Firstly, a big thanks to all of our Advisory Council members for attending our recent Annual General

Meeting. It is pleasing to see residents so passionate about their local environment. Our centre would fi nd it very hard to operate successfully without their support.

Our annual Working Bee will be held on Sunday 16th September. We are continuing the revegetation of Behms Forest – the last remaining remnant forest of its type in the area. After the 2011 clean up and the planting of over 300 trees, we have noticed certain species, unseen over the past 5 years, have returned to the forest. The Yellow-footed Antechinus, a small marsupial mouse has made a comeback to the forest. Students discovered a pair of them during a recent monitoring program. They are small aggressive insectivorous marsupials that feed nocturnally. We have also noticed a number of squirrel gliders using recently installed nest boxes in the forest and in our centre grounds. In fact, a beehive developed in one of our nestboxes. After sitting there for a month, our staff investigated the nestbox and had found the bees had left. On further inspection, an empty honeycomb and a fat, fast asleep squirrel glider were found. Great to see them back.

Over the past month we have had visits from Chatswood Hills SS yr 6, Mudgeeraba SS yr 7, Springwood Central SS yr 2, Springwood SHS yr 12 and Surfers Paradise SS Preps. We have also had an opportunity to work with Windaroo SS and Woodridge SS building some new garden beds.

We would also like to thank the local Progress Association for the kind donation of a BBQ for our centre. It will get plenty of use by the student and community groups that visit the centre. JWEEC Staff

Two priests decided to go to Hawaii on vacation. They were determined to make this a real vacation by not wearing anything that would identify them as clergy. As soon as the plane landed they headed for a store and bought some really outrageous shorts, shirts, sandals, sunglasses, etc.

The next morning they went to the beach dressed in their 'tourist' garb. They were sitting on beach chairs, enjoying a drink, the sunshine and the scenery when a 'drop dead gorgeous' blonde in a topless bikini came walking straight towards them..They couldn't help but stare. As the blonde passed them she smiled and said 'Good Morning, Father ~ Good Morning, Father,' nodding and addressing each of them individually, then she passed on by. They were both stunned. How in the world did she know they were priests? So the next day, they went back to the store and bought even more outrageous outfi ts. These were so loud you could hear them before you even saw them! Once again, in their new attire, they settled down in their chairs to enjoy the sunshine. After a little while, the same gorgeous blonde, wearing a different coloured topless bikini, taking her sweet time, came walking toward them. Again she nodded at each of them, said 'Good morning, Father ~ Good morning, Father,' and started to walk away. One of the priests couldn't stand it any longer and said, 'Just a minute, young lady.' 'Yes, Father?' 'We are priests and proud of it, but I have to know, how in the world do you know we are priests, dressed as we are?' She replied, 'Father, it's me, Sister Kathleen.

The recent Gainsboroughs Art Awards which was started in 2011 by MIRVAC was a huge success. On opening night the overall winner and recipient of $10 000 was Queensland artist, Scott Wilmot Bennett with his exceptional work entitled Electric Light. "Awards such as The Gainsboroughs, and supporters such as Mirvac are so important for artists because without them, we would rarely ever be able to make a career in art.", Scott said. Chief judge and offi cial patron of The Gainsboroughs, Mr Don Waters says he was

thrilled with the calibre of entries. “The artworks are testament to a thriving culture of dedicated and motivated artists on the Gold Coast, throughout Queensland and across Australia. Don kindly donated one of his own works entitled Eagle Eye to be raffl ed with proceeds going toward the prize pool for next year. Eagle Eye is worth over $5000 and tickets at $20 each available from MARG WATERS 5546 1272 OR CONTACT PROMEDIA’S KARLA SIMPSON OR PAUL WILSON ON 5593 2011.

CANINE OSTEOSARCOMA

Bone cancer (osteosarcoma) is the most common primary tumour of bones in dogs. It usually affects the long bones in the limbs of large and giant breed dogs. This tumour mainly affects male dogs from midlife to old age.Clinical signs are mainly related to pain at the cancer site. So lameness, swelling and lethargy are commonly seen. Rarely there is a history of fracture repair at the site. The radiographic changes are so pronounced that often no further investigation is required. Many of these tumours spread rapidly to the lungs. Biopsy of affected legs can be done to confi rm a diagnosis, especially at the time of surgery if amputation is performed. The prognosis is very guarded to poor with many patients having survival times measured by the week or months after diagnosis.

