They supply it because people often use it as camping bedding. For decorative fabric, I suggest Ben Franklin or Fabric Boutique which both offer interesting and diverse uphol- stery remnants and other options. You should describe what you want to do and ask for assistance finding a fabric that would work for upholstery. I’ve done many versions of upholstered headboards. And I like all of them because they were styled appropriately for specific situations. One is a blend of clean contemporary lines and soft, feminine curves. A rectangular upholstered center is bordered by a large frame covered in a faux leather treatment. The faux leather treatment I created using craft paper which I stained dark brown and waxed. Because craft paper is fibrous, when it is stained and waxed, the leather illusion is quite believable and beautiful. Sconces with built-in touch light dimmers were installed in the frame. These curvy, sparkly sconces are func- tional, feminine and reminiscent of jewelry. They balance the masculine-feminine feel of this bed perfectly. Another creation was styled for a guest room meant to feel like a B&B getaway. In this case, a blue and yellow col- or scheme drove me to use a fabric with a micro-plaid pat- tern and to make the headboard look like a wing back chair. While this headboard was a bit more complicated than flat upholstery, I simply attached the upholstered “wings” using L-Brackets fastened under the fabric. So it wasn’t too complex and it is a one-of-a-kind piece I created for a very special client and for a special guest room. The simplest type to make is just a rectangular upholstered headboard. But for one bed- room, curves were needed to break up the many straight lines in the room. So a scroll pattern fabric and a classically curved shape for the top of the headboard did just the trick. This classic look is not trendy (short-lived), and instead will always be stylish and can be recovered at any time to alter the look. To be at our best, and get the most out of life, we all need rest. So don’t skimp on any- thing related to it. Even if you have a tight budget, or are hesi- tant to commit to a particular style, don’t do without … make your bed! Erin Miller is the owner of Erin Miller Designs in Grass Valley, CA. They offer interior design and décor, and complete design and plan drafting services for remodels, additions, kitchens, baths, and custom homes. Erin can be reached at (530) 477-1401, or at erinmillerde- signs.com. MILLER: Continued from C8 CRYPTOQUOTE from New Jersey, shares her recipe: “Grate two bars of soap (I used 4.25-ounce Olay Shea Butter bars) with a fine cheese grater. Pour grated soap and 2 cups of water into a saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat until soap is dissolved, about five minutes. Cool slightly. The soap should have the con- sistency of whole milk at this point. Pour into bot- tles. You can top off your bottles with more water if you want. Cool overnight. The bodywash should have the consistency of melted ice cream when cooled. Use a nickel-sized dollop on your bath sponge and lather up! I’m going to get a year of use out of two bars of soap. I also replaced my facial cleanser with this. It even works well for shav- ing!” Sara Noel is the owner of Frugal Village, www.frugalvillage.com, a website that offers practical, money- saving strategies for everyday living.
