President’s Message

Dear Toastmasters, The NMC Corporate Chapter has an awesome history. Ever since its inception in 2002 under the patronage of our beloved Dr. B.R. Shetty, the Chapter has grown from strength to strength. This wonderful Chapter is indeed an ongoing ‘University’ imparting excellent communication and leadership skills. In fact, the most beautiful aspect of this Chapter is that incredible feeling shared by its members as belonging to one big family of loving, caring and dedicated toastmasters. Our ‘family’ always strives to provide high quality meetings and genuinely works towards the growth and enhancement of its members in the true spirit of Toastmasters. In short, we at NMC Corporate Chapter are one big family with one specific goal – “Achieving Greatness Together.” This beautiful theme inspired by the present International President of Toastmasters Pat Johnson, is our Chapter’s theme for the current year. As President of this Chapter, I have one great commitment which is not only to elicit the greatness that is already there in our members but also to reinforce the Toastmasters program. Now, what is the Toastmasters program all about? Simply put, it is a powerful tool that empowers us to succeed by breaking the bonds of captivity. As rightly said by Mark Caine, “The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you find yourself.” Now to reinforce the Toastmasters program, our NMC Corporate Chapter family will work as one cohesive unit to enable each member to move through the various levels of communication and leadership development. This am sure will be done in small but effective stages – one person at a time, one assignment at a time ultimately resulting in achieving outstanding success in its true sense. And my interpretation of success is, “Becoming a better human being through Toastmasters.” In this year and the years to come, we will continue to challenge ourselves as one strongly bonded family and impart those fine human impulses of love, care, giving, sharing through this magnificent chapter to the world within and beyond. In conclusion, I quote Pat Johnson, “I am a better community member, parent, employee, leader, friend and manager because of what I have learned in Toastmasters.” Yes, dear members, let us pledge to be better human beings through the fascinating program of Toastmasters and let us once again bring back the glory of this brilliant chapter by breaking our self imposed bonds of captivity, by shrugging off our lack of self esteem and lack of confidence. We will achieve excellence. We are a family – a loving, caring united family!

Dear Toastmasters, The Newsletter is the voice of our Toastmasters club and so is baptized as Corporate Voice. This first issue of the Newsletter for the current year is being released as we are preparing to bid farewell to the scorching and sweltering summer. While the end of summer is marked by somberness in our houses, no child wants to go back to school and no adult likes to miss those leisurely days of summer vacations. We at Toastmasters Clubs welcome its end because we will now find our members back to facilitate conducting more organized and structured meetings.

Theme of current issue is ACHIEVEMENT. Accordingly, as you browse through pages of this issue, you will find that we have focused on the Clubs achievement through the years, members achievement at the Club and DTAC levels etc.

Most of our members being away on holidays between July to September, it was a challenge to keep the meetings alive. Three joint meetings with the Spectrum Club proved to be an excellent solution; it not only enabled the different cultures to mix freely and learn immensely from each others strengths but also brought out the brotherhood feelings we have between different Toastmaster clubs. The biggest gain for me has been that I have few more fabulous friends now. We had another wonderful time celebrating the birthday of our member TM Akant Taurani during 187th meeting on 17th July 2010. We have animated these activities in this issue with extensive pictures.

For our readers who have an appetite for reading, we have included interesting articles both motivational and educational. You must also read the holidaying experience of one of our members to discover that world is such an inspirational canvas providing special moments and memories that we can carry for a long time.

I want to express my appreciation to everyone who has contributed to the success of Corporate Voice.

Trust you will savor this issue.

Best Regards,

Sanjiv Singh

Serve, Lead and Transform

Dear Toastmasters of NMC Corporate Chapter, It gives me immense pleasure to learn that the members of NMC Corporate Chapter are publishing the first issue of the chapter’s newsletter for the current year. This club has an amazing history of achievements and glory and it gives me pride to be associated with the club, as a club coach and mentor. NMC Corporate Chapter has its uniqueness of being the first corporate club in Abu Dhabi (Division H), although the Club is now open for members outside NMC. While we join the toastmasters program for different reasons, at the end of the day, this program helps us to become better individuals and human beings. Hard work and commitment is what makes a difference in us. We become better communicators and leaders, which in turn develop self-confidence. I strongly believe in the phrase that ‘Communication is not optional in one’s life’. In today’s competing world, we all need to equip ourselves with the skills of communication and leadership in order to prosper. All of us have decided to improve our lives through improving our skills, but it is a difficult task!! It takes real courage and determination to attend the first meeting as a guest, sit through the entire two hour session and then join as a member. Let us congratulate ourselves for our determination to continue the journey in the Toastmasters program. It is easy to give up; but it is expensive!! Unless we invest in ourselves, we run the risk of becoming obsolete and we fall behind in the race of life. In Division H, during the current year, we have given special emphasis to quality improvement to the entire toastmasters program which includes quality meetings, development of members, training of office bearers and judges. All the clubs in the division including NMC Corporate Chapter have been contributing to develop better human beings and communicating to promote better understanding and harmony in the society. Let us work together to have a better world for our future generation. “We achieve greatness together”-- Pat Johnson (Current International President).

