The Fiesta Bowl will host the title tilt in the new state-of-the-art University of Phoenix Stadium. ABOUT THE BCS NA TIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is a five-game arrangement for postseason college football that is designed to match the two top-rated teams in a national championship game. The Fiesta Bowl will host the BCS National Championship Game. It will be the second game of the double-hosting model. This will not be the the first time the Fiesta Bowl has hosted the inaugural game in a new system. It also hosted the first Bowl Alliance championship game in 1996 and the first BCS unified championship in 1999. QUICK P A TH T O A NA TIONAL TITLE University of Florida head coach Urban Meyer is in his second year with the Gators. The list below shows the coaches who have won a championship in their first or second year at a school: Y ear Coach School Y ear 1942 Paul Brown Ohio State Second 1948 B. Oosterbaan Michigan First 1974 Barry Switzer Oklahoma Second 2000 Bob Stoops Oklahoma Second 2001 Larry Coker Miami (Fla.) First 2002 Jim Tressel Ohio State Second BUCKEYE BORN AND BRED Urban Meyer hails from Ashtabula, Ohio, which is approximately a three-hour drive from Columbus covering 197 miles. He was a defensive back at the University of Cincinnati and earned his bachelor’s degree in pyschology in 1986 before receiving his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio State in 1988. Meyer was a graduate assistant coach for Buckeye head coach Earle Bruce during the 1986 (tight ends) and 1987 (wide receivers) seasons. RECAPPING UF’S CHAMPIONSHIP RUN IN ‘96 After posting a 12-1 record in 1995, with the one setback coming at the hands of Nebraska in the national title game in the Fiesta Bowl, the Gators opened the 1996 campaign with high expectations once again. After posting a 35-29 win (in which UF jumped to a 35-0 lead in the first 20 minutes) at Tennessee in the third week of the season, in a much-hyped contest between Danny Wuerffel and UT’s Peyton Manning, the Gators moved into the number one spot in the polls. They held that spot until the last regular-season game of the year, when they suffered a 24-21 setback to number-two ranked Florida State in Tallahassee and fell to a fourth-place ranking in the national polls. Fate, however, would bring these two state rivals back together six weeks later in New Orleans. A week after the loss to Florida State, Texas upset number-three ranked Nebraska in the Big XII Championship Game. On that same night, the Gators defeated Alabama, 45-30, in Atlanta in the SEC Championship Game behind a six-touchdown performance by Wuerffel, which clinched the Heisman Trophy that he received the following week in New York. Entering the bowl season ranked third, the Gators then saw Ohio State knock off second-ranked Arizona State at the Rose Bowl in a dramatic last-second victory on New Year’s Day. That result now meant that the Jan. 2nd battle in New Orleans with top-ranked FSU was for the 1996 national championship. The Gators put together a tremendous all-around performance in posting a 52-20 victory over the Seminoles, which led to a consensus national championship. The 32-point margin of victory over FSU was the largest versus a top-ranked team in bowl history. GA T ORS IN BOWL GAMES Florida enters the game with a 15-18 all-time record in bowls, and is 5-3 against Big 10 members it has faced in those contests (Illinois, 1-0; Iowa, 2-1; Michigan, 0-1; Michigan State, 0-1; Penn State, 2-0). FLORIDA ATHLETIC EXCELLENCEFlorida and UCLA are the only schools in the nation to finish in the top 10 in the national all-sport

rankings every year since the 1983-84 academic year. The Gators have captured the Southeastern Conference All-Sports title 16 times in the 23-year

history of the award, including 14 times in the last 15 seasons.Florida is the only school in SEC history ever to win both the men’s and the women’s SEC all-sports

titles in the same academic year, pulling off the feat in 1992, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2003.Since 1980, Florida teams have ranked in the final top-10 national poll in their respective sports 227

times, including nine teams in 2005-06, led by a national title in men’s basketball.Few schools in the country can match the rich Olympic tradition the University of Florida boasts.

Since 1968, 117 Gator student-athletes have represented 27 countries in 10 Olympiads and laidclaim to 76 medals, including 39 golds. Twenty-six Gators represented 16 countries in Athens at the2004 Olympics and took home seven medals, including four gold.

CHAMPIONSHIP THEMEAt the Monday team meeting on Oct. 16 following the loss at Auburn, Florida head coach Urban

Meyer distributed a business card bearing an image of five rings – four of Florida’s SEC champion-ships and its 1996 national title – to the entire team; the back of each card bears a quote from 1996Heisman Trophy winner and former UF quarterback Danny Wuerffel on the pride that comes withovercoming adversity and sticking together as a team.

