Kyoto Prize at Oxford –The 2017 Kyoto Prize finishes at an academic city, Oxford. In May 8-9, the 2nd Kyoto Prize at Oxford was held by inviting Dr. Mimura, Dr. Farquhar and Dr. Taruskin at University of Oxford, U.K. On May 8, the public lectures were presented at the Inamori Forum in the Blavatnik School of Government (BSG) at University of Oxford. In the lecture by Dr. Taruskin, Quartet with Piano were Performed; the participating students and researchers enjoyed their informative lectures and performance enthusiastically. The lectures were released with the affiliated overseas Universities on the live-stream basis. At the end of the lectures, not only the participants in the lecture hall, but linked Universities students in Australian National University (Australia), Tsinghua University (China), and Lagos Business School (Nigelia) raised questions a lot from their interesting directions. On May 9, the panel discussion with the laureates and BSG President Ngaire Woods as a moderator were held. Q&A was actively done among participants on and off site. Kyoto Prize at Oxford that BSG organized and managed invites the Kyoto Prize laureates to U.K. every year and holds the various programs. Please visit University of Oxford official website to see more in detail. https://www.kyotoprize.ox.ac.uk

Kyoto Prize Symposium held in the west coast of U.S.A. The annual events of Kyoto Prize Symposium (KPS) was held in San Diego on March 20-22. The presentations were made by the three 2017 Kyoto Prize laureates: Dr. Takashi Mimura (Advanced Technology), Dr. Graham Farquhar (Basic Sciences), and Dr. Richard Taruskin (Arts and Philosophy). On Mar. 20,

the charity banquet, Gala, and the opening ceremony were held by Kyoto Symposium Organization (KSO). In Gala, seven high school students from San Diego City and greater Tijuana, Mexico received scholarships to be inspired to pursue a college education. At the final stage, local musicians conducted live performance and the Gala ended under the glorious atmosphere. On Mar. 21, Dr. Mimura lectured at San Diego State University; Dr. Farquhar lectured at University of California, San Diego. On Mar. 22, Dr. Taruskin lectured at University of San Diego (USD). Total 1,500 audiences: civilians, University & High School students and Univ. scholars attended. All the three sites events were over successfully. The KPS has been held every year since 2002, hosted by KSO and four Universities (3 Univ. above and Point Loma Nazarene Univ.) with the cooperation of local citizens.

Dr. Karl Deisseroth

Dr. Deisseroth focused on microbial light-activated proteins such as channelrhodoposin of green algae and spearheaded “optogenetics”—a new methodological discipline in which neurons can be activated or inhibited on the millisecond scale using light. This achievement has revolutionized the field of systems neuroscience, enabling causal study of neuronal assembly activity and resulting function, beyond correlational studies.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. in 1971Ph.D./M.D., Stanford University; Principal Investigator and Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and of Bioengineering, Stanford University; 2012 D.H. Chen Professor, Stanford University; 2014 Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute.Selected Awards and Honors: 2005 NIH Director’s Pioneer Award; 2014 Keio Medical Science Prize; 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Life Science; 2018 Canada Gairdner International Award. Dr. Deisseroth won the various awards including others almost every year.

Basic Sciences Prize Field: Mathematical Sciences (including Pure Mathematics)

Dr. Masaki Kashiwara

Dr. Kashiwara established the theory of D-modules, thereby playing a decisive role in the creation and development of algebraic analysis. His numerous achievements—including the establishment of the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, its application to representation theory, and contribution to crystal basis theory—have exerted great influence on various fields of mathematics and contributed strongly to their development.Born in Yuki, Ibaraki, Japan in 1947M. Sci., Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo; Assistant, Associate Professor, Professor, Director, Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS), Kyoto University; 2010 Project Professor, RIMS.Selected Awards and Honors: 1981 Iyanaga Prize; 1988 Japan Academy Prize; 2008 Fujiwara Award; 2018 Chern Medal Award

Arts and Philosophy Prize Field: Arts (Painting, Sculpture, Craft, Architecture, Photography, Design, etc.)

Ms. Joan Jonas

Ms. Jonas created a new artistic form by integrating performance art and video art, and has evolved her original medium at the forefront of contemporary art continuously. Creating labyrinth-like works that lead audiences to diverse interpretations, she hands down the legacy of 1960s avant-garde art by developing it into a postmodern framework, profoundly impacting artists of later generations.Born in New York, U.S.A. in 1936Studied sculpture at the Scholl of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Columbia University; 1960s Interacted with various artists such as Claes Oldenburg, Trisha Brown, John Cage (1989 Kyoto Prize laureate), etc. and nurtured a concept of works; Professor, State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart; Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Selected Works: Vertical Roll (1972); Reanimation (2010/2012/2013); They Come to Us without a Word (2015)
