“Music gives a soul to the universe,

wings to the mind, flight to the imagination,

and life to everything.” – Plato

There is no disputing the value of music to children. Research shows music study increases all areas of a child’s intellectual development as well as making them happy.

This confirms what musicians have known throughout the ages — that music provides pleasure for people of

any age. It does this by tapping directly into our innate pleasure systems and stimulating the brain’s opiad

and dopamine circuits.

Did you know?

• Babies are born with perfect pitch — it’s how they recognise their mother’s voice and learn language

• A Swiss study of 1,200 children showed how playing music improved children’s reading and verbal

skills by improving concentration, memory and self- expression

• A Hong Kong study found that adults who had music training before the age of 12 years were better

able to recall spoken words than adults who had little or no training in music

• A US study discovered that children aged 5–7 years who had been lagging behind in their school

performance had caught up with their peers in reading and were ahead of them in maths after just

seven months of music lessons

• Listening to music at any age taps directly into our innate pleasure systems, activating euphoria-

inducing brain regions

INTRODUCTION: Welcome to the North Sydney Demonstration School Band Program. All students in years 3 – 6 are invited to

join the Band program.

This handbook details how the Band Program works, so please take the time to read this to understand the

expectations of band members and your parental role as well as approximate costs for band members.

There are three bands in the school, providing an opportunity for a range of skills. Membership of a band is

based on musical skill level and not school year level.

Junior band – This band is for students with little or no prior instrumental training and is the starting

point for students joining the band program. (Students will mostly be from Years 3 or 4 but students

from 5 & 6 are also welcome to join)

Intermediate Band – Students generally progress to this band after a year of playing with Junior

Band. (Students will mostly be from Years 4 or 5)

Senior Band - Students generally progress to this Band after playing in the Intermediate Band for a

year, students will require an appropriate level of musicianship to be offered a place in this band.

(Students will mostly be from Years 5 or 6)

Being part of a band is a wonderful opportunity for all students and no prior experience is needed to join the

junior band. During their time in band, students will learn to play an instrument, read music, develop an

appreciation and understanding of a wide range of musical styles and be given many performance

opportunities. The many skills they learn (such as increased concentration and self discipline) carry over into

all parts of their lives.

AIMS OF BAND PROGRAM: The aims of our Band Program are:

To give all students, regardless of their musical experience the opportunity to participate and

develop their musical abilities;

To ensure that all students’ participation in the band is happy, productive and a memorable

experience;

To give every student the opportunity to play in a team environment;

To help students develop an appreciation and understanding of a wide range of musical styles;

To develop ‘musicianship’ and expressive skills;

To develop teamwork and leadership skills;

To encourage a sense of responsibility and commitment to themselves, the band and the school;

To provide performance opportunities appropriate with band skill levels.

BAND MANAGEMENT: The North Sydney Demonstration School Band Program operates under the auspices of the school and

managed by a Band Committee; consisting of band parents, school representatives and the Band Director.

The Band Committee Executive positions are elected at the AGM held in Term 1 each year.

All Band parents are welcome and encouraged to join the committee to contribute to the children’s musical

experience. Meetings are held twice per term and meeting details are published in the Dem Newsletter. We

look forward to seeing you there.

The Band Committee employs Directions in Music to work as the Band Director - whose role it is to develop

the students’ musical skills through rehearsals, performances, the band camp and a range of other activities

and functions throughout the year.

COMMUNICATION: The Dem newsletter is the main means of communication to band parents, with regular notices of upcoming

events, meetings and important information. Please ensure that you read the weekly Band News in the Dem.

When required, notes will distributed at band rehearsal, however please note all notes will also be

mentioned in the Dem newsletter and uploaded onto the NSDS website. Parents please ensure you refer to

the weekly newsletter.

Directions in Music will also communicate to band parents, via email and text message, such as tutor lesson

details, fees and student report cards. Please ensure that you have provided an email address that you

regularly check.

INSTRUMENTS: Applicants for the Junior Band may apply to play the following instruments. No previous musical experience

is expected. Instruments are allocated by the Band Director based on the preferences of the applicant, the

physical suitability of the instrument for the student (i.e. whether the student has the fine motor skills and

co-ordination for their preferred instrument) and the need to achieve a balanced sound in the band.

