Giving for a Cause brings Gateway Centre for

Learning into the HCF family

It was a night to remember for Gateway Centre for Learning, the Midland

charity which took home $10,000 from HCF’s recent Giving for a Cause event.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant from Huronia Community Foundation,”

said Executive Director Jennifer Ellis. “We cannot exist without the generosity

of the people and organizations in our community, so this donation is a real

recognition of the work we do each and every day to make North Simcoe

stronger.”

On October 2, members of the HCF community gathered at Restaurant Ste.

Marie for HCFs Annual Giving for a Cause celebration. 100% of the proceeds

raised from this event went to Gateway — 50% for the establishment of an

endowed fund at the Community Foundation, and 50% to be used by the

organization as they see fit. Gateway provides vital literacy, numeracy and

other training opportunities for adults in the region.

Thanks to those who contributed to Giving for a Cause, helping to ensure

sustainable discretionary income for local charities. In particular, we are grateful

to volunteer Wendy Mullin and the team at Collaborative Haus for all of their

efforts to make this event a success.

Foundation hires new Executive Director Scott Warnock

Although he was not looking for a new job, new opportunities recently swept

away HCF’s former Executive Director, Stephen Couchman.

Stepping into the Executive Director position is Scott Warnock, a well-known

personality in North Simcoe.

“I am excited about taking on the Executive Director's position. During my

time in office, I saw first hand the great work that the Foundation does in

supporting worthwhile causes and programs across North Simcoe,” says

Warnock.

Having spent 21 years on Tay Township’s Municipal Council, with 12 of

those years as Mayor, Scott brings strong leadership and management skills.

Beyond his political life, Scott has also had wins in the charitable sector with a

number of successful fundraising initiatives. He has been recognized for his

years of extensive service to the community with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

Medal in 2013.

AGM brings new President and Directors

On September 18th community members gathered at the HCF Annual

General Meeting, held at the Midland Public Library, to celebrate the $266,566

in charitable donations stewarded by HCF in 2018/19.

We also officially welcomed three new board members: Kendra

Hallyburton, Cate Root and Anna Hartman. We also recognized Lorna

Tomlinson, who is stepping down as Chair of the Board. Roberta Bald was

elected as the Chair of the HCF Board for 2019-20. Congratulations Roberta!

LabX Media Group -- a model for corporate philanthropy

Thanks to Bob Kafato and the team from LabX Media Group who support

the HCF’s Smart & Caring grant program and implement their corporate

philanthropy in partnership with HCF. Each year, the staff at LabX are

encouraged to identify local charities to receive donations. Earlier this year,

LabX hosted a lunch and networking session for their staff and grant recipients.

It was a great opportunity to learn about and celebrate community philanthropy.

Municipal Update - Midland November 2019

Current Priorities For the past three years, GBGH has been an efficient hospital, performing

below the provincial expected cost per weighted case

This year, GBGH is forecasting we will do $6 million in unfunded volumes -

the root cause of hospital’s current financial challenges

Recent one-time funding announcement of 1.5% ($1.27M) does not come

near to ‘closing the gap’

Medium size hospital funding formu-

la does not consider unfunded vo-

lumes experienced in the current

year and therefore, does not result in

additional, timely funding

GBGH has a working capital deficit

of $15 million which will continue to

grow unless the hospital’s operating

deficit is addressed

Growing working capital deficit = no

surplus in funds to purchase equip-

ment, upgrade infrastructure in an

aging building - rely solely on sup-

port of community

Seniors Population Additionally, North Simcoe is home to a high senior population due to it being a retirement destination. The

percentage of the population over the age of 65 in our catchment area based on community is as follows:

24.5% - Midland

23.47% - Tiny Township

22.77% - Penetanguishene

18.91% - Tay Township

14.43% - Springwater

8.82% - Christian Island

Within the Midland and Penetanguis-

hene area, the impact of an aging po-

pulation can be expected to be even

more severe, as the proportion of the

population that is 65 and older (24.5% in

2016 in Midland, 22.77% in 2016 in Pene-

tanguishene) is already much greater

than for Simcoe County (approx. 17.5%

in 2016).