Health & HappinessFOOD FRIENDSHIPFOOD FRIENDSHIP

It is time we rediscovered our friendship with food. It nurtures and sustains us to live and provides us with the

energy to fulfi l our desired missions while we are alive. We therefore need to consider giving this friendship more respect and share our gratitude and appreciation for its infl uence on our lives; by doing this we honour ourselves whilst also enjoying food’s nutritious infl uence.

By using all of our senses, including the sixth, we are given the best opportunity to appreciate the quality and multidimensional attributes food has to offer us. We can be involved with food, for example when we shop for our groceries, instead of rushing and getting whatever will suffi ce or simply buying the cheapest, we could put the time aside to be able to take our time to choose the best quality we can afford. We do this by looking, feeling, smelling and even listening for the freshest colour and texture available (if organic, even better). We could choose food colours that represent the colours of a rainbow; by trying to include as many as we can in a meal this will titillate not only our sense of sight, but also our holistic self and our bodies will digest different nutrients that each of the colours offer. When we are in the process of food shopping, we could also consider the path the food took to get to the shelves.

The relationship becomes deeper when we also prepare the food using our senses. Instead of watching the television during preparation, (e.g. dinner), consider putting on some soft music in the background, or a type that you and the family enjoy or will complement the meal,

for example upbeat salsa/Latin-American music if you are preparing a Mexican dish. Your sixth sense assists you to perceive and think about the food and consider the path it has taken to get to your table. There is a respectful ritual some people and cultures practice; you visualise and give thanks and gratitude to the people who planted the seeds, harvested, prepared and delivered the food, and to Mother Earth for supplying the nutrients via the elements and nature. Should they be eating any form of meat, they also give thanks and gratitude to the animal for the sacrifi ce it has made to allow them the nutrients to live and be healthy.

When eating, involve and enrich your senses; let’s turn the distracting television off, and engage with our food. Surround yourself with people you love, tableware you enjoy, savour the aromas of the meal, eat under soft light, play light music in the background whilst enjoying conversation and laughs. When on your own, connect with your food by using all of your senses; how does it feel, taste, and move in your mouth.

By adopting a healthy relationship with food we will surely enjoy, respect and appreciate it. This can only be benefi cial for ourselves as we not only experience a new multidimensional lifelong friendship with the enrichment of all the six senses, but by truly enjoying the food in its entirety the body will absorb the nutrients better and we will have a better quality of life, physically, emotionally, spiritually and socially.

❤ Now and then it is good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.

Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) Jacobs WellWelcome to Jacobs Well Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) news for September 2012.

This last month has been quite busy despite the cold winds that we’ve had recently. To warm things up a boat was on fi re at the Bedrooms (North side of South Stradbroke) and we looked aft er the owner who was quite concerned. It seems that the owner had left a gas burner going and away she went.

A yacht was moored outside the offi ce at Jacobs Well unti l we noti ced that it was drift ing away and, with the owner on board, we towed it back to a safer positi on. A more serious event was when we transported a heart att ack victi m back to the mainland and the ambulance took over.

One of the Jacobs Well boats was out on a training run up by the Jumpinpin bar whenthe crew noti ced a boat over-turned with 2 people in the water! It was very fortunate for them that the VMR boat was close at the ti me. It is a ti mely reminder to always log in with the VMR so that if you do get into diffi culti es a rescue can be att empted as soon as possible. If you have crab pots please remember to make sure that

they are not in a channel, there is nothing worse than having a crab pot line wrapped around your prop (or losing the crab pot!).

As always, before you go out in your boat just give us a call at the VMR and we will log you on and should anything happen to you we will have all your details to hand. This service is provided to all boats whether you are a member of the VMR or not. To become a member only costs $70 per year and then all your details are available if you should have a mishap with your boat and a free tow (subject to certain conditi ons) will get you back home. Non-members will also receive assistance but we do charge running costs at $150 per hour (or part thereof).