Generally the clubs are open to anyone willing to join, above 18 years of age from College students to professional speakers, salespeople, attorneys, teachers, and retire. Generally the meetings are conducted in English. But Toastmasters has grown from being an English-only organization to one that develops communication skills in several languages. Each Club is, through a multi layered organization, connected to the apex body, Toastmasters International, Headquartered in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, USA. The organization has now grown into a mammoth one, with more than 250,000 members in more than 12,500 clubs in 108 countries. Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped people of all backgrounds become more confident in front of an audience. Thousands of corporations and government agencies sponsor in-house Toastmasters clubs as communication training workshops for their employees. Specialized clubs meet at military bases, colleges and universities, churches and prisons. There are Toastmasters clubs for senior citizens, professional groups, bilingual groups singles and the visually impaired. Between then and now more than three million men and women have benefited from the Communication and Leadership program of Toastmasters International. Shortly before his death in 1965 at the age of 87, Toastmasters founder Ralph C. Smedley reminisced: "As I look back at over half a century of connection with the Toastmasters movement, I am impressed by the fact that a simple idea put to work in so simple a manner, has grown into such an instrument for service for so many people. It must have met a real need." Indeed it does. We are all testimony to that fact.

THE TOASTMASTERS VISION Toastmasters International empowers people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. Through our member clubs, people throughout the world can improve their communication and leadership skills, and find the courage to change.

THE TOASTMASTERS VALUES Toastmasters International’s core values are integrity, dedication to excellence, service to the member and respect for the individual. These are values worthy of a great organization, and we believe we should incorporate them as anchor points in every decision we make. Our core values provide us with a means of not only guiding but also evaluating our operations, our planning and our vision for the future.

THE TOASTMASTERS MISSION Toastmasters International is the leading movement devoted to making effective oral communication a worldwide reality. Through its member Clubs, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening and thinking — vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership potential, foster human understanding, and contribute to the betterment of mankind. It is basic to this mission that Toastmasters International continually expand its worldwide network of clubs thereby offering ever-greater numbers of people the opportunity to benefit from its programs.

MISSION OF THE CLUB The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment, in which every member has the opportunity to develop and practice communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth

NMC Corporate Chapter Through the Years…

ACB CL Dr. Katrak

Over the years the club has changed its venue thrice. Initially, meetings took place on the 19th floor of the Green Building which later was demolished. Then the venue was shifted to the mezzanine floor of Foodlands Restaurant. Presently meetings are conducted in the huge well equipped basement auditorium of NMC Specialty Hospital. Very few clubs will be privileged to have such a spacious and better equipped venue for a meeting.

NMC Corporate Chapter Club was chartered on 13th December 2001 under the patronage of Dr. B. R. Shetty. Over the last nine years, right from the time TM Sudhir Shetty took over the reins, the club has always been in the limelight and at present it is at its peak under the leadership of TM Salim Sayyid. The various Presidents who have helped to build The NMC Corporate Chapter are: 1) Sudhir Shetty 2001 - 03 2) Dharmendra 2003 - 04 3) Dr. C. R. Shetty 2004 - 05 4) Dr. Umesh Shetty 2005 - 06 5) Dr. Katrak 2006 - 07 6) Gagan Preet Kaur 2007 - 08 7) Dr. Sumitha Nayak 2008 - 09 8) Dr. Kaveh 2009 - 10 9) Salim Sayyid 2010 - 11

The Club over the years has produced excellent speakers who have made the club proud at the DTAC level. In the Humorous speech competition, TM Dr. Katrak represented the club at DTAC in 2004 and 2007. He won the 1st runner up award in 2004, while TM Dr. Umesh was the 2nd runner up in 2005. TM Dr. Katrak represented Division H in the International speech category during DTAC 2010. Looking at the speaking skills of the new members, we are sure to have our members representing the club in all the contests at the DTAC next year.