During the summer of 2006, the Florida football staff put together a video of great championshipmoments, including victories by Muhammad Ali, the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, New England Patri-ots, and the Gator men’s basketball team, as well as highlights from UF’s history on the gridiron.Meyer showed this to the team on Aug. 17 following a speech by Billy Donovan in an effort to buildappreciation for the hard work and success put forth by former generations of UF players.

In the week leading up to the SEC Championship Game, Meyer played several videos for the teamthat aired continuously on a loop throughout the facility that highlighted the great moments inFlorida’s SEC title-game history.

Meyer has invited several former players, including 1996 national championship team captainJames Bates, to visit and speak with the team. Other former players have included Alex Brown,

REWARDING THE PRESENTEach Monday during the season, Florida head football coach Urban Meyer announced the Cham-

pions and Players of the Game from the previous Saturday’s contest.

Each quarter during the season, Meyer and his staff hosts a Champions Club dinner, honoring theplayers who meet rigorous on and off-the-field requirements and are thus regarded as Champions.

FULL CIRCLEThe Gators’ viewing party for the Fox BCS Selection Show was held on the press level of Ben Hill

Griffin Stadium on Dec. 3, the same room in which Urban Meyer was introduced as the head coachof the Florida football team on Dec. 7, 2004, and nearly two years to the day after Meyer was hiredas UF’s leader on Dec. 4.

A LOOK AT THE 2006 FLORIDA GATORSThe 38-28 victory over No. 8 Arkansas at the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 2 yielded the

Gators’ first league title since 2000 and seventh in school history. The 38 points matched thesecond-most scored in the SEC title game, shy of the 45 the Orange and Blue scored againstAlabama in 1996.

The Gators improved to 6-2 in the SEC Championship Game, having collected wins in 1993,1994, 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2006. UF won the 1991 SEC crown and the league’s title game beganin 1992.

The 12 teams UF defeated finished the season with 11 combined wins against opponents whichwere ranked in the AP Top-25 poll at the time the game was played.

The Gators went 4-1 against ranked opponents, beating then-No. 13 Tennessee, No. 9 LSU, No.25 Georgia and No. 8 Arkansas and losing at No. 11 Auburn.

Florida finished the regular season with an 11-1 record to become only the second team in schoolhistory (1995) to win 11 games prior to a conference title or bowl game.

Florida was the first team in the nation to clinch a spot in a conference championship game amongteams in conferences that have one. With a win at Vanderbilt on Nov. 4 and a victory by LSU atTennessee later that day, Florida clinched a spot in the SEC Championship game.

On Nov. 11, Florida defeated South Carolina to finish undefeated in the SEC East for the ninthtime in school history.

Florida’s 21-4 overall record over the last two years is tied for the best among all SEC teams (LSU,21-4). Since 2005, UF has posted a 12-4 regular-season record in the SEC, the third-best in theleague and tops in the SEC’s Eastern Division.Florida 21-4LSU 21-4Auburn 19-5

Florida closed its home schedule on Saturday, Nov. 18, with a 62-0 romp over Western Carolinato finish undefeated in “The Swamp” for the second-straight season. UF had not gone undefeatedin back-to-back seasons in Gainesville since 1997-98. There are only three other teams in thecountry that finished the 2005 and 2006 seasons perfect at home (Boise State, Louisville andUSC). Currently, the Gators own a 15-game winning streak in The Swamp, which is the third-longest run nationally.

With the win at Florida State on Nov. 25, UF has now taken seven-straight games againstTennessee, Georgia and FSU. It is the longest streak over those three teams in school history, topping the five-game skein established in the 1995-96 seasons. Urban Meyer is the only coach inschool history to begin his career with six-straight wins over the trio. The conquest of FSU markedthe first time that UF had ever defeated the Vols, ‘Dogs and Seminoles in back-to-back seasons.

Florida has been ranked in the AP, Coaches’ and BCS polls each week since Urban Meyer’s arrivalin Gainesville, which is a streak of 31-straight AP and Coaches’ polls. The Gators’ current ranking ofsecond in the BCS is the highest for an Urban Meyer-coached team and equals the highest for UF,a position it last occupied on Nov. 24, 2001.

