National Walk Safely to School Day—Friday Don’t forget our whole school is invited to join in “National Walk Safely to School Day” tomorrow morning (Friday 17th May). Students and families are to meet at Northview Park by 8am. The walk will officially begin at 8.15am. On arrival at school, all students and parents should meet in the covered area for a safety talk, prize draw and a snack. Now in its 20th year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. The objectives of WSTSD are: ⇒ To encourage parents and carers to walk to school

with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.

⇒ To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.

⇒ To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.

⇒ To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.

⇒ To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult o change as children become adults.

⇒ To promote the use of Public Transport. ⇒ To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor

vehicles. ⇒ To reduce the level of traffic congestion. Same Day Attendance Notifications—text messages A number of parents have recently questioned why they are receiving a generic text message when their child is absent from school. By law, (specifically, section 22 of the Education (General Provisions) Regulation 2017) schools are required to notify a parent when their child is absent from school without explanation, and to seek a reason for the absence from the parent. This means if our office hasn’t received a phone call, email, note or personal visit from a parent or guardian then we are required to send a text to parents. This process was legislated for the safety of all students in Queensland school. More specifically, schools need to know when and why a child is absent and parents/carers need to know if their child has not turned up for school. We are currently using the same day absence notification to ensure students are arriving at sporting, cultural events where students are transported by a parent, without attending school first, and a “traditional” paper roll is not being used. For example… Mackay District Athletics Carnival - Students who have been invited to attend may have a race at 10am so their parent doesn’t take the student to school, but takes them to the event at 9.30am. We have no record that the student is where they are supposed to be, hence a text is sent to confirm that the child is attending a school activity. Sports Gala Day (at the end of each term) - All students arrive at school, leave on a bus together and are under the direct supervision of Northview staff during the day. Students have their name marked off the roll at school and it is clear who is in attendance.

Year 5-6 Sydney/Canberra Camp payment A reminder to all students and parents that a minimum of $800 must have been paid by Wednesday next week (22nd May) to ensure your child can attend camp. If you have any concerns around making this payment, or would like to check how much you owe, please contact Miss Lennon in the office. Information from Digital Cocaine Seminar Mrs Stillman, our Guidance Officer attended a seminar this week regarding the

impacts of digital technology on student behaviour. Below is a sobering excerpt of what she heard. Neuroscientists have researched the damaging impacts that digital technology has on the brain and

have proven that it is the same as cocaine use. Dopamine is the chemical which is produced in the

brain when a person experiences something pleasurable (gaming/social media). A small amount of dopamine is good for all of us. A problem occurs when we produce too much

dopamine, our brain initially puts a barrier in place which cuts the feeling of pleasure, then we find we

need more of the same stimulation to experience the same effect. When excessive amounts of

dopamine are produced the brain can no longer control it and this leads to attentional difficulties. The part of the brain that manages emotional regulation (frontal lobe) is not fully developed until a

person is 25 years old. At the age of 12 years old most children have sufficient development to regulate

their emotions. Therefore, the risk of becoming addicted to something that provides significant

pleasure (gaming/social media) at a young age is higher due to the limited ability of the adolescent to

regulate their emotions and willingly stop themselves from accessing these activities. Signs that a person is addicted to Digital Technology: ⇒ Anger/Tantrum when they don’t have access to it. ⇒ Anxiety and Depression ⇒ Irritability ⇒ Attention Deficits ⇒ Sleep Loss (staying up late gaming, using social media or watching T.V.) ⇒ Emotional Numbness (no longer find other activities interesting because

they can’t provide the same stimulation at digital technology) which can

lead to anxiety/depression and self-harm. How to reduce the chances of becoming addicted to digital technology: ⇒ Teenagers need at least 9.25hrs sleep per night, younger children need more. ⇒ Remove digital devices from bedrooms (phones, tablets, console games, and televisions). ⇒ Share social media accounts to monitor children’s usage. ⇒ Turn off push notifications so that the person is not alerted to check device. ⇒ Do not use music to study or sleep. ⇒ Get out in nature – a lot!! ⇒ Replace digital babysitters with real people. ⇒ Digital De-tox takes 4 – 6 weeks and requires the person to have access to NO technology

(including T.V and educational games). ⇒ Older people can return to limited technology however it is recommended that young people

cannot because they do not have sufficient brain development to manage their emotional

responses. Technology developers do not allow their own children to

access digital technology until they are in their teens, because

they are aware of the damaging impacts of accessing digital

technology at a young age.

FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER

STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME OVERDUE PAYMENTS WERE DUE 15TH MARCH 2019

The SRS is offered to families as a cost effective method of purchasing resources and textbooks and is the most economical approach in providing the necessary items required to enable student learning. It offers value for money, when compared to purchasing these textbooks and other

resources yourself, and saves parents/caregivers the need to shop around for textbooks.

The $75(P,1,3) & $70(2,4,5,6) charge is used to provide a wide range of resources for student

use. Costs for students whose parents do not wish to participate in the scheme are available

on request. Thank you to those families that have already paid fees for 2019. If you still have

amounts owing, these need to be paid as soon as possible. Payment methods are listed below

and the school would appreciate payment of all outstanding debt prior to the 24th May. 1. Payments can be made in the following ways: 2. In person at Northview State School - Via EFTPOS or Cash. 3. Cheque payable to "Northview State School" 4. Payment by EFT can be made to the school bank account BSB: 064-707 Account number: 00092234. Please ensure the EFT payment reference clearly includes the STUDENT EQ ID NUMBER (10 DIGITS & LETTER), along with the characters SRS, eg. 0123456789ASRS 5. Payment via QPARENTS App. 6. Centrepay – Deductions can be made directly from your fortnightly Centrelink payments. 7. BPOINT – a payment plan can be set up for you by the office using BPOINT.

If you shop at Woolworths between now and 25th June, for every $10 you spend you’ll get an Earn & Learn sticker. If you place the stickers in either the box provided at Woolworths Mt Pleasant, Woolworths Andergrove or here in the office it would be greatly appreciated. The stickers can then be redeemed for exciting new equipment that will be used in classrooms to enhance the students learning experiences.