The club has proved its versatility – communication or leadership skills – by achieving the President’s Distinguished Club award for 4 consecutive years from 2004 to 2007. The efforts and dedication its members has put in for achieving this laurel is highly commendable. The dazzling array of colorful ribbons in the Club banner speaks the glory themselves. This year it is well on track to achieve it once again by already achieving 4 out of the 10 possible points within a short period of 3 months thanks to the efforts of VP Education TM Sunil Kottarathil.

President TM Umesh Shetty receiving the award from the District Governor at DTAC 2006 held at Dubai, for the Club achieving 10 out of 10 DCP points before April end

TM Dr. Katrak won 1st runner up place in Humorous Speech contest at DTAC 2004

TM Dr. Umesh Shetty won 2nd runner up place in Humorous Speech contest at DTAC 2005.

The club which was previously only for Corporate members is now open to all. With the presence of talent from all fields of life the standard of the meetings has raised a lot and I am sure the members will take the club to even greater heights.

The club has been regularly conducting Youth Leadership Programmes for the kids during their vacations. Not only the participants improve their speaking and leadership skills immensely and also enjoyed the sessions. The most memorable function of the Club was the 100th meeting celebration held at Foodlands hall where all the members with their spouses were in traditional outfits. The fun which everyone had during the games and shows held by the club members and their family will be remembered for years. This year we will be completing 200 meetings, and I am sure the celebrations will be even more memorable.

Importance Of

Practice

ACS ALB Santhosh Shenoy It’s Saturday, you’ve been assigned to prepare a report for a meeting on Thursday. You try to find some time to put the PowerPoint slides together Sunday afternoon. Then, Monday goes by, then Tuesday, and suddenly it’s Wednesday night and you are now just putting your slides together. You stay at work late, finish it up and now you think you’re ready for the meeting on Thursday. But, where was the practice? Oops, you just didn’t have time. You show up Thursday morning, you make copies of your report in a hurry, zip into the conference room right as the meeting starts, then you are called to deliver your presentation. Your stomach is tied up in knots, you start to speak and your mouth goes dry. You stumble and stammer – then you read your PowerPoint slides to the group. You sit down and thank God that you got through it.

After the meeting your manager calls you into his office. He asks, “why you seemed so rushed and anxious during the presentation.” You explain that you just didn’t have enough time to prepare properly. He reminds you that several months ago you participated in Presentation Skills training and for sure you learnt tools from the training to help prepare and practice in advance. You hit your head with your hand and say “Ooh!” You remember now, you did have that template to put together a presentation and you should have practiced out loud with a colleague who had also taken the class. Unfortunately, because you hadn’t given a presentation since you took the class, you just went into a panic mode and forgot to use the tools you had. You vow that this won’t happen to you again, you realize you need to practice these skills to keep them alive.

Practice might not necessarily make you perfect, but it will certainly help you improve and be better prepared and perceived by your audience. You’ll notice that nervousness and anxiety will disappear as you feel more in control and familiar with your content.

NMC CORPORATE Importance of Practice (Contd..)

Four Stages of Competence Whenever we learn something new, we go through four distinct stages. In psychology, these are called the four stages of competence. Each stage describes a person’s knowledge and skill in terms of two dimensions: competence-incompetence and conscious-unconscious. The first stage is called Unconscious Incompetence. In this stage, an individual is not competent in a particular area and they are not aware of that incompetence at a conscious level. At this stage, you don’t know what you don’t know. The second stage, Conscious Incompetence, occurs when an individual’s incompetence comes into their consciousness. We enter this stage when we are first exposed to new information or a skill. The third stage, Conscious Competence, occurs when an individual has competence consciously. Beyond mere exposure, at this stage, we have gained a certain level of comfort with a body of knowledge or have developed a certain amount of skill. The fourth stage, Unconscious Competence, occurs when an individual has competence, but it is not available consciously. The competence is demonstrated without thinking about it consciously. One example is driving a car; while it may have taken conscious effort to learn how to drive, once it is mastered, it is something we do automatically. The four stages of competence is an interesting and useful model that can help us assess where we are in the learning process. One’s ultimate aim is to reach the Fourth Stage; i.e. Unconsciously Competent. This can be achieved only by practice. As rightly worded in a Latin proverb; “Practice is the Best Master.” As Toastmasters; once we become Unconsciously Competent, our speech delivery will become smooth and uninterrupted; Voice modulation, hand gestures, facial expressions, stage movement, etc. will be natural and balanced.