Also we need a local volunteer person that can spare a few hours on a Tuesday to be trained up to help us with memberships and other offi ce duti es. Please give the base a call on 5546 1100 and ask for Margaret or Sue; thanks. To become a member of the VMR just contact us on 07 5546 1100 and we will take your parti culars; payment can be made by credit card. To log on just call the same number or contact on VHF Channel 82. Our website for further informati on is www.vmrjw.org.au.Happy boati ng.

Yesterday Geoff was getting ready for bowls, when he put his shirt on, he realised he has been a bit slack on his training regimen of late, as it was a bit tight, while he was playing he was struggling with the tight shirt, it was not even covering his plumber's crack. Col commented as to why he didn't have a pocket, Geoff shrugged and said "It was one of my old shirts"Halfway through the days bowling, Norelle having spotted it was indeed a ladies shirt, walked up to Geoff and said why are you wearing Jane's shirt?Geoff embassingly looked across to the other side of the bowling green to see Jane who didn't have a clue, wearing a shirt nearly to her knees and yelled across the green to her "Why are you wearing my Shirt" The whole club resounded in up-roarus laughter, after a quick trip to the sheds and a quick change both were a little more comfortable Geoff is now known as a cross dresser - and Jane? (Well,Jane is Jane)

WILFUL DAMAGE TO POLICE VEHICLEThe faithful Jacobs Well 4WD for the past 7 years has been very busy but it was ti me to exchange it for a brand new vehicle. You will noti ce the new appearance of the vehicle, which includes a loud speaker from within the vehicle to assist us to get your att enti on if required. In all those years it has never been damaged by off enders.

Unfortunately aft er 6 days of the vehicle being in our possession, under the dark of night, pusillanimous cowardly off enders have targeted my residence with black spray paint, causing signifi cant damage to the rear Pod of our vehicle and one of our personal vehicles, with a message regarding police. With small mindsets the off enders may indeed boast about this brave and fearless off ence, so if anyone hears these challenged persons boasti ng of their deeds, please contact Jacobs Well Police Beat as I would love to have a litt le chat with them.

The new secondary school located at Dixon Drive, Pimpama will open in January 2013 with Year 7 and 8.John Thornberry has been recently appointed Principal of the new school. Jacobs Well is within the schools catchment area. The school, which is yet to be named, gives parents an option of moving Year 7 students to High School. It is expected the school will open within the hours of a normal school day 8.45 am to 3.00 pm. This may vary slightly to work in with local primary schools and public transport schedules. The schools primary focus will be on personalising the learning experience for each child. This means focusing on the relationship between the teacher and the student, using technologies to engage and enrich learning and making innovative use of our learning spaces. I look forward to working alongside Mr. Thornberry as we enter this exciting new venture together as a community.

Beenleigh and District.

THE MOST GLORIOUS, MOST PRODUCTIVE AND MOST INDUSTRIOUS PROVMCE IN THE QUEEN

STATE OF THE COMMONWEALTH

WITH settlement dating back to the early 'Sixties of last century, the district, of which

Beenleigh is the centre, is regarded as being one of the oldest settled and richest agricultural areas of the State. The original settlers proved not only good agriculrists, but colonists of whom Queensland has just cause to be proud, and to-day fine homes, well-cultured farms and choice dairy herds tell their own story of the success that has attended their efforts from time to time. The Beenleigh district is well favoured as regards its nearness to markets, soils, climate aud rainfall. The district possesses a great variety of soils, ranging from rich volcanic scrub soil on the higher elevations to alluvial soil pockets along the banks of the Logan and Albert Rivers. Throughout the whole area the beauty of the landscape and the health giving benefits of its bracing climate make it an ideal place of occopation for the man who follows rural pursuits. Closley associated with these early days of settlement, and with the growth and progress of the town and district, are many names that almost

