Biological filtration is the use of beneficial bacteria to eliminate organic waste compounds from a body of water.

Although there are many ways to remove excess nitrate, the most effective way is to regularly change part of the water.

mechanical filtration is the straining of solid particles from the aquarium water

common mechanical filter media do not remove microscopic bacteria and algae from the water

A good mechanical filter is one that traps enough solids to keep the water clear without plugging too often.

Rinse without soap

Install under gravel filter

Thoroughly wash gravel

Position any decorations you wish to have onto the top of the under-gravel filter, and then place the gravel into the aquarium one handful at a time.

Fill the aquarium with tap water until the level has reached the base of the black band that encircles the aquarium. Place the aquarium hood on the aquarium, and then place the aquarium light onto the hood.

Add the chemicals to the water that were included with the aquarium kit. If no chemicals were included, you will need tap water conditioner to neutralize heavy metals, chlorine and fluoride from the water prior to adding fish.

Install the aquarium heater through the hole in the back of the tank hood. Set the temperature at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and then allow the tank to mature for three to four days before adding fish. This allows time for the chemicals to take effect, as well as giving the heater plenty of time to regulate the temperature of the water.

Keeping a cloudy fish tank clear and clean involves adding an algae eater to the water, feeding the fish in appropriate amounts, cleaning the filters and using a gravel vacuum on occasion
