Thanksgiving with Julia Child

By Carol RobinsI had the privilege of working with Julia Child from 1997-1999 as an assistant/companion. On a trip to Paris, where Julia was doing publicity for a new book, something particularly amusing happened. It was Thanksgiving and on the plane Julia was saying that she couldn’t wait to get to her favorite cafe near our hotel for some moules frites (mussels and fries).

The publicist told us that there was a big surprise being planned for Julia. Upon leaving the airport we were driven to TGI Fridays. They had prepared, for the first time, a traditional

American Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings and they were extremely thrilled to present it to Julia. The look on her face was priceless. To say that she was stunned was an understatement.

We sat down at a table as they proudly served us dinner while cameras flashed. Julia dropped her napkin under the table and gave me “the look.” I looked under the table and she told me to follow her direction. She moved her under cooked food around her plate to make it appear that she had eaten some of everything. She then thanked them and told them that she was exhausted from her trip.

After being escorted to our rooms at the Ritz Hotel, Julia grabbed me and we ran down the hall to the service elevator; got to the basement and ran through the entire kitchen; and then ran down an alley to one of her favorite little cafés where she enjoyed her moules frites.
