Regional co-operation and capacity building for building

knowledge-based societies in the Arab region

States such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE with major educational initiatives

should coordinate and develop national capabilities and regional competitiveness in

science and technology.

Identify economically important and regionally relevant research areas to focus on

Regional funding schemes similar to the framework programs developed by the

European Union that support research and address common challenges and

opportunities.

Regional diabetes research center to tackle the high prevalence of diabetes in

the region

State-of-the-art energy research and development center because of the

region's vast energy resources.

Link local and regional institutions to international networks and funding schemes

The international research community should support the MENA countries to

advance progress through science and technology.

Take home messages

The state of underdevelopment in the Arab countries can not be justified based on national GDP

Reforming the educational system and building world class universities and centers of excellence is essential for economic development and competing in the global economy

Academic freedom is a key catalyst for innovation and entrepreneurship

Sustainable development and political stability requires investing in improving the quality of education and living standards in poor countries in the region.

Coherent strategy, common purpose, coordination and competition are all necessary elements for success in Education and Research.

All countries in the region (poor and rich) have a great deal to gain by building on existing strengths, complementary resources and capabilities, capitalizing on opportunities and investing in the next generations.

Arab Diaspora represent untapped potential that could contribute to achieving all these objectives.

A person’s performance depends on skill

and motivation / morals

Performance = Skill x Motivation/Moral

Laboratory experiments have

proved that other things being equal, performance level is higher if motivation level is higher.
