NMC Students Explore Careers behind the
Scenes in Media and The Arts Lights. Camera. Actions! Grade 9
students at NMC were treated to an
exceptional week of experiences related
to Film, Theatre, and Broadcast Media.
Thanks for the work of many Winnipeg
Professionals, our students have the
opportunity to explore a number of
different areas behind the scenes of media
and the Arts. They started their week at
the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre for a
tour of the production areas and a first-
hand view of the production Million Dollar
Quartet and Black Coffee. Students then
had the opportunity to meet and work with
Lighting Designer, Scott Henderson, who
gave them a taste of the world of lights.
Scott taught them to hang, cable, and
focus lights, and then showed how those
lights work together to create an effect.
The next day students toured MidCan Studio with Film Training Manitoba where they
learned about the Film industry in Winnipeg from Benjie Aytona and Kelly Dodds. This
experience was followed by a full day at CBC radio. Students got a tour, sat in a story
meeting, created a mock broadcast and then were interviewed live! The students also
had the opportunity to attend a show at MTYP, tour the stage and backstage area and
meet with the director, meet with Rap Artist Pip Skid at Graffiti Arts Studio, and finally,
learned all about Broadcast Media and New Media Design from the Louis Riel Arts and
Tech teachers.
