Congratulations Honored EducatorsThree district staff educators were recognized for their outstanding efforts at the annual Summit ESC Education Celebration in October. Ms. Trudy Zimmerman (Teacher of the Year), Ms. Lindsay Smith (Rookie of the Year) and Mr. John Berry (Lifetime Achievement Award) were nominated by the community, coworkers, colleagues and parents.

Ms. Trudy Zimmerman is a kindergarten teacher at Greenwood Early Learning Center. “Ms. Z” is known for the positive relationships she builds with students, parents and fellow staff members. She creates a learning environment where everyone feels they belong and succeeds in meeting the needs of all students. Ms. Z. has been awarded multiple grants for dramatic play items, chicken project items, math games, and books. She has been named the PTA Outstanding Educator and also received the Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award.

Ms. Lindsay Smith is a fourth-grade intervention specialist at Green Intermediate School and previously worked for Canton City Schools. Ms. Smith supports students in all content areas and has a way of bringing out the best in all students. She has a large amount of patience and always tries to figure out solutions no matter how difficult the challenge. Ms. Smith’s third-grade teacher, Mrs. Vansteenburg, had a great way of motivating students and building relationships and became her greatest influence in becoming a teacher.

What makes Ms. Smith a special teacher? “Ms. Smith greets us every day when we walk in by saying, ‘Hi, my loves!” and helps with reading.

Mr. John Berry is currently enjoying retirement having completed his last full year in the classroom at Green High School last spring. A love of nature and the outdoors led Mr. Berry to become a science teacher. Through the classroom, he shared his passion for science, nature, plants, and animals with his students. During his career at GHS, Mr. Berry has received the Outstanding Educator award and has been a significant influence in his students’ lives. Mr. Berry emphasized Ohio as an interesting ecological environment. He received grants to fund radio transmitters so students could track American toads and conduct frog surveys for the state. He took groups of students on backpacking trips introducing identification of local plants, animals, frog and bird species. Mr. Berry’s lessons of respect for nature and respect for each other remains with his students.Congratulations!

CPM Hits the MarkIn 2008, the district faced steadily declining math scores across all grade levels. Reversing that trend began with the challenge of knowing the process could take ten to twelve years. During this time, The Ohio State University sought out federal funds to be used to implement a three-year learning program and change the way math was taught in the state. Green embraced the opportunity for change, embraced the challenge in acceptance and implementation and the search for a new math curriculum began.

A math curriculum not only needs to fit department and district goals but must best support student learning and teacher implementation. College Preparatory Mathematics or CPM is a student-centered, problem-based curriculum focusing on how a student best learns and retains mathematics. The researched-based principles guiding the course are:

● Students should engage in problem-based lessons structured around a core idea.● Guided by a knowledgeable teacher, students should interact in groups to foster mathematical discourse.● Practice with concepts and procedures should be spaced over time.

CPM was a curriculum finalist. Many were skeptical, but the traditional setting of placing a teacher at the front of the room going through the motions of the same problem to be assigned for homework was not working. Solon, a well-respected district in all disciplines, was utilizing CPM and invited all Green math teachers to visit and observe.

The observations included a classroom of students talking and engaging with one another about math discourse as a team. Where one struggled, another offered a solution. Students sat facing each other. The teacher served as an active participant in the challenges and successes providing immediate corrective feedback. The post-visit vote was unanimous. CPM would become the turning point for math in Green. All children will learn math.

In 2015/2016, CPM was implemented in Algebra, seventh and eighth grade and piloted in Geometry. The following school year, Algebra 7, sixth grade and Honors Geometry were added. Pre-Calculus and AP Stats followed in 2017/2018. District math coaches Kourtney Groholy and Pam Steinkirchner have been instrumental in supporting teachers with CPM practice models, vertical alignment and math recovery.

The district math scores have soared. Specific courses and grade level scores now rank at the top of schools within the Stark County ESC, including the coveted #1 spot with several twos and threes. This spike in scores has caught the attention of several districts in the state. Green has become the “new” Solon.

This year, our Bulldog mathematics instructors have welcomed teaching teams from eight districts as far away as Athens and as close as North Canton and Massillon. All have left impressed. Some have come back for a follow-up mentorship.

Thank you for your support in the endeavor. The transition has been challenging at times. Staff and students are now embracing math, and the turnaround is one for all to be proud of and celebrate.

Billboard ContestThe Summit County Sheriff’s office, through support from State Farm®, challenged Summit County high school students to create a public service announcement (PSA) billboard to educate their peers about teen driver safety. The goal of the contest is to raise awareness around teen driver safety, involve young people in safety educational programs and have conversations around safe driving. Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens 16 to 19 years old in the United States.

Green High School art teacher, Allison Misutka, has been a supporter of this initiative for many years and has actively encouraged her students to enter. With her guidance and leadership, Green art students have once again been recognized as contest winners promoting teen driver safety.

