No News is Good News? Why Not Seeing BDC Headlines is a Good Sign
c h r i s o b e r b e c k
In just a few short years, the number of BDCsskyrocketed from relatively low numbers in the
early 2000s to a sizeable number today, including over 50 that are publicly traded.
In today’s BDC landscape you don’t hear much, positive or negative, from other than a few notable
names. Many non-insiders wonder why?
Is this a cause for concern?Should you reconsider your investment in a BDC?
The reason is because most BDCs don’tmake the headlines because they are doing
everything just as they are supposed to.
Answer to both questions : NO
Like any industry, there will be ebbs and flows tothe business. There are almost always going to be a
few BDCs that fail to perform even when virtuallyevery other company is booming.
But you can always find news about potentially highannual returns and thought pieces that indicate the
sector’s ability to match up with banks.
What may not be good for the headlines may bevery good for investors and the sector as a whole.