breathe the spirit of pioneering enterprise- Such names as Rehfeldt, Kleinschmidt, Dauth, Heck. Schneider, M'Cready, Doherty! Thorsborne, Savage, Buchbach, Stollznow, Radke, Shailer, Holzapfel, Heinemann, Lubach and many others are household words throughout the Beenleigh district to-day. Beenleigh, as the centre of a rich and prosperous area, has many advantages over other centres that are both larger and per- haps of more commercial importance. It is situated within 24 miles of Brisbane, on the Main South Coast. line and a little over 21 miles by main road to the capital. In addition it is within an hours journey by car of several of the best known health and tourist resorts, the roads passing through Beenleigh. Beenleigh was proclaimed a Shire on November 11, 1879, and is one of the few local authority bodies in Queensland to have com- pleted 50 years' service as such. The Shire area is about 100 square miles in extent! has a population of approximately 2,500, and comprises four divisions. has a rateable value of £136,000, and annual revenue of approximately £5,000. Surveyed roads throughout the Shire total 170 miles, in addition to between 12 and 13 miles of gazetted main roads. The Council has modern. roadmaking plant, and good roads are a feature of the Shire area.

AGRICULTGRAL PRODUCTIONS. The Agricultural products are sugar-cane, maize, potatoes, arrowroot, lucerne, panicum and other hay crops.

SUGAR GROWING. For many years sugar growing activities have been carried on extensively in and around Beenleigh, the rich quality of the district soils, with their good natural drainage, making the locality suitable in every way for the production of cane of a high density. Some idea of the importance of the industry to the district in the early days of settlement, and the number engaged, can be had from the fact that over 30 sugar mills were at one time in existence. To-day though not so largely cultivated, there is still a fair area under sugar and (particularly around Pimpama Island, Norwell, Eagleby and Alberton) The most important sugar mill in the district at the present time is that on Pimpama Island (known as the Rocky Point Mill). Owned by Messrs. W. H. Heck and Sons Pty. Ltd. The original mill, which was built by Mr. W.H.Heck's father 40years ago, was capable of treating up to 800 tons of cane during the season.(More of this series in the next issue) Page 4Page 3

Woongoolba plans for new Preps in 2013!

Woongoolba State School has commenced plans to welcome new Prep students to the school in 2013 by announcing its Prep Information Session is to be held on Wednesday September 5.

The school, whose leadership philosophy: ‘Woongoolba: We are leaders’ won the 2012 Regional Showcase Award for Excellence in Leadership, is excited to welcome a new group of students for 2013.

‘I always enjoy having new students join: ‘The school of leaders’, said Principal David Cramb. ‘At Woongoolba, we start teaching the principles of leadership, responsibility and attitude right from day one of Prep,’ he added.

Woongoolba has also been recognised in 2012 by Kids Matter: a national mental health and wellbeing framework for primary schools as a leading school in establishing a positive school culture under the ‘We are Leaders’ initiative.

‘Interest in enrolling at our school has been increasing since we have been lucky enough to be recognised

for the great work of our staff and students’, Mr Cramb added. ‘I think parents are keen to have their students in a community-based smaller school which combines traditional values with innovative and supportive approaches to learning. We don’t teach children, we teach every child.’

The school will commence the transition process to Prep in term 4 with the commencement of its pre-Prep program.

Parents can contact the school on 5547 4333 or email the Principal on [email protected] if seeking further information.

After both Paddy and Mick were both laid off they went to the unemployment offi ce. When asked his occupation, Paddy answered, "Knicker Stitcher.. I sew da elastic onto ladies' knickers and thongs." The clerk looked up Knicker Stitcher on his computer and fi nding it classifi ed as unskilled labour, he gave him £80 a week unemployment pay. Mick was next in and when asked his occupation replied, "Diesel Fitter." Since a Diesel Fitter was a skilled job, the clerk gave Mick £160 a week. When Paddy found out he was furious. He stormed back into the offi ce to fi nd out why his friend and co-worker was collecting double his pay. The clerk explained, "Knicker Stitchers are unskilled labour and Diesel Fitters are skilled labour." "What skill?" yelled Paddy, "I sew da elastic on da knickers and thongs, then Mick puts 'em over his head and says, 'Yep, diesel fi tter'!”

Beer Brats (Bratwurst) Recipe Prep Time: 5 minutesCook Time: 25 minutesTotal Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:• 2 teaspoons olive oil or butter, divided use • 6 bratwurst sausages (see Note) • 1 large sweet onion, sliced into 1/4-inch rings • 6 ounces (half a can or bottle) beer (see Note)

Preparation:

Heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil or butter in a large Dutch oven. Brown bratwurst sausages until deep golden brown. (Do not puncture the sausages or they will become dry.) Remove to a platter.