The instruments on offer (and available to hire through the school) include:

Woodwinds: Flute

The flute is the smallest and highest pitched instrument. It is a member of the woodwind family even though it is made of metal and doesn’t use a reed to create the sound. In order to produce a tone on the flute, the player blows across the tone hole of the mouthpiece, allowing the air to split at the far edge of the hole. That creates a whistle sound. It uses the same principle as a whistle or blowing across a soda bottle. In all cases the air splits to create a sound. Aiming a thin air stream at the edge of the hole to make a sound can be a bit challenging at first but it gets much easier with time and practice

Clarinet

The clarinets have a large range, their lowest notes being lower than the saxophone and their highest notes almost reaching that of the flute. Clarinets require considerable fine motor/dissociation skills but slightly smaller air capacity than the flute. Their sound, created by airflow and a vibrating reed, is rich and sonorous (after some practice). In primary school we play the Bb Clarinet. The school has two bass clarinets which experienced students may be invited to play. In high school some students may progress to the oboe or bassoon.

North Sydney Demonstration School Band Handbook 2014

Page 8

Saxophone

The saxophone comes in four sizes. In primary school we play the alto and tenor saxophones. Learning the fingering on one saxophone allows students the versatility to play all saxophone types; soprano, alto, tenor and baritone. It is suitable for all students, but difficult to play if they are small. The school has a Tenor saxophone which experienced students may be invited to play.

Brass: Cornet / Trumpet

The trumpet or cornet is the smallest and highest member of the brass family. As with all brass instruments, the sound is produced by buzzing the lips into a mouthpiece. The difference between a trumpet and cornet is very minor. They both play the same notes and they sound virtually the same. In appearance, the trumpet looks a bit longer and more slender than a cornet. The real difference has to do with the way the tubing of the instrument flares. A cornet is more cone shaped or conical than a trumpet. For all practical purposes they are the same instrument for beginners. Typically Junior Band students start with a cornet and move to a trumpet in Intermediate or Senior Band. Either is a good instrument for a beginner. The trumpet is used in all kinds of music including jazz, rock and classical music. They are popular in high school Stage bands.

Trombone

This is the only instrument that uses a slide system to change its pitch. Students need to have good listening skills. Like the trumpet, this instrument is incredibly versatile because it can play jazz, rock and classical music. The sound is produced by buzzing the lips into a mouthpiece.

Euphonium

The euphonium is an extremely important instrument it has the versatility to play fast and furious melodic passages as well as a low enough range to form part of the bass line. Its mouthpiece is large making it easy to play and immediately produce a large, rich and warm sound.

Tuba

The tuba is a bigger version of the euphonium. It is the lowest pitched instrument in the band and as such provides an important foundation for every piece of music played. Its sound is both rich and powerful. (In high school tuba players are highly sought after and usually find that they have many music opportunities.)

French Horn

The French horn or sometimes called just “horn” is a member of the brass family. As with all brass instruments, the sound is produced by buzzing the lips into a mouthpiece. The French horn is a beautiful sounding instrument but beginners should proceed with caution. Due to the way a horn is constructed, it is more difficult for young students to play the correct notes. The French horn can be a great beginning instrument for someone with some music background and the ability to match pitches correctly. The

North Sydney Demonstration School Band Handbook 2014

Page 9

student should be able to sing in tune in order to know when they are playing the correct pitches on their horn.

North Sydney Demonstration School Band Handbook 2014

Page 10

Percussion: Note – students choosing percussion will be required to play all of the following instruments

North Sydney Demonstration School Band Handbook 2014

Page 11

NOTE: not all of the above instruments will be represented in the NSDS School Band. The composition

changes from year to year.

INSTRUMENT HIRE:

Drum Kit

Students learning drums will need to have excellent co-ordination and a very steady sense of rhythm and beat. Students need to be dedicated and preferably organised, as percussion requires flexibility and multi-tasking.

Bass Drum

The Bass drum is used to support the bass line and punctuate dramatic parts of the music. Students are taught to read pitch as well as rhythm as they progress up the band structure.

Auxiliary Percussion

In addition to being competent drummers and bass drum players, percussionists are required to juggle up to 30 different percussion instruments, each with their own unique technical requirements. These smaller instruments include: crash cymbals, bongos, maracas, tambourines, chimes, to name a few.