ED VISITS BY SENIORS

26% of ED visits are 65+ (11,752 sen-

iors in the ED)

Town of Midland

Total Giving $479,183

Last Gift (2017) $41,600

November 13, 2019 Re: Job Site Challenge The Province of Ontario is pleased to announce the launch of the Job Site Challenge —an exciting new program open to property owners and land developers across the province. The Job Site Challenge is a mega site program modelled on successful large-scale investment attraction opportunities created in a number of US states over the last decade. It is designed to create and showcase shovel-ready sites capable of attracting large-scale manufacturing investment. The government of Ontario will provide value-add services to increase the attractiveness of properties and market the sites to domestic and international investors. This is an opportunity for municipalities, economic development agencies, real estate developers, industrial property owners and other interested parties to submit proposals to the Province identifying mega site candidates for consideration. With the assistance of an internationally recognized site selector, sites will be evaluated and selected, based on how well they meet a set of site eligibility criteria. We are searching for sites ranging from 500 to 1,500 acres in size capable of supporting large-scale manufacturing operations. Specifically, sites that are or could be zoned for heavy industrial use and that are serviced or serviceable by utilities, transportation and other infrastructure. Program participants of selected sites will benefit from:

• Validation and endorsement of their site by an internationally recognized site selector

• Promotion and marketing by both the Province and the site selector to international and domestic investors

• Streamlined approvals review process for applicable provincial licences, permits and environmental approvals required to develop and service a site.

As the first of its kind in Canada, the Job Site Challenge is intended to raise Ontario’s profile and improve our attractiveness internationally — so that we can compete with other North American jurisdictions for coveted large-scale investments in automotive and other advanced manufacturing and create good, high-paying jobs for the people of Ontario.

Page 16: No. From Subject Documents/CIP/CIP Nov 12-15 with li… · LAS Blog: 2020 Pricing details have been announced for the LAS Electricity Program. Check out the LAS Blog for more information.

To participate, applicants are asked to submit a detailed proposal for consideration by March 31, 2020. We are asking participants to put forward their “best case” with sites that meet the specified criteria. All necessary information about the Job Site Challenge, including site eligibility criteria, is available in the program application guide which can be requested by email at [email protected]. Should you have any questions about the program or how to apply, please contact the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade — Small Business and Red Tape Reduction at the email noted above. You can also visit the Job Site Challenge website for additional information. Thank you for your interest in the Job Site Challenge. We look forward to working with interested program participants. Regards,

Giles Gherson Deputy Minister

From: OPP News Portal <[email protected]> Sent: November 8, 2019 3:21 PM Subject: News release from the OPP - SIM SWAP SCAM

A new media release has been made by the OPP for Southern Georgian Bay. The release

content is below. If you wish to unsubscribe from these alerts, log into the OPP News

Release Portal and select "Manage Account".

FROM/DE: Serious Fraud Office DATE: November 8, 2019

SIM SWAP SCAM

(ORILLIA, ON) - The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), in

partnership with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), are advising the public of a recent

scam that has been reported.

Fraudsters are using SIM swapping and phone number porting to gain access to your email,

social media and financial accounts. From there, they gain direct access to your personal

information, calendar, contacts and money. Fraudsters may empty your bank accounts,

apply for credit in your good name, or impersonate you to defraud your entire contact list.

In the meantime, you lose access to your mobile service, are typically locked out of all your

accounts, and are left scrambling.

Here's how the scam works:

Your SIM card connects your phone number and mobile service to your mobile device. You

connect dozens of your accounts to your mobile device through the use of apps. Most of

these logins are linked to your email address, phone number or both (if you setup two-

factor authentication).

A fraudster will impersonate you to gain access to your mobile account and may claim that

their phone has been lost or stolen. Your phone number will be linked to a new SIM and

device that the fraudster controls.