To the drippings, add the remaining teaspoon of olive oil or butter and the sweet onion rings. Toss the onions to coat with the oil. Cook, stirring often, until onions are limp and golden but not brown.

Return the bratwurst to the onions and add the beer. Cook over medium heat, turning midway through, until beer has cooked down to a syrup, about 12 to 15 minutes.

Bratwurst may be served on buns with the onions or as an entree.

Yield: 6 servings

Note: Feel free to use this method with hot dogs, Italian sausage, knockwurst, or just about any link sausage. Dark beer gives a richer fl avor, but a standard commercial lager will work just fi ne.

IT TALKA Brief History of Personal Computing – Part I

The PC-Bible, Genesis 1:1In the beginning Bill created MS/DOS.And Bill saw that it was dodgy. And Bill said: Let there be Windows. And there was Windows. And you could multi-task until it crashed...

Of the major players in the brief history of Personal Computing, none have divided opinion more than Bill Gates and his company Microsoft. Fear and loathing in Silicon Valley is a daily reality, its vistas littered with the mangled remains of companies which dared to tussle with Bill.

Digital Research (CP/M), IBM, Atari, Commodore, Novell, DEC, SUN Microsystems and Apple, yes Apple, all died or nearly died at the hands of Bill (and from copious amounts of their own hubris).

Some put his truly phenomenal success all down to luck: being in the right place at the right time. Others proclaim him to be an evil genius, the anti-Christ even. Still others see him as an all-American hero, science nerd with uncanny business acumen and a saintly charitable streak to boot.

Apple disciples just hate his guts! Whatever he says, does or Microsoft produces, well, it’s all stolen from Apple anyway, it’s inferior and it sucks, big time!

I have had my gripes with Microsoft products from time to time, but would like to remind Bill’s detractors of one curious fact: While Apple’s own god, Steve Jobs, was reportedly as capricious and arrogant as the last king of France and any number of other PC industry personalities ranged from plain weird to positively deranged, Bill is married with three kids, quietly retired in 2008 and is devoting his retirement to running a charity. Not a single character fl aw has made it into the news; no blondes or brunettes having had to fend off his (un)wanted advances, no crazy pet project having been pursued with destructive focus. He has never been stopped speeding while drunk and most curious of all, his cashed-up charity has not spend a single dollar on fi nding the fountain of youth; trying instead to fi nd solutions to the problems of those who are most in need.

The fact that he tried and almost succeeded in building a monopoly by bleeding his competitors dry in the courts or just swallowing them up (not unlike any number of corporate giants before him), seems wholly out of character. Oh, but he did build a really, really big house with all manner of electronic gadgets – bad Bill!

As to the quality and usefulness of his products, I suspect that our frustrations with them were as much a function of their undeniable fl aws as they were with their intimidating

rapid rise, in the workplace and at home. Would we have been better off if, say, we had all used Apple PC’s instead? I leave that for you to ponder...

Bill Gates is certainly not the only player in the history of personal computers, but he is easily the most important and best known. He reigned supreme for almost 30 years and as the era of the PC is coming to an end, it remains to be seen if his chosen successors can keep Microsoft relevant or even viable.

As for me, I have given Microsoft the best years of my life, but I am not complaining. It’s been challenging, frustrating, rewarding and inspiring. I have no regrets, wouldn’t want to live in any other time, have had a ball.

So here’s to Bill Gates! May he be remembered as an inspired and inspiring human being in the brief history of personal computing and his products as a right royal pain in the ass! (Photo's downloaded from Wikipedia & Public Domain) disgracefoold

Barley visible to the naked eye, mites wreak havoc this time of year, sucking the sap of azaleas, cyclamen, citrus and vegtables, particularly beans and tomatoes. related to ticks and spiders, they live on the underside of foliage, and populations rapidly increase in hot, dry conditions. Telltale signs are distorted and bubbled foliage, or slivering and mottled foliage, usually accompained by fi ne webbing. Control with spray and clean up effected plant parts