Other important instruments: Bass guitar

The bass guitar plays an important role in the bass section of the band. Keeping a steady rhythm or pulse is one of the main roles for the bass guitar player. The student’s arms will need to be long enough to reach the end of the guitar. The Bass Guitar is not available to hire from NSDS, however Amplifiers can be hired for use during rehearsal sessions.

Xylophone & glockenspiel

The glockenspiel is constructed similarly to a piano, but forms part of the percussion section because it needs to be struck in order to get a noise.

Keyboard

The keyboard also plays an important role in reinforcing the bass line of our music. Please note: keyboard is not offered in Junior band.

North Sydney Demonstration School Band Handbook 2014

Page 12

Band members may hire school instruments through the Band Committee. These

instruments have been purchased by the NSDS Band program using funds raised from instrument hire and

fundraising efforts.

Instruments are only available for the school year and must be returned at the end of each year for servicing

and cleaning. Instruments will be issued in order of receipt of application and payment.

The school hires out instruments at a reduced fee to help ensure that the band remains accessible to most

students. The money collected from this goes to pay for purchasing new instruments, instrument repairs,

sheet music, music copyright licence and yearly servicing and instrument repairs.

In 2014 all instrument hire and usage fees will be required upfront prior to instrument allocation.

$220 - Instrument hire fee for Brass and Woodwind instruments ($70 is non-refundable)

$100 - Usage charge for instruments that remain at school (eg. Percussion & keyboard) ($40 is non-

refundable). NOTE: All percussionists and keyboard players are charged a usage fee to help us cover

the cost of keeping these instruments and amplifiers in sound working order and repairing /replacing

when required.

If you accept the hire of an instrument, the following conditions are deemed to apply:-

The equipment remains the property of NSDS Band

The student must only be the SOLE user of this instrument

The instrument is not insured whilst in your care, insurance for the instrument is your responsibility. We advise that you have it added to your portable contents insurance.

If the instrument is lost, stolen or irreparably damage the hirer agrees to pay the NSDS Band the FULL REPLACEMENT COST of the instrument.

Should it become necessary, instruments must only be repaired by a repairer authorised by the band

committee. If you feel an instrument needs repair bring this to the attention of the Band Committee. Do

NOT attempt your own repairs.

The student should seek instruction from his/her private tutor on how to care for his/her instrument when they are issued

Band will pay for up to two repairs per year as a result of fair wear and tear. Repairs required as a result of any damage caused by mishandling must be paid for by the hirer.

All equipment must be returned, clean and in good working order after the end of year event on a date to be advised

Reeds and other consumables are the responsibility of the hirer

Instruments must be returned within one week of leaving Band for any reason.

No refund will be given for part completion of a term and no refund will be made if a withdrawal is made

after the end of Term 2.

The rental fee is calculated as $70 + (130/4)*number of terms rented, and the minimum charged is $135.

This applies to instruments rented during the year.

DIRECTIONS IN MUSIC: Since 2010, the Band Committee has contracted Directions in Music (DIM) a company run by Phil Molloy to

work as the Band Director for our Band program. DIM’s roles is to develop the students’ musical skills

through rehearsals, performances, tutorials, the band camp and a range of other activities and functions

throughout the year.

DIM appoints Conductors for each band and runs a tutorial program for our students (each position is held

by professional musicians who are screened by DIM).

DIM directly administers band membership and tutorial fees per term, go to www.directionsinmusic.com.au

for payment details.

Band membership is $75 per term payable to DIM (this covers band membership and conductor’s fees at

rehearsals and performances). Please note: this fee is non refundable.

REHEARSAL TIMES:

Band Day Time

Junior Band Friday 7:45am – 8:50am Intermediate Band Wednesday 7:45am – 8:50am

Senior Band Thursday 7:45am – 8:50am

ATTENDANCE: All children are expected to attend rehearsals every week. Being a band member is just like being part of a

sport team. Students are expected to attend all the scheduled rehearsals and all of the performances. This

ensures that both the student and their band are able to achieve their best performance.

A band relies on a balance of sound, both at practice and in concert conditions. If a student doesn’t turn up,

it makes rehearsals less effective for the rest of the band and diminishes the quality of the performances.

If your child is unable to attend it is expected that the Band Co-ordinator (parent representative) or Band

Conductor is notified of your child’s inability to attend.

We ask that when your child joins the school band they are prepared to commit themselves for the entire

school year. Band is a commitment to the whole band unit (team). Parents before allowing your child to

withdraw from band please remind them of their commitment to band and please keep in mind that some

instruments do take a while to master, practice is the key.

