Eachteamdualmatchconsistsoffivematchesbetweenpairs,witheachmatcha best-of-three sets in rally scoring. The Nos. 4 and 5 teams (and, if available, a No.6non-scoringteam)willplayduringthefirst45minutesofeachdual,followedby the Nos. 1, 2, and 3 teams in the second 45 minutes of each scheduled dual.
USC, Florida State, and Loyola Marymount will participate in a 20-pair single-elimination bracket-play tournament on Saturday, March 15, with matches set to begin at 9 a.m. PT. All matches will be streamed live on the USCTrojans.com Pac-12 Networks portal.

Collier, a USC graduate, guided the Women of Troy to a 16-8 record in 2013anda thirdplacefinish in the teamportionof theAVCACollegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship. The No. 1 team ofKirbyBurnhamandSteviRobinsonwontheAVCApairsnationaltitleandbecameUSC’sfirst-everAll-Americansinthesport.
She coached USC to a 7-4 record in 2012, the sport’s inaugural season as an NCAA-sponsored “emerging” sport, and sent two USC teams to the pairs championshipofthefirstAVCApairstourney.
ShehasledtwoU.S.teamstofifth-placeOlympicfinishes:HollyMcPeakandNancyReno(1996 Atlanta Games) and Annette Davis and Jenny Johnson (2000 Sydney Games). Collier has coached beach volleyball since 1990, and has worked with standouts Misty May-Treanor,KerriWalsh,NicoleBranagh,RachelWacholderandAngieAkers.
AsheadcoachfortheU.S.SeniorA2BeachNationalTeam,sheledteamstofirstandfifthplacefinishesatthe2012WorldUniversityChampionshipsinBrazil.ShecoachedU26andU23A2U.S. squadsat the2010TeamFISUWorldUniversityChampionships inTurkeyandcoached the U26 U.S. squads at the 2011 championships in China. She served as coach of TeamUSAatthe2013SummerWorldUniversityGamesinRussia.
On top of her duties, she is a USAV High Performance coach and a founding member of the USAV Beach Coaching Accreditation Program Cadre. She is currently a faculty member (teaching a variety of kinesiology classes) at Santa Monica (Calif.) Junior College, where she has spent the past 32 years. She began as the women’s cross country and track andfieldcoach,andwonthreeCaliforniaStatechampionships.