A panel of judges selected the winning entries based on relevance, originality, creativity, aesthetic quality, and how well the message of teen driver safety is communicated through the design.

Willow Garfield-Jackson and Samantha Ferrar were selected as winners in this year’s contest.

Discovering classic board games.

The first Build a Better Bulldog Days took place on January 7th and 8th for all students at Green High School.

The goal of the two-day program was to offer students specifically designed sessions on different life skills, social-emotional development, diversity/inclusiveness, and healthy choices. These opportunities also layered into the district’s goal of instituting OLWEUS and creating a better school environment for students through their personal development.

The Olweus Program is a comprehensive approach that includes school-wide, classroom, individual, and community components. The program is focused

on long-term change that creates a safe and positive school climate. OLWEUS is the most researched and best-known Bullying Prevention Program available.

Build a Better Bulldog Days was put together in cooperation with our building and district administration, our teachers, and counseling staff.

Days were created to include two mandatory sessions on diversity and vaping and numerous options covering a wide range of topics created by our teachers. Each student created their own schedule, participating in five, 51-minute sessions. Over forty of our teachers provided sessions that included mindfulness/stress relief, Cooking 101, Basic Sewing, changing a tire, jumping a car battery, Japanese, making fly fishing lures, healthy skincare, pie and noodle making, martial arts philosophy, board games and many more. The two-day event would not have happened without the effort and input from the staff.

Special thank you to community partners Huntington Bank and Fed Ex who led students through credit scores, buying and financing, and resume/interview skills.

Feedback from students and staff was positive. Green High School is considering having Build a Better Bulldog Days become an annual event.

Willow received a $500 cash prize. Her winning entry was featured on a billboard at the corner of Manchester Road and State Road beginning November 4, 2019. Samantha received $100 award and her design was crafted into stickers that will be handed out at Summit County Sheriff events. Congratulations!

Girls of GreenThe Girls of Green is a community service club at Green High School. The mission and purpose of the club is to facilitate charitable opportunities for the members, promote giving back to the community in a number of different ways, and bettering the climate and culture of the school. Girls of Green, open to all females in the school, strives to support one another and others in the school, community and on numerous occasions the greater Northeast Ohio region. There are close to 80 young ladies involved in the club this year.

The club meets bi-weekly on Thursdays and the advisors are Mrs. Ashley Walton and Ms. Shannon Bowman. Mrs. Walton has been the group’s co-advisor for seven years and Ms. Bowman is beginning her second.

Officers met during the summer to plan events and causes for the 2019-2020 school year. Some of the planned events include(d): Kick for the Cure, Bulldog Dash, Blood Drives, a baby shower for area needy families, collection for Battered Women’s Shelter, crafting blankets for Akron Children’s Hospital, planning winter formal and assisting at Veterans Day.

The club hosted a self-defense class with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Paul and Deputy Dave were excellent with the participants, providing many good tips for defending themselves.

The fall months were busy and productive with several service events including assisting at the food bank and organizing a blood drive. The Akron-Canton Food Bank effort, organized by senior Girls of Green

officer Campbell Collinsworth, will help provide 31,540 meals for neighbors in need. October’s blood drive collected 47 pints blood which translates into 141 lives saved. Based on pints donated, the Vitalant blood collection company donates money back to GHS for scholarships.

On January 9th, the young ladies hosted a baby shower for Akron Pregnancy Solutions. Diapers, clothes, bath items and blankets were donated from throughout the district staff. The supported agency is located on Manchester Road and all the contributions will assist families in the greater Green area.

The Girls of Green is a wonderful example of the district’s Be Safe, Be Kind and Be Responsible motto. Thank you advisors, and thank you ladies!

BRAVEBRAVE (Boys Representing Achievement and Values Everyday) is a leadership group offered to 48 young men in seventh and eighth grade across two semesters. Now in its fourth year, the group meets once a week to achieve new skills and embrace values to promote success in life.

The mission of the group is to increase academic achievement, improve social/emotional skills and provide an opportunity for students to gain, define and use their leadership abilities. The young men engage in life skill lessons, interactive activities and student-driven community projects. Activities include lessons on goal setting, stress management, friendships, strategies for school success, teamwork and building confidence; invited speakers from the school, business and community to share wisdom and advice on achievement and values.

This year, BRAVE has focused its philanthropic efforts on providing extra assistance to families at Green Middle School through a scrunchie sale and working with Blessings in a Backpack.

Very special “scrunchies” were designed for the boys to sell with proceeds supporting much-needed items in the GMS pantry. Thus far, our BRAVE groups have sold $250.00 worth of scrunchies and will be purchasing toiletry items, laundry detergent, and personal hygiene items.

