FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
No Metrolinx funding tool has majority support Enthusiasm high only in 416
Toronto, May 29th, 2013 – In a random sampling of public opinion taken by the Forum Poll™ among 918 Ontarians 18 years of age and older, no more than about 4-in-10 approve of any of the funding tools recommended by Metrolinx on Monday, May 27TH, but approval is highest for all in the Toronto 416 area code.
Development charges, parking levy most popular
Just more than 4-in-10 in total approve of the 15% increase in development charges (42%) and a 25 cent per day regional parking levy (43%). The development charge increase is especially popular in the 416 area code (58%) but less so in southwestern Ontario (31%). The parking levy is also most popular in the 416 (51%) and least popular in the 905 area code surrounding Toronto (33%).
Gas tax and sales tax are unpopular
About one quarter approve of the 5 cent per litre gas tax (25%) or the 1% sales tax increase (27%). The gas tax is least popular in the 905 surrounding Toronto (13%), and the sales tax increase is least popular in southwestern Ontario (13%).
Even split on approval of cost to household
One half of Ontarians agree about $500 per year per household is a reasonable amount to pay to eliminate congestion and gridlock, while half think it is not reasonable (49% each). In the 905 surrounding Toronto, more think it unreasonable (58%) than think it reasonable (41%).
"We've polled Metrolinx's suggested funding tools every time they've been recommended, and we've yet to find strong support. GTHA residents see these tools as taxes, and aren't sure what they're going to get for them. Metrolinx has to do a better job of describing specific projects these funds will be used for," said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne Bozinoff.

Methodology
The Forum Poll™ was conducted by Forum Research with the results based on an interactive voice response telephone survey of 918 randomly selected residents of the GTA 18 years of age and older. The poll was conducted on May 28th, 2013.
Results based on the total sample are considered accurate +/- 3%, 19 times out of 20. Subsample results will be less accurate. Margins of error for subsample (such as age, gender) results are available at www.forumresearch.com/samplestim.asp.
Where appropriate, the data has been statistically weighted to ensure that the sample reflects the actual population according to the latest Census data.
This research is not necessarily predictive of future outcomes, but rather, captures opinion at one point in time. Forum Research conducted this poll as a public service and to demonstrate our survey research capabilities.
With offices across Canada and around the world, 100% Canadian-owned Forum Research is one of the country’s leading survey research firms. This and other polls may be found at Forum's poll archive at www.forumresearch.com/polls.asp.
