NSW netball association limited 2003> annual report
2003 was a year of change – not only of personnel but more importantly consolidation and change in the
way services are provided to our members and the way in which we manage our organisation. This was
never more evident than by the amount of change that was passed at the November Council meeting. My
sincere thanks are expressed to the Board, the members of our Committees, Districts and Staff for their
ongoing efforts in all areas of our organisation.
Netball NSW experienced some amazing firsts in 2003, and the one that immediately springs to mind was
our magnificent double-header at the SuperDome between the Sandpipers and Firebirds, and the TAB
Swifts and Phoenix. What a night ! What a record crowd! What tremendous skills displayed by our
netballers ! Put very simply – what a showcase of netball. Sincere thanks are extended to our staff and
volunteers who organised this wonderful event and to our CBT players who publicised the event in the
public arena. And then came the CBT Grand Final – again what a spectacle for netball – magnificent effort
from everyone involved.
Before moving on I would like to make brief mention of the Sandpipers and the circumstances surrounding
the disbanding of the team. I would like to acknowledge and thank all those players that were a part of
the “Sandpipers team” over the seven years that they were a part of the best competition in the world; to
the coaches, managers and support staff thank you for your time and expertise. For the angst that was
caused by the decision to fold the team and the manner in which the team found out, I again sincerely
apologise on behalf of the Board. Procedures have been put in place to ensure that a similar
circumstance does not occur again.
Our Annual Dinner was also a spectacle to behold – again record numbers, a great venue and an
animated MC in Anne Sargeant were always going to guarantee a great night. The awarding of the Nance
Kenny Medal to Tanya Lund as the State League Player of the Year together with the awarding of the
inaugural Marilyn Melhuish Award to our outstanding CBT player, Mo’onia Gerrard, were just two of many
highlights. I would make mention here of catching Anne Sargeant off guard with a special presentation as
one of Sydney’s Greatest Ever Sports Stars.
To our wonderfully supportive Districts that held our State Championships – Gosford, and our State-Age
Championships – Newcastle, Charlestown and Lakeside we say thankyou for a job well done. To our
Committees – Events, Umpires and Selections, we also say thank you for your time and the expertise you
provide in these areas.
Sincere thanks are also extended to those coaches, managers and officials who assist in making our
Academy programs around the State a success. Also to the personnel attached to the Metropolitan
Squads thankyou. Both of these programs are the breeding grounds for our up and coming netballers.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2003
NSW netball association limited 2003> annual report
At the international level we have again been represented by a strong contingent of players and officials –
Liz Ellis, Alison Broadbent, Catherine Cox, Sharon Kelly, Debra Farrelly, Maureen Boyle, Leanne Machelise
who all attended the World Championships in Jamaica in July. Congratulations ladies.
National Championships for the 17’s and 19’s held in Brisbane showcased our up and coming talent with
the 21’s and Opens held in Melbourne providing exciting viewing. Our sincere thanks must go to all of the
coaches, assistant coaches and managers whose dedication to our sport assists Netball NSW in staying
at the top at this level. A big THANK YOU to all those supporters that travelled to both events to support
our players.
The support that Netball NSW receives from its sponsors is immeasurable and we do acknowledge each
and every one of them for their ongoing support and commitment to netball – Dairy Farmers,
Commonwealth Bank of Australia, TAB, Sydney Olympic Park Authority, Mitre Sports, Horsell International,
Court Craft, Victor Sports, Harvey Norman, Dunlop Bedding, Greater Union Cinemas and Rebel Sports.
As 2003 was the “Year of the Official” I would extend our heartfelt thanks to all those umpires, regardless
of badge or level, who make themselves available each Saturday during competition so that many, many
games of netball can be played and enjoyed across this State.
Acknowledgement is made of the Department of Sport and Recreation who provide support and advice to
us in many different capacities.
I would like to thank the Districts, our wonderful Staff and in particular the Board for their support
throughout the year. I look forward to being a part of the challenges of the future.

leases. Finance leases are capitalised, recording an asset and a liability equal to the present value
of the minimum lease payments, including any guaranteed residual values. Leased assets are
depreciated on a straight line basis over the estimated useful lives where it is likely that the entity
will obtain ownership of the asset, or over the term of the lease. Lease payments are allocated
between the reduction of the lease liability and the lease interest expense for the period. Lease
payments for operating leases, where substantially all the risks and benefits remain with the
lessor, are charged as expenses in the period in which they are incurred.
f. Inventories – Note 6
Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value.
g. Receivables – Note 5
Debtors are generally settled within 60 days. Debtor’s balances are carried at amounts
due. The collectability of debts is assessed at year end and specific provision is made for
any doubtful debts
h. Employee Entitlements – Note 11
Provision is made for the Company’s liability for employee entitlements arising from services
rendered by employees to balance date. Employee entitlements expected to be settled within one
year together with entitlements arising from wages and salaries, annual leave and sick leave
which will be settled after one year have been measured at their nominal amount. Other employee
entitlements payable later than one year have been measured at the present value of the
estimated future cash outflows to be made for those entitlements.Contributions are made by the
Company to employee superannuation finds and are charged as expenses when incurred.
i. Payables – Note 8
Liabilities are recognised for amounts to be paid in the future for goods or services received.
Trade accounts payable are normally settled within 60 days.