Mrs. Jennifer Doerrer, the Volunteer Coordinator for Blessings in a Backpack, recently spoke to both the seventh and eighth grade BRAVE groups on the need for the program in our district and on a societal level. The young men will be assisting at upcoming Blessings in a Backpack morning pack.

Eighth-grade BRAVE also welcomed seniors Donovan O’Neil and Aiden Morgan, both alumni from the very first BRAVE group, to speak about thriving in high school. The peer to peer mentorship was a huge success.

Thank you to advisors Mrs. Textor, Ms. Bowman and Mrs. Custer for their leadership and support of the development of these young men.

Middle School NewsMiddle School NewsChain ReactionChain Reaction is a service club open to any and all 7th and 8th graders who have a desire to build a caring school environment where individual differences are embraced & respected. Approximately 35 members meet once a week after school. Mrs. Custer serves as the club’s advisor.

The goal and focus of the club are to create a “ripple effect,” a Chain Reaction of kindness and compassion which fosters a safe school environment where all students feel welcome and accepted. Socially, the ripple effect describes the phenomenon where one decision or action can affect situations not directly related to the initial interaction – thus increasing its impact several times over. Club members learn individual actions and decisions do have an impact on the bigger community.

The club has been very active this year. Members hosted a “Welcome to Green” new student luncheon, wrote personal letters of appreciation to over 25 veterans for Veteran’s Day and crafted get well cards for a fellow student with a medical need. A special veteran received over 30 handwritten birthday cards for his 100th birthday! Chain Reaction lent support to teachers, creating posters to highlight their strengths and creatively drew their appreciation for the staff with chalk drawings on the sidewalks. Red Ribbon Week was highlighted with a bulletin board supporting the anti-drug campaign and the homeless were assisted with special bags full of personal items.

Most recently, club members decorated Starbucks coffee cup holders with positive and inspirational messages. Green residents who frequent the Massillon Road Starbucks might receive one of these special designs.

Judgment and criticism at any age is a roadblock to bonding and sharing. Chain Reaction is encouraging students to see the value and worth of every person with hands-on experience to be the change they want to see in the world and challenges each member to make a difference.

Green Middle School had three winners in the Summit County Safety Poster Contest. Alexa Arutyunyan (8th

grade) - 2nd place “Don’t use Alcohol!” Caroline Babbitt (8th grade) - 3rd place “Don’t use Alcohol!”

Trey Upton (7th grade) - Creative Category “Say No to An Unwanted Touch.” GMS art teacher Sheri Murray

GIS Receives State’s Momentum AwardGreen Intermediate School has earned the State Board of Education’s Momentum Award. The Momentum Award is presented by the State Board of Education

and recognizes schools for exceeding expectations in student growth for the year.

To achieve the Momentum Award distinction, a school must earn straight A’s on all Value-Added measures on the report card. The school or district must have at least two Value-Added subgroups of students, which includes gifted, lowest 20% in achievement, and students with disabilities. Only 173 Ohio schools earned the distinction for the 2018-2019 school year.

“Across the state, there is increased student exposure to poverty and social stressors,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria. “These schools are succeeding in meeting the needs of the whole child, and helping students take full advantage of educational opportunities. Congratulations to the students, teachers and administrators at these schools for the impressive success we celebrate with these awards.”

Congratulations to the staff, administration, students and families at Green Intermediate School!

Drama delivers Life LessonsMs. Josef’s fourth grade classes enjoyed studying all elements of Drama, including performing. The final drama unit included short plays performed for classmates. Proper costuming was critical and special thank you to Mrs. Deitle for loaning many!

Each play was a fractured fairy tale delivering an important theme or message. Audience members were challenged to identify the theme of each play as they enjoyed the performance.

Students in the photo performed the play The Cheetah and Sloth, a story similar to the classic The Tortoise and the Hare. Characters included: Sports Announcer, Sloth Cheetah Racing Judge, Audience featuring various animals (rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, birds) and Commercial Voice.

In the end, Sloth never gave up, even though Cheetah started out way ahead. Sloth just kept moving and crossed the finish line. Slow and steady wins the race!

The D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program is an internationally recognized, model program created in 1983 by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District. D.A.R.E. provides students kindergarten through high school with the skills necessary to recognize and resist pressures to experiment with drugs and to avoid violence. Lessons emphasize self-esteem, decision making, interpersonal communications skills, and consequences of drug abuse, conflict resolution and positive alternatives to substance abuse. Other topics include recognizing different types of bullying, how to safely report bullying situations and reinforcing who students can reach out to for help/assistance outside of their family.

The most important facet of D.A.R.E. is the use of specially trained police officers. Summit County Deputy Sheriffs Leigh Burdette and Michael Beers deliver the curriculum to Green Intermediate School facilitated for fifth graders. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office has been making a difference in children’s lives with the D.A.R.E. program throughout the county and here in Green for over twenty years.