One thing that all good speakers have in common is practice. Practice is essential. Knowing your material well will reduce your nervousness and anxiety. The following methods are commonly used for the practice:

1. The Mirror You are your best audience. Practice eye contact and gestures in the mirror. Make your gestures larger than normal to help you loosen up.

2. Audio Recorder Tape your presentation then listen to it. Listen to your rate of speech, use of filler words, and volume. Learn your content by listening to yourself. Be your own teacher.

3. Videotape Not for the feint hearted. See if you can maintain eye contact with camera. Notice your gestures, the expression on your face. Tape yourself a couple of times and see how you can improve.

4. People Colleagues, friends, spouses and kids can all assist by being your audience.

Methods for Practice

NMC CORPORATE Purpose Of

Life

TM Sanjiv Singh

Do you want your life to be at the mercy of others, just like the blind person? If your answer is no, then you need to introspect and find your purpose of life. One day my wife and I were deciding about the dinner to be cooked. My 10 year old daughter was extremely annoyed at this just like an 8 month baby when prevented from putting his finger in the live electrical socket. She was annoyed because she disliked home cooked food from every corner of her heart. She retorted, “Dad, why do we have to eat, if we excrete the whole thing the next day?” I embraced her and said, “Darling, Oxygen, minerals and vitamins from the food we eat are absorbed by the blood which helps in growth and development of the body.” Just then, my mind knocked at me and cried EUREKA! I have found the answer to your most haunted question. It said now listen to me, between our entry to and exit from this world, we have to be like food, providing Oxygen, minerals and vitamins we have within us to this world to help in growth and development of the mankind. I understood that life is not about having the goods but life is about doing good to others. We can be dedicated doctors, enterprising engineers or bold businessmen and use our talent and ability to bring benefits to mankind. Abraham Lincoln enslaved millions of hearts by bringing an extinction to slavery, Martin Luther King Jr. captivated hearts of generations by liberating the blacks and Mother Teresa agitated the generations’ hearts by bringing solace to the uncared ones. They have become immortal, because their deeds will never decay for generations to come. Dear Toastmasters, let us cure our blindness towards the purpose of life and let us start living rather than merely existing. Give your life away for doing good to others because in that you will find the purpose of life.

Everything has a purpose. We all know the purpose of Toastmasters meetings, various role players in the meeting, club contests; don’t we? But the question which haunts me is “What’s the Purpose of my life”? Next to my house stays a blind person. Every morning he has to catch a bus from the other side of the street. One day he would be escorted by a rogue boy, who would intentionally guide him to a wrong destination, for fun. Another day a charming girl would hold his hand and take him to the perfect place. On other occasions he uses his stick to find the way, not sure whether he has actually reached the right spot. So, what do we learn from this story? Obviously, that the girls are better behaved than the boys and the stick cannot be relied upon. No! You don’t think so. Ok, the story tells us that a blind person is dependent on another person for guidance. If the person happens to be a gentleman or gentlewoman then you will be guided to a correct destination; and if not, you do not know where you will end up?

The Traveling Toastmaster

CC ALB Sunil Kottarathil Toastmasters is a continuous journey. A toastmaster keeps traveling. Even while physically resting at a place, his mind will be discovering new places of interest. Ever since I saw “The Traveling Toastmaster” page in Toastmasters magazine, I had already packed my magazine in my travel bag. As the summer holidays approached, my six year old daughter told me “Papa, Mukthika is going to Switzerland this time. She says it snow there. I want to see snow too.” I replied “Dear, if snow is what you want, snow is what you get.” That was how we reached Manali, the Switzerland of India. From Manali, we went past green deodar pine forests, lush apple orchards, clear hot water springs, gurgling waterfalls and Priety Zinta’s beautiful vacation home, to reach Rohtang Pass, which is at an altitude of 4112m, for our first tryst with snow. But what I was totally unprepared for was my reaction to snow. Whiter than the whitest of clouds in the sky, softer than the softest of cotton wool, inviting, titillating, enthralling lay an expanse of snow. The tranquility of the