OPPONENT SERIES RECORDS: The Trojans won each of their matches againstBakersfieldin2013;thefirstwasa5-0victoryonMarch14andthesecondwasa4-1winintheUSAVInvitationalonApril20.USCfacedFloridaStateonceeachin2012and2013.Inthefirstmeeting,theSeminolesclaimeda4-1winontheirhomecourts(March24).FSUcameoutwesttofacetheWomenofTroyatMerleNorman Stadium in 2013 and edged USC, 3-2, on March 10. The Seminoles are one of just three teams that have ever beaten the Trojans. The other two are Long Beach State and Pepperdine. USC is 6-0 all-time against Loyola Marymount and went 3-0 against the Lions in 2013.
ALL-AMERICANNATIONALCHAMPIONS: Senior KirbyBurnham teamed with SteviRobinsonto produce a 25-4 record as a pair in 2013. The tandem won their last eight consecutive matches including four at the AVCA pairs championships on May5,2013,toclaimUSC’sfirst-everindividualchampionshipinsandvolleyball.Theywereeachlaternamedthefirst-eversandvolleyballAll-AmericansinUSChistory.
AHEARTFORART: Junior AlexaStonishisafineartsmajoratUSC’sfamedRoskiSchool of Art and Design. She emphasizes and is an enthusiast in photography. Some of Stonish’s work has been featured in the Artleticson-campusexhibitthatdisplays the works of USC student-athletes.
INHERBLOOD:FreshmanSevanaDvorak comes from some esteemed volleyball bloodlines. Her father, RudyDvorak, was an All-American setter at USC in 1986 andledtheTrojanstothe1985and1986NCAAFinalFourasanall-tournamentselection each year. He went on later to have a successful pro beach career. Sevena’s uncle DustyDvorakwasatwo-timeAll-AmericansetteratUSC(1979-80)wholedTroytothe1977and1980NCAAtitlesbeforeheguidedtheU.S.toa gold medal at the 1984 Olympics. He is regarded as America’s greatest men’s volleyballsetterandisamemberoftheUSAVandUSCAthleticsHallofFames.Her aunt DeidraDvorakplayedatStanfordandinEurope,whileanotheruncleDrakeDvorak played at San Diego State.
CHILDRENOFTHECORN: USC’s sophomore class of AlexaStrange and LaurenSieckmann were each Nebraska Cornhuskers previously. Strange is a Southern California native (San Clemente, Calif.) and joins the Women of Troy following asuccessfulspringatNebraskawhereshewaspartoftheNo.1pairwithKelseyRobinson. Strange has extensive international sand experience andwas alsoa member of the Cornhuskers’ indoor volleyball team. Sieckmann, who is from Omaha, Neb., committed to the Cornhuskers as one of the top players in the nation and left high school early to participate in spring drills with the team in 2012. By the spring of 2013, she had played a fall of indoor volleyball at NCAA DII WayneStateCollege,andwasplayingsandvolleyballexclusivelyatPepperdine.Sieckmann enrolled at USC in the fall of 2013 and must sit out the 2013-14 season per NCAA transfer rules.
CONVERSIONFACTORS:TheWomenofTroyhavebenefittedfromtheconversionof several former indoor volleyball stars. NatasaSiljkovic completed her indoor career as a middle blocker in the fall of 2012 and stepped foot onto a sand court forthefirsttimein2013.Sheplayedatcourtsthree,four,andfiveandproduced15winsfortheTrojans.Asagraduatestudent,Siljkovicisexpectedtocontributemightily from court three this season. JuniorBriaRuss was a mainstay at USC’s top twocourtsin2013,herfirstseasononthesandaftersheappearedin26matchesfor the USC indoor team as a freshman. All-American Kirby Burnham, SamHirschmann, and EveEttinger are each also former member’s of USC’s indoor squad. Graduate MaryBuckingham lettered for California’s indoor team in 2009.
RECRUITINGCLASS: The Trojans signed one of the top recruiting classes in the countryforthe2013-14season.Regardedasoneofthetopindoorsettersinthenation, SaraHughes(MaterDeiHS/SantaAna,Calif.)announcedshewouldfocussolely on sand volleyball making her the top sand volleyball recruit in the nation. HugheswasaFab50selectionandclaimedaplethoraofindividualaccoladesontheindoorcourt.ShealsoarrivesatUSCwithawealthofexperienceonthebeach as winner of tournaments and championships from 2011-13. AllieWheeler (ArchbishopMittyHS/SanJose,Calif.)ledherschooltoa34-0markandthe2012CIFCentralCoastchampionshipasa seniorandwasamemberof theUSAVHigh Performance Beach U19 program.