Arrival for the morning rehearsal is 7:45am SHARP. It is important that all members of the band arrive at

this time so they can set up and be ready for a 7:50am start (and not interrupt rehearsal).

All students are required to assist with setting up of band equipment before practice and packing away after

practice.

Instruments, music folders and books are required for all rehearsals.

North Sydney Demonstration School Band Handbook 2014

Page 14

COMMITMENT: To ensure the success of our three bands at NSDS, it is important to view band membership as a long term

commitment. Students will progress from the Junior band to the Intermediate band and then to the Senior

band after that. Learning an instrument is not an activity which can be done on and off.

ROLE OF STUDENT:

To commit to being a member of the band on a long term basis.

All students are expected to have a high level of self-discipline. They must respect the Conductor and

have good listening skills and show respect to their fellow band members.

Inappropriate behaviour will not be accepted with the School Discipline Policy applying to the Band

Program.

There will be times when the students will be expected to sit quietly and listen to other band

members playing.

To attend all lessons, rehearsals and performances on time.

Practise on a daily basis and prepare for each rehearsal and tutorial.

Care for and maintain the instrument.

Bring your instrument, music folder, book, cleaning equipment and pencil to all rehearsals and

performances.

Assist with the setting up and packing up of ensemble equipment.

ROLE OF PARENT:

To support your child in every aspect of the band program including regular practice.

Ensure your child attends all rehearsals and lessons on time.

Ensure your child cares for and maintains the instrument.

To encourage your child in their musical endeavours and be an appreciative audience!

Where possible advise the band Co-ordinator, Conductor and tutor of your child’s absence prior to

rehearsals, lessons and performances.

To ensure all band fees and expenses are paid on a regular basis.

Participation in the Band program – as with any volunteer committee, parent help is vital. There are

many ways you can get involved and you efforts send a wonderful message to your child. Help can

range from supervising, setting up for concerts, photocopying sheet music to a position on the

committee. Please help if you can, you do not need musical experience, ALL HELP IS APPRECIATED.

PERFORMANCES: Throughout the year all bands take part in performances at school. These performances are an opportunity for band members to get used to performing in front of an audience, and for parents to see how their children are progressing. They also provide a showcase for the school’s band program. School Performances are listed on our Band Calendar, advertised in The Dem Newsletter.

North Sydney Demonstration School Band Handbook 2014

Page 15

School performances include but are not limited to the following:

Yamaha Festival - Senior Band Mid year band concert– all bands Education Week Festival of the Arts Junior concert – Junior band only Big Gig – invitation to Senior band Band performance concert (Leagues Club) End of year school BBQ

There may be additional external performances throughout the year such as competitions and band festivals

which occur out of school hours which the senior band students will be expected to attend.

CAMP: Band Camp is a compulsory annual event for all Senior and Intermediate Band members and it forms an

integral part of the Band Program. Camp is typically held in May/June each year.

The Band Director, Conductors and Tutors attend the camp and provide intensive rehearsals and small

instrumental tutorials that promotes team work and great musical growth for all band members. Students

often achieve more progress in these 2 days than a whole term’s effort.

Due to this rapid development, it really is important that all students attend the camp and we ask that you

give priority to the camp over other events that might be on at the time.

It’s not all hard work, students do have a lot of fun and time is found for some social and recreational

activity.

The Band camp is definitely one of the musical highlights of the band program.

The cost of the band camp is approx $220. This cost covers all accommodation, transport, conductors, tutors

and other band expenditure for the camp.

Junior Band do not attend the overnight camp but they will be required to attend a compulsory (offsite) full

day workshop. The Conductor and Tutors will attend the workshop to provide intensive rehearsals and small

instrumental tutorials. The cost of the workshop is TBA.

UNIFORM: All Band students are required to wear a band uniform for most school and external performances. Strict

adherence to Band uniform is required.

The band Shirt is $25 and can be purchased from the Band Committee.

The uniform is as follows;

Band Shirt

Blue pants/blue cullottes

HOW TO JOIN THE BAND:

1. Before applying for a place in the band program, parents and children should be aware of their

responsibilities as part of the band program. Please read this document carefully and retain for

future reference whilst your child remains in the program.