whole scene bowled me over. The pristine white chocolate landscape of astounding beauty was stretched over Kilometres and Kilometres. I was transported to the most romantic of dream sequences from a Yash Raj Movie. Preity Zinta in a white saree in my arms and the frame could have been picture perfect. Well, if you discount my singing that is. We played with wildest abandon. We tried skiing, snowboarding, snow scooting, sledging, making snowmen, dropping snow balls down the neck of unsuspecting victims. Time seemed to stand still. What was that word I used to remember in the plains? Tension? There was none of it here. We came back to earth exhausted, famished and exhilarated. We celebrated our rendevouz with snow, with hot and spiced tandoori chicken fresh off the tandoor, sauce, parathas, pickles and hot chocolate to wash it all down. Perfect.

his lifetime. Chingu is a quilt that is made from the fur of an animal called Chingu. Its traders swear that it is designed to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. In Manali , merchants go crazy when a potential customer walks by. Anything goes- brute force, guilt, manipulation, cajoling. Stores hire people to drag you in and they’ll patiently follow you around all to day to wear you down. I still can’t understand how, but we actually ended up buying three of them. On the next day, we were on the road to Simla. Compared to the picturesque Manali, Simla seemed a rather poor cousin. Simla’s main street, Mall Road, a noisy scene of constant activity, fronted by the bus stand, several shopping markets, travel agents, and a line of hotels and restaurants. It's a great place to watch the world go by – locals in traditional caps, Tibetan women in immaculate rainbow-striped pinafores, Nepali porters, Buddhist monks, souvenir-hunting Indian tourists and a curious mix of Westerners. The next day we were on our way to Delhi which actually was our starting point before going to Manali. One of the more interesting buildings was the government building, which is on a hill near the Parliament. It has some of the most syncretic architecture you can see in India. The building was heavily guarded and for some reason you could only take picture of one side of the building, which, unfortunately, was the side with the sun behind it.

Next day was spent in making rounds of usual tourist places including a museum, temple, a Tibetan monastery and indulging in a lot of adventurous sports like river rafting and paragliding. Manali makes an ideal trekking base for short hikes and serious expeditions and countless agencies can help put a package together for you. ‘Chingu’ is a name that no visitor to Manali will ever forget in

We visited the Gandhi Smriti, where Gandhi used to stay in Delhi, and the place where he was assassinated. There's now a museum, a bookshop, and a small gallery where they sell prisoners' art work (which coincidentally, has the theme of Gandhi). We paid a visit to the Red Fort, which was the seat of Mughal government, and the minute we got out of the car we were set on by the bicycle rickshaw drivers, who wanted to take us to where we already were.

NMC CORPORATE The Traveling Toastmaster (Contd..)

The sun was starting to set, and we made one last try to see something historical – Humayun's tomb. Humayun was one of the Mughal sultans and he buried himself in grand style. The next day we were off to Agra. As the home of Taj Mahal, Agra is a must for the tourist. They have some of the most stringent security I've seen. My toastmaster magazine was confiscated too. The Taj Mahal is a beautiful piece of work, and it deserves all the praise it gets. I overheard a lot of tourists who said they were going to stay all day, and I'm not sure I really get it. For me two hours was enough. The people were a spectacle in themselves and a part of the Taj experience. I was really entertained to hear a hired guide giving a lot of information and some fanciful concoctions of his own to a group of foreigners. Our next and final stop was Itimad-ud-Daulah, a famous tomb, a building thought to be a precursor of the Taj Mahal. It is a beautiful building, and it was quiet, since everyone else in the whole world was running around at the Taj Mahal.

We were at the end of our trip. Ah! It was nice to be back home. Where else can you find cows roaming on the streets, but being treated with the same deference as old people. On the streets of Delhi, I smiled as a cow was standing in the middle of traffic and everyone going around it. Like any other city in India, the roads were crammed with cars, bicycles, rickshaws, auto-rickshaws, trucks of various sizes, camel carts or ox carts each going at its own speed and the amazing thing is that there aren’t more accidents than there are in the developed nations. If this doesn't sound like a restful vacation, it certainly wasn't. It was vibrant, interesting, stimulating, and above all, it was different – sounds very similar to a Toastmaster journey, I am sure you would agree.

