NMAC Announces Building Leaders of Color “(BLOC)

NMAC’s Building Leaders of Color is seeking People of Color Living with HIV to join this unique training program. There will be three (3) program training and one application. Please note the deadlines for applications are as follows:

• Trans BLOC Application Deadline Sept. 21, 2018 • Regional BLOC - Application Deadline Oct. 1, 2018 • Youth BLOC ages 18-24 - Application Deadline Oct. 1, 2018 •

Q. Who is BLOC for? A. All people including persons of Trans Experience and Youth (18-24) of color living with HIV who wants to:

v Want support to become leader? v Make a difference? v End HIV-related stigma and advocate for better HIV services? v Serve as a new leader in your community?

Q. What is the purpose of BLOC A. The program goals are:

v to increase the number of People of Color Living with HIV who are prepared to engage in leadership roles and activities related to HIV service delivery.

Q. To be a BLOC participant what will I have to do? A. Successful applicants will be asked

v to identify opportunities to engage and participate meaningfully in decision making bodies and planning boards that service people living with HIV.

v to participate in monthly webinars, conference calls, v to attend two- three day in person training (beginning Oct. 2018 – Jan. 2019), and v actively engage in your local community to improve health outcomes for people living with

HIV. v Within 60 days of completion of the training, you will be expected to engage in the planning

process with a local community group serving persons living with HIV. These community groups might be a Ryan White Planning Council, Planning Council Committees, TGA’s Consortiums, Community or Consumer Advisory Board and their committees are all examples of the types of meetings we will be expecting you to participate.

Q. What else is expected of BLOC participants

A. All participants accepted into the program will be expected to engage fully in the entire program.

Review the following program expectations to ensure you can abide by all the considerations. v Each participant will be expected to fully participant for up to nine (9) months. v At the completion of the person training, attend and represent the project in local, state and

national meetings and events. v Be comfortable learning, networking and working with diverse groups of people of color and

others. v Be willing to do self-guided study and review of lesson plans and information before during

and after the trainings. v Participate in pre-training and post training evaluation, telecoms and webinars for the entire

program v Share highlights from the training and distribute using your social media networks. v Work with NMAC and Partners in coordination of follow up mentoring and coaching

support. Q. Is there anything else I need to know? A. Here are a few extra things you might need to know.

Applicants applying the Regional or Youth Programs you will need to email a letter of support to the program by Oct. 4 on company/agency letterhead to leadership_pipe@nmac.org

v NMAC will provide you with training materials to increase your ability to lead v You do not need special leadership experience (we will teach you) v NMAC will cover the cost of all lodging, travel, and meals for your participation in the

program. v All trainings will be held late Oct. 2018 thru Jan. 2019) v The BLOC is a program of NMAC’s Leadership Pipeline. v The BLOC is a unique opportunity offered to by funding through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS

Program, v Applications.

Why The BLOC Program?

It is important that Persons of Color bring their lived experience to address national and local health disparities yet too often, Communities of Color have been systematically excluded from community planning processes or misrepresented. Without the narrative of these communities we cannot hope to end this epidemic. Blacks/African-American communities continue to suffer with disproportionate rates of both HIV infections and AIDS diagnoses.

Purpose of BLOC Program

The purpose of BLOC program is to build the capacity of Persons of Color Living with HIV to serve in

leadership positions as it relates to the development, planning,

implementation, and evaluation of federally funded HIV-related services in the United States.

The BLOC program will contribute to the national HIV goals by ensuring

Persons of Color living with HIV, are equipped to provide meaningful input and guidance on achieving

these goals.

BLOC Target

BLOC is a program targets people of color living with HIV of all ages [e.g. Black, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN), and Asian Pacific Islander (API)], including a special emphasis on transgender women of color living with HIV.

BLOC ….

• BLOC will contribute to a decrease in health disparities by developing leaders of color living with HIV who are emboldened to fully participate in HIV planning bodies, and other leadership opportunities. • Their participation will inform, educate, and support

planning bodies and services providers to truly understand the needs of those who are most vulnerable. • BLOC graduates will develop solutions that are built on the

strengths and assets of these communities to create real solutions. • BLOC trainings will give voice to those communities that are

over represented in the number of new HIV cases, but under-represented in leadership opportunities.

Program Expectations

• All participants accepted into the program will be expected to engage fully in the entire program.

• All participants are expected to be available and willing to devote a minimum of 3-4 days for on-site trainings during select months, and a minimum of 2 days for other months following training.

• Within 60 days of completion of the three-day training, you will be expected to engage in the planning process with a local community group severing persons living with HIV.

• All participants are expected to complete the in-person training, attend and represent the project in local, state and national meetings and events.

• All participants are expected to be comfortable with disclosing status as a PLWH in close safe HIV spaces and meetings

• Be comfortable learning, networking and working with diverse groups of people of color and others.

• Be willing to do self-guided study and review of lesson plans and information before during and after the trainings.

• Each participant will engage at least one (1) regional training.• All participants are expected to participate in pre-training and post

training telecoms and webinars for up to seven-months.• All participants are expected to work with NMAC and Partners in

coordination of follow up mentoring and coaching support.• All participants are expected to meet program requirements and to

improve our services and offerings, you will be asked to participate in evaluation activities such as brief surveys and/or interviews about your experience in the program for up to twelve-months.

Post Training Expectations

• Within 30 days of completion of the three-day training, you will be expected to identify at least one planning process with a local community group severing persons living with HIV.

• Within 30 days of identifying a planning community group severing persons living with HIV. You are to begin the process to join or enter nomination

• Until joining or the nomination process is approved you will be required to attend the meeting as an community observer.

• All participants are expected have monthly meeting with an assigned program mentor/coach for up to seven-months of the training program

• All participants are expected to set and review goal statement plans with mentors

• All participants which successfully complete the seven – twelve month program will receive certificate of Leadership Training Certificate.

• All participants which successfully complete the seven – twelve month program may be eligible to participate in other NMAC training opportunities, conferences etc.…

NMAC Covers: • Travel via airplane, train or driving stipend within 200 mi. • Lodging (hotel)• Meals • Ground transportation only round trip to training site from

local airport or train stations. (reimbursed onsite)• For air travel 1 checked bag if applicable (reimbursed onsite)