2 Discuss with your child the instrument choices. Remember not all children will get their first choice.

3 Hand in an instrument choice form prior to the cut off date.

4 Wait for the instrument allocation.

5 Upon instrument allocation, and acceptance into the band program, it is required that both the

parent and child sign the “BAND DECLARATION FORM” and return to the office.

6 If wishing to hire an instrument from the NSDS Band, please contact the instrument Co-ordinator.

7 DIM will contact you regarding rehearsal start times and tutorial.

Remember!

Choose a range of instruments and keep an open mind (Tick choices 1, 2 and 3 on the form)

Where possible, students will be given an instrument of their choice – but we cannot guarantee

this. It will depend on instrument availability and instrument fit for your child.

DIRECTIONS IN MUSIC: - TUTORIAL PROGRAM: In addition to the weekly rehearsals, all students involved in the Band Programme must undertake a weekly

private lesson.

The students need specialist instruction on the complexities of their instruments in a one to one situation to

ensure that they are learning the correct technique. Each instrument has particular requirements that can

only be taught by an experienced tutor who plays that same instrument.

Directions In Music run a tutorial program for our band students on NSDS school grounds and generally occur

after school. However, some tutors may be able to give morning tutorials if this is preferred.

Once instrument allocations are accepted, parents and students will be asked to nominate preferred days for

lessons, and your children will be given a suitable lesson time.

Parents are encouraged to take an active part in their child’s musical education by communicating directly

with the tutors and checking the children’s homework/information books regularly.

Depending on students numbers for some instruments it may be necessary to seek a tutor outside of school

particularly Horn, Bass Guitar and Keyboard. DIM will be able to provide assistance in sourcing the right

tutor.

To find out more about the tutorial program Directions in music offer please visit their website

www.directionsinmusic.com.au

PAYING TUTORS

All tutor payments will be invoiced by Directions In Music once per term approx. $36 per lesson.

MISSING LESSONS

It is sometimes necessary to miss lessons due to illness or multiple commitments. All parents are expected to

notify tutors and DIM well in advance (more than 24 hours notice) if a lesson is to be missed.

Lessons missed without notification must be paid for (except in extenuating circumstances)

Reciprocal obligations are placed on tutors when they are unable to attend a lesson.

Where tutors are unable to make a lesson, a replacement teacher will be organised by DIM in most

circumstances otherwise the invoice will be adjusted accordingly.

North Sydney Demonstration School Band Handbook 2014

Page 21

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR TUTORS:

Your child will learn the basic skills and techniques specific to their instrument. They will learn music literacy

as this is the basis of the band Programme.

Your tutor will choose suitable music for your child and should encourage performances of pieces in addition

to those provided by band conductors. This may include purchasing books.

Tutors should write down homework and practice schedules every week in the music book provided by DIM

for the students and parents to follow.

Parents are reminded that it is not the responsibility of the school or tutor to supervise the student before or

after their lesson.

PRACTICE:

Practice is an essential part of learning an instrument. Practice should be daily, initially for 20 minutes and

progressing to 30 minutes. Students who do not make a commitment to practice will find it hard making

progress and will fall behind the rest of the team.

Everyone knows that to be successful in any pursuit requires time and commitment, and that it can be a

bumpy ride along the way. This certainly applies when it comes to being part of a band, and practice is

definitely the key. An average school band rehearses for at least one hour per week, and any band director

will tell you there is no other time more valuable. However, this represents only a fraction of the preparation

time required for the band to reach its specific goals, after which the success of the band relies on the efforts

of the players at home.

The first step in developing a healthy practice routine is to get rid of the ‘practice’ part! Try approaching the

issue by using the word ‘playing’ instead. In most students this seems to invoke a sense of enjoyment from

playing their instrument at home rather than a seeing it as a chore. Secondly, try to provide a suitable

practice area such as a bedroom or study, which is free of distractions and other siblings. Thirdly, encourage

your child to perform for family and friends (pet dogs and cats are also good!) as much as possible and

LISTEN TO THEM YOURSELF! It is very easy to shut them out of earshot, but they are relying on your

encouragement.

OPTIONAL EXTERNAL EXAMINATION:

Tutors should discuss with you the possibility of sitting instrumental exams run by the Australian Music

Examinations Board (AMEB).

Regardless of your decision to sit exams, all students must be learning:

Scales (rudiments for percussion) Embouchure and tonguing exercises Studies Classical pieces Jazz pieces Band music