Key To Treasure

TM Ramesh Taurani

not employ house maid for a month and the child was under tender love and care of the mother. To everyone’s surprise, after one month, the results were astonishing. Later they did have a maid, but it was made sure that the child will be looked after only by mother and the maid would be undertaking the household chores. In this instance, the girl’s personality was being adversely affected came to be noticed because the girl was very sensitive. In most cases it goes unnoticed because the problems are functioning at subtle levels and immediate manifestation is not there. Who knows how it is affecting the internal personality of a child? Now dear friends, I want to focus on the real issue. The issue is not that mothers should not take up jobs. On the contrary, I am in favor of mothers who are also employed. However, working mothers have multiple responsibilities; they have to discharge office duties and look after home as well. In order to excel in their responsibilities at both office and home, it is necessary that they give sufficient time to both these responsibilities. The issue is how we can help working mothers in achieving this? Let us consider that if daily office hours for working mothers are restricted to 5 hours, then mother’s arms will be waiting at home to welcome the child on his / her return from school. Mothers can then devote sufficient time for the upbringing of a child and with full energy. Now compare with those mothers who come home in the evening after full day of work, tired and exhausted. What quality of upbringing can they provide? This is the whole idea. Will not a child brought up with all the energy and enthusiasms make a better child? Will not a better child be an asset to the society, to the nation and to the entire mankind? Dear friends, let us join together to create an atmosphere where ladies get more time to take care of their little children. Key to treasure is in your hands

Key to treasure is in our hands. Where is that key? Can we make this world a place where everyone is only to help each other and is happy in others progress! Yes, we can. For this, main ingredient is input. Best quality of input ensures the best quality of output. Children are the real treasure of every parent and our society. From where can we get that best quality of input for the child? The first and foremost input is their upbringing. There is nothing in this world that can be compared with a mother’s love. It is said that God could not be everywhere and therefore He made mothers. If all children get upbringing from their mothers, will they not grow up as better persons? I am not against maids and servants; they are also human beings who put in hundred percent for the upbringing of the child. But the difference is that they cannot provide the motherly love that nature has gifted only to mothers. Here is an example of a couple having a very sweet 6 years old daughter. She was very quiet and normal at home but hyperactive at school. Parents got several complaints from the school about their daughter and this developed misunderstanding in parents’ mind about the teachers. Parents thought that teachers are unnecessarily bothering them. The matter became so serious that parents were called by the school, and a long meeting was held. After the meeting it was suggested that mother should take complete care of the child and not the house maid. Parents followed the advice of the school. They did not employ house maid for a month and the hild d d l d f h

Table Topic

Session

Conducted by CTM ALS Abraham Raju

During Meeting No. 191 0n 18th Sept. 2010

The Toastmasters Table Topic program provides the club members with an opportunity to gain experience and polish impromptu speaking. Each program should be stimulating, provocative and pleasurable. It can be achieved by using your ingenuity and imagination in developing new Table Topic concepts!

The table topics master attentively listened to the speaker and made short comment on each speech before introducing the next topic . This particular Table Topic Session conducted by TM Abraham Raju added value of the impromptu element by forcing the member to browse through the pages of his memory and thus improving his “better listening and thinking” skills.

During meeting #191 on 18th September 2010, TM Abraham Raju, who is known for his unique ways of conducting table topic sessions, handed out pictures corresponding to news appeared recently in GULF NEWS and asked the table topic speaker to identify the event. All the five speakers showed their ability to “speak on their feet”.

Table Topic Speaker TM Sanjiv Singh spoke on oil spill caused at Mumbai port due to collision of Oil container ship MSC Chitra with another vessel. The accident resulted in an oil slick causing environmental pollution as well as containers fell overboard and caused disruption of the port traffic.

Table Topic Speaker TM Ramesh Taurani spoke on UPS cargo plane crash at Dubai killing two of its crew members. He advised that it was fortunate that the casualities were minimum as this was only a cargo plane and stressed in the need to identify the improvements that can prevent such crashes in future.

Table Topic Speaker TM Sudha Datta spoke on family members paying homage to 9/11 victims at Ground Zero – the site where twin tower once stood before terrorist attack in 2001.

Table Topic Speaker TM Anto Bernard spoke about the plight of a man trying to save his most precious possessions, his children and wife during recent flood at Pakistan. The family was trying to disembark from the boat which was sinking due to overcrowding.

Table Topic Speaker TM Dr. Katrak spoke on the first anniversary of the Dubai Metro which has served about 30 million people in an year. The whole Metro System is run by only 10 people including three traffic operators. Metro has been able to provide comfort in commute to both local residents and visitors.
