120-Make the Switch....Transforming Containers and Gardens for the Fall SeasonAre your pots and beds exhausted from the summer’s heat? Freshen up everything by adding late blooming perennials, grasses and tough annuals that will last through frosts. Find some great ideas here at Smith’s Acres for using ‘common’ fall plants in unique ways and plant up some containers. Bring your own pot (or whatever you want to plant in!) or pick out a gorgeous new one at the shop! Enjoy a relaxing evening choosing your own plants; if you’d like help, I’ll help you pick them out! Soil is provided and I will have a slide show of container and landscape ideas for inspiration. Instructor: Smith’s Acres Begins: Tuesday, 09/06; One night only Location: Smith’s Acres Time: 6:30-8:30 pm Cost: Resident $35 /Non-resident $40

121-Great Bulbs for ConnecticutIf you are looking for lots of early spring color, hundreds of flowers at prices that won’t break the bank, and absolute deer resistance, plant bulbs! There’s nothing like those first cheerful daffodils after a dreary gray late winter landscape! Crocus, hyacinth, tulips, allium, anemones - now’s the time to get them in for spring 2013. Daffodils (narcissus) are never eaten by deer or rodents...alliums are second best (occasionally I find a few nibbles on the bulb) and anemones are pretty foolproof too. Tulips are so beautiful, it’s worth trying a few techniques to save them from the critters to enjoy the display! I order fresh bulbs straight from the growers and offer many unusual varieties; first come, first served! Some are rare or in limited quantities. A slide show displays the available varieties with cultural information regarding height, bloom time and planting tips. Each attendee will receive 5 free bulbs! Instructor: Smith’s Acres Begins: Thursday, 10/18; One night only Location: Smith’s Acres Time: 6:30-8:30 pm Cost: Resident $35 /Non-resident $40

122- Conscientious LandscapingThis class is FOR LANDSCAPE CONTRACTORS/OWNERS AND EMPLOYEES ONLY. This first-time class is designed to help landscape company owners and employees understand their customers better. After working many years in the retail gardening environment and the past 5 doing garden design and maintenance, I felt there was a need to encourage landscape contractors who primarily perform general maintenance of lawns and gardens to become more ‘conscientious’ with their approach. For those interested in forming long lasting relationships with customers,

there is a lot behind the scenes, even before you make that first cut! The psychological factors as well as plant culture will be covered in this 2 part program. My hope is to encourage local businesses to become caretakers of their customers in all definitions of the word. 2 separate sessions-one for employees, one for owners. Supporting material provided. Instructor: Smith’s Acres1) Owners/Contractors-your responsibilities to customers and employees; training before scheduling, etc., gaining customer respect; learning about your trade2) Employees-how to interact with customers, pruning information, basic perennial care, weed ID, and conduct on customer property; advanced learning opportunities

Session 1: Begins: Tuesday, 10/23; One night only, Contractors /Owners’ Class Location: Waterford HS Time: 6:30-8:30 pm Cost: Resident $35 /Non-resident $40

Session 2: Begins: Tuesday, 10/30; One night only, Employees’ Class Location: Waterford HS Time: 6:30-8:30 pm Cost: Resident $35 /Non-resident $40

123-Wreaths for All SeasonsYear-round wreaths are beautiful ways to express the seasons! Lots of great ideas for holiday wreathes using unique decorations available here at the shop and things you may have around the house. Wreaths can be a nice housewarming gift at Thanksgiving – both the “permanent” type, as well as the mixed green fragrant holiday wreath with a custom bow. Make something different and exciting this year. You will make a mini all season wreath. Participants receive a coupon for an 8” natural greens wreath to use after November 22. Instructor: Smith’s Acres Begins: Tuesday, 11/06; One night only Location: Smith’s Acres Time: 6:30-8:30 pm Cost: Resident $40 /Non-resident $45

A withdrawal document with parental signature is needed for all 17 and 18 year olds. There is a $13 fee for all who are 21 years and older.

GED Testing AccommodationsAccommodations of the GED test are available for qualified individuals with a disability. For more information, please contact María Pukas or Karen O’Connell at (860)437-2385; or contact Mr. Ajit Gopalakrishnan, CT State Department of Education, at (860)807-2125.

About the GED ExaminationThe GED examination is a battery of five (5) comprehensive tests designed to measure, as directly as possible, the major generalizations, ideas, and intellectual skills that are the outcome of four years of formal high school study. The entire test battery takes 7 hours and 15 minutes to complete. A brief description of each of the sub-tests follows.

Language Arts - Writing: This test consists of two parts. Part I requires you to recognize or correct errors, revise sentences or passages, or shift constructions in the four areas of organization, sentence structure, usage, and mechanics (capitalization, punctuation, and spelling). The types of letters and memos you would normally write are likely to be included. Informational texts from business-related documents will be used.

In Part II you will have to write a well-developed essay on a topic familiar to most adults. You will be asked to have an audience and a purpose in mind for the essay. You will write in a real life context and adopt a role. You will be asked to generate (produce) ideas, express them clearly, organize the ideas, and connect them appropriately.

Social Studies: This test looks at history in terms of critical points in time and clusters (groups) of historical periods. Psychology, the science of behavior, is not a separate content area, but it is included in social studies areas. More emphasis is placed on U.S. and world history and civics and government.

Science: The science test is based on the National Science Education Standards (NSES). It emphasizes scientific understandings and places special emphasis on the environment and on health questions. Science education focuses on the activities or ways in which people use science in their daily lives.

Language Arts - Reading: This test asks you to read literary text and to show that you can comprehend, apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate concepts. In addition, the test asks you to read and comprehend nonfiction prose including informational texts (such as job benefits or letters to the editor typical in daily living), literary nonfiction, texts based on viewing components, and business documents.

Mathematics: The mathematics test consists mainly of word problems to be solved. Therefore, you must be able to combine your ability to perform computations with problem-solving skills. Fifty percent of the problems will require the use of a special calculator provided at the test site, and fifty percent of the questions will not permit the use of a calculator. Alternate formats are especially important on this test.

The calculator use is intended to eliminate the tediousness of making complex calculations in realistic, everyday settings.
