When I was speaking at schools all over the country, many teachers

would ask my dad and me if we had a curriculum for the no cussing club, I

realized we didn't. I knew it would be a lot of work, but I hoped that by

developing a character-building program, I would be able to help teachers

better understand their students and help with the bullying that kids deal

with on a day-to-day basis. I hope that I can use what I had learned from

my experiences of being bullied at school and on the Internet to help

others. This program was put together by kids for kids.

Now, I’m not saying that I always did everything my par-ents taught me or that I never did anything wrong, but cussing was something we had talked about at home and I just didn’t want to do it. In Scouting and in elementary school, too, we had learned about respect and about doing our best and I just didn’t feel cussing was something I wanted to do.

My friends and I still spent a lot of time together, but their cussing made it hard for me to enjoy being around them. It

all negative— they seemed mad and unhappy all the time.

Talk about Cussing!Parents and concerned adults—nd out more about the cussing that goes on at school and about what your kids hear all the time. Kids—share with your parents! Let them know what your think about cussing and get their ideas! Don’t get into details about whether it’s right or wrong, just get to know each other better and nd out what they think!

Parents/teachers— Ask your kids:

Kids— Ask your parents & teacher

2. Why do you think kids cuss so much?

3. What do you think kids can do when they hear so much cussing all the time?

look in Webster’s College Dictionary at “cuss word” (or, in some dictionaries, it’s listed as one word: cussword), you see this definition: “A profane or obscene word.” And, Answers.com says the verb “cussing” means: “To invoke evil or injury upon.”

Just going by the definitions (and by your mom’s or teach-er’s reaction) it seems clear that cussing is negative and can be hurtful. Yes, cussing has been around for centuries, but, even still, it seems like it has been considered wrong or negative for all that time. Mark Twain talked about cussing in e Adven-tures of Huckleberry Finn, but he used the word, “cuss,” not the cuss word itself. “He . . . cussed me for putting on frills and trying to be better than him.” In another book, called Roughing It, one of Mark Twain’s characters even apologized for almost

Cussing by any other name . . . It’s still cussing!

Vulgarity ♦ Irreverent language ♦

Swearing ♦ Obscenities ♦

In cartoons, cussing looks something like this: (%^%#&(*%^$*&!*)*̂ *%23@!

I know that when you’re feeling down, a friend or your dad can help lift you up by the words they say.

For me, my reasons for not cussing weren’t all that philo-sophical or anything. It was more of a gut feeling, I didn’t like the way those words sounded or the way they made me feel. But, as I have thought about this more and tried to learn more, I found something pretty interesting.

Your brain on cussing

I read a thing about the brain and how the brain processes swear words. Language is what they call a “higher” brain func-tion because the processing of language happens in the part of the brain known as the cerebral cortex. But, scientists say swearing is processed in the lower brain, deep inside the brain where emotion and instinct take place. is may sound all sci-entific and stuff, but what it really is saying is that swearing is more automatic, not something that we have to put a lot of effort into. You’ve seen that, I’m sure. You’ve seen someone stub their toe, or burn their dinner, and, almost without thinking, out comes a cuss word.

Swearing and the brain

Language process-ing takes place in the cerebral cortex, so is

To me this is like what they call a “cheap shot” in basketball, sort of like hitting someone when you think the referee won’t see and then running on down the court. What does that really get you? Even if you end up winning, don’t you always have to watch your back for someone who is going to do the same thing—or worse—to you? Why would you want to be involved in that kind of stuff?

do and the thing that will protect you in the long rung. Here are a few other tips that will help you stay out of those bullying

“rings” and may help protect you from cyberbullying:

at last suggestion in the list above is important. Just like with bullying at school, remember to tell someone what’s going on! Tell, tell, tell as many people as you can if you ever have someone try to get away with cyberbullying. Remember, tell-ing is the thing that will protect you best. Telling is the thing that will stop bullies cold.

Safety Tips for Avoiding CyberbullyingWalk away! Limit your time on the computer, espe- ♦

cially the time you spend in chat rooms or social sites.

Don’t give out personal information online, ever. That ♦

includes your phone number, your real name, or your address.

Don’t tell anyone your passwords, even your friends. ♦

Never open e-mails from someone you don’t know or ♦

from someone you know is a bully.

If you have friends or know people who are being ♦

cyberbullies, don’t join in! Again, the best solution is to walk away.

If someone sends a mean or threatening message, ♦

don’t respond. Save it and show it to a trusted adult.

friends did back in middle school. But now, these people were seeing cussing as a habit they didn’t like and something they wanted to change. And, they were asking me how to do that!

I didn’t have a lot of answers at first, I could only think to share some of the things I did to keep from cussing. But, since I had never had a cussing habit, I wasn’t sure what I could say to really help. en I realized that cussing is like any other habit you want to break or area you want to improve. I real-ized I had lots of those, so I did know more about it than I thought.

So I had some ideas, then, I started getting ideas from other people who e-mailed me about how they stopped cussing. We started putting those together and sharing them with others and now, here are the Top Ten Tips that have worked for me with other habits and that other people say work great to stop cussing.

Top Ten Tips to Stop Cussing

. Realize it’s bad. . Find a role model. . Consider your friends. . Use money as a motivation. . Use substitutes in place of cuss words. . Monitor what you watch. . Monitor your music. . Get off the Internet. . Practice saying positive things. . Take the No Cussing Challenge.