The fraudster then downloads a series of the most popular and most attractive apps. They

will select the 'Forgot Password' button on all apps. If an account is associated to your

phone number or email address, the fraudster will receive a verification code. They will then

use this code to confirm ownership of the account, create their own password and takeover

your accounts.

Tips to protect yourself:

- Keep your personal information personal. It is as simple as not publishing your date of

birth on social media.

- Do not answer phishing emails or text messages looking for you to confirm your

password or update your account information.

Page 24: No. From Subject Documents/CIP/CIP Nov 12-15 with li… · LAS Blog: 2020 Pricing details have been announced for the LAS Electricity Program. Check out the LAS Blog for more information.

- Use an offline password manager.

- Contact your phone provider and ask about additional security measures that may be

available.

- If you lose mobile service on your device, contact your service provider immediately. Go

with your gut. If a message seems fishy it probably is.

If you think you, or someone you know has been a victim of fraud, please contact your local

police service. For those who wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-

222-8477 or p3tips.com.

The SFO works in partnership with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (www.antifraudcentre.ca)

in educating the public with the release of fraud bulletins.

FROM/DE: Southern Georgian Bay Detachment DATE: November 12, 2019

From the Desk of Inspector Joseph Evans Interim Detachment Commander Southern Georgian Bay OPP

Winter is Here - Winter Driving Skills Required

(MIDLAND,ON)- Winter has arrived here in North Simcoe and drivers and pedestrians need to seasonally adjust their thoughts on how to make it to and from work safely with the onset of snow and icy conditions. These winter conditions require drivers to allow more time for their vehicle to stop and start from a stopped position.

Pedestrians are reminded that drivers may have a limited visibility due to blowing snow and that they need to double check before crossing the road as winter clothing may hinder their visibility or hearing of an approaching vehicle.

"Please allow yourself extra driving time and remember your winter driving skills to reach to your destination safely and to avoid a winter travelling tragedy" says interim Detachment Commander Inspector Joseph Evans.

Drivers are reminded to keep clear all windows and headlights of snow and frost and to adjust their driving habits for winter road conditions. Please view the following links for more information on winter driving and road conditions on Provincial Highways - https://511on.ca/

Police remind motorists that an essential part of the enforcement job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our trails, roadways and waterways. Educating the public about safe driving practices is a priority.

Release

County of Simcoe, Office of the Warden and CAO 1110 Highway 26, Midhurst, Ontario L9X 1N6

simcoe.ca

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

County of Simcoe expanding services with new Elmvale Health

and Emergency Services Centre Midhurst/November 14, 2019 – On November 14, 2019, County of Simcoe Warden George Cornell was joined by County Councillors, staff, caregivers and clients for the grand opening of the new Elmvale Health and Emergency Services Centre. Combining a Paramedic Service Station and a new Adult Day Program, this joint facility will replace two leased facilities in the Village of Elmvale and meet the needs of growing demand on services and growth in the surrounding communities. “This is another example of the County continuing to make responsible and impactful investments in our communities,” said Warden George Cornell. “Both Paramedic Services and our Adult Day Program are vital lifelines to the residents they serve, and the new Elmvale Health and Emergency Services Centre will enable the County to better control long term costs and meet growing demands for our services.” The County had outgrown the leased space at the Elmvale Fire Hall, which was originally set up for a single paramedic response unit 12-hours per day, and was being used to house a 24-hour, fully staffed paramedic transport unit. This new two bay station meets current needs, while allowing for future resources as demand requires. The new facility also allows the County to increase capacity at the Elmvale Adult Day Program, which was previously leased out of the Manse of St-John's United Church in Elmvale. The new space will allow for an increase in capacity and reduce the existing waitlists for the program. The County will provide services to an additional 8 residents per day in the expanded facility (total of 18 per day), who can participate in crafts, socialize and relax in a safe environment suitable for residents with limitations. County of Simcoe is composed of sixteen member municipalities and provides crucial public services to County residents in addition to providing paramedic and social services to the separated cities of Barrie and Orillia.