Upon completion of the 12 week classroom program, Deputies Burdette and Beers require students who wish to “graduate” write an essay sharing lessons learned in D.A.R.E. and how it may be applied to their future. Deputies Burdette and Beers select

two essays from each class, not an easy task! Essay winners receive a medal and other D.A.R.E. memorabilia.

The GIS D.A.R.E. graduation was held on Friday, January 10th. All graduates were recognized at a special celebration with their families, received their certificate of completion and authentic DARE shirt. Book TastingMiss Dearing and Mrs. Krukemeyer’s students were introduced to new reading genres and a new choice of books with a special “Book Tasting” activity. Students were motivated to indulge in the experience thanks to the café, “Starbucks” type atmosphere.

Traveling to the café tables, students were exposed to genres that included poetry, biographies, mysteries and a variety of holiday books. Each table and each genre included a “graffiti” placemat and pamphlet. Students were given time to write words, phrases, and quotes from books to represent their experience.

Book tasting was a huge success!

New Year’s ResolutionsMr. Seifert’s students spent the first few days of the New Year writing New Year’s resolutions. The first step of the lesson was to learn the technique of brainstorming. Students created lists of what they were good at and what they wanted to improve on.

Next, students learned a goal is something personal to achieve and had to be measurable with specific and explainable steps. The goals were separated by categories such as home, school, and sports and written out.

Once the most important goal was selected, each second grader created their own self-portrait. After some proofreading, hats with their number one goal listed joined the self-portrait.

Keep up the great New Year effort!

The PBIS StorePositive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS), is a broad range of strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes in school communities while preventing problem behavior.

With the help of PTA volunteers, GPS students may “shop” once a week at the PBIS store. The store is considered a Tier One in the PBIS support system. This level of support involves student and family members to increase social/emotional skills, builds consistency across the building and provides a common language and expectations for students.

Staff members keep a watchful eye out for students exemplifying the Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Responsible, Be Bulldog Strong initiative and recognize the effort with special “gotcha” tickets. Students have the opportunity to spend all in one week or save and collect.

There are eleven options of activities and items to select from, ranging from Wednesday Ice Cream for 15 tickets to Kickin it With Kiwi (the great therapy dog) for 50 tickets. PTA volunteers man the stations and help the students select.

The PBIS store has been instrumental in reducing problem behavior, improved building safety, improved social-emotional competence and increased positive school climate and culture.

Preschool Registration is Open Greenwood Preschool registration for the 2020-2021 school year has begun.Greenwood’s Developmental Early Childhood Preschool Program is an integrated classroom, one which includes children with a wide range of developmental levels and abilities, typically developing students and students with disabilities. All preschool classrooms have at least one classroom teacher and one teacher assistant to support student needs. The preschool program is a tuition-based program.

Greenwood is in the process of scheduling screening appointments for typical preschool students interested in attending our program in the 2020-2021 school year, and who will be 4 years old prior to August 1st, 2020. As in past years, the program will be filled on a lottery basis, NOT first come basis. This method will alleviate the stress of getting to the school on a specified day.

Once all screenings are complete, student names will be entered into the lottery. Selected students’ families will be notified. It is anticipated approximately forty eight peer model students will be selected.

It is imperative to visit Greenwood ELC to register for one of the screening times prior to February 7th, 2020.

Screening Dates: February 14th 9:00-10:00 am OR 10:15-11:15 am • February 21st 1:00-2:00 pm OR 2:15-3:15 pm

Students who register after this day will be placed on a waiting list and could be contacted for a later date in the event that openings remain.

A 2020-2021 Preschool Brochure is located on the homepage of the Greenwood Early Learning Center’s website. Current Greenwood Early Learning Center Preschool Students do not need to register for the 2020-2021 Preschool or Kindergarten school year. For more information, please contact the school at 330-896-7474. The preschool staff is looking forward to serving the Bulldogs Class of 2033.

Class Act Scholar Program Congratulations to Katie DeSmith who was recently recognized for participating in the Class Act Scholar Program and the annual Summit Education Initiative School Readiness Summit. Ms. DeSmith is a Preschool Teacher in the Developmental Preschool Program.

Katie is an excellent teacher who shows patience and understanding working with some of our youngest Bulldogs, laying a strong foundation for all of her students to succeed academically, socially and emotionally. She is a leader within the building, serving on both the District and Building Leadership Teams and played a major role in Greenwood meeting the Preschool Step Up to Quality requirements of the state.

Over the course of the next 7 months, Class Act scholars will complete the 10-session CLASS-based course entitled, “Making the Most of Classroom Interactions.” One of the unique features of the CLASS Act Scholars program is the individualized feedback and coaching provided to each of the scholars.

Ms. DeSmith volunteered for this opportunity, always looking to improve her instruction for her preschoolers.