GAME-BY-GAMEThe season-long celebration of 100 years has

been highlighted by several recognitions at UFgames this season:

vs. Southern Miss, Sept. 2Prior to the game, Florida recognized the

1996 national championship team with an on-field presentation. That season, UF posted a12-1 record and defeated then-No. 3 FloridaState on Jan. 2, 1997, in the Sugar Bowl, 52-20, to claim the consensus 1996 national cham-pionship.

vs. Alabama, Sept. 30A special pre-game ceremony was held hon-

oring four Gator football legends. The namesof Gator legends Emmitt Smith, SteveSpurrier, Danny Wuerffel and JackYoungblood were unveiled on the FloridaFootball Ring of Honor. The announcement ofthe Ring of Honor was made the night beforeat the Gator Gala at the Stephen C. O’ConnellCenter. Nearly 1,100 members of the GatorNation celebrated 100 years of Florida footballat the event, where it was announced that $6.1million has been raised for the UF Athletic En-dowment Fund from proceeds of the gala andother projects surrounding the centennial cel-ebration.

Additionally, UF players wore throwback uni-forms for the game. The jersey was from the1966 season and the helmets were from 1967.

vs. Western Carolina, Nov. 18As part of the University of Florida’s celebra-

tion of 100 Years of Florida Football, Gatorfootball fans were encouraged to cast theirvotes for the greatest players in UF history.Fans had been voting since August, helpingcompile the Gator Fans’ All-Century Team pre-sented by Gatorade. The team was honoredat halftime of the game.

LINEBACKERSEarl Everett, who currently leads the team with 78 tackles, is looking to become the fifth player in

school history to lead the Gators in the department in back-to-back seasons and the first since 1991-92 (Wilber Marshall, 1981-82; Alonzo Johnson, 1984-85; Pat Moorer, 1988-89; Carlton Miles, 1991-92). Please note that no tackle stats were kept or are available prior to 1973.

Brandon Siler has had two sacks in the last five games he has played in to bring his total up to 3.0.The amount is tied for fourth on the team and first among members of the team not on the defensiveline.

Brandon Siler and Earl Everett returned after leading the team in tackles in each of the past twoyears. The last time UF returned two players that led the squadin tackles in previous seasons was 2001 when Marquand Manuel (118, 1999) and Todd Johnson(102, 2000) were on the roster.

Freshman A.J. Jones and sophomore Jon Demps have suffered injuries that will affect the depth atthe position. Demps suffered an ACL tear in his left knee in preseason drills, while Jones suffered afracture in his right foot on Monday, Aug. 28. Both injuries occurred during non-contact drills.

DEFENSIVE LINEThe Florida defensive line accounted for five of UF’s six tackles for loss at Florida State.

Against Arkansas, Florida opened the game with Steven Harris and Jarvis Moss at defensive endsand Ray McDonald and Joe Cohen at defensive tackles. It was the second time UF opened with thefour on the line and the seventh different arrangement the Gators have used this season to open agame.

Against Georgia, Ray McDonald scored the first touchdown of his career on any level as he recov-ered a Georgia fumble and returned it nine yards for the score on the Bulldogs’ opening drive of thesecond half. The fumble recovery for a touchdown was the first by a Gator since a 77-yard return byKeiwan Ratliff against Florida State on Nov. 29, 2003.

Ryan Smith had one interception against Arkansas to bring his total to a team-leading eight on theseason. Earlier this year, Smith became the only player under Coach Meyer ever to have two-or-moreinterceptions in a game on two occasions by doing so against Alabama and LSU. SPECIAL TEAMSWith a blocked punt in the SEC Championship game against Arkansas, UF brought its total in 2006

up to eight to establish a school record for blocks in the regular season. Although bowl stats did notcount in 1995, UF blocked two extra points against Nebraska for nine in all in 1995.

The Orange and Blue blocked three kicks during the 17-16 win over South Carolina, highlighted bya field-goal block on the final play of the game by Jarvis Moss, and the deciding margin was the resultof a blocked extra point.

Through 13 games of the 2006 season, the Gators have allowed 18 punts to be returned for 58yards. The Florida punt return defense ranks fourth nationally. In 2005, Florida’s special teams rankedninth nationally in net punting (38.1 per punt), while the Gators’ punt return defense was the second-best nationally, allowing 3.3 per return.

Florida’s 171 yards in punt returns against Western Carolina were the most by a Gator team sinceUF had 184 against San Jose State in 2003.

Brandon James set a school record with 155 yards in punt returns against Western Carolina. His 155yards were the ninth-highest in SEC history and the second-highest by a freshman in the league(Norman Jefferson, LSU, 169, 1983).

Brandon James’ 77-yard punt return for a touchdown in the Western Carolina game was the first bya UF player since Nov. 11, 2000 (Lito Sheppard, 57-yards, vs. South Carolina). James is only thesecond freshman in school history to return a punt for a touchdown (Hal Griffin returned three fortouchdowns in 1946).
