;

4. Organization of seminars on revovating teachingqualities, supplementary skills and learning ability;

5. Tightening of security and prevention of fire andexplosion during the Lunar New Year Holidays 2019;

6. All ULIS faculty, staff, and officials to receive generous care and handsome gifts for the Lunar NewYear Holidays 2019.

Development & Cooperation: intensification of international cooperation in foreign language education and assessment; renovation of measures ofteacher development; increase the number of international students at the University; and creationof opportunities for students to study abroad in bothshort-term and long-term programs;

5. Facilities - Equipment: effective use of facilitiesand equipment so as to better major activities suchas scientific research, training, and cooperation & development;

6. University administration: implementation of supplementary programs for lecturers and staff of theUniversity.