PROMDATE:FreshmanKellyClaes should be shopping for prom dresses. Instead, she will play a key role in the Trojans’ 2014 season. Claes completed high schoolgraduationrequirementsasemesterearlyandleftElDoradoHSto jointhe Women of Troy. She was named to the Volleyball MagazineGirls Fab 50andistheonlyplayeronthelistthatwillplaysandvolleyballexclusivelyatthecollegiate level. With her arrival, the Trojans signed the top sand volleyball recruit in consecutive years. USC signed top sand recruit SaraHughes in 2013.
STAFF INFECTION: With the addition three-time Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist Misty May-Treanor, the Trojans boast one of the most broadly experienced coaching staffs in the nation. May-Treanor formerly was anassistant coach at her alma mater Long Beach State before she joined one of her mentors AnnaCollieron theTrojanstaff. Fuller isa formerVirginiaTechplayerwhoalsocoachesaprobeachpair.Eachassistantbringsgreatdepthto the Trojans’ ability to run drills and develop skills in addition to some valuable experienceontheinternationallevel.
USCALUMSONTHEBEACH: USC women’s volleyball players have shined on the pro beach world circuit, both internationally and domestically. Some of the top Women of Troy stars have included 2012 London Olympic silver medalists AprilRoss and JenniferKessy(winnersof24tournaments,includingthe2009FIVBWorldChampionship); Tracy Lindquist (12-year pro);Geena Urango, Jessica Gysin, and KeaoBurdine(youngbeachstars);BibianaCandelas (indoor All-American who won the first-ever Collegiate Nationals Beach Championship in 2006);PaulaWeishoff(anindoorOlympianandVolleyballHallofFameinductee);andMikiMcFadden (indoor Olympian). The USC men also have a strong tradition including such pro tourney winners as TimHovland, AdamJohnson, PatPowers, SteveTimmons, SteveObradovich, and RonLang.
LAST SEASON: USC went 16-8 in its second year. All eight of the Trojans losses were tooneof three teams:FloridaStateonce,Pepperdine three times,andLong Beach State four times. Four of USC’s losseswere by a 3-2margin andcamedownto thefinalpoints in thethirdsetof thedecidingpairsmatchup.TheTrojansfinishedwitha7-3markathomeinthenewlyopenedMerleNormanStadiumandweregiventheirfirst teambidtotheAVCAchampionships.USCdefeatedNorthFloridaintheopeningroundbutlosttoPepperdineinthenextmatchup. The Trojans came back to defeat Louisiana-Monroe to reach the nationalsemifinalsbeforefallingtonationalchampionLongBeachState,3-2,inthesemifinalmatch.KirbyBurnham and SteviRobinson completed an eight-matchwinningstreaktoclaimthepairschampionshipandbecameUSC’sfirst-ever sand volleyball All-Americans.

Merle Norman Stadium is the new on-campus home to the USC women’s sand volleyball program. Located on the east side of University Park Campus on Figueroa Streetacross from theGalenCenter, itfeatures three courts with sand from the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The palm tree-encircled stadium also has bleachers and a grass berm for spectator seating, a scoreboard and audio system, lighting, restrooms, showers, and multiple team storage areas.
Ground was broken to build the new venue in July of 2012 under the generous donations of Jack and Helen Nethercutt and John and Melinda Muller, and a large sum from an anonymous donor. The Mullers haveadaughter (Erica)on the2013 squad.AUSCalumnus, Jack Nethercutt served as vice president of marketing and later President of Merle Norman Cosmetics in 1973. He left the company to pursueother ventures but returned to his presidency in March of 2002 and now serves as Chairman of the Board with his wife Helen as Vice Chairman.
The stadium is named for Nethercutt’s great aunt and namesake of the cosmetics corporation, Merle Nethercutt Norman. Both Jack and Helen are active in local LosAngeles non-profit groupsandcharitiesandareGalenFounders,membersoftheScholarshipClub, and Conquest supporters of the USC Trojan Marching Band.
On Thursday, March 7, 2013, USC officially openedand dedicated Merle Norman Stadium in conjunction with the sand volleyball program’s alumni match. The NethercuttswereonhandtocuttheribbonwithfirstTrojan head coach Anna Collier and athletic director Pat Haden. USC All-America alumnae and Olympic beach volleyball silver medalists Jennifer KessyandApril Rosschristened the sand in their return tocampus for the special match.
TheWomenofTroyplayedtheirfirstdualmatchinthestadium on Sunday, March 10, 2013, and earned a 4-1 victory over Loyola Marymount. USC produced a 7-3markonitshomesandatMerleNormanStadiumin 2013 and is now 7-3 overall.

§USCisamongmorethan40schoolsthatnowfieldawomen’ssandvolleyballprogram as the sport begins its third season as an NCAA “emerging sport”.
§The sport initially had 10 years to get at least 40 schools to sponsor sand volleyball for two consecutive years and thereby become established as an NCAA “championship sport”, but has now reached the minimum number in just three seasons.
§NCAAsandvolleyballcompetitionissimilartothatofcollegiatetennis.Eachteam competition is called a dual and consists of fivematches betweenpairs.Thewinningteamneedstowinatleastthreeofthefivematches.Theseparate matches will be best-of-three set competitions, with rally scoring to 21pointsinthefirsttwosetsandto15inthethird.Teamsmustwinsetsbyatleast two points. Some competitions will also feature a pairs’ championship through bracket play.
